3 Antwan Hardy made his biggest impact since the turn of the New Year, netting 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting against the Bearcats in 20 minutes of action. Better D Stony Brook held Binghamton to just 33.3% shooting from the floor, the lowest percentage by a Seawolf opponent this season. Binghamton shot 16-for-48 from the field for 37 points. The Bearcats other 26 points came from the charity stripe Brace For Impact Mitchell Beauford has established himself as an impact player for the Seawolves. In terms of overall team scoring: (Beauford s freshman season) the team averaged 62.6 ppg (first six games with Beauford) the team averaged 62.8 ppg - he was averaging close to 17 per game at the time of the injury and the team was 3-3. (without Beauford) the team averaged 60.8 ppg and went 9-14 the rest of the way (first six games without Beauford) - team averaged 50.2 ppg - team was 0-6 (the last seven with him) the team is averaging 57.1 ppg - team is 3-4 In terms of free throw shooting: The first six games without Beauford, Stony Brook shot (.447) from the free throw line The last seven games with Beauford - Stony Brook has gone (.607) from the free throw line. The Seawolves have made more free throws than they had attempted without Beauford and increased their shooting percentage by 15%. Welcome To Bobby s World Bobby Santiago had his best game in a Seawolf uniform in the Vermont win. Santiago tied his career high in points with 23, going 8 of 15 from the field, including a 4-for-8 performance from downtown. He also led the team in rebounds (3), assists (3) and steals (3). Santiago has now scored in double digits in five of the last seven games. In the Seawolves first two wins this season, Santiago has combined for 28 points on shooting (50%). He snagged nine boards and recorded four steals and four assists. He has led his team from the charity stripe as well, going a perfect 9-9. Taking Care Of The Ball The Seawolves have started to take care of the ball, limiting their turnovers in their three wins. Facing Dartmouth, the Seawolves committed just nine turnovers. Against Vermont, Stony Brook turned the ball over just six times, while against Colgate, Stony Brook had 13. Stony Brook s defense has also picked up, pressuring their opponents into increased turnovers on their end. Vermont committed 19 turnovers while Colgate had 21 in their loss. The 40 turnovers is the most the Seawolves have caused in consecutive games. The six turnovers were the Seawolves lowest of the season. Their previous low was 11 against Columbia on November 26. The six turnovers were also the lowest in a game by the Seawolves since Stony Brook became a Division I team in the season. It s Good To Be Back Mitchell Beauford has had a large impact since returning to the Seawolf lineup. Beauford leads the team in scoring with 15.9 points per game. Tying a career-high 22 points at Dartmouth, Beauford once again hit a key lay-up with 33 seconds left to propel the Seawolves to victory. In one of his best all-around efforts, Beauford poured in 17 points, six boards, four assists, and three steals at Binghamton. Beauford registered 16 points versus Vermont, but more importantly, he delivered the game-winning three point play with 1.5 seconds to seal the victory for the Seawolves. He netted a season-high 20 points against Colgate, going 7-18 from the field and 6-9 from the free throw line in 24 minutes of action. In just his third game this season, Beauford started his second contest vs. Wagner and poured in 13 points while grabbing six boards and dishing five assists. Beauford also picked up the starting nod against UConn and netted a team-high 14 points at the Hartford Civic Center. He also added two rebounds and two assists along with a steal. Career Night For Tre... Again Tre Cunningham has emerged in the last few games as serious threat for the Seawolves. Against Colgate, Cunningham set a new-career high in points (15) and rebounds (8). Cunningham had stepped up in the Wagner game several days before, netting a previous best 14 points in a loss. Showing Improvements at the Line The Seawolves, who are just shooting 53 percent from the foul line on the season, have improved drastically. Against Colgate, the Seawolves shot (69.7%) in their most trips to the charity stripe this season. Bobby Santiago sank all six of his free throws and Cunningham went 6-8 to lead the team. Stony Brook went (70.6%) against