6 Season Preview P It's A New Day Three exhibition games in Canada don't a successful season make. But three games over the Labor Day weekend left players and coaches with a good feeling entering the start of the season. Call it a positive vibe. Call it chemistry. Call it a new day and a new chapter in basketball. The 100th season of basketball blends veterans who have experienced both highs and lows and an exciting group of newcomers who bring new dimensions to the program. Together the group forms a Tiger team that appears to be just that -- a team that wants to be the surprise team in the Southeastern Conference in With and Garrett Temple firmly in the leadership roles on this team, the direction appears solid and it showed in Canada in wins over the University of Guelph, York University and the University of Toronto. found its range from the three-point area, was able to run the floor, found its way through 40-minutes of zone and showed a quickness not seen in recent years. This team will not be the tallest or the biggest inside unlike the past few years, but the talent level is there to run an offense that allows for more movement on the perimeter to open up shots for the offense. The Canada Trip For, this was really the perfect year to go on an exhibition tour and by waiting until Labor Day weekend to go to Canada, the Tigers were able to practice with their newcomers and take them on the trip. While won the games in a fairly easy fashion (92-60 over Guelph, over York, over Toronto), each of the games proved to have challenges that tested the Tigers and how they would respond. Junior college transfer Marcus Thornton led the Tigers on the trip, averaging 26.0 points per game as the guard hit 32-of-55 field goal attempts and more importantly 11 three-pointers in 25 6
7 Season Preview attempts (44 percent). Anthony Randolph averaged 13.3 points and a team best 6.7 rebounds, while veterans (13.0 points) and Mitchell (11.0 points) averaged in double figures. The Tigers as a team shot 48 percent from the floor and 36.9 percent from the international threepoint arc, some 30 percentage points higher than a season ago. averaged over six blocks a game and almost eight steals a contest. "This has been a great trip for us," said Coach John Brady. "We had a great week of practice. These three games have told us a lot about our team. We've been able to identify some strengths and weaknesses. It is going to put us ahead of where we normally are there is no doubt about it." "It was a great trip for us to take," said Mitchell, who played both the perimeter and post positions during the three games. "Everybody has gotten to know each other and get our mind right and concentrate on basketball. I like this team. I like how we are running and passing the basketball. It's a positive thing for us." Temple did not play in Canada after injuring his ankle playing for an all-star squad in China in the spring and then reinjuring the ankle in a pickup game this summer. Temple has been working hard to rehab the ankle in preparation for the season and the Tigers will need his defensive play to be successful in He has proven to be a solid distributor of the basketball and is able to play the point or anywhere on the perimeter in 's offense. The Veterans the skills necessary to become a good player. With the track record of development of players by the coaches, the 6-10 Randolph figures to get plenty of playing time in a couple of different spots. Bo Spencer prepped at Glen Oaks High and will certainly figure into the point guard position as during his time at, while Quintin Thornton has a body that seems with coaching to be one that can go down low and bang with the big bodies in the SEC. California native Garrett Green will work on his game while apparently redshirting for the season. The Coaches P Mitchell Nearing Milestones Mitchell is set to join elite groups in as he stands just 123 points away from the 1,000 career club and 110 rebounds away from the 500- rebound club, something less than two dozen players have accomplished in history. To do both in just three years lessens the number significantly. Mitchell, who has shown his knowledge of the fundamentals of the game since his arrival from Denham Springs High School, improved his threepoint shooting as a sophomore to 37.6 percent and has consistently averaged over 5.5 rebounds in his career. Look for him to continue that trend in an offense that will allow him to flow along the perimeter and move down on the block and mix it up with the big guys. The Temple Legacy This will mark the 10th year that a member of the Temple family plays for the varsity men's basketball program at as Garrett Temple enters his junior season (Temple's dad Collis, Jr., played in the mid-1970s for three years and Garrett's brother Collis III played four years in the early 2000s.). became eligible after serving his transfer time from Texas Tech at the end of the fall semester in 2006 and proceeded to be a big offensive factor for, hitting a team-best 52 treys and averaging 10.5 points per game, the second highest average of any returnee. transferred from Marquette and started 14 games, while looking for his niche spot in the offense. Mason is a slasher and a fighter for the rebound and if you are looking for someone to get on the floor and pick up a loose ball, Mason can be the guy. has worked hard in the weight room to continue to make his presence known at and in Canada he showed his talent both playing down on the block and shooting from the perimeter and there should be a spot where he can showcase his talents this year. Also back are sophomores Alex Farrer and Greg Terrebonne. Farrer can shoot the three-ball and got some playing time at the end of last season, while Terrebonne has helped the team after walking on last season, running the scout squad and getting the team prepared for games assisting in practice drills. Joining The Team Marcus Thornton hit 74 three-pointers as a Kilgore Junior College player last season and showed in the Canada series of games that his three-point shooting could be just what needs to get its long-range perimeter game rolling again. He is another of the players that honed his skills in the Baton Rouge prep ranks and now returns home to hopefully make his mark on the program. Randolph is a raw freshman, but he evidenced John Brady enters his 11th season as the head coach at, bringing the program back to stability while posting six straight winning seasons. Brady, a two-time SEC Champion coach and the coach to take the Tigers to the NCAA Final Four in 2006, is joined again by associate head coach Butch Pierre, one of the nation's premier recruiters and recognized as one of the top assistant coaches, and video guru John Treloar. Chad Dollar joins the staff this year to help in scouting some of the future stars for the Tigers with Jeff Clapacs joining the program as Director of Operations. The Schedule The Tigers again will have a challenging schedule that will feature the team's first appearance in the EA Sports Maui Invitational since will open play against Oklahoma State in the opening round. In other non-conference, the Tigers play will also take part in the Pizza Hut Big East/SEC Invitational at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, playing Villanova. will host Oregon State and Washington on the Saturdays before and after Christmas in the return matchups from a year ago when visited the West Coast, while the Tigers will return trips to Wichita State in December and Texas A&M prior to starting conference play in January. In conference play, where will look to right the direction after losing four conference games by three points or less, will host the Western Division teams and Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia from the Eastern Division. 7
