3 LAST TIME OUT The Seawolves trailed until the very last play of the game, stringing together a 21-0 run in the final 5:55 of play to top Albany Down 21 points in the final 10 minutes, the win marked the largest deficit overcome for victory in program history. A three from junior Bryan Sekunda helped start the run for the Seawolves, who continued to press against Albany and it paid off when senior Lucas Woodhouse got a steal off the full-court pressure and was immediately fouled, making both free throws. The free throws sparked 10 straight points for Woodhouse, which included another trip to the line and a pair of threes, to get Stony Brook back within four with 2:30 to play. Sturdivant, who scored his first field goal of the day with just over six minutes remaining in the game, put back a missed three by Sekunda to make it a two-point game with 1:38 left. On the other end, junior Roland Nyama came up with a steal and was fouled on the play. He made both free throws to tie things up at 70 as the clock headed under a minute. A late turnover by Woodhouse on the ensuing possession threatened to be costly with 43 seconds left in the game, but Albany s Joe Cremo mishandled the ball on the other end and Stony Brook got another chance to win it. Woodhouse drove the left side and fed Sturdivant, who appeared wide open in the lane and made the uncontested layup, leaving less than a second on the clock. CLUTCH WEEK Junior Tyrell Sturdivant had a clutch opening week of America East play, sinking the game-winner in each of the first two games. Sturdivant made a hook shot with 15 seconds remaining at UNH to put the Seawolves up three, and later scored an open layup with 0.6 seconds on the clock, giving Stony Brook its first lead of the day and sealing the victory over Albany. LARGEST COMEBACK The Seawolves trailed Albany by 21 points with 7:02 left to play and eventually overcame the deficit to claim victory and mark the largest comeback in program history. The comeback sits as the third largest deficit overcome under the 10-minute mark in NCAA history. Trailing by 14 points with five minutes remaining, it is the fourth largest deficit overcome in that period of time in NCAA history. DOWN TO THE WIRE Stony Brook has seen nine of its 15 games this season be decided in the final minute of play. It sits at 5-4 on the season in this situation. I m very excited for Jeff, his family, and Stony Brook University. Jeff has done a remarkable job at The Ohio State University in his seven years as a Buckeye. He is certainly ready to be a head coach and has an amazing opportunity at such a fine institution. Jeff has a great basketball mind and will bring energy and enthusiasm to the great situation that Stony Brook University offers. -Thad Matta, Ohio State Head Men s Basketball Coach Knowing that he is pursuing his dreams to be a head coach is big time. He has always been super supportive and a major mentor to me and my family throughout my process, thanks once again. P.S. Just became a Stony Brook fan. - D Angelo Russell, Los Angeles Lakers Congrats to Stony Brook and Jeff Boals, who I can say with 100 percent sincerity is a coach who still coaches me to this day. Best of luck JB. - Jared Sullinger, Boston Celtics Jeff Boals will be a great addition to the Stony Brook community. His commitment, passion, and knowledge of the game is second to none. I m excited to see the rise of the Stony Brook basketball program! - Evan Turner, Boston Celtics Jeff is a consummate professional, excellent teacher and person! He will be missed!! - Gene Smith, Ohio State Director of Athletics The first thing about Jeff is that he s won everywhere he s been. I like to think of Jeff as a diversified coach.
