1 PANTHER BASKETBALL UWM WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES UWM (7-9) TRIES TO CONTINUE CHICAGO DOMINANCE AGAINST LOYOLA (8-10) GAME TIME UWM women s basketball jump the border for the second time in three days to take-on MCC-foe Loyola on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. UWM (7-9, 3-1) The Panthers nabbed their first road win of the season with a win against UIC in Chicago on Thursday. reshman center Maria Viall ignited UWM with 13 points in the second half to defeat UIC, 55-51, Thursday night at the UIC Pavilion. Viall finished with a game-high 15 points to lead the Panthers over the lames (5-13, 2-3). The Panthers finished shooting 38 percent from the field, and were only 1-of-8 from the arc. UWM's 18-of-24 free throws made the difference in the game when compared to UIC making only 5-of-9, with all only coming in the second half. UIC finished with 32 percent from the field and 6-of-20 from the three-point land. The lames ended with the advantage on the boards and tallied a assist-turn over ratio. The Panthers's ratio ended 15-17, respectively. LOYOLA (CHICA GO) (8-10, 2-3) The Ramblers were squelched in their last outing with UW-Green Bay, in Chicago on Thursday. UW-Green Bay used hot shooting to jump out to an early lead and never looked back as they downed Loyola, 84-50, in a Midwestern Collegiate Conference game Thursday night at the Gentile Center. Torrid first half shooting from the visitors ignited a decisive 15-2 run that turned a 10-6 lead into a 25-8 bulge eight minutes into the game. The Ramblers managed to stem the tide but had difficulty slicing into the lead. A 9-0 Phoenix run to end the half gave UWGB a advantage at the intermission. Loyola was able to find open shots, however, the Ramblers had problems converting, shooting only 21 percent (6-for-29) from the floor in the opening stanza. By contrast, UW-Green Bay was on fire, shooting 71 percent (17-for-24) for the half. Junior Lauren Sirus led Loyola with 10 points. Lauren Yops and Jenetria Harden added seven points apiece. Mandy Stowe and Chandra Johnson scored 14 points each for the Phoenix PANTHER SCHEDULE DATE OPPONENT TIME/RESULTS November 5 CLUB VOLNA (EXH) W at Illinois State L at Marquette L CHICAGO CHALL. UWM SERIES AGAINST LOYOLA The Panthers hold a 11-7 series advantage over the Ramblers. UWM swept the season series against Loyola last year, as well as the season. The Panthers have won seven of the last eight meetings beteween these two teams. In their last meeting, UWM won by a score of on ebruary 24, our Panthers put up double-digits including Jessica Wilhite who went for 18. The Panthers also shot.667 (8-12) from three-point range. INSIDE THE GAME AGAINST UIC After a slow beginning, the Panthers broke open the first half with a 5-0 lead. Junior guard Holly Tamm, a transfer from UIC, scored on a lay-up at the 16:50 mark, followed by a three-point play from Wilhite. The lames answered with a 6-0 run, and switched leads with the Panthers for the rest of the half. UWM trailed, 23-22, at halftime while shooting 31 percent from the field. The Panthers were 0-of-6 from three-point range in the first half while grabbing the advantage on the boards. UIC shot 24 percent, and were 5-of-16 from downtown. After trailing by one point at halftime, the Panthers stole the game for good on a lay-up by Viall to take the edge with 5:24 to go on the clock. They scored the next seven points, but the lames steadily rallied back to narrow the gap and keep the game close throughout. UWM had to fight off UIC with under a minute remaining as the lames kept the game within two points down the stretch. Sophomore guard Jessica Wilhite put in a fast lay up off of an outlet pass to take the lead with 34 seconds left. UIC answered back with a jumper off the glass, but junior Allison Klaas' two free-throws opened the lead back up to four points. UIC hit another jumper with seconds remaining and were forced to foul senior guard Teri Stoltenberg. Stoltenberg sank both her free throws to end the game. UWM COACH SANDY BOTHAM With Botham's guidance, the Panthers earned the second seed - their highest-ever - seed for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference post-season tournament. But Botham has been leading the Panthers to milestones since her first season at UWM ( ). She led her first team to a 16-win season, 12 more than the previous season the fifth-best turnaround in NCAA Division I that year. She won MCC Coach of the Year honors in that season. In the years since, Botham and her teams have collected several accomplishments. Botham s players have been named MCC Player of the Year and MCC Newcomer of the Year. In the last four seasons, the Panthers have seen 10 selections to the All-MCC teams and All-Newcomer teams. Attendance at UWM women's basketball games has increased more than fourfold since Botham has taken over at UWM. Last year, the Panthers home attendance average of 1,646 fans led the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and the 2,629 fans that filed into the Klotsche Center on eb. 20, 1999 set a single-game attendance record. Loyola Loyola Loyola 8.33 HOT SHOOTING With a 10-of-17 three-point shooting performance from behind the arc against UW-Green Bay, sophomore guard Jessica Wilhite set MCC and school records, along with a new season-high in the NCAA. She beat the previous MCC all-time record