The contest will be televised live on Cox Sports Television and can also be heard in the Baton Rouge area on FM. Members of the Geaux Zone on may access live streaming audio. Sunday's meeting could play an important role in determining NCAA Tournament positioning in March. LSU (5-3) has turned in valiant efforts against likely postseason teams Notre Dame and Xavier (Ohio), and the Lady Tigers will be seeking a crucial victory against the Seminoles to boost its resume prior to conference play. The Florida State game is the first of three tough nonconference matchups for LSU against quality major conferences. The Lady Tigers play host to Nebraska on New Year's Day at 1 p.m. CST and then travel to face top-ranked Connecticut in Hartford at 11 a.m. CST on Jan. 3. The LSU-UConn game will be televised to a national audience on CBS. LSU has won four straight games and put the finishing touches to a Christmas break with a blowout win over Centenary on Dec. 20. The Lady Tigers, playing in their first road game of the season, recorded their biggest road win in over 10 years since dismantling UL-Lafayette, 84-38, on Nov. 19, Defense has been the key for LSU, who gives up only 48.4 points per game. That figure ranks first in the Southeastern Conference as the Lady Tigers have held four straight opponents to 41 points or less. Junior preseason All-SEC guard Allison Hightower averages 12.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. Freshman forward LaSondra Barrett is second on the team in scoring with 8.8 points and 4.9 boards, and sophomore guard Katherine Graham is tops in rebounding averaging 5.6 a game. Florida State (9-4) is one of the elite teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference again this season. The Seminoles have lost two consecutive contests, but gave No. 1 Connecticut a tough run in the Cancun Caribbean Classic on Dec. 21. The Huskies led by as many as 22 points until FSU trimmed the lead and lost by a score of LSU owns a 5-2 record all-time against Florida State since the first meeting between the two in The Lady Tigers have won three straight games in the series. The Lady Tigers advanced to Final Fours in 2004, '05, '06, '07 and '08. Connecticut is the only other school to achieve the feat, doing so from LSU has produced three SEC Championships, two SEC Tournament championships, two National Player of the Year awards and two United States gold medal Olympians. Fourteen Lady Tigers have been picked in the WNBA Draft, including last year's No. 2 selection Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky. Fowles and former All- American Seimone Augustus helped lead Team USA to the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics earlier this summer. HAPPY HOLLIDAYS LSU returns to the court after an eight-day break for the Christmas hollidays. The Lady Tigers bring a four-game winning streak into Sunday s game after a blowout win at Centenary on Dec. 20. That was LSU s first road game of the season. Today s Florida State game is the first of three pivotal games prior to the start of Southeastern Conference play. SEC S NO. 1 SCORING DEFENSE LSU brings the top scoring defense in the SEC into the Florida State game as the Lady Tigers only give up 48.4 points per contest. Mississippi State is second in that category after allowing 50.2 per game. LSU has led the SEC in scoring defense the four previous seasons. Despite boasting eight newcomers and three starting true freshmen, the Lady Tigers are seeking to continue that same legacy this season. Defense has been the cornerstone of LSU s five NCAA Final Four teams. Texas Southern scored 30 points on Dec. 1. Louisiana Tech scored 41 on Dec. 15. Southeastern Louisiana scored 40 on Dec. 18, and Centenary managed only 31 points in Shreveport on Dec. 20. That is an average of 35.5 points per game LSU is allowing in its last four contests. Texas Southern s 30 points were the fewest allowed by LSU since West Virginia scored 25 points in the season opener. That was also the last season the Lady Tigers held at least two opponents during the year to 31 points or less. LSU 8-2 VS. ACC TEAMS SINCE 2003 LSU owns an 8-2 mark versus Atlantic Coast Conference teams since the season. Three of those wins have come against Florida State. The Lady Tigers last played an ACC opponent when LSU knocked off #2 North Carolina, 56-50, to advance to its fifth straight Final Four in an NCAA Elite Eight matchup at the New Orleans Arena on March 31, LSU has won two straight against ACC foes with its last loss coming at Maryland, 75-62, on Nov. 18 last season. The Lady Tigers only other loss to an ACC team since 2003 came at the hands of #4 Duke in the 2006 NCAA Final Four Semifinal. LSU HAS NOT TRAILED AT HALFTIME LSU has not trailed at halftime in any of its eight games this season. The Lady Tigers have held leads in seven of their contests while being tied at the half, 24-24, against #16/14 Notre Dame in the season-opener on Nov. 16. LSU has owned double-digit halftime advantages in four games this season. In their last four games, the Lady Tigers have averaged a 16.7 margin lead going into the locker room. LSU has outscored its opponents in the first half this season and is leading opponents in the second half. KELLY HEATING UP FROM 3-POINT LAND Junior guard Andrea Kelly has come off the bench and provided nine 3-pointers in the last five games, including a career-best 4-of-9 effort at Centenary on Dec. 20. Kelly scored LSU s final 12 points of the first half at Centenary and made three straight 3-pointers. The Shalimar, Fla., native is a team-best 10-of-25 (.400) from 3-point range.

