3 John Brady Head Coach Ninth Year 2 SEC Championships 2 SEC Player of the Year Selections 3 SEC Western Division Championships * SEC Freshman of the Year Selections 5 Postseason tournament appearances in the last six years 12 Number of SEC wins in 2000, Number of LSU players who have graduated 27 Academic All-SEC honorees When John Brady first put a team on the floor of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, his Tiger squad was undermanned, undersized and underdogs. Teams hated to play the Tigers then because John Brady coached his team hard and they responded with several strong performances against the leagues top teams, but not many wins. Last year, in his eighth season at LSU, John Brady was coaching the LSU team as only he knows how -- with heart and passion, and knowledge of the game that makes him one of the best at in-game decisions. The LSU Tigers, in 2005, won the Southeastern Conference Western Division with a 12-4 record, won 20 games (including 14-of-the-last 19) and posted the first undefeated record at home in the SEC (8-0) since LSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament, putting the Tigers in postseason play for the fourth straight year and the fifth time in six seasons. LSU has had four consecutive winning seasons under John Brady and only three times in the program history has there been longer consecutive years of winning. In the last six seasons, LSU has won 119 games, one game shy of an even average of 20 wins per season. For the second time in the last six seasons, John Brady has coached the SEC Player of the Year and in those six years he has coached the SEC Freshman of the Year three times, including each of the last two years. Brady s 140 wins in eight seasons is the third most wins by an LSU basketball coach and only two LSU basketball coaches have served longer tenures. In his first eight seasons, John Brady has built a program at LSU with a record of success that is hard to argue with. He has given the LSU program the direction to grow and the chance to shine again. When Brady arrived on campus in March 1997 and was given the job of rebuilding the program, make no mistake; he knew his program would be riddled wtih shortcomings because of NCAA-imposed sanctions. He knew he would have the chance to mold the program from the ground up and build a foundation based on responsbility and accountability. Brady knows after eight years his knowledge of the game and his belief in discipline and responsibility for actions on and off the floor have made the LSU program strong again, one that LSU fans are proud of because they feel a part of the program. Brady s plan isn t just taking place on a hardwood floor in the Maravich Center. He has worked hard to show the public that that athletic and academic pursuits of the players should be challenged to the fullest. That s part of the reason that LSU basketball is not only a success on the court, but in the classroom as well. Hours are passed and posted toward graduation on a regular THE JOHN BRADY RECORD basis by scholarship players. The team GPA is now close to 3.0. Brady came to LSU after six highly successful seasons at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. He brought the program to a new level of excitement for the fans and to the team that is still talked about to this day. In his six-year tenure ( ), he turned the team into a consistent winner, posted a record of In Brady s six years at Samford, the team had three firstteam and five second-team all-league selections. In his time at the school, he had 14 members named to the all-league academic team. Now at LSU, the numbers are beginning to work for Brady both on and off the floor. He has had 27 players earn Academic Honor Roll status at LSU, plus 12 selections to the All-SEC team. The 51-year-old Brady is the father of two daughters (Brittany-15, Brooke-11) and is married to the former Misty Champagne. In eight seasons, John Brady has taken the Tigers a long way both on and off the court. The results is a program that is solid both athletically and academically. The top athletes in the country are seriously putting LSU at the top of their lists and Brady is earning the respect of his peers in the league. He has reestablished LSU back as a player in the SEC and the work is being done to keep LSU there for years to come. /----OVERALL---/ /---CONF.