Wagner. Beauford went 5-8 and Cunningham hit 5-6 to lead Stony Brook. Hitting The Glass Before the Colgate game, the Seawolves have been dominated on the boards in their last two contests, being outrebounded and on the offensive glass. Against Colgate, Stony Brook responded by outrebounding their opponents 40-25, including a 22-advantage on the offensive glass. Cunningham snagged eight boards, four of which were offensive, and all six of Mike Popoko s rebounds were on the offensive side of the ball. Getting Defensive The Seawolves held UConn to a 42.9% shooting performance, which was the Huskies second-lowest of the season. Stephane Making Contributions Freshman Stephane Bakinde is another newcomer that has been steadily improving with each outing. Bakinde netted eight points on 4-of-6 shooting against the Huskies. He finished with seven points and five boards against the Great Danes and has become a factor in the paint for Stony Brook. Just Keep Shooting Antwan Hardy tossed up 10 three-pointers against UConn, and finished with 11 points on the night. A Tough Start The last time the Seawolves opened the season with nine losses was in , when they stared 0-14 before snagging a win against Yeshiva. Stony Brook went 2-22 that season. My Captain, My Captain It was a homecoming of sorts for Stony Brook first-year head coach and former UConn Husky Steve Pikiell. Pikiell is Jim Calhoun s only two-time captain in his 20 years at UConn and he helped the Huskies to a Sweet 16 and Elite 8 appearance during the two years as a captain. He played in 106 career games and averaged 8.2 points per game. The three-time all-state selection of St. Paul s High School in Bristol, Conn. graduated in 1990 and was given the UConn Club Senior Athlete Award for his outstanding contributions to UConn Athletics. He is the first former UConn alum who played under Calhoun that has gone on to become a head coach at the Division I level. Pop Goes Mike Mike Popoko continues to assert himself as the leader of the Stony

4 Brook offense. The junior netted 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss to Albany on 7 of 8 shooting. Bobby Socks Senior Bobby Santiago netted 15 points against Colgate and grabbed six rebounds in the Seawolves first win of the season. Santiago turned in his best game of the season vs. Albany with a 15-point performance. He ignited Stony Brook s rally from a 12- point deficit behind three 3-pointers, the last of which gave Stony Brook its first lead of the second half at with just over eight minutes to play. The senior point guard also handed out a season high five assists. The Return of Mitchell Sophomore guard Mitchell Beauford wore a Stony Brook uniform for the first time in 380 days on December 23. He missed 24 games last season due to a broken foot and was academically ineligible for the first six games of the season. Beauford responded with a solid effort, totaling nine points and three steals while penetrating the Albany defense. Beauford was somewhat rusty from the field, going 4-for-13 from the floor. Tre Makes First Start Freshman Tre Cunningham made his first collegiate start against Albany, totaling five points and two rebounds. Oh Those Free Throws Stony Brook shot just 4 of 10 from the line against Albany and are shooting only 53 percent from the free throw line this season. A Rare Roster The Seawolves roster this seasons is one of the more rare in the country. Every player that has appeared in a game this season, has also earned at least one start for the Seawolves. Marques Cox, a freshman walk-on, has started four games at point guard. Senior walk-on Solomon Bamiro had just appeared in a total of six games with one start in the last two years for a total of 27 minutes. Bamiro has been in each game earning one start. Redshirt-junior Anthony Noble has been in each game earning one start. Noble, a transfer from Hofstra, had appeared in just seven games with one start for 19 minutes, before the 2005 campaign. Freshman Tre Cunningham has been a key reserve, appearing in all games with two starts. Freshman Andrew Goba has started every contest in his inaugural Seawolf campaign. Senior Hendrik Feist has been an offensive weapon this year, netting nearly double his career average. Freshman Stephane Bakinde has been a jumpstart for the offense off the bench, appearing in every game with one start. Oh What A Class Stony Brook has one of the top 40 recruting classes in the nation according to