About the Seawolves Looking to improve to 3-2 for the first time since , the Stony Brook women s basketball team hosts the Monmouth Hawks on Tuesday in the first of three home games this week. Stony Brook enters the game off an victory over Nicholls State at Pritchard Gymnasium on Wednesday. Quick Shots Making her first start of the season, sophomore Sam Landers scored a career-best 16 points against Nicholls State on Wednesday... the Seawolves shot 43.9 percent from the field, the third time this season that Stony Brook has shot over 40 percent... Stony Brook is 2-2 for the first time since the Seawolves lead the America East and ranks 45th in the country in scoring offense (75.8 points per game)... SBU also leads the conference and ranks 20th in the nation in free throw percentage (.782)... 3 Head Coach Michele Cherry Named head coach on June 6, 2007, Michele Cherry enters her fourth season at the helm of Stony Brook University s women s basketball program in Cherry has been a part of the coaching staff since 2004 and brings a unique blend of professional and collegiate coaching experience to the Seawolves. Since taking over the head coaching duties, Cherry s players have succeeded in the classroom and on the court, having earned six America East All-Conference honors. Last season, Cherry guided Stony Brook to a fourth place in the America East standings, its best finish since The Seawolves also advanced to the America East semifinals for the first time since Junior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y), a 2010 All-America East second team selection, became the 14th player in program history to record 1,000 career points and was also just the sixth player to have at least 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds. Leading a team without a senior in , Cherry s team battled against top-tier quality opponents Michigan State, Penn State and St. John s. A season that saw the Seawolves put together a three-game conference winning streak, Cherry coached forward Kirsten Jeter to an America East All-Conference selection while guard Jodie Plikus earned All-Academic honors. In her first season, Cherry guided the Seawolves to an 8-23 record including wins in two of the last three games. In the final regular season game of the season, Stony Brook beat New Hampshire, in the largest margin of victory in its nineyear Division I history. The Seawolves would follow the win over the Wildcats with an upset-victory over No. 8 Maine in the first round of the America East Tournament. Cherry coached two Seawolves to America East honors in Dana Ferraro earned third team all-conference as well as all-defensive honors and Kirsten Jeter was an all-rookie selection. Cherry took over as head coach of the women s basketball program in 2007 after three seasons as lead assistant under head coach and mentor, Maura McHugh. During the previous two years, Cherry helped guide Stony Brook to unprecedented success at the Division I level. In the season, she helped lead Stony Brook to an record including a program best 14-2 conference record.10 Scouting Monmouth Monmouth has won three of its last four games after dropping its opener at Maryland. The Hawks won home games over Longwood and Lafayette last week. The Hawks are led by sophomore guard Alysha Womack, who is averaging a team-high 13.8 points per game. Womack was named the NEC Rookie of the Year as a freshman and was named to the preseason All-NEC team. Monmouth returns all but 18 points of its scoring from a season ago when six of its top seven scorers were freshman. The Hawks were picked to finish fifth in the NEC Preseason poll. The Hawks have been led by their defense this season, allowing just 58.6 points per game. They have led their last four opponents to 60 points or fewer. Last Time Out Stony Brook University s women s basketball team rallied from an eight-point second half deficit for an victory over the Nicholls State Colonels at Pritchard Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) led the Seawolves with a career-high 16 points including four free throws in the final 12 seconds. Landers went 6-for-6 from the line and dished out five assists.
