Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. UWM (10-9, 5-1) The Panthers got back over.500 with a win over Cleveland State on Saturday at Goodman Arena. Freshman center Maria Viall scored a game-high 24 points to lead UWM, while senior forward Nicole Luchsinger added 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. With the win, the Panthers split the week's games on the road while stopping Cleveland State's four game winning streak. Both teams shot fairly even from the floor, with UWM making 25-of-64 and Cleveland State making 26-of-68. The Panthers built the advantage at the line, converting 31-of- 39 free throws while the Vikings made 16-of-23. Milwaukee also got up on the boards, outrebounding Cleveland Junior forward Stefanie Kaufmann finished with eight points and three assists in 12 minutes of action for UWM, while senior Teri Stoltenberg was the other Panther to figure in double-digits, adding 10 points. UW-GREEN BA Y (16-6, 8-1) The Phoenix bounced back after their first loss in conference play to defeat Detroit, 80-69, on Saturday in Detroit. Leading the way for the Phoenix was senior Melanie Tilque, who scored a career-high 20 points thanks in part to an 8-8 effort at the free throw line. Sophomore Sara Boyer also had a career high in the win for UW-Green Bay, scoring 14 points off the bench. Both teams battled back and forth in the first half, with the first 20 minutes featuring four ties and 11 lead changes. The Phoenix took a lead with 6:53 left in the first stanza on a layup by Natalie Yudt, and UW-Green Bay never relinquished the lead after that mark. After taking a lead at the break, the Phoenix built a 12-point advantage, 48-36, at the 16:13 mark on a three-pointer by Tilque. But the Titans fought back, and with the aid of a boisterous home crowd, Detroit closed the game to within two, 64-62, with 4:11 remaining in the contest. But free throws secured the win for the Phoenix as UW-Green Bay was over the final 3:47 of the game to seal the victory PANTHER SCHEDULE DATE OPPONENT TIME/RESULTS November 5 CLUB VOLNA (EXH) W at Illinois State L at Marquette L CHICAGO CHALL. The Phoenix are ranked nationally in three of those categories as well; Fifth in free throw percentage, eleventh in field goal percentage, and fourteenth in three-point percentage. UWM SERIES AGAINST UW-GREEN BAY The Panthers have not played a team more than they have the Phoenix. The two programs have faced off 45 times with Green Bay winning 33 times. In their meeting earlier in the year at Green Bay, the Phoenix were victorious In that game, the Panthers were led by Jessica Wilhite s career-high 32 points and school and MCC record 10 three-pointers. The rivalry between the two teams initially began when both teams were members of the NAIA on Feb. 15, UWM won that game in their first season and the Phoenix s second. INSIDE THE GAME AGAINST CLEVELAND STATE The first half rode like a roller coaster, as Cleveland opened scoring the first seven points followed by Milwaukee's dominating 14-0 run. The Vikings steadily came back and grabbed the lead on a pair of free throws with two minutes remaining. Junior Stefanie Kaufmann quickly answered for the Panthers, scoring on a turn-around jumper from sophomore Jessica Wilhite and sinking two free throws. The Vikings got the last say when Shannon Sword hit a three-pointer to tie it at 37 a piece heading into the locker room. The Panthers used a 9-2 run to open up the second half, but the Vikings followed with an 11-4 run of their own to trail, Cleveland briefly stole the lead after sinking a three-pointer on the next possession, but Milwaukee stayed close to take back the lead for good with nine minutes remaining after Maria Viall's layup and made free throw. UWM took control after Viall s three-point play, which gave the Panthers momentum and the lead at Milwaukee gradually pulled away from Cleveland, building on a 13-5 run over the next six minutes. Viall's layup with 2:12 left in game gave the Panthers a 12-point advantage at The Vikings stayed with it, but would get no closer than seven points down the stretch. Senior Nicole Luchsinger had a career night for the Panthers, recording 19 points and 14 rebounds. She posted her first career double-double, while grabbing a career and game-high on the boards. Her 19 points, on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and 11-of-12 from the line, also tied a career high. UWM COACH SANDY BOTHAM With Botham's guidance, the Panthers earned the second seed - their highest-ever - seed for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference post-season tournament. But Botham has been leading the Panthers to milestones since her first season at UWM ( ). She led her first team to a 16-win season, 12 more than the previous season the fifth-best turnaround in NCAA Division I that year. She won MCC Coach of the Year honors in that season. In the years since, Botham and her teams have collected several accomplishments. Botham s players have been named MCC Player of the Year and MCC Newcomer of the Year. In the last four seasons, the Panthers have seen 10 selections to the All-MCC teams and All-Newcomer teams. Attendance at UWM women's basketball games has increased more than fourfold since Botham has taken over at UWM. Last year, the Panthers home attendance average of 1,646 fans led the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and the 2,629 fans that filed into the Klotsche Center on Feb. 20, 1999 set a single-game attendance record. 