1 PANTHER BASKETBALL UWM WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES UWM (13-10) LOOKS TO STAY ATOP MCC AGAINST UIC (8-16) GAME TIME The UWM women s basketball team hosts UIC at the Klotsche Center on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. UWM (13-10, 9-2) The Panthers won their third straight game on Wednesday with an drubbing of Loyola at the Klotsche Center. The UWM women's basketball team used 16 steals and 29 Loyola turnovers to defeat the Ramblers The Panthers outshot the Ramblers 74-49, but shot only.392 compared to Loyola s.551, including.600 from beyond the arc. Four Panthers scored in double-digits including Jessica Wilhite s 17 points. Wilhite also grabbed seven rebounds, three steals and gave out three assists. Also scoring in double digits were Allison Klaas (16), Maria Viall (14), and Janelle Jonason (10). UIC (8-17, 5-7) The Flames were pummeled by UW-Green Bay on Thursday in Green Bay. The Phoenix jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game, holding the Flames scoreless for the first five minutes of play. Mandy Stowe, who made her first start since Feb. 3, came back with a bang tabbing six points during UWGB's opening run. UIC would bounce back and eventually cut the lead to on two free throws by Jaysie Chambers. But the Phoenix took a 19-point lead (39-20) into intermission as they went on a 23-7 run over the final 9:33 of the period. UIC tried to claw back, tallying the first points of the second half, but UW-Green Bay just pulled away, running out to a 31-point advantage, 59-28, with 11:14 to play. The Flames would get no closer than 26 points the rest of the way as the Phoenix would build a lead as large as 34 (77-43) with 1:18 left in the contest. Chambers paced UIC's efforts on Thursday as she finished the night with a teambest 12 points and eight rebounds. UW-Green Bay did a stellar job of shutting down UIC's dynamic offensive duo of Kimberly Henry and Melea Clark as they combined for a season-low 12 points. Clark finished with 10, on 4-for-16 shooting, to extend her double-digit scoring string to 20 games. Clark also leads UIC in assists (3.1 apg) and steals (2.25 spg). She is ranked second in the MCC in steals. UIC dominates on defense, giving up an MCC-leading 63.5 points per contest by allowing opponents to shoot an MCC-low.398 from the field. On the other hand the Flames are scoring an MCClow 58.1 points a game. After losing last year s contest at UWM, UIC proceeded to win eight of their last 10 games of the season to finish 8-6 in conference play. UWM SERIES AGAINST UIC The Panthers won the last meeting with the Flames, 54-51, in Chicago on Jan. 25. UWM was led by Maria Viall s 15 points and shot from the line. Overall, the Panthers lead the series 11-7 and have won seven of the last eight meetings. The last time UIC won at Milwaukee was Jan. 14, 1995 (66-52). INSIDE THE GAME AGAINST LOYOLA The UWM women's basketball team built an 18-point first half lead, then held off two small Loyola rallies to claim an victory Wednesday night at the Klotsche Center. Jessica Wilhite scored 17 points to lead four Panthers in double figures. UWM forced 29 turnovers, and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds. Loyola trimmed an 18-point UWM advantage down to seven early in the second half, pulling within But the Panthers responded with a 19-5 burst, pulling ahead Loyola could get no closer than nine the rest of the way. UWM took control of the game with a stellar first-half defensive performance, as the Panthers forced 20 Loyola turnovers in claiming a advantage. The Ramblers closed to within at halftime before their second-half run. Allison Klaas added 16 points off the bench for the Panthers, while Maria Viall pitched-in with 14 points and Janelle Jonason scored 10. UWM COACH SANDY BOTHAM With Botham's guidance, the Panthers earned the second seed - their highest-ever - seed for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference post-season tournament. But Botham has been leading the Panthers to milestones since her first season at UWM ( ). She led her first team to a 16-win season, 12 more than the previous season the fifth-best turnaround in NCAA Division I that year. She won MCC Coach of the Year honors in that season. In the years since, Botham and her teams have collected several accomplishments. Botham s players have been named MCC Player of the Year and MCC Newcomer of the Year. In the last four seasons, the Panthers have seen 10 selections to the All-MCC teams and All-Newcomer teams. Attendance at UWM women's basketball games has increased more than fourfold since Botham has taken over at UWM. Last year, the Panthers home attendance average of 1,646 fans led the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and the 2,629 fans that filed into the Klotsche Center on Feb. 20, 1999 set a single-game attendance record. 