4 SYLVIA FOWLES MAKES HISTORY FOWLES DUNKS! With 9:29 to play in the first half against Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 21, LSU All- American center Sylvia Fowles stole the ball at the top of the key, drove the length of the court and threw down a one-handed dunk to the delight of the Maravich Center crowd. Fowles became only sixth player in women's college basketball history to dunk in a game. Fowles joins Georganne Wells of West Virginia, the first woman to dunk in an NCAA game in December 1984, North Carolina's Charlotte Smith, Houston's Sancho Lyttle and Tennessee's Michelle Snow and Candace Parker as women to dunk in a women's NCAA game. FOWLES ON HER DUNK "When I saw that I had the steal, I saw someone coming up behind me and I knew I had to get my feet right then. I stutter stepped went up and it just happened. It felt good to hear the crowd go wild, but it felt especially good to hear my teammates. I know (my teammates) have been waiting for this for a long time. I saw Seimone (Augustus) and Temeka (Johnson) earlier in the stands and it's also something I owed them. I promised them that. Just to please them and my teammates makes me happy." VAN CHANCELLOR ON THE DUNK "All I've ever been asked is when will Big Syl dunk. Tonight, I quit having to answer that question. What I liked about it was that it was not a cheap dunk. It was not everyone clear out the way. She stole the ball and next she dunked it." SYL S DUNK IN TOP 10 PLAYS OF THE DAY Sylvia Fowles dunk against UL-Lafayette was the No. 4 play of the day on ESPN s Top 10 Plays of the Day on SportsCenter. ESPN also showed the dunk during their live coverage of the Duke vs. Marquette men s game on Nov

It was the 10th time a crowd of over 10,000 filled the PMAC for a women s game. GET TO 75 AND WIN The Lady Tigers have won 87 of the last 88 games when they score at least 75 points. Florida ended a streak of 71 straight on Feb. 16, 2006 with a overtime win over LSU. SIGNING CLASS AMONG THE BEST LSU s early signing class in among the nation s best. The Lady Tigers signed three fivestar players and three four-star players. The class is ranked third by hoopgirlz.com (see the list of early signee below). NOTICE SOMETHING DIFFERENT? If you noticed something different about associate head coach Bob Starkey, you are correct. Starkey, in his 19th season at LSU and his 10th season with the Lady Tigers, shaved his head bald to support his wife Sherie. Sherie was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer and is doing well with her treatments. Starkey and LSU, along with the WBCA, want to raise awareness of breast cancer with the Think Pink campaign. SHARING THE ROCK LSU s 32 assists (on 34 made baskets) in the victory at Arkansas on Jan. 10 tied for the second most assists in a single game in the program s history. The Lady Tigers 32 tied with performances against St. John s on Nov. 17, 1998 and against Tulane on Dec. 29, The school record of 38 was set against UNC Ashville on Nov. 23, LADY TIGERS EARLY SIGNEES Player Ht. 19 VAN CHANCELLOR HEAD COACH 13-3 First season th season in college THE CHANCELLOR FILE Van Chancellor, a veteran head coach of 29 years at both the collegiate and professional levels, brings to LSU an impeccable resume, one that includes leading the United States to a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics Games, four WNBA titles with the Houston Comets and 14 NCAA Tournament appearances at Ole Miss. "It's a rare occasion that an athletic director has the opportunity to hire a person with the credentials that Van Chancellor brings to our women's basketball program," Bertman said. "Van has experienced tremendous success at all levels of women's basketball. "He developed Ole Miss into a powerhouse in the SEC, won WNBA titles with the Houston Comets and led our national team to a gold medal in the Olympics. He knows how to win championships and that's what we have come to expect at LSU.