4 CAREER DA Y Senior Nicole Luchsinger was a key instrument in helping UWM grab the MCC win on the road at Cleveland State. Luchsinger scored 19 points, tieing her career-high that she also posted this season on Dec. 30th against Missouri. She also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, which also gave her a new careerhigh on the boards. The senior co-captain s 19 points, 14 rebounds also gave her the first double-double of her career. Against Cleveland State, Luchsinger was 4-of-6 from the field, and 11-of-12 from the line. She also tallied two assists, one block, and one steal while hustling in 31 minutes of action. INJUR Y UPDA TE Starting center Liz Fletcher went down with a knee injury about four minutes into the game against Detroit. A player collided into Fletcher s right knee, hyperextending it. Team specialists took an MRI earlier this week, but the extend of the injury is yet unkown. Meanwhile, freshman Maria Viall moved into the starting slot in place of Fletcher. Against Cleveland State last Saturday, Viall recorded a game-high 24 points. She will get the nod to start on Saturday against Green Bay. HITTING THE BOOKS Sophomore guard Jessica Wilhite etched her name in the school records book against Detroit. Wilhite sank three tres to give her the UWM record in made three-pointers in a season. She now has 65 on the season, surpassing Daryl Schaffelds previous record of 64. Wilhite should distance herself further as the Panthers have five regular-season games remaining. WILHITE A GAINST GREEN BA Y Jessica Wilhite lit it up from downtown last time Milwaukee played Green Bay. With a 10-of-17 three-point shooting performance from behind the arc against the Phoenix, Wilhite set MCC and school records, along with a new season-high in the NCAA. She beat the previous MCC all-time record of nine, held by UWGB's Trisha Ebel set last year. Wilhite also broke the school record of seven, recorded by Andrea Filipek in last season's game against Green Bay. She set a new season high in the NCAA with her 10 tres, surpassing the previous high of nine by Rachael Gobble of Tennessee Tech and Michelle St. Clair of Cal-State Sscramento. The all-time NCAA record of three-pointers in a game is 12. Wilhite s 32 points became a career high. After Wilhite s eighth three-pointer of the evening she became the fourth Panther to record 100 career three-point field goals. She joins Tracey Freund, teammate Teri Stoltenberg, and assistant coach Jen Greger as the only Panther women to do so. With accomplishing the feat in 43 games, she set a school record for fewest games to do so. The previous record was 49 games by career three-point leader Daryl Schaffeld. Stoltenberg did it in 81 games, while Greger and Freund each accomplished the feat in 87. She was named MCC Player of the Week following after her game s performance. TERI START-ENBERG Senior guard Teri Stoltenberg will be starting her 91 st career game for the Panthers when they take on UW-Green Bay. Since her freshman year in 1997 when she started all 27 games, Teri has played in 98 of the team s 103 games and started 90, missing only five games and eight starts due to injury. While eight different Panthers have found themselves rotated into the starting line-up for Coach Botham, Stoltenberg is the only one to start in every game for UWM this season. MOVING UP THE CHARTS With a three-pointer in UWM s victory over Butler, Stoltenberg passed current Panther assistant coach Jen Greger for second on the school s career three-pointer list with 126. The school record is 224, held by Daryl Shaffeld who played from Stoltenberg currently has 128 for her career. With her assist to Holly Tamm on a first-half threepointer against Detroit on Jan. 13, Stoltenberg became the eighth Panther player in school history to amass 300 career assists. She currently has 51 on the season, giving her a total of 318 to move her into sixth place in the UWM career records in assists. HOME SWEET HOME Like the current trend in the MCC, UWM sports a winning record at home. The Panthers have gone 8-2 at the Klotsche Center. In the MCC five of the eight teams also own winning home records, including UW-Green Bay (9-1), Detroit (8-2), Loyola (8-3), and Cleveland State (7-3). The three teams yet to catch up on the latest trends in home dominance, Wright St., Butler, and UIC, don a combined record of and none of them have winning records on the road either. Just after the halfway point in the conference season, the home team has gone (.639) in conference play, and MCC teams (.620) overall at home. UW-Green Bay is the only MCC school that can lay claim to a.500 record on the road. The Phoenix split the first two games of their current road trip to move their record to 6-5 record. DEFENSE DEFENSE The Panthers fiesty defense has recorded 214 steals this season, averaging per game. Their opponents have tallied 163 steals against UWM, averaging 7.8 per game. They currently rank third in the conference in steals, as well as third in scoring defense by allowing opponents 65.4 ppg. The Panthers defense has also recorded less turnovers than their opponents, forcing other teams to turnover the ball 428 times, or an average of 20.4 per game, their turnover margin of is second in the MCC. RECORD-SET TING Besides a blockbuster win, the Panthers game against Central Michigan also set a few records around the nation, league, and at UWM. UWM s performance set MCC season-highs for assists (28) and three-point percentage (.786), beating the previous record of 25 and.571, respectively. Sophomore guard Jess Wilhite s 83 percent on 5-of-6 three-point shooting also set an individual best in the conference, blowing out the prior record of 63.6 percent. UWM also reset the school record in 3-point FG percentage, beating the old record of 66.7 percent. Most impressive, UWM set a NCAA Divison I single-game high for the season in 3-point FG pct with 78.6 percent. AT EASE Freshman Charlene Smith posted a career high in points (11) and minutes (19) played against Wright State earlier this season. Smith made 3-of-3 from the field and collected 5-of-8 from the line, while also recording two steals and four rebounds. In the Panthers previous game against Loyola, Smith recorded seven points in 18 minutes of action. The freshman is getting to be in the consistent rotaion for the Panthers, and is contributing well in her role.
