LSU found that person when Hall of Famer Van Chancellor became the fifth women s basketball coach in school history in Chancellor, a veteran head coach of 30 years at both the collegiate and professional levels, brought an impeccable resume to LSU, one that included leading the United States to a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics Games, four WNBA titles with the Houston Comets and 14 NCAA Tournament appearances at Ole Miss. In three seasons at LSU, Chancellor has guided the Lady Tigers to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and one NCAA Final Four. LSU has produced one SEC Player of the Year, one SEC Freshman of the Year and three State Farm All-America honors under his watch. Chancellor enhanced his legacy in his first season in Baton Rouge, leading the Lady Tigers back to the Final Four for the fifth straight season and guiding the program to its third SEC regular season title in four seasons. For his efforts, Chancellor was named 2008 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year by both the coaches and the media and was one of four finalists for the Naismith National Coach of the Year award. He became the third coach of LSU to earn SEC Coach of the Year honors. Chancellor led the Lady Tigers to a perfect 14-0 SEC record and the school s third outright regular season league title. During the team s run, he coached his 600th career game on Nov. 29 at Houston. In his first season back at the collegiate level, Chancellor helped LSU become only the second school in the history of NCAA women s basketball to advance to THE VAN CHANCELLOR COLLEGIATE RECORD five straight Final Fours. It was also the first Final Four appearance for him as a head coach. One year later, Chancellor delivered what might have been his finest coaching performance. LSU lost all five starters and eight letterwinners from its 2008 Final Four team, yet the Lady Tigers still managed to finish in a second-place tie in the 2009 SEC final standings. Chancellor and the Lady Tigers reeled off five straight wins to close the regular season and punctuated that with an 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament despite boasting one of the three youngest teams in America. LSU advanced to the second round and nearly knocked off eventual national championship game participant Louisville in the Maravich Center. The season was another 20-win campaign for Chancellor as the Lady Tigers once again reached the NCAA Tournament second round before falling to Duke on its home floor of Cameron Indoor Stadium. On Dec. 30, 2009, Chancellor notched another milestone by winning his 500th career game when the Lady Tigers knocked off 13th-ranked Xavier in Cincinnati. He became the 24th active Division I coach to reach 500 wins and the 39th Division I coach all-time to reach the 500 plateau. Chancellor served for 10 years as head coach of the Houston Comets from During that time, Chancellor was named the WNBA Coach of the Year three times (1997, 1998, 1999) and he led the franchise to the league s first four titles. Under Chancellor s direction, the Comets were the only team in the WNBA to make the playoffs in each of the first seven seasons of the league. Chancellor s teams posted a record in 10 seasons, which today still makes him the winningest coach in league history. YEAR TEAM RECORD PCT. For the fourth time this season and the second against Ole Miss, LSU buried a season-high 10 three-pointers en route to victory. LSU was an efficient 10-of-17 from 3-point range and finished the season series 20-of-40. Webb scored 20 of her 23 points in the first half, representing the first 20-point half by an LSU player this season. She finished 8-of-13 from the floor and a career-high-tying 6-of-9 from three-point land. Her six threes elevated her to seventh place in LSU singleseason treys with 63. For the first time all season, every Lady Tiger on the roster scored a point in a balanced attack. LaSondra Barrett had nine points in her homecoming. Taylor Turnbow added eight points and freshman Jeanne Kenney fired in nine points with two threes. Point guards Latear Eason and Destini Hughes dished out five assists apiece. Ole Miss held a slim lead with 13:14 to go in the first half before LSU began an offensive explosion. Valencia McFarland netted a three but Webb answered with her third of the game to give the Lady Tigers a advantage with 10:36 left. Webb s shot ignited a 12-0 LSU run that crippled Ole Miss. The Rebels went six minutes without a field goal, and LSU poured it on with layups by Courtney Jones on assists from Hughes and Webb buried another trey. Kenney got into the three-point act with one of her own from the left wing that increased the lead to with 5:08 left in the half. Webb put the finishing touches on the half with a three that made it LSU did not let up in the second half, outscoring the Rebels in the final stanza. Ole Miss recorded only four field goals in the second half and one in the first 10 minutes. During the dry spell, LSU outscored the Rebels What s At Stake Five games remain on the regular season schedule for LSU, who is vying for a 13th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Tigers are attempting to earn a first round bye in the SEC Tournament for the 10th straight year. The current streak of nine is the longest in the SEC. The top four seeds receive a bye. Both Auburn and Kentucky -- LSU s next two opponents -- are ahead of the Lady Tigers in the standings. LSU will play only one more home game following Thursday s Auburn contest. Noting The Georgia Win on Jan. 30 LSU held Georgia to 41 points, the Lady Bulldogs fewest total in the series history and tying for their fewest in an SEC game ever. Georgia also scored 41 in a loss to Tennessee on Jan. 14, 2007 in Athens. Georgia has failed to get out of the 40-point range in three straight meetings against LSU. The Lady Bulldogs had 46 in 2009 and 49 last season vs. LSU. LSU currently has held two SEC opponents to under 50 points in three straight meetings -- Georgia and Alabama. It was the first win for LSU when scoring under 50 points in the Van Chancellor era and the first since the 2007 NCAA Tournament Second Round vs. West Virginia on March 19, (49-43 in Austin, Texas) SERIES HISTORY: AUBURN LEADS Auburn leads the all-time series 29-15, and AU is 11-8 all-time against LSU in Baton Rouge. LSU has won six of the last nine meetings overall, but Auburn has won two in a row in Baton Rouge, including a overtime thriller last season on Jan. 