About the Seawolves Stony Brook tries to snap a two-game losing skid on Thursday, traveling to take on the UMBC Retrievers. The Seawolves are coming off home losses to Binghamton on Thursday and Albany on Sunday. Quick Shots Albany shot 54.5 percent against the Seawolves on Sunday... Stony Brook had held six of its last seven opponents under 35 percent shooting... Stony Brook accomplished that just once over its first eight games... Seawolves opponents had been shooting just 32.7 percent and averaging just 49.0 points per game against over the last seven games prior to Albany... opponents shot 41.6 percent and averaged 55.8 points per game over the Seawolves first eight games... SBU leads the America East in field goal percentage defense (.381)... the Seawolves held Vermont 15 points below their season scoring average last Monday... Vermont entered the game with top scoring offense in the America East... Vermont s 47 points was its second lowest scoring total of the season... this came after holding Youngstown State 16 points below its season scoring average... Stony Brook also leads the conference in scoring defense (52.9 points per game) and entered the week ranked 27th in the nation in that category... the win over Vermont snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Catamounts... it was also Stony Brook s first win in an conference opener since SBU s recent three-game winning streak (Morgan State, Youngstown State and Vermont) was its first three-game win streak since Albany s Ebone Henry had 20 points against the Seawolves on Sunday... she was just the fifth player this season to score 20 or more points against the Seawolves... despite being out-scored against Albany, Stony Brook has had one of the most productive benches in the America East... 3 Beth O boyle Head Coach First Season Gettysburg College 98 Stony Brook University Director of Athletics named Beth O Boyle as head women s basketball coach on April 7, O Boyle has 12 years of collegiate coaching experience and comes to Stony Brook following four years at Canisius College, where she served as the associate head women s basketball coach for the past two seasons. O Boyle helped Canisius to its best season in school history in as the Golden Griffins won 24 games, advanced to the MAAC Championship game and qualified for the WNIT for the first time in program history. The 24 wins were the most in the program s Division I history and the most by a Canisius women s basketball team in 25 years. Hired as an assistant coach at Canisius in 2007, O Boyle was elevated to associate head coach in November Responsible for all recruiting activities, as well the development of the Golden Griffin guards, O Boyle coached seven All-Conference players at Canisius, including 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Year Brittane Russell, 2009 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year Ellie Radke and 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year Jamie Ruttle. O Boyle has also shown a commitment to developing the total student-athlete. At Canisius, she monitored the academic progress of a Golden Griffins team that was recognized in the NCAA Top 25 for team grade point average. In total, Canisius has had 18 selections to the MAAC All-Academic team since O Boyle s arrival, including Marie Warner, who was also named a ESPN the Magazine third-team Academic All-American in O Boyle came to Canisius after serving as the head coach at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J., for three seasons. O Boyle led the Red Hawks to the ECAC Division III Metro Women s Basketball Championship in and was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year following the season. She compiled a record in her three seasons there, and the Red Hawks also produced their first All-American in 15 seasons under O Boyle s guidance. Prior to taking over at Montclair State, O Boyle spent four seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Rochester. During her first two seasons, Rochester won back-toback ECAC Upstate New York championships and in her last two seasons, the team made consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Final Four. In 2004, the team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for a three-week period according to the USA Today/ESPN/ WBCA Division III poll and the D3hoops.com poll. A 1998 graduate of Gettysburg College, O Boyle earned four letters with the basketball and soccer programs at Gettysburg and served as a two-time captain in each sport. O Boyle earned her master s degree from the University of Rochester s Warner School of Education in O Boyle is a native of Rockville, Md., and attended the Academy of the Holy Cross High School in Kensington, Md. Stony Brook University s women s basketball team dropped its second straight game, falling to the Albany Great Danes, 57-32, in an America East conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. Ebony Henry led Albany with 20 points and six rebounds as the the Great Danes shot 54.5 percent from the field. Senior Destiny Jacobs led SBU with nine points. Stony Brook trailed by seven six minutes into the second half but Albany held the Seawolves scoreless over the next eight minutes, scoring 20 straight points to put the game away. UMBC UMBC 75, Maine 55 Jan. 7, Orono, Maine Nine different Retrievers scored, led by a game-high 23 points from senior Erin Brown as the UMBC women s basketball team defeated Maine, 75-55, Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena. The Retrievers, who trailed for only 46 seconds in the game against the Black Bears, picked up their fourth road win of the season. Last Meeting UMBC 74, Stony Brook 65 March 4, Hartford, Conn. Kirsten Jeter led three Seawolves in double-figures with 17 points but Michelle Kurowski had 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead the No. 1 UMBC Retrievers to a victory over the No. 8 Stony Brook University women s basketball team in an America East quarterfinal game at Chase Arena. UMBC had just nine made field goals in the second half but went 23-for-31 from the line in the period. UMBC is led by senior all-conference selections Erin Brown and Michelle Kurowski. Brown leads the America East in scoring at 15.7 points per game while Kurowski ranks 10th (11.7 ppg). Freshman point guard Lauren Chase is averaging a conference-best 3.9 assists per contest. The teams have three common opponents this season. Both teams beat Morgan State and lost to Albany. Klupenger Finding the Scoring Touch Junior Dani Klupenger scored a career-high 18 points in the Seawolves win over Vermont last MonsY. She has already scored in double-figures six times this season after scoring in double-figures just twice over her first two years at Stony Brook. She has 101 points this season after scoring a combined 116 points in her first two seasons. Klupenger averaged 13.0 points per game and shot 57.9 percent (10-for-18) from three during the winning streak. Stony Brook Inks Three To NLIs Head coach Beth O Boyle announced on Nov. 16 that forward Brittany Snow (Voorhees, N.J./Seneca), guard Kim Hanlon (White Plains, N.Y.) and forward Alyssa Coiro (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) had signed national letters of intent to play for the Seawolves beginning in the fall of A 6-0 forward, Snow averaged 17.3 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior at Seneca High School and is rated as the No. 47 player in New Jersey by MaxPreps.com. Snow was named to the All-South Jersey second team by the Philadelphia Inquirer and was a Burlington Country Times second team All-Area selection. Hanlon comes to Stony Brook from White Plains High School where she was a two-time all-league performer. A 5-8 guard, she was recently selected to play in the prestigious Metro Classic and is a threetime scholar athlete award winner. A 6-1 forward, Coiro helped Rutgers Prep to a county and state championship last season and earned the school s 2011 Pegeen O Connell Sportsmanship award. A three-time member of the honor roll, Coiro is a team captain in basketball and volleyball and also led Rutgers Prep to the 2011 state championship in volleyball.
