The Lady Tigers earned the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament by winning the title. The perfect run in through the conference is the second for LSU and the second in four seasons. The Lady Tigers also went 14-0 in the SEC to win the 2005 crown. LSU also won the league title in 2006 with a 13-1 record. CAPPING THE SEASON LSU enters the NCAA Tournament second-round with a 28-5 overall record after claiming the Southeastern Conference regular season title with a 14-0 mark. The Lady Tigers reached the championship game of the SEC Tournament, but fell to Tennessee. The season began with a runner-up finish to Maryland in the Preseason WNIT and after a late December loss at Middle Tennessee, LSU rattled off 14 straight wins before falling to Connecticut on Feb. 25. Mary milestones were reached in starting with head coach Van Chancellor coaching in his 600th collegiate game on Nov. 29 at Houston. The Lady Tigers collected the program s 700th win with a victory over Kentucky on Jan. 27. Quianna Chaney scored her 1,000 career point on Jan. 3 and Sylvia Fowles became the fifth player at LSU to reach the 2,000 point plateau on Feb 14th. Fowles later became the SEC s career double doubles leader (Feb. 10) and LSU s career leader in rebounds (March 2). Fowles cleaned up when the SEC s post season honors were announced. The senior was named the Player and Defensive Player of the Year and earned first-team All-SEC and all-defensive accolades. Chaney joined Fowles with first-team All-SEC honors and Erica White was a second-team selection. Chancellor was named the SEC Coach of the Year, while Allison Hightower was named the 6th Woman of the Year. NOTE WORTHY... Sylvia Fowles and Van Chancellor received SEC s top honors (page 9). 4 SYLVIA FOWLES MAKES HISTORY FOWLES DUNKS! With 9:29 to play in the first half against Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 21, LSU All- American center Sylvia Fowles stole the ball at the top of the key, drove the length of the court and threw down a one-handed dunk to the delight of the Maravich Center crowd. Fowles became only sixth player in women's college basketball history to dunk in a game. Fowles joins Georganne Wells of West Virginia, the first woman to dunk in an NCAA game in December 1984, North Carolina's Charlotte Smith, Houston's Sancho Lyttle and Tennessee's Michelle Snow and Candace Parker as women to dunk in a women's NCAA game. FOWLES ON HER DUNK "When I saw that I had the steal, I saw someone coming up behind me and I knew I had to get my feet right then. I stutter stepped went up and it just happened. It felt good to hear the crowd go wild, but it felt especially good to hear my teammates. I know (my teammates) have been waiting for this for a long time. I saw Seimone (Augustus) and Temeka (Johnson) earlier in the stands and it's also something I owed them. I promised them that. Just to please them and my teammates makes me happy." Sylvia Fowles became LSU s all-time leader in rebounds when she collected 12 at Mississippi State on March 2 to vault past Julie Gross. Fowles entered the game needing five rebounds to get the record. The senior enters the NCAA Tournament second-round game with 1,514 boards and is also just 12 rebounds away from breaking the SEC s career mark. FOWLES IN THE SEC BOOKS Sylvia Fowles enters the NCAA Tournament second-round game ranked second in career rebounds in SEC history with 1,514, first in career double doubles with 82 and fifth in career blocked shots with 304. GOT TWO GRAND Sylvia Fowles became just the fifth player in LSU history to reach the 2,000 career points milestone when she scored her 17th and final point at Tennessee on Feb. 14. Fowles is the only player in school history with at least 2,000 points, 1,500 rebounds and 300 blocked shots. FOWLES GET FT MARK Sylvia Fowles became the all-time leader in free throws made at LSU with her six against Kentucky on Feb. 21. The senior passed Cornelia Gayden during the game and now has 486 made free throws in her career. SCORING A SCORE Sylvia Fowles has reached the 20-plus point plateau 37 times in her career, including 10 times this season. The Miami, Fla., native has also scored in double figures in 120 of her 140 career games. GRABBING THE BOARDS Sylvia Fowles has pulled down at least 10 rebounds in 86 games in her career. She grabbed a career-best 22 boards in LSU s victory over No. 22 Vanderbilt on Jan. 26, 2006 and collected 20 against Auburn on Jan. 28, 2007, 20 at South Carolina on Feb. 4, 2007, 20 at Arkansas on Feb. 15 and 20 against Tennessee on March 3. The Baton Rouge native has made 197 three pointers in her career and has taken 565 long range shots. CHANEY HAVING SPECIAL SEASON Senior guard Quianna Chaney opened the season in grand fashion by scoring a then career-high 25 points in the