6 Outlook KEEPING IT GOING "When you begin with the end in mind, you set the standard for the highest level of preparation and that's all I can ever ask of everyone involved, players, coaches, trainers, managers and support staff." Head Coach Pokey Chatman The past three seasons have been very successful for the Lady Tigers basketball program, but head coach Pokey Chatman, entering her third season at the helm, wants more. has posted a record over the last three seasons that included three consecutive NCAA Final Four appearances and two straight Southeastern Conference regular season titles. But, Chatman and the rest of the women's basketball team, want a national title to add to the trophy case. "When you begin with the end in mind, you set the standard for the highest level of preparation and that's all I can ever ask of everyone involved, players, coaches, trainers, managers and support staff," Chatman said. "If that culminates into championships, then we're moving in the right direction. If it doesn't, I still believe we're moving in the right direction." The Lady Tigers return three starters and five others from last year's squad that posted a 31-4 overall record, claimed a second consecutive SEC title with a 13-1 mark and advanced to the Final Four in Boston. The Juniors It is rare that a basketball team does not have any seniors on the roster, but the Lady Tigers have just that. Needless to say, a group of nine juniors that includes two transfers, will be called upon to lead the team. "First and foremost I will look to this class to provide the leadership both on and off the court necessary for us to reach our goals," said Chatman. "Leadership is a matter of action, not classification and their actions will play a major role in the success of our season." Leading the way is Sylvia Fowles. Fowles, a 6-6 center from Miami, Fla., was a first-team All-SEC selection and third-team All- American last season after posting 15.9 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. Joining Fowles as returning starters are Ashley Thomas, a 6-0 forward from Stone Mountain, Ga., and Erica White, a 5-3 point guard from Jacksonville, Fla. Thomas averaged 4.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in 22 starts, while White posted 5.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 20 starts. "Our returning starters are battle tested and I expect the confidence that comes from playing against and amongst the best to play a role in their development," Chatman added. "Sylvia and Ashley have both expanded their game with a ton of off season work, which will be even more evident with the addition of our newcomers to help shoulder the responsibility of owning the paint." 7 Outlook Preseason Accolades Athlon Sports Top North Carolina 2. Maryland 3. Oklahoma 4. Stanford 5. Ohio State 6. Duke 7. Tennessee 8. Georgia Baylor 11. Arizona State 12. Vanderbilt 13. Connecticut 14. Kentucky 15. UCLA Ashley Thomas RaShonta LeBlanc, a 5-7 guard from Port Arthur, Texas, started the first 15 games of the season as the point guard before White took over for the final 20 games. "Our point play is what garnered the most questions last year and I think RaShonta and Erica responded with a tremendous effort of running the team at different times throughout the year," Chatman added. LeBlanc averaged 3.2 points and 3.2 assists per game. Khalilah Mitchell a 5-11 guard from New Orleans, La., Quianna Chaney, a 5-11 guard from Baton Rouge, La., and Marian Whitfield, a 5-9 guard from Augusta, Ga., add depth in the back court. "Khalilah has worked hard this past offseason and is physically ready to make us better at either guard position," Chatman said. "Quianna Chaney has put herself in a position, both physically and mentally, to step up and contribute to our perimeter attack. I have confidence that she will blossom into the player she's capable of being. Marian Whitfield is expected to add depth at the shooting guard position." The junior class also includes transfers Katie Antony and Mesha Williams. Antony, a 5-10 guard from Anacoco, La., came to from Vanderbilt and will be eligible this season. Williams, a 6-3 center from St. Louis, Mo., came from Moberly Community College. Antony averaged 4.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists in two seasons at Vanderbilt with 29 starts. "Katie will provide us with unconditional leadership, all out effort, and her basketball knowledge will make us a smarter basketball team," Chatman said. "She's a coach's daughter, what can I say. Outside of the mental, she can stretch the defense with her ability to knock down perimeter shots and put her teammates in position to be successful." Williams, a first-team JUCO Kodak All- American last season, averaged 18.7 points and 10.7 rebounds at Moberly. Erica White The Sophmore Kristen Morris, a 6-2 forward from Lathrup Village, Mich., played in 27 games as a freshman last season and averaged 2.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per outing. "Kristen has really worked hard to get her body in shape to go along with her understanding of how we want to play the game," Chatman added. "She's a sophomore in class, but a junior in terms of basketball I.Q. She will add to our post attack." The Freshmen Allison Hightower and Porsha Phillips, along with junior transfer Williams came to this fall as one of the best signing classes in the nation and are expected to make significant contributions in their first season. Hightower, a 5-10 guard from Arlington, Texas, was a WBCA and McDonald's All- American last season at Juan Seguin High School after posting 21.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.0 steals and 5.0 assists per game. Phillips, a 6-2 forward from Stone Mountain, Ga., also earned WBCA and McDonald's All-American honors as a senior at Redan High School. She averaged 14.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 5.7 blocks, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals last season. "Porsha and Allison are both extremely talented players with good basketball instincts that I expect to make me forget they're freshmen," Chatman said. "They both possess the attitude to help us maximize their ability to improve our basketball team. Porsha has a nose for the basketball on both ends of the floor and plays bigger than her 6-2 frame. She's physical, athletic and has a nice shooting touch. Allison is everything you could ask for in a perimeter player. She can score, defend, rebound and set up teammates."
