3 Trent Johnson Head Coach 1st year at LSU While it s true that the background of Trent Johnson, who was selected the 20th head men s basketball coach at LSU on April 10, 2008, may not have truly been known by casual basketball fans, those who are students of the game knew this was a quality coaching hire with a resume of success that was unequaled. The record of success shows that this is a fierce competitor who exudes toughness and demands it of his players. But while making those demands, he is devoted to his players and very protective of his team. His loyalty to his former players is evident by the fact that two of his former players are now members of the LSU coaching staff. Trent Johnson is a program builder. He is the newest link to the 100-year tradition that is LSU men s basketball, visiting with former players and coaches to bring together the past, the present and the future of the program. Johnson is charged also with the development of athletes both on and off the court and off the court he is working hard to make sure studentathletes understand the student part of their days at LSU. As he has proven in head coaching tenures at Nevada and Stanford, he has developed not just successful athletes and winning basketball teams, but young men who are having success in life. In his nine years combined as a Division I head coach at both Stanford and Nevada, he has won 159 games and taken teams the last six years to post-season play, including four NCAA appearances. In 2008, the Cardinal was 28-8, earning a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In 2003, Johnson was named WAC Coach of the Year when his team won 18 games and got an NIT bid. In 2004 his team won the league and tourney title with a school record tying 25 wins, advancing to the Sweet 16. Johnson was at Stanford at an assistant for three years before becoming a head coach. The Cardinal advanced to the NCAA Final FOur in Prior to that Johnson was an assistant coach at Utah from , Washington ( ) and Rice ( ). Johnson got his coaching start at the prep level, serving as an assistant coach at Boise High from While at Boise High, Johnson coached the sophomore B team while also serving as an assistant on the varsity squad. During his successful playing career at Boise State ( ), Johnson finished in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding. In 1976, the Broncos won the Big Sky Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In his senior season he was named All-Big Sky. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Sciene Degree in Physical Education from Boise State in Johnson, who was born in Berkeley, Calif., and calls Seattle, Wash., his home, is married to Jackie and they have two children: a daughter, Tinishia, 25, and a son, Terry, 22. Johnson brings a wealth of experience to his new job at LSU. He also brings a knowledge of the game that will excite longtime fans of LSU basketball looking for a new beginning to the program. He understands that as LSU basketball celebrates its 100th anniversary that there is a tradition and history of the program that he wants everyone to embrace. Success at Home Very quietly, another winning streak is developing after winning the first eight games at home this year LSU won its final three home games last season and now has an 11-game winning streak, tied for the 10th longest in the 38 years of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center: games season; First 8 games season 18 - Last 8 games season; First 10 games season 18 - Last 7 games season; First 11 games season 16 - Last 4 games seasons; First 12 games season 14 - Last game season; First 13 games season 14 - Last 7 games season; First 7 games season 13 - Last 6 games seasons; First 7 games season 13 - Last 5 games season; First 8 games season 13 - Last 11 games season; First 2 games season 11 - Last 3 games season; First 8 games season 11 - Four other times; LSU is three home wins away from what would be tied for the fifth longest streak in building history at 14 games and would have to run the table this season at home to be just behind the all-time win streak of 23 games set over the course of 15 home games in 1981 and the first eight games of the season. Despite LSU's troubles last year, the Tigers had a winning record at home for the 10th straight year LSU has had two break-even seasons but never a losing season in the 37 previous years of play in what was first known as the LSU Assembly Center LSU MEN S BASKETBALL