victory over Samford on Nov. 9. She then bested that career-high with 27 points in a victory at Florida State on Jan. 3, including scoring the first 14 points of the game. Chaney has scored at least 20 points in a game six times this season and 10 times in her career. The Baton Rouge native has posted double figures in 27 games this season and 66 games over her career. CHANEY GETS A GRAND Senior guard Quianna Chaney became the 27th player in LSU history to reach the 1,000 point milestone when she scored 27 points in the victory at Florida State on Jan. 3. The Baton Rouge native entered the Florida State game with 987 career points. She now sits in 16th with 1,303 points. WHITE DISHES OUT Erica White, LSU s senior point guard, dished out 12 assists in the victory at Arkansas on Jan. 10, the most by a Lady Tigers player since she recorded 10 assists against Ole Miss on March 3, The 12 assists also marked the fifth time White has collected at least 10 assists in a game. Fowles played 22 minutes, scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots in the victory. The Miami, Fla., native had arthroscopic surgery to repair a partially torn lateral meniscus in her right knee on Dec. 21. Fowles injured her knee during the second half of LSU's victory over Miami on Dec. 19 in Cancun. FOWLES FIRST-HALF Senior center Sylvia Fowles 21 first-half points against Michigan State on Nov. 15 were the most by a Lady Tigers player in one half since Seimone Augustus poured in 21 points in the second half in a win at Texas Tech on Nov. 13, Fowles finished the game against the Spartans with 25 points. THOMAS HONORED BY THE NCAA Ashley Thomas, a senior forward on the LSU women's basketball team, has been named one of the recipients of the Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarships for Careers in Athletics given annually by the NCAA. CHANCELLOR REACHES MILESTONE When LSU took the floor Nov. 29 at Houston, it was the 600th college game coached by Van Chancellor. The Hall of Famer coached against 131 different opponents in his 600 games. The win over Houston was his 444th. CHANCELLOR AGAINST HIS ALMA MATER Hall of Fame Van Chancellor, LSU s first-year head coach, faced his alma mater (Mississippi State) for the 39th time on Jan. 20 and the 40th time on March 2. After LSU s victories, Chancellor owns an amazing 39-1 record against the Lady Bulldogs, including 35 straight wins. BIG VICTORY LSU defeated Mississippi State, 84-31, on Jan. 20 to break the mark for largest margin of victory by the Lady Tigers over an SEC opponent. LSU broke the previous mark of 25 set in a victory over Kentucky in TOP SEC HONORS More history was made by the LSU women's basketball team when Sylvia Fowles and Van Chancellor received the Southeastern Conference's top honors from both the coaches and the Associated Press. Fowles was named the Player of the Year and Chancellor was tabbed as the Coach of the Year, marking the fifth time in SEC history the Player and Coach of the Year came from the same school. Fowles, a senior center for the Lady Tigers, was also named the Defensive Player of the Year by the coaches and earned unanimous first-team All-SEC honors from both. Quianna Chaney joined Fowles on the first-team, while Erica White was a second-team All-SEC selection. Sophomore Allison Hightower received the Sixth-Woman of the Year award by the coaches. FOWLES NAMED NAISMITH FINALIST Sylvia Fowles was named one of four finalists for the 2008 Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T. Fowles joins Courtney Paris of Oklahoma, Candace Parker of Tennessee and Candice Wiggins of Stanford to make up the final ballot for the most prestigious national award in college basketball. The Naismith Women's College Player of the Year winner will be announced at the Women's Basketball Coaches Association convention in Tampa, Fla., on Monday, April 7. FOWLES ON FINAL BALLOT FOR WOODEN Sylvia Fowles was named one of 17 women's college basketball players to the final 2008 Women's John R. WHITE NAMED TO LIEBERMAN LIST Senior Erica White has been named as one of nine final nominees for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year award. The criterion for the award is the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer, Nancy Lieberman during her career. Sportswriters from across the country have determined this final nominee list. They will select three finalists from this list and one winner at the beginning of April The announcement of the three finalists and one winner will be made during the Final Four Weekend (April 6-8, 2008). LEADING THE WAY IN THE SEC LSU trailed for just 4:04 in its first nine SEC games this season. The Lady Tigers did not trail in the first five conference games and the seventh game at Florida, but South Carolina held a two first half