LSU won back-to-back SEC games for the first time this season with a blowout of Mississippi State on Sunday in Starkville. Plaisance has scored in double-figures in every game except the season-opener. She leads the league in 20-point games (9). She ranks 14th nationally in blocks per game with an SEC-best 2.8. She has 71 total blocks on the season, which is the highest tally by an LSU player since Sylvia Fowles had 78 in It s also eighth in LSU single-season history. Caldwell revived the LSU program from her opening press conference. A summer full of speaking engagements, building the fan base and connecting with her players led to a season where attendance increased by an average of over 1,500 fans from the previous season. LSU also signed a top-20 recruiting class as ranked by ESPN HoopGurlz. com. After missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years a season prior to her arrival, Caldwell spearheaded the squad to the 2012 NCAA Tournament second round and its first appearance in the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game since The Lady Tigers reached 23 wins their highest total since the 2008 Final Four season won 10 conference games for the first time since 2009 and claimed wins over five ranked teams during the season. Well respected in coaching circles, Caldwell was then selected by the USA Women s Basketball Committee to serve as an assistant coach for the USA U18 National Team in the summer of She became the first coach in LSU history to serve on a USA U18 team staff since the squad s inception in Caldwell and the Americans celebrated on the international stage as the USA U18 team cruised to a 5-0 record and beat Brazil to win the 2012 FIBA Americas Championship gold medal in Puerto Rico. Caldwell has been a part of a championship and winning pedigree at every level of her career. She played, coached and studied under one of the game s greatest WHAT THEY ARE SAYING... NIKKI CALDWELL HEAD COACHING RECORD figures, the legendary Pat Summitt at Tennessee and she assisted Women s Basketball Hall of Famer Debbie Ryan at Virginia. Widely recognized as one of the nation s top assistant coaches during stints at Tennessee and Virginia, Caldwell took over at UCLA in In three years with the Bruins, she turned around a UCLA program that had won only one NCAA Tournament game in the nine years prior to her arrival. Caldwell led the Bruins to a (.735) overall mark, reached the NCAA Tournament twice and finished second in the Pac-10 Conference in both 2010 and She was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2010 after going 25-9 overall and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Caldwell broke into the head coaching ranks after serving as an assistant on the staff of legendary women s coach Pat Summitt at Tennessee from During that time, she helped the Lady Vols capture a pair of NCAA titles in 2007 and 2008 and reach the Final Four a total of five times. The Lady Vols compiled an impressive mark and won three Southeastern Conference regular season titles during her six years as an assistant coach. Off the court, Caldwell is a passionate crusader for breast cancer awareness. She and Tennessee head coach Holly Warlick have founded the non-profit organization, Champions for a Cause. Since 2007, they have raised over $300,000 through Cruisin for a Cause, a long-haul motorcycle adventure to raise dollars and awareness for a cure for breast cancer. Caldwell has been prominent in the Baton Rouge community since her arrival, making appearances at the Baton Rouge Food Bank and schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish system. I am absolutely thrilled for Nikki. LSU is committed to its women s basketball program both financially and with the resources they have in place to compete amongst the best teams in the nation. The Southeastern Conference will become much stronger with Nikki joining the league. Her accomplishments in the three short seasons she was at UCLA is indicative of more of what will come from Nikki and her staff at LSU. - Pat Summitt, former Tennessee head coach and Hall of Famer Nikki Caldwell is a superstar in our profession. She is the quintessential players coach who understands that each player is unique and must be motivated differently to get their maximum effort every night. Nikki has a style and grace that garners immediate attention. She has a great moral compass for the way things ought to be in life. LSU may have hired a coach but they acquired a tremendous person who will achieve greatness beyond the athletic realm. - Debbie Ryan, Former Virginia head coach and Hall of Famer LSU should get the hire of the year award in hiring Nikki Caldwell. When you look at what she did at UCLA in a short amount of time, Nikki is a winner. She works hard. She knows how to relate to people and she is a constant student of the game. There is more than one way to