10. LaSondra Barrett had 27 points and 10 rebounds in that loss. Auburn rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final two minutes for the win and LSU went scoreless from the field in the final 4:53 of that game. Destini Hughes missed a potential game-tying layup at the buzzer. Allison Hightower missed the final seven minutes of that game to cramping. Earlier this season, LSU was never in the loss on the Plains. Jan. 16, 2011 Auburn 65, LSU 53 Auburn, Ala. Barrett Reaches 1,000 Points, Three Days Later Reaches 500 Boards LaSondra Barrett etched her name into the LSU record books with two milestone achievements. Barrett became the 29th player in school history to reach 1,000 points, doing so with seven points in a loss to Arkansas on Jan. 27. She became the first LSU player to do it since Allison Hightower on Nov. 22, 2009 versus Nicholls State. Barrett needed seven points going into that contest and going into Thursday s Auburn game she has 1,029 points. Three days later in an upset of Georgia on Jan. 30, Barrett topped the 500 rebound mark for her career, becoming the first LSU player since Sylvia Fowles during the season to reach the mark. She is the 24th player in school history to gather at least 500 rebounds. She needed one going into the game and finished with a career-best 12 boards. Entering the Auburn game, she has 515 rebounds. Barrett also became the newest member of the 1,000-point, 500-rebound club, the first by a Lady Tiger to do that since Fowles. She is the 17th player in school history with 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. LSU vs. The Ranked LSU improved to 2-3 against ranked teams this year following the win over No. 20/24 Georgia on Jan. 30 in Baton Rouge. LSU s other ranked win came in grand fashion in Los Angeles with a victory at No. 8/9 UCLA on Dec. 28. The Georgia win was LSU s first over a ranked team at home since beating #20 Vanderbilt, 55-39, on Feb. 18 last season. LSU will face ranked teams again when they take on Kentucky on Feb. 13 and Tennessee on Feb. 27. The Lady Tigers losses to ranked teams were against then-no. 7 Ohio State, top-ranked UConn and No. 5 Tennessee. Katherine Graham s Last Five Games Katherine Graham, LSU s most experienced player and one of three seniors on the team, has been the Lady Tigers vocal leader this season. She has taken her game to another level in the past five games. Graham, one of two players in school history with a tripledouble, has averaged a team-best 13.6 points in the past five games. Despite LSU s offensive skid, Graham has reached double-figures in four of her past five games, including a season-high 22 points in the loss to Arkansas on Jan. 27. Graham also has a combined 16 assists and 31 rebounds during that stretch. Prior to the Florida game, Graham was averaging 7.5 points. She is now up to 8.7 points per game. Graham is one of 16 players in school history with over 250 assists. She reached the mark earlier this season and she sits in 14th place in LSU career assists with 275. She passed Allison Hightower last game and needs two more to move into 13th place. Graham is seeking to become the 12th player in school history with 300 assists. In SEC play, Graham ranks fourth in the league in assists per game with 3.9 and she is third in assist/turnover ratio (1.5). Graham scored a team-high 17 points in the loss to Vanderbilt on Feb. 3, but she rallied LSU back from a nine-point deficit. She finished one field goal shy of a career high with eight. She missed the three previous games -- Alabama (Jan. 9), at Mississippi State (Jan. 13) and at Auburn (Jan. 16) -- after suffering a concussion in the second half of the South Carolina game on Jan. 6. She missed the remainder of that game. Eason has had some tough luck injuries during her career. She injured her collarbone in the 2009 NCAA Tournament second round and last season missed the 2010 NCAA Tournament after suffering a concussion in the SEC Tournament. Prior to the Alabama game, LSU had the started the following combination in 11 straight games: Eason, Katherine Graham, Adrienne Webb, LaSondra Barrett and Taylor Turnbow. Following the Texas Southern game on Dec. 14, head coach Van Chancellor announced that senior guard Andrea Kelly had left the team to focus on medical school. Kelly was accepted to pre-med at Southern Illinois. Kelly will remain on scholarship until she earns her undergraduate degree in the spring. Kelly was sidelined all of last season due to a stress fracture in her foot a week prior to the season opener. She also tore her right ACL in the spring. LSU was without the services of senior forward Jasmine Nelson through the first 24 games of the year, but she saw her first action of the season with three points and one rebound in the final five minutes of the Ole Miss game on Feb. 6. It was her first action since the 2010 NCAA Tournament Second Round at Duke. Nelson underwent a lateral release surgery on her left knee in late October. The UCLA Recap: LSU 55 #8/9 UCLA 53 Los Angeles Dec. 28 Taylor Turnbow scored a career-high 18 points and buried a game-winning six-foot jumper with 15 seconds left to lift LSU to its sixth straight win with a upset of previously unbeaten No. 9 UCLA on Dec. 28 in Pauley Pavilion. Turnbow was terrific from start to finish, gathering a career-high 13 rebounds to go with her 18 points for her second career double-double. She swatted three shots and finished 7-of-9 from the floor, none bigger than her game-clinching bucket off an assist from LaSondra Barrett in the final seconds. Latear Eason added 10 points and Bianca Lutley came off the bench in the second half with six points. LSU held a lead with 3:28 to play following a Turnbow layup, but the Bruins rallied to tie the game at 53 apiece when Christina Nzekwe netted her first points of the game on a jumper from the free throw line with 39 seconds to play. After a timeout, Lutley missed a shot on LSU s end with 21 seconds to play but Barrett gathered the offensive rebound and found Turnbow, who sank a shot in the paint. UCLA got three looks in the final six seconds. Rebekah Gardner missed a potential game-tying shot and Nzekwe missed a putback. The Bruins picked up the loose ball and called its final timeout. Dorenna Campbell then misfired with jumper off the back iron as the final horn sounded. UCLA was out-rebounded for only the second time this season as LSU grabbed 36 boards to the Bruins 27. LSU was 18-of-22 from the free throw line. UCLA has not lost since that night.