hoopscooponline.com, tops in the America East. The Seawolves have five players signed to National Letters of Intent, the largest class in school history. It s Getting Hot In Here Coach Steve Pikiell is not one to keep his suit coat on for long. In a key conference win over Vermont, Coach Pikiell had his jacket off before play even started. It must haven been a bit cooler in Hofstra Arena, with Coach Pikiell keeping his coat on over 2:30 into the game against the Pride, the longest this season. Game Time on Clock when Pikiell Takes Coat off (1st Half) New Hampshire 19:36 Dartmouth 19:29 Binghamton 19:44 Vermont 20:00 Colgate 18:53 Wagner 19:23 UConn 17:51 Albany 19:51 Hofstra 16:37 UMBC 19:43 St. John s 19:13 Columbia 19:11 Lehigh 18:46 Villanova 19:26 Help from the Bench Antwan Hardy and Tre Cunningham both had an impact off the bench against Hofstra. Hardy was 3-of-5 from behind the arc and finished with nine points and two assists, while Cunningham had a productive game, scoring six points, five rebounds, and three assists in just 18 minutes. Hop on Pop Mike Popoko led the way for the Seawolves against UMBC, putting them on his back at times. Popoko netted 17 points in his return back to his hometown of Baltimore, while snagging five boards and a season-best three blocks. Quite a Spark Stephane Bakinde came off the bench against UMBC to provide quite a spark for the Seawolves. Bakinde netted a career-best seven points in a Seawolves rally, including a dunk, and grabbed three boards. Bobby s Back Bobby Santiago returned to the form he has showed in season s past against UMBC. Santiago netted 10 points along with five assists, grabbing three rebounds, and collecting one steal. Hardy s Way Antwan Hardy has led the Seawolves in their last few contests. After an impressive outing against Columbia, Hardy netted 13 points, including 3-3 from downtown, versus the Red Storm of St. John s. Rattling the Rim Tre Cunningham had the Seawolves first dunk of the year, when he slammed home at fast break in the second half against the Red. Storm. Feist Is On Fire! Hendrik Feist has been the Seawolves offensive weapon this year. He matched a career-high 14 points against Columbia and netted 13 points vs. Lehigh. Even more impressive, Feist has been dangerous from behind the arc, shooting 44% (8-18). Not So Automatic Stony Brook missed four of six free throws in the final minute in the loss to Columbia. Bobby Santiago missed three and Antwan Hardy missed the back end of a one-and-one that lead to the game-winning shot. A Hardy Effort Antwan Hardy finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists against Columbia in his first start of the season. Bakinde on the Blocks Stephane Bakinde came off the bench against Columbia to have his best game as a Seawolf. Bakinde had three big blocks, along with a five points and five boards. Bakinde came off the bench against St. John s to snag a careerbest six boards in 20 minutes of action. Pop s Vision Is Mike Popoko scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed eight

5 rebounds in the loss to Lehigh. Dating back to last season, Popoko has scored at least 22 points in three of his last five games. He dropped 22 on New Hampshire in the season finale last year and then 22 on Northeastern in the America East quarterfinals. Feist Connects Hendrik Feist was 3-for-3 from three-point range against Lehigh and finished with 13 points. He also matched a career high with seven rebounds. From Way Downtown The Seawolves were good from long distance against Lehigh, drilling 10 of 22 attempts from behind the arc. SB shot over 40 percent from three-point range in its first two games. Boarding School The Seawolves crashed the boards in a big way against the Mountain Hawks, outrebounding them 42-35, 18 of them coming on the offensive glass. Not So Charitable The Seawolves have hit only 5 of 18 free throw attempts in the first two games. Tough Opponent Stony Brook opened the season against No. 5 Villanova, the highest ranked opponent that the Seawolves have faced since the season when SB took on No. 4 Auburn. On The Marques Freshman Marques Cox was one of the bright spots in the loss to Villanova. Earning his first collegiate start, he shot 3-for-7 from the field to finish with seven points. He also tied for the team lead in rebounds with four in only 17 minutes of action. Way To Goba Freshman Andrew Goba also showed promise in the season opener. The 6-9 center from South Africa