do things and she is going to find the right way that works with the players she has. - Carolyn Peck, ESPN analyst YEAR TEAM RECORD CONF. Junior guard Jeanne Kenney, a Baton Rouge native, ranks 27th in the nation in assist-toturnover ratio (2.1, 110 assists, 53 turnovers). Kenney injured her left knee in a collision at the 16:49 mark of the second half of the Texas A&M game on Feb. 4. She did not return. Three days later, she came off the bench with an inspiring effort against Tennessee, helping LSU rally from a deficit. She scored four points, had five rebounds and five assists and took two huge charges on the defensive end. She followed that up with 11 points and five assists in the win over No. 9 Georgia on Feb. 10. Kenney s 110 assists this season are the most by an LSU player since Erica White had 156 during the Final Four season. LSU leads the SEC in blocks per game with 5.2, which ranks 20th nationally. The Lady Tigers blocked nine shots in the win over Mississippi State on Sunday highlighted by a career-best five from Shanece McKinney. The nine blocks was LSU s highest total in SEC play. Last Time Out: LSU 63, Mississippi State 41 Feb. 17 in Starkville Danielle Ballard stole the show, scoring a game-high 19 points with seven rebounds and four steals as the LSU women s basketball team turned in its best defensive effort of the season in a blowout of Mississippi State on Sunday in Humphrey Coliseum. Ballard, playing in front of dozens of family members who made the drive from Memphis, finished 7-of-9 from the floor and produced her highest scoring output since putting in 24 points in the SEC opener on Jan. 3. Adrienne Webb scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half made 7-of-7 from the free throw line for LSU, which finished an efficient 17-of-21 from the line. Theresa Plaisance added 14 points, a career-high three three-pointers, three blocks and two steals. Jeanne Kenney dished out six assists. LSU set the tone with its physical defensive play inside, none bigger than the inspired play of Shanece McKinney. McKinney, making her fourth straight start, scored five points and blocked a career-high five shots. She took the SEC s top rebounder and Mississippi State s top scorer, Martha Alwal, away from her inside game. Alwal was held scoreless for the second time this SEC season, and she managed only one rebound. The Lady Tigers out-rebounded their fourth consecutive opponent and held MSU to 24.6 percent shooting for the game, the lowest by an opponent against LSU this season. The Lady Bulldogs shot 18.8 percent in the second half to LSU s 52.6 percent. Curing Road Woes LSU had dropped five consecutive road games prior a Jan. 31 win at Auburn. The Lady Tigers returned to the road last Sunday and claimed back-to-back SEC wins for the first time this season, doing so in dominating fashion by a score of LSU is now 3-7 on the road overall and 2-4 in SEC play. The key to success has been the Lady Tigers defense on the road. Opponents have failed to reach 60 points in LSU s last two road games, and they both shot below 37 percent. Entering Thursday s game at Missouri, LSU is seeking to claim three straight SEC road wins for the first time since the Final Four season when the Lady Tigers went a perfect 7-0. Defense Rises To The Challenge LSU s defense has rose to the occasion the last three games, holding three straight opponents below their scoring averages and out-rebounding five straight opponents. After surrendering 74 points to Texas A&M, LSU held Tennessee, the SEC s leading scoring offense, to 64 points in a loss on Feb. 7. That was 17 points below the Lady Vols season average. Three days later, LSU held No. 9 Georgia to 54 points and 30.1 percent shooting. That represented The Lady Bulldogs second-lowest field goal shooting percentage of the season. Last Sunday, LSU went on the road and held Mississippi State to 41 points, representing the lowest point total by an opponent this season. In its last three games, LSU has held opponents to a combined 33.9 percent shooting and 53.0 points per game. It s also the first time this season that LSU has held two straight SEC opponents below 55 points. Opponent PPG Points vs. LSU Difference Tennessee Georgia Mississippi St Opponent LSU Margin at Auburn Texas A&M Tennessee at Mississippi State LSU Concludes Tough, Unprecedented Stretch Against Ranked Teams For the first time in school history, LSU hosted three straight ranked SEC teams in a span of seven days. LSU lost back-to-back games to No. 14 Texas A&M (74-57) on Feb. 4 and No. 12 Tennessee (64-62) on Feb. 7 before responding with an upset of No. 9 Georgia (62-54) last Sunday. Bashaara Gaves hit a shot with 0.8 seconds left and Adrienne Webb s potential game-winning three bounced off the rim as Tennessee won. However, LSU responded by shutting down Georgia offensively. It marked the first time since 2003 that LSU played three straight ranked teams in the regular season. That year, the Lady Tigers beat No. 18 Vanderbilt and Georgia at home before going on the road to defeat No. 16 South Carolina and No. 12 Mississippi State. LSU owns a 2-4 record against ranked teams this season with a win over then No. 12 West Virginia on Nov. 23. LSU will host a fourth consecutive ranked SEC team when No. 7 Kentucky comes to Baton Rouge on Feb. 24. FIVE NCAA FINAL FOURS 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008

