Sitting at 25-5 on the year, the Catamounts last loss came at then-no. 13 Butler on Dec. 21, Payton Henson, Trae Bell-Haynes and Anthony Lamb all pace Vermont in scoring with just over 11 points per game. The Catamounts rank ninth in the nation, shooting 49.4-percent from the field on the year. Vermont is outscoring its opponents by 10.4 ppg, and outrebounding opponents by 4.2 boards per game, good for 30th and 50th in the country, respectively. THE SERIES The Catamounts lead the all-time series against Stony Brook, After taking the first meeting, 91-60, in January, 2002, Vermont went on to win the first nine games of the series. Stony Brook has turned it around as of late, claiming three of the last five meetings. Vermont took the first meeting this season, topping the Seawolves in New York. Senior Lucas Woodhouse led the way with 22 points. The two teams each earned a road win last season before Stony Brook topped the Catamounts, 80-74, at Island Federal Credit Union Arena in the America East Tournament championship. The power forward averaged 8.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as a junior as his squad made it three straight Friend s League championships. JORDAN MCKENZIE GUARD CONCORD, N.C. McKenzie was a four-year letterwinner at Jay M. Robinson High School before arriving at Hargrave Military Academy for a post graduate year. He averaged 16.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game as a senior at Robinson, helping his team to a 3A state championship. McKenzie was a 1,000-point scorer and earned all-state as well as all-conference honors while at Robinson. CORRY LONG GUARD CINCINNATI, OHIO Long enters his final season at Cincinnati Hughes High School after averaging 19 points per game as a junior. Long was named First Team All-District 16, Enquirer First Team All-City and First Team All-CMAC following his junior season. As a sophomore, he averaged 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. ELIJAH OLANIYI FORWARD NEWARK, N.J. Olaniyi is coming off a strong junior season at Newark East Side that saw him average 10.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He strung together seven straight games of double-figure scoring and notched a double-double on six occasions. Following the impressive year, Olaniyi was named to the All-Group 4 first team. 3 LAST TIME OUT The Seawolves ended their six-game win streak as they stumbled at UMBC, UMBC got things going right away, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes of play. Junior Roland Nyama finally got the Seawolves on the board and scored the team s first seven points. He hit double figures with just inside nine minutes remaining in the first half when he drained his second three of the night. The Retrievers used a 10-2 run to up the difference to double figures and continued a steady push to take a 15-point lead into the break. After both teams had a slow start to the second half, UMBC head coach Ryan Odom was issued two technical fouls and as a result, ejected from the game. Nyama went to the line and made all four free throws to make it a five-point game and junior Tyrell Sturdivant scored a layup less than a minute later to get the Seawolves back within a possession at Stony Brook hung around, but the Retrievers strung together a 9-0 run to go back up double figures with 4:04 left to play and never looked back. HIGH PERFORMANCE WEEK Junior Roland Nyama has been hot for the Seawolves as of late. After a strong second half to help Stony Brook top Albany on the road, he responded in the quick turnaround with a then-season best 19 points to lead the Seawolves past UMass Lowell just two days later. He closed out the week as the catalyst for Stony Brook against Maine, scoring 16 of his career-best 26 points in the first half and sealed the victory, making a free throw with 0.5 left on the clock to put the Seawolves up one. Nyama was named America East Player of the Week for the first time in his career for his outstanding play. TWENTY-PLUS Senior Lucas Woodhouse has been a leader for the Seawolves all season, especially on the offensive end. He strung together four-straight 20-plus point games against the top five teams in the America East. Woodhouse has surpassed the 20-point mark seven times this season. FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE Woodhouse is tied for 13th in the nation and leads the league from the free throw line, shooting 90-percent from the line on the year. Woodhouse made 30 consecutive free throws to begin conference play. Earlier in the year against Northeastern, Woodhouse went 8-for-8 in the final 1:38 of the win before setting a new career best the next game with 12 makes on 12 attempts against Lehigh. HELPING HAND Woodhouse currently leads the America East and is 38th in the nation with 5.4 assists per game. Woodhouse also sits at 23rd in the country in assist-turnover ratio (2.83) while the team ranks 57th (1.26). Against Vermont, Woodhouse dished out five assists and did not commit a turnover. This marked the fourth time this season he did not have a turnover while tallying at least four assists. CLEAN PLAY Stony Brook has limited itself in turnovers all season, keeping the number in single digits on 12 occasions. The Seawolves are tied for 22nd in the nation in