WARNEY HONORED BY USA BASKETBALL Former Stony Brook standout Jameel Warney was named USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year on Friday, Dec. 15. Warney helped USA Basketball earn a gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 over the summer and was named MVP of the tournament. He is currently playing for the Texas Legends of the NBA G League. Warney stands as the all-time leader in points (2,132), rebounds (1,275) and blocks (276) at Stony Brook, after helping the program to its first America East Playoff title and NCAA Tournament appearance SIGNEES ALEX CHRISTIE CENTER OAKVILLE, ONTARIO Christie is in his second season at The MacDuffie School in Massachusetts. He spent this past summer playing AAU ball for BABC on the Nike circuit. Christie helped his team to a U19 AAU national championship in Florida over the summer. MILES LATIMER GUARD FAIRFAX, VA. Latimer is in his senior season at Paul VI after helping the squad to a 29-8 overall record and 15-3 record in league play as a junior. The three-point shooter played AAU ball for Team Takeover during the offseason, which earned a spot in the EYBL championship game. JULES MOOR GUARD PEARLAND, TEXAS Moor got off to a strong start in his post graduate year at Hargrave Military Academy, scoring in double figures in each of the team s first two games. The combo guard was a two-time first team all-district honoree at Dawson High School as a junior and senior. He helped his team to a 28-7 record and regional semifinal appearance as a senior. Moor played AAU ball for adidas Texas Elite. 2

3 LEAGUE PLAY The Seawolves are currently in their 17th season of America East play, sitting at in regular season league action. They advanced to their eighth straight America East Playoff semifinal following a second-place finish last season. Stony Brook has opened conference play with a victory in each of the last 10 seasons after topping Maine, This is the third straight season the Seawolves have gotten out to a 2-0 start to league play. DOWN TO THE WIRE Stony Brook has seen ten games be decided in the final minute of play this season, most recently against Albany. It was a three-point game as the clock went under a minute, but a late attempt by the Seawlves didn t fall and they were forced to foul the rest of the way. Stony Brook is 4-6 in this situation. The Seawolves opened America East play with backto-back late game-winners as seniors UC Iroegbu and Tyrell Sturdivant hit clutch threes against Maine and Hartford, respectively. STONY BROOK IN OVERTIME The Seawolves are all-time in overtime games after falling at UMass Lowell, The win at Rutgers earlier this season was the first overtime game for the Seawolves since taking Vanderbilt to extra time early in the season, and the first under Jeff Boals. STEALS RECORD Stony Brook matched a program single-game best with 18 steals at Hartford, marking the most steals in a game since The Seawolves lead the America East in the category, averaging 7.95 steals per game. GARCIA MAKES DEBUT Redshirt freshman Andrew Garcia made is collegiate debut against Norfolk State, finishing with nine points and five rebounds in 16 minutes of play. Garcia underwent two right knee surgeries between his final year at The Master s School and first year at Stony Brook, keeping him off the court for nearly two years. CLUTCH PLAY LATE Sturdivant has been the late hero for the Seawolves on two occasions this season, most recently sinking a three with five seconds remaining for the win at Hartford. Earlier this year against St. Francis, Sturdivant battled through his defender to bank in a layup with five seconds on the clock. It was a three from junior Jaron Cornish that tied things at 83-all and Sturdivant was able to draw a charge and get the ball back for the score after St. Francis broke the Seawolves press with ease. RUTGERS OVERTIME THRILLER The Seawolves pulled off a big overtime win at Rutgers after Cornish made a steal and hit a three with three seconds left in regulation to tie it. Senior Jakub Petras was the late hero, making a jumper with.6 seconds left in overtime for the win. This was the first win over a Power 5 team for the Seawolves since topping then-no. 13 Washington on the road, 62-57, in It was also the second win in program history over a Big Ten opponent as they topped Penn State on the road, 59-51, in YEBOAH GOES FOR 30 Redshirt sophomore Akwasi Yeboah scored a careerbest 30 points in the win at Columbia. This was the first time a Stony Brook player has scored 30-plus points in a game since Jameel Warney scored 43 points in the 2016 America East Championship game. SEAWOLVES DOMINATE SHAWNEE STATE Stony Brook took down Shawnee State This was the first time the Seawolves have scored over 100 points since topping USMMA, , on Nov. 14, 2015, and earned its first 40-plus point win since a victory over Farmingdale State on Nov. 28, Senior Bryan Sekunda led five players in double figures with 21 points, including six threes. SPARK OFF THE BENCH Freshman Elijah Olaniyi led the Stony Brook bench through non-conference play. He came alive at Michigan State, scoring 16 points, including a personal 10-0 run in the first half. Olaniyi was named America East Rookie of the Week in back-to-back weeks during his five-game streak of double-figure scoring. Stony Brook s bench has outscored its opponent in 12 of 18 games, including in four of the five high-major games. STRONG AT HOME In their fourth season playing in Island Federal Credit Union Arena, the Seawolves are at home, and 10-9 in home openers, claiming four of their last five. IROEGBU, SAINTEL NOTCH CAREER NUMBERS Iroegbu and Junior Saintel led the way at Ball State with then-career-best performances. Iroegbu put up 18 points in the win and tallied three assists, all on lobs to Saintel at the rim. Saintel notched the second doubledouble of his career with 16 and 10 in the game. YEBOAH AT FIBA CHAMPIONSHIPS Yeboah returned home to England over the summer to play for the country s U20 team in the FIBA European Championships. The Chigwell native averaged 14.3 points and 4.7 boards as he helped his team to a Bronze medal. CHALLENGING START The Seawolves started the season with four straight road games. Through the team s first six games they faced four teams that went to the post season a year ago, including three NCAA Tournament teams - Maryland, Michigan State and Bucknell. 