Recent LSU Scoring Offenses Season Points Per Game Getting To The Free Throw Line Dating back to last year s SEC Tournament run, LSU has done a tremendous job of getting to the free throw line. Since the 2012 SEC Tournament semifinal game against Kentucky where the Lady Tigers set a school record of 34 makes, LSU has attempted at least 20 free throws in 18 of its last 29 contests, including 16 of 25 games this season (5 of 12 SEC games). LSU tied the school record of 34 makes on Dec. 21, by burying 34-of-47 from the line in a Dec. 21 comeback win over McNeese State. The top two highest made free throw games have now occured in the Nikki Caldwell era. The 47 attempts against McNeese ranked FIVE NCAA FINAL FOURS 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 second in LSU single-game annals and the most since the Lady Tigers attempted 50 on Feb. 5, 1996 against UL-Lafayette. Six times this year, the Lady Tigers have accounted for at least 20 free throw makes and LSU is 5-1 in those contests -- Wichita State (W), Hampton (L), West Virginia (W), McNeese State (L), Ole Miss (W). LSU has made (381) and attempted (553) more free throws than any team in the SEC this season. The percentage of 68.9 overall ranks sixth the conference. Tennessee (355) is the next closest to LSU in made free throws. LSU is one of only two teams in the SEC this season to make at least 30 free throws in a game, doing so in the record-tying 34 makes against McNeese State on Dec. 21. Theresa Plaisance has made (108) and attempted (147) more free throws than any player in the SEC this season. Plaisance s 73.5 percent from the line ranks 10th in the SEC. Plaisance is one of only two players in the SEC this season to make at least 100 free throws. It marks the second straight year that LSU has produced the SEC s leader in free throw makes and attempts as LaSondra Barrett did so last year in Nikki Caldwell s first season. Theresa Plaisance recorded the third-most made free throws (13) and third-most free throw attempts (19) in LSU single-game history against McNeese State on Dec. 21. Both registered as the highest such marks by an SEC player in any game this season. When LSU makes or attempts more free throws than its opponent this season, the Lady Tigers own a 14-4 record and a 6-2 mark in SEC play. The only two losses under that scenario were vs. Texas A&M and Tennessee. LSU responded with 17-of-23 makes in an upset of No. 9 Georgia on Feb. 10, including 9-of-12 in the final two minutes to put the game away. The Lady Tigers were 17-of-21 at Mississippi State. In its last two games, LSU is combined 34-of-44 at the line for 77.3 percent.

6 NOTEBOOK Danielle Ballard, One of the Nation s Top Freshmen Freshman guard Danielle Ballard arrived at LSU with an impressive set of credentials as a top 25 high school player. Through 25 games, she has lived up to the billing as the Memphis native has four times been named SEC Freshman of the Week, doing so on Nov. 26, Dec. 24, Jan. 7 and most recently on Monday, Feb. 18. Ballard is the first freshman since LaSondra Barrett ( ) to receive four SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Ballard is tied with Tennessee s Bashaara Graves for the most SEC Freshman of the Week awards this season. Ballard is second among all SEC freshmen in scoring with 12.6 points per game, which also ranks 15th overall in the conference. She is also second among all freshmen in rebounding with 6.4 boards per game. Ballard is already one of the most prolific perimeter defenders in school history, leading the SEC in steals per game with 3.1. She has already accumulated 78 steals, which is the most by an LSU player in a season since eight years ago when Scholanda Dorrell had 78 during the Final Four season. The 3.1 steal per game average leads all freshmen in LSU history, surpassing the mark of great Joyce Walker ( ) with 2.9. Ballard is 21st nationally in steals. Ballard carried LSU to its highest win over a non-conference ranked opponent since 2010 with a career-best 25 points in a win over No. 12 West Virginia in the FIU Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 25. The 25 points were the most by an LSU true freshman in a game since LaSondra Barrett had 27 at Arkansas on Jan. 8, Ballard scored the final 10 points of the first half for LSU against West Virginia. She earned a spot on the FIU Classic all-tournament team after