---/ YEAR SCHOOL W-L PCT. W-L PCT. It is the ninth SEC title in school history, placing it second all-time in league history behind Kentucky in regular-season conference crowns and it marks the second in the John Brady era, having also won the 2000 title. Brady, among active coaches, is now tied with Billy Donovan of Florida with two titles behind only Tubby Smith of Kentucky with five crowns. Brady has won three SEC Western Division titles and that is the best among active Western Division coaches at present. Also, with the men and the LSU women winning outright conference crowns, it marks the first time since the league starting sponsoring women's sports in 1982 that the same school has won the league men's and women's titles outright. Brady Up For Jim Phelan National Coach Award LSU men's basketball coach John Brady is one of 15 finalists announced by Collegeinsider.com for the 2006 Jim Phelan national coach of the year award... Previously known as the Collegeinside.com national coach of the year, the award was renamed in 2003 to honor Mount St. Mary's legendary coach, Jim Phelan, who coached more games than anyone in the history of college basketball. Joining Brady as finalists for this year award are: Jim Calhoun, Connecticut; Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh; Mark Few, Gonzaga; John Giannini, LaSalle; Mark Gottfried, Alabama; Karl Hobbs, George Washington; Ben Howland, UCLA; Mike Krzyzewski, Duke; Thad Matta, Ohio State; Bruce Pearl, Tennessee; John Thompson III, Georgetown; Bruce Weber, Illinois; Roy Williams, North Carolina; and, Jay Wright, Villanova... Previous winners of the award include Tubby Smith (Kentucky, 2005), Phil Martelli (St. Joseph's, 2004) and Mark Slonaker (Mercer, 2003)... A 20-member panel, chaired by Phelan, selects the winner. ESPN's Jay Bilas and former University of Kentucky All-American Kyle Macy headline the panel. All final ballots will be cast by March 12 and the winner will be announced at the NCAA Final Four. Brady Third LSU Coach To Win Multiple SEC Titles John Brady's second SEC championship makes him one of three LSU coaches in its 98-year history to win SEC regular season honors and all three have multiple titles: Harry Rabenhorst , 1953, 1954 Dale Brown , 1981, 1985, 1991 John Brady , 2006 Brady Second LSU Coach With Multiple Wins Over Kentucky A small thing, but for LSU Coach John Brady the win over the Wildcats (2/28) was his second in his career, the other coming in Brady becomes just the second LSU coach in the 98-year history of the program to have multiple wins over the Kentucky program... Of course, Dale Brown is the winningest coach all-time against Kentucky with 18 victories in his 25 years... Jay McCreary defeated Kentucky in 1961 and Press Maravich won in 1972 to account for LSU's 22 all-time wins against the Wildcats. Other Championship Notes Through the 2005 and 2006 (with one game left) SEC seasons, the Tigers have won 25 games, the second best number of wins in league play over a two-year period in school history The best is the 1980 and 81 seasons when LSU won 31 SEC games back in the 18-game conference seasons LSU could be the second team since divisional play began in 1992 to win the league title by three games if the Tigers defeat Ole Miss and Tennessee loses at Vanderbilt Kentucky won the SEC by six games in 1996 and four games in 2003 If LSU gets to 14 wins in the league, it's win total would be surpassed by only two teams in the divisional era Kentucky went 16-0 in 1996 and 2003 and South Carolina won 15 games in Tigers Win 21 Games The South Carolina win (2/28) gave LSU its 21st victory of the season, the second consecutive year the Tigers have won at least 20 games... Last year, the Tigers won 20 games, finishing for the year... The Tigers have won 20 games or more four times in the last seven seasons of the John Brady era ( ; ; ; and counting)... Over the last seven years, the Tigers have won a total of 140 games, a 20-win a year average. In its 98-year history, the Tigers have won 21 or more games 13 times (22); 1970 (22); 1979 (23); 1980 (26); 1981 (31); 1986 (26); 1987 (24); 1990 (23); 1992 (21); 1993 (22); 2000 (28); 2003 (21); 2006 (21 and counting). LSU is 26-5 (83.9 percent) since the start of the season... The 16 straight SEC home wins is the third longest league home winning SEC streak in school history and now the longest in the 35- year history of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center: Feb. 13, 1933 to Jan. 31, Jan. 14, 1952 to Feb. 22, 1954 *** March 3, 2004 to present *** Jan. 