turnover margin (3.2). They have committed more turnovers than their opponent on just three occasions this year. Stony Brook most recently had just eight mishaps at UMBC. LEAGUE PLAY The Seawolves are in their 16th season of America East play, sitting at in regular season league action and are coming off of a regular season and tournament title in The team notched its third 5-0 start to America East play in program history, all coming in the last four seasons. The win at New Hampshire marked the ninth straight season Stony Brook has opened conference play with a victory. DOWN TO THE WIRE Stony Brook has seen 12 of its 28 games this season be decided in the final minute of play. It sits at 7-5 on the year in this situation. Most recently, the Seawolves topped Maine, 67-66, as Nyama made a free throw with 0.5 seconds left on the clock after being fouled on a tip-in final attempt to break the late tie. STRONG AT HOME In their third season playing in Island Federal Credit Union Arena, the Seawolves are 36-8 at home. They have dropped just four non-conference games in the home building. NO. 20 RETIRED At halftime of the game against Binghamton, Stony Brook retired Jameel Warney s No. 20 jersey. The winningest player in program history, Warney is the all-time leader at Stony Book in points, rebounds, blocks and games played. He helped the Seawolves to a regular season and tournament conference championship in his final season, concluding his career with the program s first Division I NCAA Tournament appearance. SCORING IN THE FIRST Junior Tyrell Sturdivant had back-to-back games of huge first-half play. He kept the Seawolves in the mix at Maine, putting up 12 of his 16 points in the first 20 minutes. He followed that up with a career-best 28-point performance at UMass Lowell, scoring 16 points and going 7-for-7 from the field in the first half. Four different players have tallied double figure points in the first half this season. Woodhouse leads the way as he has tallied double-digit first-half points six times, while Nyama s 16 first-half points against Maine, and Sturdivant s 16 at UMass Lowell are the most by any Seawolf this season. 4 career for his play at Maine. He came off the bench to add 13 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Earlier in the season he averaged 17.0 points and 4.5 rebounds through the 1-1 week for the Seawolves. After scoring 16 points, also adding six rebounds, in the win over Lehigh, Yeboah upped his numbers as he put up 18 in a nail-biter against Rutgers. CLUTCH WEEK Sturdivant had a clutch opening week of America East play, sinking the game-winner in each of the first two games. Sturdivant made a hook shot with 15 seconds remaining at UNH to put the Seawolves up three, and later scored an open layup with 0.6 seconds on the clock, giving Stony Brook its first lead of the day and sealing the victory over Albany. LARGEST COMEBACK The Seawolves trailed Albany by 21 points with 7:02 left to play and eventually overcame the deficit to claim victory and mark the largest comeback in program history. The comeback sits as the third largest deficit overcome under the 10-minute mark in NCAA history. Trailing by 14 points with five minutes remaining, it is the fourth largest deficit overcome in that period of time in NCAA history. CLOSING NON-CONFERENCE ON A HIGH NOTE The Seawolves rallied for the most points they have scored since the season opener, as they topped Brown on the road, Woodhouse matched his career best, set as a player at Longwood, with 27 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Yeboah notched the first 20-point game of his career as he helped lead four players in double figures. TRIO LIFTS SEAWOLVES PAST ST. FRANCIS Top performances from Woodhouse, Junior Saintel and Bryan Sekunda helped the Seawolves pick up a win before the holiday break. Woodhouse neared a triple-double as he finished with 17 points, nine assists and nine boards. Sekunda went off in the second half to score a season-best 17 points, including five threes. Saintel returned to the starting lineup and notched the first double-figure scoring game of his career with 15 points, and added six rebounds in the road victory. ALMONACY BREAKS OUT AT HOFSTRA Freshman Michael Almonacy had a breakout game at Hofstra, going off for 15 points while also adding three assists and three rebounds. This was the first time this season the Long Island native has scored in double figures. SUCCESS IN A NEW ROLE Upperclassmen Woodhouse and Sturdivant have taken on new roles this season as full-time starters and leaders for the Seawolves. The pair remains as the only two players to start every game this season. Woodhouse, who started just half of the games in his first season at Stony Brook, has doubled his production in his final year from 6.7 to 14.9 ppg. Sturdivant saw just 11.8 minutes per game last season, averaging just over three points and rebounds per game. This season Sturdivant leads the Seawolves in rebounding and is second in scoring. HOT FROM BEYOND THE ARC The Seawolves heated up from three-point range against Northeastern, sinking a season-high 13 attempts from beyond the arc. Sekunda led the hot-shooting night going 4-for-5 from three, while juniors UC Iroegbu and Nyama added three threes each. The victory