7 and in Aug renamed the Pete Maravich Assembly Center LSU was 9-6 a year ago and in 576 games is (74.8 percent) LSU is now in non-conference games (88.0 percent) at home. Heading Toward Six Million Tickets LSU in 576 games in this the 38th year of play at the Maravich Center has now sold 5,988,769, an average of 10,397 and that should mean the paid attendance should pass the 6 million mark at the Dec. 27 Washington State game. Since the building was remade into its present seating configuration of 13,215 prior to the there has been one paid sellout of 13,468 against Georgia on Jan. 25, 2006 With ESPN Game Day on hand, the Tigers drew 13,121 for a Jan. 6, 2007 win over UConn A reminder that paid attendance is based on tickets sold in available seats plus the number of students who use their free 3,500 seat total. LSU sold 11,511 tickets for the season opener with Jackson State (11/15/08) and that is the eighth most since the building was put in its present seating configuration: 1. 13,468 - vs. Georgia - Jan. 25, ,121 - vs. Connecticut - Jan. 6, ,507 - vs. - March 4, ,401 - vs. Florida - Feb. 24, ,053 - vs. Texas A&M - Dec. 5, vs. - Jan. 31, ,576 - vs. Kentucky - Feb. 25, ,511 - vs. Jackson State - Nov. 15, ,313 - vs. - Jan. 31, ,131 - vs. - Feb. 1, 2006 The Five-Year Plan In honor of the 100th anniversary of LSU men's basketball, a section of the upper level of the Maravich Center was put on sale as a season ticket for $100 for the season. To sweeten the offer, AD Joe Alleva said that if you bought the centennial special and renewed your tickets that the price of those tickets would not go up for five seasons. The Neutral Court In its first 100 years of basketball, LSU has a winning record on the neutral court with a mark of In LSU's two big years in the 2000s, the SEC championship years of 2000 (NCAA ) Sweet 16 and 2006 (Final Four), the Tigers were a combined 14-5 (8-2 in 2000, 6-3 in 2006) Last year LSU was 1-3 on the neutral court. Five Seniors With five seniors on the roster, this is certainly the most seniors LSU has had on its roster in many, many years. Two of the five seniors - Chris Johnson and Garrett Temple - were part of the NCAA Final Four team. Terry Martin transferred to LSU in mid-2006 but was not eligible until December of the season. Marcus Thornton and Quintin Thornton played their first season in after transferring from junior colleges. Garrett Temple Garrett Temple is making his way up the list of LSU statistical categories, although it will not be in the points and rebound totals. Some examples: Assists - Temple is at 382, seventh all-time, needs 17 to move up to sixth Blocks - Temple at 95, eighth all-time, five to be seventh player with 100 blocks Steals - Temple is at 150, 10th all-time, needs five to move into eighth place Minutes played - Temple is at 3,572, 9th all-time, 29 minutes to move into eighth Trying to project ahead with no derailments along the way such as dreaded injuries, it is expected that Temple will finish at least third in minutes played, probably fourth in assists, fifth in steals and fourth or fifth in blocks. While Temple has moved from the point guard position to the three guard position, the assists are still coming as the position still allows some pivotal passes to be made. Temple in the last four games has had 26 assists with 10 vs. Troy (11/30), seven versus Cal State Fullerton (12/2, five versus Grambling State (12/13) and four against Nicholls State (12/17). Terry Martin The senior had a sparkling game against Grambling (12/13) playing 17 minutes off the bench, hitting 6-of-7 field goals including all four three-pointers to finish with 16 points and two assists The four treys raised his career total to 104, just nine shy of 10th place Mike Hansen as the race for the spots in the top 10 continue between him and Marcus Thornton. Martin is 9-of-22 from the arc this season, averaging 5.6 points per game. Marcus Thornton Thornton's 32-point performance (against Troy 11/30) was his fourth of his career and LSU now has a 3-1 record when he scores 30 or more... Thornton has made 14- of-40 three-point attempts but is shooting 50.5 percent overall from the field (54-of-107), making him a good 40-of-67 (59.7 percent) inside the 20-9 three-point arc He is at 104 career treys, nine shy of cracking the three-point top 10. Thornton is averaging a team-best 17.3 points per game. The Tasmin Mitchell Countdown Surpasses 1,000 With 1:12 to go in the game Wednesday on an offensive put back, Tasmin Mitchell scored his 18th and 19th points and became the 37th player in LSU history to surpass 1,000 career points Mitchell was a key factor in the comeback win over Nicholls State as LSU was able to pound the ball down low to Mitchell who scored 16 points in the second half. Mitchell is averaging 12.8 points per game this season, right on his career scoring average for 79 games of 12.7 points per game With his 10 rebounds against Nicholls, he is now 38 shy of becoming the 35th player in LSU history to record 500 rebounds which would then make him the 19th in school history to accomplish both milestones. Mitchell is hitting an impressive 57.4 percent from the field (39-of-68) with 14 assists. The Denham Springs product has started every one of the 79 games he has dressed for. The last LSU player to start every game over a four-year career is Howard Carter who played as a freshman on the 1981 NCAA Final Four team and started 128 consecutive games over his career ( ) Brandon Bass in started all 59 games before going to the NBA and Chris Jackson started all 64 games in his two-year career ( ). The Young Points - Spencer and Bass Bo Spencer didn't have any assists in his opening start of the season at point guard, but the sophomore scored a career-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting that included three treys Last season, Spencer played lots of minutes some games and hardly saw the floor in others in his freshman season Now under the guidance of Coach Trent