notched four points and four rebounds in his first college game. Hello, My Name Is Tre Cunningham Freshman Tre Cunningham was arguably Stony Brook s best player against Villanova. The rookie shot 3-for-5 from the field, tying for the team lead in points (7) and rebounds (4) in only 14 minutes of action. Thirty Something Stony Brook scored 35 points in the loss to Villanova, their lowest game total since the season. The Seawolves dropped a decision to Franklin Pierce on January 28, Pikiell Takes Over Steve Pikiell was named the 10th men s basketball coach in the program s history in April of 2005, taking over for Nick Macarchuk who retired at the end of last season. Pikiell comes to SB after four seasons as the Associate head coach at George Washington where he helped breathe life back into the program and see it capture its first Atlantic-10 title last season. Pikiell is no stranger to success. The former two-time captain at UConn advanced to the Elite Eight and Sweet 16 in his final two years and college and brought that air of accomplishment to the bench. Prior to GW, Pikiell served as an assistant at Central Connecticut State and was part of the most successful seasons in Blue Devil history, winning the NEC crown in and advancing to the NCAA tournament. Road Warriors Stony Brook will play 17 of its 27 regular season games away from home this season. The 10 home games are the second lowest total in Division I history, surpassing the nine home games that SB had during the season. Stony Brook Picked Seventh The Seawolves were picked to finish seventh in the America East preseason poll. The highest that SB has ever been picked has been fifth. Albany was picked as the preseason favorite to capture the league crown. Rank Has Privilege The highest ranked team the Stony Brook has ever faced were the No. 4 Auburn Tigers during the season. Bobby At The Point Senior Bobby Santiago returns for his final season in a Stony Brook uniform after a junior season that saw him score double figures in 21 games and lead all Seawolves in scoring during conference action. We Like Mike Junior Mike Popoko finished the season on a tear, averaging 16.2 ppg. and 6.1 rpg. over the final five games of the season. During that stretch, he scored 22 points on two occasions, the last coming in a 22-point, 10-rebound effort in the season finale against Northeastern. Doing It The Hardy Way Sophomore Antwan Hardy returns as the team s leading scorer from one year ago. As a freshman, Hardy averaged a team-best 11.0 points per game and earned himself a spot on the America East All-Rookie team. His 307 points last season were the most by any freshman since the move to the Division I level. Who Will It Be This Year? Hardy s selection to the All-Rookie team marked the second consecutive year that a Stony Brook player has been chosen on the squad. In , Mike Popoko was an All-Rookie selection. Other New Faces Also beginning their first season on the bench are assistants Kelvin Jefferson, Jay Young and Guy Rancourt. What To Look For Look for walk-ons Marques Cox and Solomon Bamiro to earn playing time this year. Cox is a hard-nosed guard from Cardozo High school and Bamiro will earn some minutes against the Wildcats. Ready For The Big Time Stony Brook s men s basketball schedule is the toughest in school history, featuring four teams ranked in the Top 15 by Street & Smith Magazine. The Seawolves will take on the UConn, Boston College, Villanova and George Washington this season and also have visits to St. John s and Hofstra. A Long Way From Home Freshmen Stephane Bakinde and Andrew Goba both call Africa their home. Bakinde hails from Cameroon and Goba from South Africa. News And Notes Freshman Tre Cunningham is the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Bennie Cunningham this is the seventh straight year that Stony Brook will take on St. John s, the fifth time at Carnesecca Hall this year marks the first-ever meeting with George Washington. From Way Downtown Bobby Santiago and Hendrik Feist are moving up the charts for career three-pointers made. Santiago ranks ninth all-time with 85 trey to his credit while Feist checks in at 11 with 64. Did You Know? Head coach Steve Pikiell is the only two-time captain at UConn during Jim Calhoun s tenure with the Huskies. Former Villanova head coach Rollie Massimino began his coaching career at Stony Brook in He posted a record in two years, leading SB to the NCAA tournament in 1970.