over the Huskies marked the third straight game Iroegbu made at least three shots from downtown. FIRST WINS FOR BOALS Head coach Jeff Boals earned the first win of his head coaching and Stony Brook career as the Seawolves topped Hampton, 76-66, on Nov. 26, Boals added his first home win on Dec. 3, 2016 as Stony Brook held on to top Northeastern, The last-second win at New Hampshire on Jan. 5, 2017 marked the first America East victory of Boals careeer. WOODHOUSE SPARKS SEAWOLVES IN WINS Woodhouse put up all 17 of his points in the second half against Hampton, the Seawolves first victory of the year. He also added a career-high four steals, including a momentum-shifting take-away while pressing that helped extend the early end of Stony Brook s first lead of the game with under seven minutes remaining in the game. Woodhouse had another clutch performance in the victory over Northeastern as he again finished with 17 points and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:38 of the game to secure the win. STURDIVANT SHINES AGAINST EAGLES Sturdivant took over late at Boston College to help get Stony Brook back within four points after trailing by as many as 23 in the game. With 5:15 left to play, Sturdivant scored 13 of the Seawolves next 15 points to make it a two-possession game with under a minute to play. He finished with 26 points. WE MEET AGAIN Stony Brook traveled to Maryland in the early part of the year to take on the Terps for the third time in program history. The Seawolves will open the season against Maryland at the new Nassau Coliseum. This will be the first meeting in the series that will not be played in College Park, Maryland. GARCIA OUT FOR STONY BROOK Freshman Andrew Garcia will miss the entire season after undergoing surgery on his right knee. The Harlem, New York, native attended the Master s School in Connecticut, missing most of his senior year due to injury. He averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game as a junior, earning honorable mention All-Class AA. 4 STRONG START Stony Brook saw three players reach double figures in scoring in the season opener against Columbia as Nyama led the way with 16 points off the bench and Sturdivant notched the second double-double of his career with 11 and 10 in the game. Yeboah made his collegiate debut and put up 11 points and seven boards in the game. A NEW ERA The Columbia game marked the start of a new era for Stony Brook men s basketball as first-time head coach Jeff Boals coached his first game after being named to the position in April He spent the last seven seasons as an assistant at Ohio State. This season, Boals and his staff direct a team with five newcomers and a pair of redshirt freshmen. Stony Brook also added three junior college transfers in Iroegbu, Saintel, and sophomore Blair Mendy. RAISING THE BANNER Prior to the Columbia game the Seawolves raised two banners honoring the season that saw the first Division I NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, which came after the team won its first America East Conference Tournament. Stony Brook positioned itself for a successful conference tournament run after claiming its fourth America East regular season title.

9 JEFF BOALS HEAD COACH FIRST SEASON OHIO, 1995 Jeff Boals was named head men s basketball coach at Stony Brook University by Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron on April 9, He arrived at Stony Brook after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State. A member of Thad Matta s staff since , Boals [pronounced BOWLS] helped guide Ohio State to seven postseason appearances, including six NCAA Tournaments. The Buckeyes, who won or claimed a share of three Big 10 titles, advanced to the Final Four in Ohio State went during Boals time in Columbus. Boals spent two seasons ( ) at Robert Morris and four years ( ) at Marshall. In his final season at Robert Morris, the Colonials posted their first winning record in 15 seasons. He also spent a total of four seasons at Division II University of Charleston in two different stints. A 1995 graduate of Ohio University, Boals was a two-time captain and four-year letterwinner for the Bobcats, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in The following year, Ohio University won the Preseason NIT Championship after wins over Ohio State and No. 14 Virginia, as well as George Washington and New Mexico State at Madison Square Garden. Boals was instrumental in bringing some of Boals and his wife, Katie, have two children, the top players in the nation to Ohio State, including current NBA stars Jared Sullinger and D Angelo Russell, Sydney and Chase. along with Aaron Craft, the all-time steals and assist leader in Ohio State history. He also coached the 2010 National Player of the Year, Evan Turner, during his outstanding collegiate career with the Buckeyes. Prior to Ohio State, Boals spent three seasons at Akron, serving as the team s recruiting coordinator and working with the post players. The Zips advanced to three Mid-American Conference championship games, winning the title in It was Akron s first NCAA Tournament berth since Boals also recruited Anthony Humpty Hitchens, a MAC All-Freshman Performer, and Zeke Marshall, a top-35 national recruit. 9 What They re Saying About Jeff Boals...