Johnson, Spencer is expected to settle down the LSU offense and get the team into the offense Spencer averaged 15.8 minutes a game last season, playing in 30 games (three starts), averaging 3.4 points per game and 1.2 rebounds Spencer had 43 assists and 27 turnovers... Against Nicholls Wednesday, Spencer rolled up his second best scoring night of the year with 17 points, hitting three treys He is presently third on the team in scoring at 11.6 points per game, hitting a nice 16- of-31 from the three-point arc. Freshman Chris Bass has a good assist-to-turnover ratio off the bench with 18 assists and just six turnovers, while averaging 12.5 minutes per game in the seven games he has played. That's how many consecutive wins LSU has over Louisiana competition at the Maravich Center. It is a streak that has now extended through 20 full years with Wednesday night's win over Nicholls State. On Dec. 6, 1988, LSU lost a decision to Louisiana Tech in overtime. Two nights later, the present streak began with a narrow win over McNeese LSU won five games against state schools last season and is 4-0 this year after the wins over Northwestern State, Centenary, Grambling State and Nicholls State LSU will face McNeese State (Dec. 22), Louisiana-Lafayette (Dec. 31) and Southeastern Louisiana (Jan. 3) to possibly extend the streak. In the last four seasons, LSU has made at least 70 percent in three of those seasons after not topping 70 percent since that 1989 record-breaking year. Marcus Thornton made 81.7 percent (94-115), Chris Johnson made 85.2 percent (46-of-54) and Garrett Temple 78.3 percent (54-of-69). So far in eight games, LSU is 127-of-171 at the free throw line (74.3 percent) The LSU starters are all strong at the line with Tasmin Mitchell (24-of-29), Marcus Thornton (16-of-21), Bo Spencer (15-of-16), Chris Johnson (25-of-33) and Garrett Temple (15-of- 19) The five starters are 95-of-118 so far (80.5 percent) LSU has made one less free throw (127) than the opponents have attempted (128). National Leader In Field Goal Defense LSU's defense has put the clamps on opponents shooting in the first seven games and it was paid off to the tune of the Tigers being the nation's number one team in field goal defense as of Monday's latest NCAA stats. Nicholls State at 41.3 percent was the first team to shoot over 40 percent this season. The Early Signees LSU men's basketball Head Coach Trent Johnson announced Wednesday afternoon that he has received national letters of intent from two players on the opening day of the week-long early signing period for college basketball. Signing with the Tigers was Eddie Ludwig of Metairie Park Country Day of Metairie, La., and Aaron Dotson of Ranier Beach High School in Seattle, Wash. Ludwig is a 6-8, 195-pound small forward for Coach Michael McGuire, while Dotson is a 6-4 two guard for Coach Mike Bethea. "Obviously, we are excited as a staff. We feel we have signed two quality young men from two very solid high school basketball programs," said Johnson, whose team plays its first game under his leadership Saturday in the season opener at 1 p.m. in the Maravich Center against Jackson State. "Both are winners. Aaron won the state championship at Ranier Beach which has a rich tradition of excellent players and Eddie was a game from winning the state championship at Country Day. "Both Coach Bethea and Coach McGuire are two excellent basketball coaches," Johnson said. "So we feel that both these young men are coming in to our program well-prepared to have an immediate impact." Ludwig led the Cajuns to the Class 1A state finals the past two seasons. After scoring 13.5 points per game as a sophomore, he averaged 23.2 points and 13.5 rebounds as a junior. Ludwig was the District 10-1A MVP and was selected to the New Orleans All-Metro team as a junior. The Cajuns finished and the past two seasons. Ludwig, who selected LSU over Wake Forest, Davidson, Tulane, California and Vanderbilt, was the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's Class 1A Most Outstanding Player. Dotson was rated a four-star recruit and the 89th-ranked prospect in his class and 22nd-ranked shooting guard according to Rivals.com and 22nd ranked shooting guard by Scout.com. Dotson averaged 13.5 points a game last season and his team won the Class 3A state championship. Seattle is also where LSU Coach Johnson grew up. Several prominent players have gone from Ranier to either college or professional ranks including Doug Christie (formerly with Seattle and LA Clippers), Jamaal Crawford and Nate Robinson (both presently with the NY Knicks), Roderick Stewart (member of last year's championship team at Kansas) and Louisville senior Terrence Williams. It marks the 12th consecutive year that someone from Ranier Beach has signed a Division I scholarship. Dotson chose LSU over Louisville, Washington and SMU. Next Up - Back Home For McNeese State The Tigers will put the 71-game home Louisiana win streak back on the line Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center as the Tigers host McNeese State in the final game before Christmas The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and televised regionally on CSTHD Tickets, starting at $5, are available online at LSUsports.net.