averaging 19.0 points in LSU s two games as the Lady Tigers won the tournament. She collected a clutch steal in the final minutes of the FIU game to help preserve the victory. On Dec. 19, Ballard tied Joyce Walker s LSU freshmen record with seven steals to go along with a game-high 21 points against Grambling. Ballard s steals tied for fifth overall in LSU single-game annals. Walker collected seven steals against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 12, 1981 during her freshman campaign. Ballard produced back-to-back 21-point games against Grambling and McNeese State, representing the first time an LSU freshman had done that since SEC Freshman of the Year Seimone Augustus did it in the 2003 SEC Tournament. Augustus had 22 points against Arkansas in the SEC quarterfinals on March 6, 2003 and followed that up with 20 points against Vanderbilt in the SEC semifinals on March 7, In SEC games, Ballard also leads the league in steals (35 total). Ballard is tied for the team lead in rebounds per game in SEC play with 7.3, which also ranks ninth in the league. Ballard grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds -- eight on the offensive glass -- in the upset win of No. 9 Georgia on Feb. 10. The 15 rebounds tied for the most by an LSU player in a game this season. It was the highest total by an LSU player in an SEC game this season and the most in an SEC game since Sylvia Fowles had 15 against Georgia on Feb. 10, It was also the highest rebound total by an LSU freshman since Fowles had 17 against No. 5 Tennessee on Feb. 10, In SEC play, Ballard is third in the conference in offensive rebounds per game with 3.3. She is the only freshman in the SEC in the top four of that category. 11 times this season, Ballard has recorded at least four steals in a game, including six out of her last eight SEC games. She had four at Auburn on Jan. 31, none bigger than her steal with 0:18 to play that preserved the victory. On Feb. 4, she collected four more that pulled LSU within striking distance against Texas A&M. She also contributed 12 points, including two highlight reel plays. She did it again on Feb. 7 against Tennessee with four more steals. The Memphis native heads into the Missouri contest third in LSU all-time freshman steals with 78, eight shy of tying the school freshman record. She ranks second nationally among all freshmen in steals. She is also tied for 10th in LSU single-season steals. SEC Freshmen Scoring (Points Per Game) 1. She is also seventh in the conference in rebounding and sixth in the league in field goal percentage (46.5). Plaisance is the only player in the SEC to rank in the top 10 of all five of these categories: scoring, rebounding, blocks, field goal percentage and free throw percentage. She is also the only player in the SEC to lead the league in multiple major categories: scoring, blocks. Plaisance has produced an SEC-leading nine 20-plus point games this season, representing the most by an LSU player since Allison Hightower had 11 during the entire season. Her most recent one came against Tennessee on Feb. 7. The New Orleans native owns four double-doubles this season: at Hampton (18 points, 11 rebounds); vs. Tulane (24 pts, 11 reb.); vs. McNeese State (21 pts, 14 reb.); vs. New Orleans (25 pts, 11 reb.). The four double-doubles are the most by an LSU player in a season since LaSondra Barrett had eight last season. Plaisance grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end, in the season-opening win against Wichita State. The 15 rebounds were the most by an LSU player since Kristen Morris had 16 against Green Bay in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament on March 22, It was the first time an LSU player had double-digit offensive rebounds since Sylvia Fowles collected 10 vs. Auburn on Jan. 28, Against NC State on Dec. 2, Plaisance notched a career-best 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting. 7 NOTEBOOK Plaisance nearly had a triple-double against Tulane on Dec. 9. She scored 24 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked a career-high eight shots. The eight blocks tied for the second-most in school history and the most by an LSU player since Dee Dee Franklin had eight blocks against Purdue on March 19, The eight were also one shy of the school record set by Cheri Graham against Nicholls State on Dec. 2, Plaisance owns the SEC s two highest block performances this season with eight in that Tulane game and seven at Florida International on Nov. 25. She swatted five shots in the Tennessee game on Feb. 7, representing her highest career total in an SEC contest. For the season, she has 71 total blocks, which ranks 14th nationally. The 71 blocks are already the most by an LSU player in a season since Sylvia Fowles had 78 during the season. It s also eighth in LSU single-season annals. Plaisance s 2.8 block per game total is on pace for the