leads on LSU for a total on 60 seconds, Alabama led twice for a total of 39 seconds and Georgia led once for 2:25 in the first half. LEADING THE WAY LSU went 283 minutes and four second straight without trailing before South Carolina grabbed a 6-4 lead over the Lady Tigers in the first half of the Jan. 31st game. The streak started after New Orleans posted a 2-0 lead on LSU just 20 seconds into the game on Dec. 30 and spanned six more game after that. The six-plus straight games included the rest of the UNO game, at Florida State, at Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, at Auburn and at Kentucky). TOP 10 BATTLE IN PMAC When No. 6 LSU battled No. 1 UConn battle on Feb. 25, it marked the 12th game between top 10 teams in the Maravich Center. LSU is 4-8 those games, including the loss to the Huskies IN LEAGUE PLAY FOR SECOND TIME LSU is 14-0 in the Southeastern Conference for the second time in program history. The Lady Tigers have defeated Arkansas twice, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State twice, Auburn, Kentucky twice, South Carolina, Florida Alabama, Tennessee and Ole Miss in the conference this season to join the team with at The team posted a perfect 14-0 mark in the SEC. LSU also claimed regular season SEC title that season. LSU VS. NO. 1 LSU dropped to 2-11 all time vs. the nation s No. 1 ranked team with the loss to UConn on Feb. 25. The Lady Tigers victory at Tennessee on Feb. 14 was just the second win over No. 1 in the program s history. The other win over No. 1 came against Tennessee, 72-69, on Feb. 21, 1999 in Baton Rouge. STREAKS SNAPPED LSU saw its 14-game overall win streak and its 12-game home win streak snapped by UConn on Feb. 25 with the loss. The Lady tigers had not lost since falling at Middle Tennessee State on December 28th prior to the loss to the Huskies. The 14-game win streak was the longest for LSU since posting 14 straight wins to open the season. 11 FOWLES NAMED SEC S POY Sylvia Fowles was named the SEC s Player of the Year by the coaches. The senior is just the second LSU player to receive the SEC's Player of the Year honor, joining Seimone Augustus who earned the honor in 2005 and Fowles led LSU to the program's third SEC regular season title with 17.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. The Miami, Fla., native also shot 60.6 percent from the floor and collected 16 double doubles, including 10 in league play. CHANCELLOR GETS SEC S COY Van Chancellor, is his first season at LSU, was named the SEC s Coach of the Year by his peers after guiding the Lady Tigers to a perfect 14-0 league record. He is the third coach of LSU to earn the honor, joining Sue Gunter (1997, 1999) and Pokey Chatman (2005). The honor is the fourth for Chancellor who spent 19 seasons as the head coach at Ole Miss and received the award in 1987, 1990 and FOWLES NAMED SEC S DEFENSIVE POY In addition to her Player of the Year honor, Sylvia Fowles was named the SEC s Defensive Player of the Year by the coaches as well. The award is the first such honor for an LSU player. Fowles blocked 46 shots, collected 43 steals and pulled down 196 defensive rebounds during the season. HIGHTOWER NAMED 6TH WOMAN Sophomore Allison Hightower was named the SEC s Sixth-Woman of the Year by the coaches, sharing the honor with Vanderbilt s Jessica Mooney. Hightower averaged 7.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game overall and 7.4 points in SEC games. Her point total was third on the team behind Fowles and Chaney. She is the just the second LSU player to win the honor, joining Fowles in THREE NAMED ALL-SEC LSU s senior trio of Sylvia Fowles, Quianna Chaney and Erica White were all recognized by the SEC s coaches and the Assocaited Press with All-SEC honors. Fowles and Chaney were named to the first-team, while White earned second-team honors. Fowles pulled down her third first-team All-SEC to become the sixth player in school history to be a three-time all-conference selection. She joins Joyce Walker, Pokey Chatman, Cornelia Gayden, Katrina Hibbert and Seimone Augustus. Chaney, who averaged 14.9 points per game, received her first first-team All- SEC honor. The senior from Baton Rouge was named second-team all-conference last season. White, who averaged 7.1 points and 4.3 assists per game overall and 9.1 points and 4.4 assists per conference game, earned her first SEC post season honor. The Lady Tigers have won 11 straight firstround games in the tournament. AS AN AT-LARGE This is the 16th time the Lady Tigers entered the NCAA Tournament as an atlarge selection. LSU is now in those tournament games after the win over Jackson State. The only two times the Lady Tigers where not an at-large selection was in 1991 and 2003 after earning the Southeastern Conference automatic bid by winning the SEC Tournament.