7 Jeff Boals was named head men s basketball coach at Stony Brook University by Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron on April 9, He arrived at Stony Brook after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State. In his first season with the Seawolves, Boals led Stony Brook to a second-place finish in America East, beginning league play with five straight victories. The Seawolves earned a spot in the post season for the sixth straight year with an appearance in the CBI. A member of Thad Matta s staff from , Boals helped guide Ohio State to seven postseason appearances, including six NCAA Tournaments. The Buckeyes, who won or claimed a share of three Big 10 titles, advanced to the Final Four in Ohio State went during Boals time in Columbus. Boals was instrumental in bringing some of the top players in the nation to Ohio State, including current NBA stars Jared Sullinger and D Angelo Russell, along with Aaron Craft, the all-time steals and assist leader in Ohio State history. He also coached the 2010 National Player of the Year, Evan Turner, during his outstanding collegiate career with the Buckeyes. JEFF BOALS HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON OHIO, 1995 Prior to Ohio State, Boals spent three seasons at Akron, serving as the team s recruiting coordinator and working with the post players. The Zips advanced to three Mid-American Conference championship games, winning the title in It was Akron s first NCAA Tournament berth since Boals also recruited Anthony Humpty Hitchens, a MAC All-Freshman Performer, and Zeke Marshall, a top-35 national recruit. Boals spent two seasons ( ) at Robert Morris and four years ( ) at Marshall. In his final season at Robert Morris, the Colonials posted their first winning record in 15 seasons. He also spent a total of four seasons at Division II University of Charleston in two different stints. A 1995 graduate of Ohio University, Boals was a two-time captain and four-year letterwinner for the Bobcats, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in The following year, Ohio University won the Preseason NIT Championship after wins over Ohio State and No. 14 Virginia, as well as George Washington and New Mexico State at Madison Square Garden. Boals and his wife, Katie, have two children, Sydney and Chase. ON THE BENCH GENO FORD assistant coach - second season Geno Ford joined the Stony Brook staff in June of Ford, who has spent 23 years in college basketball, was formerly the head coach at Bradley and Kent State, and most recently served as an analyst on the ESPN family of networks prior to Stony Brook. In his second season at Bradley, Ford guided the Braves to the seventh-best win improvement in the country, going from 7-25 in to the following season. Ford produced a (.648) record in his three seasons as head coach at Kent State ( ), including a (.729) mark in the MAC. In addition to his two MAC Coach of the Year awards, Ford was the 2009 NABC District 14 Coach of the Year. He became the first MAC coach in 48 seasons to win back-to-back regular-season titles in and As an assistant coach at Kent State for four seasons ( ; ), the Golden Flashes went (.708), earning four postseason bids, including an NCAA berth in Ford s first head coaching position came at Shawnee State ( ), and he also spent two seasons as the head coach at Muskingum ( ), which posted a 17-9 record, the school s best in the last 25 years, in BRYAN WEBER assistant coach - second season Bryan Weber joined Jeff Boals staff on April 21, 2016, after spending three seasons with the Hoop Group in New Jersey, serving as Director of Operations for one season and Hoop Group Elite for two. The Hoop Group is the nation s biggest exposure camp for the best high school players in the country. Weber was a graduate assistant at the University of Miami in The Hurricanes won the regular season and ACC Tournament championships that year before advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 13 years. Prior to his time at Miami, he was on the staff at Akron as Director of Operations in , when the Zips captured their first Mid-American Conference regular season title. LAMAR THORNTON assistant coach - first season Lamar Thornton joined the Stony Brook men s basketball staff as an assist coach in July of Thornton served as a graduate assistant and video coordinator at Toldeo during the season. While at Toledo, Thornton s responsibilities included player development, analytic breakdowns, video coordinator, assisting in organizing the program s annual summer camps and the coordination of the Rockets community relations efforts. Thornton was a member of the staff that earned Toledo its third postseason appearance in the last six years with a trip to the 2017 College Basketball Invitational. Thornton spent the season as an assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy. Thornton helped Hargrave post a 47-1 record en-route to capturing its third national championship. ANDREW GOLDSTEIN dir. basketball operations - second season Andrew Goldstein joined Jeff Boals staff in April of Goldstein joins the staff after spending two seasons as the assistant video coordinator at Ohio State. In this role, Goldstein helped in the overall operation of the basketball program, assisting the video coordinator with scouting reports. Goldstein played for the Buckeyes in and , as they earned a pair of berths in NCAA Tournaments. 7
