The Seawolves have a twogame lead over Vermont and Boston University in the loss column heading into the home stretch with just four games remaining. The Seawolves are putting their 16-game home conference winning streak on the line tonight. This is the 3rd all-time meeting between the two teams, and the Seawolves lead the series Stony Brook has won nine straight matchups, and is 7- all-time against UMBC at home. A win tonight will clinch Stony Brook s third 0-win season in its last four years. Scouting UMBC The Retrievers are coming off a tough OT loss to New Hampshire in which they lost a 17-point, first-half lead only to see Brian Neller tie the game with a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the second half. UMBC then succumbed to the Wildcats in overtime, dropping the Retrievers to 1-1 on the road overall and 1-5 in America East. UMBC s lone win away from home this season was at Binghamton. Ryan Cook is the team s leading scorer at 14.7 PPG, but three different Retrievers other than Cook have led the team in points over the last six games. Defense continues to be UMBC s Achilles heel; the Retrievers are allowing conference opponents to score a league-worst 69.9 points per game. Last Time Out Stony Brook converted 13 Vermont turnovers into 4 points and held the Catamounts to 36.7% shooting as the Seawolves came away with a win over Vermont at a raucous sold-out Pritchard Gymnasium. Marcus Rouse provided instant offense off the bench with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Jameel Warney posted his fifth double-double of the season with 1 points and 10 rebounds. Tommy Brenton added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. The result was in large part due to defense and taking advantage of it. The Seawolves forced 13 UVM turnovers that turned into 4 points. Rouse s Home Cooking Perhaps no one enjoys the Pritchard Gymnasium rims more than Marcus Rouse. The senior guard is averaging 9.8 points and shooting 5.6% from the field and 58.1% (8-for-43) from three-point range in home games this season. Taking Care of the Basketball Over the last five games, Stony Brook has done a good job of limiting turnovers. The team is averaging just 10.0 turnovers per game during this span while averaging 1.4 assists. Going for 0 Prior to the season, Stony Brook s best win total as a Div. I program was 17. Now, the Seawolves are going for their 0th win tonight, which would give them 0-win seasons in three of the last four seasons. Rolling the Retrievers Stony Brook s win at UMBC on Jan. 3 was the Seawolves ninth consecutive victory over the Retrievers, which dates back to their first encounter of the season. The winning streak over UMBC matches a program best over one opponent. Pritchard Palace Since returning to Pritchard Gymnasium prior to the season, the Seawolves are (.746) in the building. They had a 15-game Pritchard winning streak snapped earlier this season, but the Seawolves do have another streak on the line: they have won 16 consecutive conference home games, dating back to February 011. Dominating the Conference of Late The Feb. 15 win over Vermont evened Steve Pikiell s all-time America East record at 6-6. What s amazing is that after struggling in his first three seasons (9-39), Pikiell has led the Seawolves to a 53-3 conference record since the start of the season America East Overall Team Record Pct. The Seawolves got 31 points from their reserves, including 1 from Carson Puriefoy, who added six assists and five rebounds in 18 minutes of action. Blackout It s not every day you hold a conference s secondleading scorer without any points, but that s exactly what Stony Brook did at Albany on Jan. 9. Great Danes guard Mike Black came into the game as America East s second-leading scorer, but the Seawolves defense held him scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting. Historic Game for Brenton Tommy Brenton had a game for the ages against Maine on Jan. 6. He posted the school s first triple-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. It s the first by an America East player since Northeastern s Shawn James on Feb. 7, 005 and according to ESPN Stats and Information, he s the first player in Division I to have 15 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists and two steals in a game since UConn s Ben Gordon did it in 003. Five of his 11 assists, which were a career high, came on alley oop passes. More on the T-D ESPN Stats and Infotmation also reported that only three other players in the last 15 years have recorded 15 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in a game - Siena s Kojo Mensah (005), UConn s Ben Gordon (003) and Utah s Andre Miller (1998). In addition, the last three players to average 8 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for a season (which Brenton is currently doing) are Iowa State s Royce White, Ohio State s Evan Turner and Louisville s Terrence Williams, who all went on to the NBA. #SCTop10 Brenton had a big hand in getting Stony Brook some national attention - his lob pass to Scott King for a one-handed alley oop dunk in the first half vs. Maine was No. 5 on ESPN SportsCenter s Top 10 Plays. Watch it here - Resulting Honors Brenton s historic day made him the choice for America East Player of the Week honors on Jan. 8. Including the game at UMBC, Brenton averaged 13.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.5 steals on the week. It s the second time in his career he s earned the award and the 11th time in program history.

