18 POKEY CHATMAN HEAD COACH 55-4 (Second year) 15th season as a coach at LSU Birthdate: June 18, 1969 Age: 35 Hometown: Ama, La. College: LSU, 1991 It took less than one year after taking over the LSU Lady Tigers basketball program for Pokey Chatman to become an instant success. In her first full season as head coach of her alma mater, Chatman guided LSU to a 33-3 overall record, led the team to its first Southeastern Conference regular season title with a perfect 14-0 record and helped the program reach its second consecutive NCAA Final Four. Chatman did not go unrecognized for her success as she was named the National Coach of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and received the Naismith Award and the Victor Award as the country's top coach. Chatman, the fourth head coach in the program's history, was also named the SEC Coach of the Year and repeated the honor of being named the Black Coaches Association (BCA) Coach of the Year. The year also included the program's best regular season record of 27-1 and the Lady Tigers were ranked No. 1 in the polls for 11 weeks between November and March. The off season was not any less hectic for Chatman. She was named to the 27- member WBCA Board of Directors as the BCA representative and helped lead the United States World University Games team to a gold medal as an assistant coach. With Team USA, Chatman coached with Harvard head coach Kathy Delany-Smith to win her second medal in international competition, having also won a medal as a player with the 1990 USA Select Team. Chatman, a part of LSU's program as a player and coach for 17 years, became head coach in April of 2004 after Sue Gunter, a Hall of Fame coach and Chatman's mentor retired, but the task of guiding the team had began before that for Chatman & 2005 BCA Coach of the Year 2005 USBWA National Coach of the Year 2005 Russell/WBCA National Coach of the Year 2005 Naismith National Coach of the Year 2005 Victor Award Female Coach of the Year 2005 Louisiana Coach of the Year 2005 USA World University Games team assistant coach Bob Starkey Assistant Coach 17th year THE CHATMAN FILE AS A PLAYER AT LSU: Year Record Post-Season Highlights NCAA First Round Freshman All-SEC Team NCAA Sweet 16 First Team All-SEC NCAA First Round First Team All-SEC NCAA Sweet 16 Kodak All-American, SEC Tourn.
