The Seawolves are coming off a victory over the NJIT Highlanders at Pritchard Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Bryan Dougher scored a career-high 25 points for the Seawolves, who held NJIT to 32.7 percent shooting. Stony Brook improved to 4-1 with the victory, matching its best start since Quick Shots The Seawolves are in the midst of a stretch in which they will play three games in five days and four games over the next week... a victory over Lehigh would give the Seawolves their best start since it would also match the program s best start to a season since when SBU started the season in addition to scoring a career-high 25 points against NJIT, Dougher also tied his career-bests with fi ve three-pointers and eight rebounds... Dougher s previous career-high came last season when he scored 24 against NJIT... sophomore Dallis Joyner tied a career-high with nine rebounds against the Highlanders on Saturday... sophomore Tommy Brenton also grabbed nine rebounds in addition to setting a career-high with fi ve steals... sophomore Danny Carter and freshman Marcus Rouse each made their fi rst career start on Saturday against NJIT... Rouse dished out three assists in a season-high 27 minutes... he scored a season-high 16 points on Tuesday at Rhode Island... Rouse hit his fi rst six shots and knocked down four three-pointers senior Muhammad El-Amin scored nine points on Tuesday against Rhode Island, snapping a streak of 23 straight games dating back to last season that he had scored in double-fi gures... El-Amin passed 500 points for his Stony Brook career last Saturday at Wagner... the Seawolves shot 40.4 percent on Saturday and have now shot over 40 percent in every game this season... Stony Brook has not allowed an opposing player to score more than 16 points this season... the Seawolves have also held three of their fi ve opponents under 40 percent shooting... SBU out-rebounded NJIT Stony Brook has won the battle of the boards in every game this season... After dropping its fi rst two games of the season, Lehigh has won three in a row including home victories over Quinnipiac and Monmouth. Freshman CJ McCollum is averaging a team-high 16.4 points per game and has led the Mountain Hawks in scoring in all three of their wins. vs. Lehigh Lehigh leads the all-time series, 4-2, and is 3-0 against the Seawolves in Bethlehem. SBU defeated the Mountain Hawks, 71-50, last season at Pritchard Gymnasium. Junior Chris Martin scored a game-high 19 points while senior Desmond Adedeji added 11 points and rebounds for the Seawolves, who closed the game on a run. SBU dropped a decision to the Mountain Hawks in its last visit to Bethlehem during the season despite a game-high 21 points from senior, and current Director of Basketball Operations, Ricky Lucas. Coaching Matchup Steve Pikiell (Connecticut 90) is in his fi fth year as a head coach, all at Stony Brook. Brett Reed (Eckerd 95) is in his third season as a head coach; all at Lehigh. Seawolves Receive Votes In CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll Stony Brook s hot start has gotten attention nationally as the Seawolves were in the others receiving votes portion of CollegeInsider.com s Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Seawolves received six votes in the latest edition of the poll released on Nov. 23. Road Warriors After winning just two games on the road in , the Seawolves won a program record nine games away from home last season, including victories over Air Force and defending conference champion UMBC. The Seawolves allowed just 52.4 points per game and 38.2 percent shooting in their nine road victories last season. El-Amin and Dougher were also important parts of the success, averaging 18.9 and 15.6 points per game, respectively, in those games. This season has been no different. In its two road wins, Stony Brook has held its opponents to a combined 32.4 shooting while Dougher and El-Amin have combined to score 29.5 points per contest. Last Time Out Sophomore Bryan Dougher scored a career-high 25 points and tied his career-best with fi ve three-pointers as he led the Stony Brook University men s basketball team to a victory over the NJIT Highlanders on Saturday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. The America East Player of the Game, Dougher shot 7-for-13 from the fi eld and went 5-for-8 from three-point land in addition to tying his careerhigh with eight rebounds. Dougher s previous career-best in points came last season when he scored 24 at NJIT. Sophomore Dallis Joyner added fi ve points and tied a career-high with nine rebounds while sophomore Tommy Brenton grabbed nine boards in addition to recording a career-high fi ve steals. The Seawolves held NJIT to 32.7 percent (16-for-49) shooting and forced the Highlanders into 18 turnovers. Stony Brook led by three with just under six minutes remaining in the fi rst half but Dougher nailed his third three of the half to push the Seawolves lead back to six. NJIT would cut the SBU lead to one on a Drejon Scott three with two minutes left but Joyner dunked home a Dougher miss, following a Stony Brook timeout, to put the Seawolves on top The teams traded baskets over the fi nal minute of the half as SBU took a lead into the break. Brenton got free for a dunk for the fi rst basket of the second half and Dougher followed with two free throws to give the Seawolves their largest lead of the game to that point at NJIT would cut the SBU lead back to four on an Isaiah Wilkerson three but senior Desmond Adedeji then completed a three-point play and followed with a put-back hoop to kick start a 9-3 spurt that put SBU up with just under 14 minutes remaining in the 2