highest bpg tally by an LSU player since a school record 3.9 by Heidi Olsen during the season. Plaisance had the highest output of her career in an SEC game with 26 points in a comeback win over Vanderbilt on Jan. 20. She scored 21 points in the second half. During a 13-0 run that turn the game around, she had seven points. She also scored nine straight points for LSU at one point. Plaisance tied a career high with 11 field goals in the game. It represented the most field goals by an LSU player in an SEC game since Allison Hightower converted 11 at Auburn on Feb. 14, Plaisance has scored in double-figures in 24 consecutive games (every game except the season-opener). It is the longest stretch by an LSU player since Sylvia Fowles did it in 26 straight games during her junior season from Nov March The last time LSU had a player finish as the SEC s scoring champion was Seimone Augustus when she finished the season with 22.7 points per game. Plaisance s scoring average is the highest by an LSU player since Allison Hightower s 18.2 points per game as a senior in In SEC play, Plaisance is putting up 16.5 points per contest, which ranks third in the league. She has also swatted a league-leading 29 shots (2.4 bpg) in SEC games. LSU Single-Season Blocks Name, Year G Points 1. Webb, a native of Madison, Ala., is a Coaches Preseason All-SEC Second-Team selection. She is currently second on the team in scoring and ninth in the SEC with 13.9 points per game. In SEC play, Webb is 12th in the league with 14.2 ppg. Webb has produced five 20-plus point performances in her career and three this season, none bigger than her career-high 28 points in a blowout win over Mississippi State on Jan. 13. Webb fired in 9-of-14 from the floor -- one field goal shy of a career high -- while burying a season-best 4-of-6 from three-point land. She also tied a career-high with a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Webb credited her 28-point outing to getting up over 400 shots in the two previous practices leading up to the Mississippi State game. The 28 points tied for the highest scoring output by an LSU player this season and the highest in SEC play since Allison Hightower had 29 points at Auburn on Feb. 14, The 28-point performance was also the secondhighest by any player in the SEC in a league game this season. At Arkansas on Jan. 10, Webb was held scoreless for the first time since her freshman year. Since that game, she has responded by posting double-figure points in eight of the last nine games. She has combined for 16-of-38 threes in the last nine games. She has reached double-figures in 10 of LSU s 12 SEC games. Webb has produced 70 double-figure scoring games for her career, including 21 of the 24 games she has played in this season. Webb missed the East Tennessee State game on Dec. 13 after suffering a head injury against Tulane a game prior on Dec. 9. With her two threes at Mississippi State on Feb. 17, Webb surpassed Katrina Hibbert for fifth place in LSU career made threes with 154. She s also fifth in threes attempted with 457. Webb became the 30th player in LSU history to eclipse 1,000 points in a career with 19 in the win over Grambling on Dec. 19. She became the first LSU player to do so since LaSondra Barrett on Jan. 27, 2011 against Arkansas. Webb has recorded 1,221 career points, which is currently tied for 20th place in school history. Her leadership on the floor has been a big reason why the Lady Tigers offense is the team s best in years. Kenney has dished out a team-high 110 assists for a 4.6 assist per game average, which ranks seventh in the SEC. The Baton Rouge native is also fourth in the league in assist/ turnover ratio (2.1, 110 assists, 53 turnovers). In SEC play, Kenney s numbers improve 4.9 assists per game, which is sixth in the SEC. Kenney is second in the SEC in assist to turnover ratio in SEC games with a 2.2 ratio. She has accounted for 54 assists and only 23 turnovers in LSU s 12 SEC games. 13 times this season, Kenney has accounted for at least five assists in a game, including eight times in SEC play. She heads into the Missouri game as LSU s active leader in career assists with 230. Kenney also has a knack for taking charges on the defensive end. She leads LSU in that category too. She injured her left knee at the 16:49 mark in the second half of a Feb. 4 game against Texas A&M and did not return. She did not start against Tennessee on Feb. 7, but turned in a courageous effort off the bench accounting for five assists, five rebounds, two steals and two charges that changed the momentum of the game. Kenney returned to the starting linup on Feb. 10 against Georgia and responded with 11 points -- her highest scoring output since Nov to go along with another five-assist game. Kenney s 110 assists this season are the highest total by an LSU player since Erica White recorded 156 during the Final Four season.