The Lady Tigers buried a season-high eight 3-pointers and shot 54.4 percent for the game en route to its biggest win since Jan. 20, 2008, at Mississippi State. Freshman forward LaSondra Barrett scored all 11 of her points in the first half, and freshman center Ayana Dunning came off the bench with a careerbest 10 points. Kelly scored LSU s final 12 points of the first half. The Ladies were held to 25 percent from the floor on 6-of-24 shooting as LSU held its fourth straight opponent to 41 points or less. Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers shot 54.4 percent from the floor for the game as the Lady Tigers opened up a halftime lead. ROAD TRIP The Centenary game on Dec. 20 marked LSU s first road game of the season. That contest represented the latest LSU has played its first road game of a season since Dec. 28, On that date, the Lady Tigers played their first road game of the season at Tulane and won That contest was LSU s eighth game of the year that season. The Centenary win was also the Lady Tigers eighth game of this season. LSU travels out of state for the first time when it takes on No. 1 Connecticut on Jan. 3 in Hartford. That game will mark the latest the Lady Tigers have played their first game out of state since the season. That season, LSU did not play a game outside Louisiana borders since it lost at #9 Georgia, 76-61, on Jan. 4, The Lady Tigers played seven home games in a row to open that season and then traveled to Tulane. A CONSTANT LINEUP? LSU head coach Van Chancellor has used the same starting lineup in the Lady Tigers last three games and is 3-0 during that stretch. TURNBOW S BLOCK PARTY Freshman forward Taylor Turnbow ranks fifth in the SEC and 32nd in the nation in blocks per game with 1.9. Turnbow is the only true freshman in the SEC s top eight in blocks per game. FANTASTIC FRESHMEN LSU s roster features seven true freshmen who have accounted for 242 (49.4 percent) of the Lady Tigers 490 points this season. Two of LSU s top three scorers are true freshmen. NOTING HIGHTOWER Junior guard Allison Hightower, a preseason first-team All-SEC selection by the league s coaches, has been the Lady Tigers most valuable player to date. Hightower leads LSU in three categories: minutes (29.8), steals (2.1) and points per game (12.1). Hightower ranks 13th in the SEC in scoring, 11th in steals and ninth in minutes played. Hightower has reached double-figures in scoring in three consecutive games and six of the Lady Tigers eight contests this season. Hightower has recorded at least one steal in seven of LSU s eight games. She owns one double-double to her credit with 15 points and 11 rebounds versus #25 Xavier on Nov. 26. A CAREER NIGHT FOR HIGHTOWER After struggling for only six points against Notre Dame in the season-opener, junior guard Allison Hightower erupted for a career-high 19 points on Nov. 24 against Tulane and then equaled her career-high with 19 points against Middle Tennessee on Nov. 30. Hightower has set or matched career highs in five categories. Her 19 points eclipsed her previous mark of 17 points versus Samford on Nov. 9, Hightower s 19 points were the most by an LSU guard since Quianna Chaney had 20 points against Arkansas on Feb. 28 last season. DECEMBERS TO REMEMBER LSU is 37-1 in the month of December since 2001 and has won 37 of its last 38 games in the month. The Lady Tigers only loss during that span was at Middle Tennessee on Dec. 28, Prior to that game, LSU had not lost in the month of December since Dec. 29, LSU was 5-0 in , 9-0 in , 4-0 in , 6-0 in , 5-0 in and 5-1 last season. The last time the Lady Tigers lost to an instate opponent was Dec. 31, 1999 at Tulane by a score of LSU has won 31 consecutive home games against Louisiana opponents. HIGHTOWER NAMED PRESEASON FIRST-TEAM ALL SEC BY COACHES The preseason honors continue to roll in for LSU junior guard Allison Hightower, who was named to the All- Southeastern Conference First Team in a vote of the league's coaches. Hightower was picked to the Preseason All-SEC Second Team by the media. Hightower, a native or Arlington, Texas, was the SEC Sixth Woman of the Year after averaging 7.1 points and 2.5 rebounds as a sophomore on the 2008 NCAA Final Four and SEC champion team. LSU PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH IN SEC BY MEDIA, COACHES The Lady Tiger basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Southeastern Conference in a voting of both regional and national media members and in the coaches poll as well. RECRUITING CLASS RANKED 16TH IN NATION LSU s recruiting class during the early signing period in November was ranked 16th in the nation by HoopGurlz.com. The four players will be eligible to compete during the season and include Bianca Lutley, a 5-11 guard from Plantation, Fla.; Adrienne Webb, a 5-10 wing player from Madison, Ala.; Jasmine Nelson, a 6-2 forward from New Orleans; and Erica Williams, a 5-8 transfer guard from Gonzales, La. Lutley, ranked the 24thbest player in the nation and the fourth-best point guard by HoopGurlz.com, will play her senior season at American Heritage High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after lettering for three seasons at Pensacola (Fla.) High School. Lutley earned Class 4A All-State honors as a junior after averaging 22.