of nine, held by UWGB's Trisha Ebel set last year. Wilhite also broke the school record of seven, recorded by Andrea ilipek in last season's game against Green Bay. She set a new season record in the NCAA with her 10 tres, surpassing the previous held nine by Rachael Gobble of Tennessee Tech and Michelle St. Clair of Cal-State Sscramento. The all-time NCAA record of three-pointers in a game is 12. Wilhite s 32 points became a career high. After Wilhite s eighth three-pointer of the evening she became the fourth Panther to record 100 career three-point field goals. She joins Tracey reund, teammate Teri Stoltenberg, and assistant coach Jen Greger as the only Panther women to do so. With accomplishing the feat in 43 games, she set a school record for fewest games to do so. The previous record was 49 games by career three-point leader Daryl Schaffeld. The sophomore guard is currently ranked in the nation in 3-point Gs made per game, with an average of 3.38/game. PLAYER O THE WEEK After her unbelievable performance against Green Bay, Jessica Wilhite was named this week s MCC Player of the Week. LOYOLA S RECORD Overall Conference HOME ROAD NEUTRAL TERI START-ENBERG Senior guard Teri Stoltenberg will be starting her 86 th career game for the Panthers when they take on Loyola. Since her freshman year in 1997 when she started all 27 games, Teri has played in 93 of the team s 98 games and started 85, missing only five games and eight starts due to injury. While eight different Panthers have found themselves rotated into the starting line-up for Coach Botham, Stoltenberg is the only one to start in every game for UWM this season. MOVING UP THE CHARTS With her assist to Holly Tamm on a first-half three-pointer against Detroit, Stoltenberg became the eight Panther player in school history to amass 300 career assists. With two three-pointers of her own against Wisconsin, Stoltenberg tied and surpassed Tracey reund (121) for third place on the schools career three-point field goals list. After the game with UIC her career total rests at 123. Current Panther assistant coach Jen Greger is second on the list with 125. HOME SWEET HOME Like the current trend in the MCC, UWM sports a winning record at home. The Panthers have gone 6-2 at the Klotsche Center. In the MCC five of the eight teams also own winning home records, including UW-Green Bay (7-1), Detroit (7-1), Loyola (8-2), and Cleveland State (5-2). The three teams yet to catch up on the latest trends in home dominance, Wright St., Butler, and UIC, don a combined record of and none of them have winning records on the road either. After the second week in the conference season, the home team has gone 12-6 (.667) in conference play, and MCC teams (.745) overall at home. UW-Green Bay is the only MCC school that can lay claim to a.500 record on the road. The Phoenix won their fourth road game of the season, Thursday, to even their record at 4-4. DEENSE DEENSE The Panthers fiesty defense has recorded 161 steals this season, averaging 10.1 per game. Their opponents have tallied 127 steals against UWM, averaging 7.9 per game. They currently rank fourth in the conference in steals, as well as third in scoring defense by allowing opponents 64.9 ppg. The Panthers defense has also recorded less turnovers than their opponents, forcing other teams to turnover the ball 316 times, or an average of 18.2 per game. RECORD-SET TING Besides a blockbuster win, the Panthers game against Central Michigan also set a few records around the nation, league, and at UWM. UWM s performance set MCC season-highs for assists (28) and three-point percentage (.786), beating the previous record of 25 and.571, respectively. Sophomore guard Jess Wilhite s 83 percent on 5-of-6 three-point shooting also set an individual best in the conference, blowing out the prior record of 63.6 percent. UWM also reset the school record in 3-point G percentage, beating the old record of 66.7 percent. Most impressive, UWM set a NCAA Divison I single-game high for the season in 3-point G pct with 78.6 percent.
5 MILWAUKEE VS. CHICA GO This will be the Panthers third match up with a windy city team so far this season. Thus far UWM has gone 2-0, with two games with Loyola and one more with UIC remaining. The Panthers gained their second win of the season with a beating of Chicago State on December 5 th in Milwaukee, and recently won their first road contest of the season against Illinois-Chicago on Thursday. Teams from Illinois, in general, have fared none too well with Northern Illinois also losing in Milwaukee, Illinois lone win came in the first game of the season with a triump by Illinois State. ILLINOIS-GROWN Seven of the 13 players on UWM s roster share ties with the state of Illinois. Three players have transfered from Illinois-schools; Holly Tamm (UIC), Angela Wenzel (UIC), and Allison Klaas (College of DuPage, C.C.). ive players hail from there as well; Center Liz letcher (Wilmette), forward Stefanie Kaufmann (Ottawa), and guards Klaas (Wheaton), Jessica Wilhite (Glen Ellyn), and Charlene Smith (Bellwood). Smith inparticular has shown her stuff against her home crowd. In UWM s game with UIC, Smith played in a career-high 18 minutes and posted more career highs in three other categories. Her seven points, three steals, and two assists all beat her previous highs of three, one, and two, respectively. UWM S RECORD WHEN... HIGH SCORER IS...