3, 1981 to Feb. 10, Jan. 14, 1984 to Jan. 26, 1985 The present 16-game home winning streak is far and away the best presently among SEC schools. All the teams will wear them in the SEC Tournament in Nashville, March Tigers Stay In Top 25 For Third Week LSU's two wins this past week moved them up to 21 in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls The Tigers are in the poll for the fifth time this year and the third consecutive week LSU the previous week was No. 24 in both major polls The Tigers debut this season came in the No. 25 spot in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls on Nov. 26 after winning at No. 13 West Virginia A loss to Houston put the Tigers back out and they returned to the poll on Jan. 30 when the Tigers were No. 24 in the AP poll LSU was 1-1 that week, beating Auburn (84-69, 2/1) and then lost at Alabama (67-62, 2/4) Despite another 1-1 week, LSU returned back on Feb. 13 at 25th in both polls... The Feb. 26 poll marks the 175th appearance in the AP poll since first making the poll on Dec. 16, 1952 LSU's record as a ranked team is and 6-2 this year LSU's five poll appearances is the most since the Tigers were ranked for nine AP polls during the season. Against Ranked Teams LSU had every opportunity to be 3-0 against ranked teams early in the year, holding an advantage at No. 21 Ohio State for much of the game (12/31) before losing at Columbus, Ohio, and having the same situation of leading much of the way at Hartford (1/7) against No. 2 Connecticut, before the Huskies prevailed, On Nov. 26, the Tigers defeated West Virginia at the WVU Coliseum, in overtime, with the Mountaineers standing at No. 13 in the Associated Press poll. The Ohio State loss stopped LSU's three game straight regular season win streak over an AP ranked team, beating 14thranked Alabama (61-59) and No. 24 Florida (74-71) in Baton Rouge last February to go with November's West Virginia win... The most astonishing thing about the West Virginia game is the fact that the win over West Virginia marked the first time in the history of the AP poll, that LSU had defeated a non-sec ranked AP team on its home floor... WVU was the highest-ranked foe the Tigers knocked off since beating No. 7 Florida, 65-61, in the 2003 SEC Tournament... The victory was the first by LSU on the road over a ranked team since the Tigers beat Florida, when the Gators were ranked No. 22, 73-70, in Gainesville on Feb. 14, The WVU win was the third win for a John Brady Tiger team against a ranked team on the road... Overall, LSU is now against ranked teams in the AP poll after falling to No. 7 Florida (2/8). LSU Three-Point Streak Ended in Fayetteville Against Arkansas (1/11), the Tigers were 0-8 from the three-point arc... It was the first time in 262 games that LSU failed to make a three-pointer... The last previous game in which LSU failed to make a three-pointer came on Feb. 5, 1997, when LSU was 0-for-3 in a loss in Baton Rouge to Ole Miss. Three-Point Shooting, Down, Up, Now??? After shooting no worst than 38.9 percent (twice) at the arc in the seven games from January 18 through February 8, the Tigers were 7-of-35 in the games at Florida (2/11), Mississippi State (2/15) and at Auburn (2/18) At Vandy, the thing went back a little bit the other way as LSU made 5-of-14 attempts (35.7 percent)... The Tigers are now 119-of-355 or 33.5 percent LSU opponents have made 35.3 percent, but the opposition has attempted 161 more three-pointers and made 63 more treys than the Tigers. It has been a season of runs as prior to the good seven games at the arc, LSU's five games prior to Jan. 18, LSU was just 24.3 percent from the arc. LSU is now 10th in three-point percentage LSU shot 50 percent or better from the arc in five games a year ago, and the Auburn game (2/1) was the third this year LSU is coming off a season in which they made 205 three-pointers, the second most in school history... This was following a season in which the Tigers made just 168 treys and 33.6 percent of their attempts... In league play, LSU's average of 35.4 is fifth in the league. The least three-pointers by LSU in the Brady era was his first year, , when the Tigers made 140 treys. A New LSU Three-Point King Crowned Just before the clock ticked down to 10 minutes in the Mississippi State game (2/15), LSU senior Darrel Mitchell made his second three-point field goal of the game to become the school leader in three-point field goals with The previous record