4 HOME SWEET HOME UWM is riding a 13-game MCC winning streak at home, dating back to last season. Milwaukee was a perfect 7-0 in conference games played at the Klotsche Center last year, and currently boasts a 6-0 record at home against the MCC this year. UWM s overall record at home is 10-2, with tough losses coming against Missouri and Wisconsin. DEFENSE DEFENSE The Panthers fiesty defense has recorded 244 steals this season, averaging per game. Their opponents have tallied only173 steals against UWM, averaging 7.52 per game. They currently rank second in the conference in steals, as well as third in scoring defense by allowing opponents 65.5 ppg. The Panthers defense has also recorded less turnovers than their opponents, forcing other teams to turnover the ball 476 times, or an average of per game. Their turnover margin of leads the MCC. COMFORT IN THE MCC Junior guard Holly Tamm had a breakout game against Detroit on January 13, recording 23 points off the bench to lead the Panthers comeback. Her all-around performance still remains a season high for her. In Saturday s match against Green Bay, Tamm recorded a career-high six steals while adding eight points, five assists, and four rebounds. The transfer from UIC, before sitting out last season with UWM, led the Flames in scoring (15 ppg), rebounding (5 rpg), and steals (47) in She was ranked second on the team with 73 assists and 22 three-pointers, and garnered MCC First-Team All-Conference honors as a sophomore. She currently averages 7.5 ppg in the conference, and 6.2 ppg overall. CAREER DA Y Senior Nicole Luchsinger was a key instrument in helping UWM grab the MCC win on the road at Cleveland State. Luchsinger scored 19 points, tying her career-high that she also posted this season on Dec. 30th against Missouri. She also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, which also gave her a new careerhigh on the boards. The senior co-captain s 19 points and 14 rebounds also gave her the first double-double of her career. Against Cleveland State, Luchsinger was 4-of-6 from the field, and 11-of-12 from the line. She also tallied two assists, one block, and one steal while hustling in 31 minutes of action. HEY, AREN T YOU... Sophomore forward Angela Wenzel may look a little familiar to UIC players because she transfered with junior Holly Tamm after the season. Some might also know her as the school s all-time field goal percentage leader. Wenzel holds two school records from her year at UIC, field goal percentage in a season and field goal percentage for a career. In she shot 96-for-175 from the field to finish the season and her career at UIC with a.549 field goal percentage. Tamm is also in the record books. In her two years at UIC, Tamm shot.347 from beyond the arc and.739 on free throws which are both ranked seventh in school history. HITTING THE BOOKS Sophomore guard Jessica Wilhite etched her name in the school records book against Detroit. Wilhite sank three tres to give her the UWM record in made three-pointers in a season. She now has 70 on the season, surpassing Daryl Schaffelds previous record of 64. Wilhite should distance herself further as the Panthers have three regular-season games remaining. WILHITE A GAINST GREEN BA Y Jessica Wilhite lit it up from downtown on January 20 against Green Bay. With a 10-of-17 three-point shooting performance from behind the arc against the Phoenix, Wilhite set MCC and school records, along with a new season-high in the NCAA. She beat the previous MCC all-time record of nine, held by UWGB's Trisha Ebel set last year. Wilhite also broke the school record of seven, recorded by Andrea Filipek in last season's game against Green Bay. She set a new season high in the NCAA with her 10 tres, surpassing the previous high of nine by Rachael Gobble of Tennessee Tech and Michelle St. Clair of Cal-State Sscramento. The all-time NCAA record of three-pointers in a game is 12. Wilhite s 32 points became a career high. After Wilhite s eighth three-pointer of the evening she became the fourth Panther to record 100 career three-point field goals. She joins Tracey Freund, teammate Teri Stoltenberg, and assistant coach Jen Greger as the only Panther women to do so. By accomplishing the feat in 43 games, she set a school record for fewest games to do so. The previous record was 49 games by career three-point leader Daryl Schaffeld. Stoltenberg did it in 81 games, while Greger and Freund each accomplished the feat in 87. She was named MCC Player of the Week following her game s performance. TERI START-ENBERG Senior guard Teri Stoltenberg will be starting her 93rd career game for the Panthers when they take on UIC. Since her freshman year in 1997 when she started all 27 games, Teri has played in 100 of the team s 105 games and started 92, missing only five games and eight starts due to injury. While eight different Panthers have found themselves rotated into the starting line-up for Coach Botham, Stoltenberg is the only one to start in every game for UWM this season. MOVING UP THE CHARTS With a three-pointer in UWM s victory over Butler, Stoltenberg passed current Panther assistant coach Jen Greger for second on the school s career three-pointer list with 126. The school record is 224, held by Daryl Shaffeld who played from Stoltenberg currently has 131 for her career. With her assist to Holly Tamm on a first-half threepointer against Detroit on Jan. 13, Stoltenberg became the eighth Panther player in school history to amass 300 career assists. She currently has 56 on the season, giving her a total of 323 to move her into sixth place in the UWM career records in assists. FAN APPRECIA TION UWM s game against UW-Green Bay last Saturday at the Klotsche Center set a single-game attendance record for the women s team at home. 2,796 fans filed in to watch the exciting conference showdown, beating the previous attendance record of 2,629 set on Feb. 20, 1999 against UWGB. The Panthers annual Krowd the Klotsche promotion played an important role in the record-setting attendence. Along with being one of the most publicized games of the season, tickets were also available at North Shore Bank branch locations.