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists a game. The Lady Tigers claimed the Southeastern Conference regular season title with a 14-0 mark and reached the championship game of the SEC Tournament. The season began with a runner-up finish to Maryland in the Preseason WNIT and after a late December loss at Middle Tennessee, LSU rattled off 14 straight wins before falling to Connecticut on Feb. 25. Mary milestones were reached in starting with head coach Van Chancellor coaching in his 600th collegiate game on Nov. 29 at Houston. The Lady Tigers collected the program's 700th win with a victory over Kentucky on Jan. 27. Quianna Chaney scored her 1,000 career point on Jan. 3 and Sylvia Fowles became the fifth player at LSU to reach the 2,000 point plateau on Feb 14th. Fowles later became the SEC's career double doubles leader (Feb. 10) and LSU's and SEC's career leader in rebounds (March 2 & March 24). Fowles cleaned up when the SEC's post season honors were announced. The senior was named the Player and Defensive Player of the Year and earned firstteam All-SEC and all-defensive accolades. NOV. 16, 2008 Att.: 7,954 The 22nd-ranked LSU women s basketball team gave No. 14 Notre Dame all it could handle on Sunday afternoon, but the Fighting Irish used a 10-0 run down the stretch to defeat the Lady Tigers, 62-53, in the first game of the State Farm Tip-Off Classic. Both teams shot below 37 percent, and the Irish held a slim advantage on the boards. LSU trailed by as many as nine points in the first half before rallying to tie the score at 24 apiece at halftime. Junior guard Allison Hightower started the comeback with a jumper at the 7:27 mark. 14 VAN CHANCELLOR SEC COACH OF THE YEAR 36-9 at LSU (second season) Career (21st season in college) Van Chancellor, a veteran head coach of 30 years at both the collegiate and professional levels, brought an impeccable resume to LSU, one that included leading the United States to a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics Games, four WNBA titles with the Houston Comets and 14 NCAA Tournament appearances at Ole Miss. Chancellor enhanced his legacy in his first season in Baton Rouge, leading the Lady Tigers back to the Final Four for the fifth straight season and guiding the program to its third Southeastern Conference regular season title in four seasons. For his efforts Chancellor was named Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year by both the coaches and the media and was one of four finalists for the Naismith National Coach of the Year award. He became the third coach of LSU to earn SEC Coach of the Year honors. In the process, Chancellor led the Lady Tigers to a perfect 14-0 SEC record and the school's third outright regular season league title. During the team's run, he coached his 600th career game on Nov. 29 at Houston. In his first season back at the collegiate level, Chancellor helped LSU become only the second school in the history of NCAA women's basketball to advance to five straight Final Fours. It was also the first Final Four appearance for him as a head coach. Today, Chancellor sits at 474 wins in 21 collegiate seasons, and his winning percentage of.746 ranks as the 12th-best mark among active Division I head coaches. That mark also puts the Hall of Famer among the game's elites with the 12th-highest winning percentage of all-time. Chancellor became LSU's fifth women's basketball coach when he was officially hired on April 11, 2007 by then Athletic Director Skip Bertman. In addition to his 2007 induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, along with the likes of Roy Williams, Phil Jackson and Mendy Rudolph, Chancellor is also a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. 15 Chancellor had the distinction of coaching the Western Conference All-Star Team three times during his career and he was also named the coach of the WNBA's All-Decade Team in June of As head coach of the Comets, Chancellor produced the WNBA Most Valuable Player five times, the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year three times and the league's most improved player twice. Before his jump to the professional ranks, Chancellor spent 19 seasons at Ole Miss, developing the Lady Rebels into one of the nation's premier women's basketball programs. As the Ole Miss head coach, Chancellor guided the Lady Rebels to the NCAA Tournament 14 times, which included 11 consecutive appearances from 1982 to In 19 years at Ole Miss, Chancellor's teams won at least 20 games 15 times, including a school-record 31 wins in He also led the Lady Rebels to top 20 final rankings 13 times, with top 10 finishes four times (No. 5 in 1992, No. 6 in 1985, No. 8 in 1987, and No. 10 in 1984). Chancellor led Ole Miss to the Elite Eight at the NCAA Tournament four times, while his teams made the Sweet 16 on three other occasions. Chancellor was named the SEC Coach of the Year three times at Ole Miss, including the 1992 season when the Lady Rebels were 29-3 overall and claimed the league's regular season title with a perfect 11-0 mark. That year, the Lady Rebels reached the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight before falling to Southwest Missouri State. Chancellor played two years of basketball at East Central Junior College in Decatur, Miss., before transferring to Mississippi State, where he earned a bachelor's degree in math and physical education in He also entered the coaching ranks during his senior year at Mississippi State, serving as head coach of the boy's basketball team at Noxapater High School. Chancellor went on to coach boy's and girl's basketball at Horn Lake High School and Harrison Central High School in Mississippi.
