The #Seawolves return seven letterwinners, but lost four starters from last season s 23-win team that earned a national postseason berth. This year s squad has no seniors, but is led by 2014 America East Player of the Year Jameel Warney and second-team All-America East guard Carson Puriefoy. Postseason Bids Continue Thanks to qualifying for the College Basketball Invitational last March, Stony Brook has now earned a national postseason bid for three consecutive seasons and for the fourth time in the last five years. New Season, New Arena Stony Brook has moved into its beautiful new home - Island Federal Credit Union Arena, which underwent a two-year, $21.1 million renovation. The new 4,000- seat facility has many fan-friendly amenities, including video boards, expanded concessions and restrooms, a VIP Lounge, luxury suites and more. The arena s title sponsor is Island Federal Credit Union, which has partnered with Stony Brook University on a comprehensive 10-year, $7 million deal that also includes title sponsorship for the 20-year old Stony Brook Film Festival; partnership in banking education through the Stony Brook University College of Business; support for Stony Brook Medicine programs including the new Stony Brook Children s Hospital and the Long Island State Veterans Home; and, a commitment to support and provide benefits to Stony Brook University alumni. Maude Madness Now situated in the brand new Island Federal Credit Union Arena, Stony Brook has officially closed its time in Pritchard Gymnasium, which is named for William & Maude Pritchard. Since returning to playing in the gym prior to the season, the #Seawolves were (.763) in the building. They won 37 of the last 41 games played at Pritchard and sold out the last 10 games there. Young Team After graduating four seniors from last season s team, this Stony Brook squad enters the season with no seniors, five juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen. Stony Brook is one of 12 teams in the nation to enter this season with no freshmen on the roster. The average amount of experience this team has is one year, which ranks 309th out of 351 Div. I teams. Meet the New Kids There are five freshmen on the roster, including redshirt freshman Roland Nyama, who came to Stony Brook last year from the Holderness School and is a native of Germany. Rutgers 71 wins (12-21) Petras, Bryan Sekunda, Tyrell Sturdivant and Deshaun Thrower. Petras is a 6-11 center and comes from Slovakia by way of the Canarias Basketball Academy in the Canary Islands. Sekunda, son of a former college basketball player, comes from State College, Pa., and is a three-point shooter. Sturdivant was a star at Chester High School in Chester, Pa. Thrower was Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan, leading Muskegon High Schol to a state championship as a senior. D is the Key The math is usually simple for Stony Brook and its defense: hold the opponent under 60 points and it s a victory. The #Seawolves were 9-0 last season, 20-0 in and in the Pikiell Era when holding their opponent under 60 points. In Select Company After being named America East Player of the Year last March, Jameel Warney joined a select group of players in America East history. He was just the sixth sophomore to ever earn the honor. He also was one of just four players in league history to be named Rookie of the Year and then take Player of the Year the very next season. He joined Northeastern s Reggie Lewis and Vermont s T.J. Sorrentine and Taylor Coppenrath in that group. Warney in the Conversation On Nov. 12, Jameel Warney was named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List. The Lou Henson Award is given to the National Mid-Major Player of the Year. Warney was a Mid-Major All-American as a sophomore after ranking fifth in the nation in field goal percentage. Conference Domination Stony Brook has thoroughly dominated America East over the last few seasons. The entire senior class of 2012 signed professional contracts graduates Dave Coley and Eric McAlister are both playing pro now as well. Coley is in Slovakia, and McAlister is in Denmark. In total, 11 #Seawolves that played for head coach Steve Pikiell have turned pro. Incredible Academic Progress Head coach Steve Pikiell came into Stony Brook with a team on NCAA probation for poor academics. In , prior to Pikiell s arrival, the team s rolling Academic Progress Rate (APR) according to the NCAA was 880 and that particular team s APR was 804. Now for four consecutive years ( , and , ), the team has achieved a perfect 1000, and the program s current rolling APR according to the NCAA is 995, the highest among the Metropolitan New York schools. Amazing Turnaround Stony Brook s fourth 20-win season in the last five years continues to tell the story of the program s turnaround under head coach Steve Pikiell. In his first season, Stony Brook was 4-24 overall and 2-14 in America East. By his fifth season, the team won the league with a 13-3 record. Now Stony Brook has become a force in America East and is annually competing for the league championship. The #Seawolves have the second-most America East wins in the nine-team conference since the start of the season. Welcome Home BD In October, Stony Brook welcomed home one of its own as Bryan Dougher was named Director of Men s Basketball Operations. Dougher, who graduated from Stony Brook in 2012, was a four-year starter for the #Seawolves and became the program s all-time leading scorer in its Div. I history with 1,609 points. He also holds the program s all-time overall record of three-pointers made with 337, which is over 100 more than the next closest player. Dougher led Stony Brook to America East regular season championships and NIT appearances in 2010 and After graduating, Dougher played two seasons of professional basketball in Australia, where he set multiple three-point records and was runner-up for league MVP.