DEE-FENCE Stony Brook exhibited some excellent defense in its 6-37 win at Binghamton on Jan. 9. The Seawolves held the Bearcats to season lows in points scored and field goal percentage (.64). The 37 points allowed is the fewest SB has given up in a game this season and fewest since also allowing 37 to Hartford back in January 01. The Seawolves are seeking their third regular season championship in the last four seasons. They are 8-5 in their last 33 conference games, dating back to February 011. Historic Start The Seawolves surpassed the team for best 5-game start in the program s Div. I history at With a win tonight, Stony Brook will have the program s best 6-game start ever, surpassing the team (19-7). The team s 10- conference start is second only to last year s 1-1 start. A New Record Holder This season Tommy Brenton has broken two Stony Brook career records. On Dec. 11, he surpassed Yves Simon for most career rebounds. Then on Jan. 1, he again surpassed Simon in the steals category. Brenton was profiled in New York Post on Dec and in the Baltimore Sun on Dec In the Rankings In the NCAA Rankings, Tommy Brenton is 74th in assists at 4.8 per game and 6nd in assist/ turnover ratio (.). Jameel Warney would rank fifth in the country in field goal percentage (.64) but is currently just short of the NCAA minimum of five makes per game. In America East, Jameel Warney leads in field goal percentage (.64) and is second in blocked shots (1.6/gm) and fifth in rebounding (7.6/gm), Tommy Brenton is fourth in rebounding (8.3/gm), second in assists (4.8/gm), first in assist/turnover ratio (.) and fourth in steals (1.6/gm), and Marcus Rouse is first in 3-point field goal percentage (.436). New Faces, Same Defense Stony Brook s defense has been ferocious. The team leads America East in FG pct. defense (.373) and scoring defense (57.5 PPG). The team also has the league s best rebounding margin at +5.8 and most blocked shots at 4.0/game. Offense Ain t Bad Either The Seawolves are currently sporting America East s third-best scoring offense at 67.3 points a game. The team also has the league s best scoring margin (+9.8) and fourth-best field goal pct (.434). Attacking the Glass Defense and rebounding is Stony Brook s game, and the team takes pride in outrebounding its foes. The Seawolves have outrebounded their opponents in 40 of their last 49 games played, dating back to Jan. 01. Lockdown Defender Dave Coley is enjoying an All-Conference caliber type of season and its in large part due to his outstanding defense on the perimeter. Often asked to guard the opponent s best scorer, Coley has often kept his foes under their season average for scoring. Opponent Avg. vs. Coley Season Avg. Mike Black, UA Jimmy Gray, Bing D.J. Irving, BU Yolanzo Moore, Hart Brian Neller, UMBC D is the Key The math is usually simple for Stony Brook and its defense: hold the opponent under 60 points and it s a victory. The Seawolves were 16-1 last season, 15-0 this season and in the Pikiell Era when holding their opponent under 60 points. Takeaways Part of Stony Brook s success on defense has been creating turnovers. The Seawolves have forced their opponents into 10+ turnovers in all but three games this year, surpassing the 15-turnover mark 10 times. The Line s the Key Over the last two years, Stony Brook s win-loss record could be tied to its ability to get to the free throw line more than its foes. Since the start of 011-1, SB is 35-4 in games in which it has equal or more free throw attempts than its opponents and 6-1 in games in which it has fewer attempts. Incredible Academic Progress Head coach Steve Pikiell came into Stony Brook with a team on NCAA probation for poor academics. In , prior to Pikiell s arrival, the team s rolling Academic Progress Rate (APR) according to the NCAA was 880 and that particular team s APR was 804. In back-to-back years ( & ), the team achieved a perfect 1000, and the program s current rolling APR according to the NCAA is 980, an incredible turnaround in a short period of time. Fall Scholars Stony Brook student-athletes enjoyed a tremendous fall semester in the classroom. Half of the team posted grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher, and overall the team posted its best-ever singlesemester GPA. Reaching the Century Mark With the win at Cornell on Nov. 8, head coach Steve Pikiell earned his 100th win at Stony Brook, a milestone well deserved as turning around the program from being the worst in America East to the best. Since the start of the season, Pikiell has led the Seawolves to a (.645) record. Stony Brook Arena - Fall 014 Stony Brook Arena, Long Island s new athletic and entertainment destination, is currently under a $1.1 million renovation and is slated to re-open in Fall 014.