3 game. SBU pushed its lead to 12 less than minute later on a driving lay-up from senior Eddie Castellanos. NJIT would slice the lead to eight, midway through the period but Castellanos then set-up Dougher for a three from the left corner to push the Stony Brook lead back to 11. Stony Brook still led by nine with six minutes left but Dougher drilled his fi fth and fi nal three of the game to make it and freshman Preye Preboye and Castellanos each followed with baskets to give the Seawolves their largest lead of the contest to that point at with 4:38 remaining. NJIT would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way as the Seawolves defeated the Highlanders for the fourth straight time. Seawolves Picked Fourth In Preseason Poll Stony Brook was picked fourth in America East preseason coaches poll. It was the highest ever preseason ranking for the Seawolves. Senior Muhammad El-Amin was also selected to the six-player preseason all-conference team, just the second player to earn that honor since the program joined the America East in Seawolves Announce Signing of Dave Coley and Al Rapier Head coach Steve Pikiell announced on Nov. 19 that guard Dave Coley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and forward Al Rapier (Chicago, Ill.) have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Seawolves beginning in the fall of A 6-2 combo guard, Coley is a three-year starter for head coach Lawrence Pollard at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. Coley was recently rated among the top 10 players in New York City by Rivals.com. Last season, Rapier played for powerhouse Mineral Area College and head coach Corey Tate, who has had 28 players earn scholarships to fouryear institutions over the past fi ve years. Rapier helped Mineral Area, located in Park Hills, Mo., to a record and the Region XVI Championship game. Rapier was an all-state and all-conference selection as a senior at Perspectives Charter Academy in Chicago, averaging 18 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists per game. The versatile 6-7 swingman was also selected as the #1 player in the Blue West Conference by the Chicago Tribune in addition to being ranked as the #17 forward in the area in MidState- Hoops.com s fi nal 2008 rankings Seawolves Accomplishments Steve Pikiell led the Stony Brook men's basketball team to its best season in its 10-year Division I history in Below are the Seawolves accomplishments from last season. - Won 16 games, their most since joining the America East in Defeated 15 Division I opponents, their most since joining Division I in Won eight America East games, a program record. - Set a Division I program record for road victories with nine. - Finished the regular season in a tie for fourth place in the America East, its best ever fi nish. - Had a winning season for the second time since Four players named to All-America East teams is a program record. - Junior Muhammad El-Amin named to All- America East second team; fi rst Seawolves player named to second team since D.J. 5 HEAD COACH STEVE PIKIELL Steve Pikiell is in his fi fth year at the helm of the Seawolves basketball program after being named the 10th coach in Stony Brook men s basketball history on April 13, Charged with building a program that made the jump from Division III to Division I in 1999, Pikiell guided the Seawolves to their best season in Division I history in The Seawolves fi nished overall and 8-8 in the America East Conference last season, tying for fourth-place in the fi nal regular season conference standings, the Seawolves best-ever America East Conference fi nish. The 16 overall wins and eight conference victories were the most for Stony Brook in its eight years as a member of the America East Conference. The 15 wins over the Division I opponents are the most since Stony Brook joined the Division I ranks in Stony Brook s improvement garnered national attention as Pikiell was named America East Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com. After winning just two games on the road a year ago, the Seawolves won a program record nine games away from home this season, including victories over Air Force and defending conference champion UMBC. The Seawolves also had great success in their fi rst season at newly renovated Pritchard Gymnasium, which included a program record four sold out crowds, defeating Albany, UMBC and Boston University. Stony Brook also set a program record with four players earning spots on All-America East teams. Junior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) was named to the All-America East second team, the fi rst Seawolves player named as high as the second team in fi ve years. Stony Brook, which started three freshmen and had four in its normal rotation; had two fi rst-year players honored by the America East Conference. Freshmen Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) and Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) were both named to the America East All-Rookie team, the fi rst time in program history that two players have been named All-Rookie. Brenton, Dougher and freshman Danny Carter (London England) also combined to win the America East Rookie of the Week award seven times, the fi rst time in program history that three different players have won the honor in the same season. Before arriving at Stony Brook, Pikiell helped orchestrate the rebirth of the George Washington basketball program under head coach Karl Hobbs. In , the Colonials recorded 22 wins, the most since the season and the second most in 50 years, en route to their fi rst-ever Atlantic-10 title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 14 conference victories were the most in GW s Atlantic-10 Conference history, signaling a complete turnaround for a team that fi nished last in the Atlantic-10 in A 1990 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Pikiell was a point guard, two-year captain and four-year letterwinner for the Huskies from UConn won its fi rst Big East title and advanced to the Elite Eight and Sweet 16 during the two years that Pikiell captained the Huskies. He played in 106 career games and averaged 8.2 points a game as a freshman. In 1991, Pikiell was given the UConn Club Senior Athlete Award for outstanding contributions to UConn athletics. He graduated from UConn with a degree in fi - nance. Pikiell enjoyed a storied career at St. Paul s High School in Bristol, Conn. The three-time all-state selection had his former No. 21 jersey retired after a career in which he ranks among the all-time leaders in points scored, assists and steals. The Bristol, Conn., native is one of nine children and has been an instructor at several summer basketball camps, including his own camp from in Cheshire, Conn. Pikiell and his wife, Kate, have four children: Brooke Elizabeth, 10, John Patrick, 8, Olivia Kathryn, 6, and Kevin Thomas, 3.
