14 Creighton s Top Ten Arch Madness Moments By Creighton Otter Two hundred all-session tickets. That s it. That s all Creighton sold in 1991 for the first Missouri Valley Conference Tournament played in St. Louis. It s a far cry from the nearly 3,000 all-session ducats Bluejays fans purchased for the 2012 MVC Tournament, the 22nd iteration of Arch Madness. Played on campus sites from 1978 to 1990, the MVC Tournament made its debut at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis in March Creighton won the inaugural Arch Madness event; in the two decades that followed Bluejays teams would hoist the championship hardware six other times. Here s a quick glance at some of Creighton s most memorable moments at the MVC Tournament in St. Louis. Cole, Wrightsell Help the Dynamic Duo Win Another Championship (1991) Bob Harstad and Chad Gallagher, Creighton s Dynamic Duo, led CU in 1991 to a regular season Valley championship. Guards Duan Cole and Latrell Wrightsell powered the Bluejays to the tournament championship, though. Harstad won the tournament s MVP award, but Cole (52 points in three games) and Wrightsell (8 steals against Drake; career-high 16 points in title game) would join him and Gallagher on the All- Tournament team following Creighton s win over Missouri State. Buford Takes Control After Heeding Walker s Words (1999) Dana Altman s first tournament championship might not have happened if Ben Walker didn t pull Rodney Buford aside during halftime of the title game against Evansville and set the senior straight. Walker challenged Buford to take over against the Aces. Buford responded, ending with 21 points and 13 rebounds and leading CU to its first championship since Walker added 18 points and 11 rebounds, but his assist in setting Buford straight was the biggest play of the night. Sears, Walker Lead the Bluejays to a Repeat (2000) Ryan Sears and Walker took the #4 Bluejays back to St. Louis looking for a repeat championship. In addition to his 16 points and 5 rebounds, Walker s defensive plays late in a semifinal upset of #1 Indiana State helped the Bluejays reach the title game. In the championship, Sears took over. The tournament MVP paced the Jays with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals against Missouri State. After Coughing Up the League Title, Creighton Comes Through in Tourney (2002) A home loss to Drake in the regular season finale cost Creighton a chance to win an outright league championship. Kyle Korver and Terrell Taylor made sure the same didn t happen in St. Louis. Korver scored 20 points and Taylor added 19 in CU s semifinal win against Illinois State, setting up a showdown in the championship game with Southern Illinois. Taylor (20 points) and Korver (18 points, 9 boards) dominated the title game, earning All-Tournament Team honors as the Bluejays beat the Salukis. Bowden s Thievery, House s Slam Keep Bluejays Alive (2003) The Bluejays battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit to take a late lead in the semifinals, but Wichita State had a chance to win the game a few seconds left. DeAnthony Bowden snuck up from behind WSU guard Randy Burns and poked the ball to Larry House near midcourt. Following a CU timeout, House finished an in-bounds play with a flush that gave CU a 4-point lead and effectively put them in the championship game. The Pass (2003) One play symbolized Creighton s systematic dismantling of Southern Illinois in the 2003 MVC Tournament title game. Korver drove the right side of the Savvis Center floor, just inside midcourt. He threaded a bounce pass between two Saluki defenders and into the hands of sprinting center Joe Dabbert. In one step, Dabbert plucked the ball from the court and slammed it home. It was just one of many highlights in Creighton s win over SIU. Mathies, Motz Lead Creighton to Unlikely Title (2005) Johnny Mathies (tournament s Most Outstanding Player) and Nate Funk, CU s stars, guided the Bluejays to an Arch Madness championship. But it was Jimmy Motz s shooting that proved the difference as CU won another tourney title. Motz hit 10 of his 14 three-pointers during the weekend, including four in the championship game against Missouri State. Funk s Record-setting Scoring Touch (2007) Funk scored 66 points in St. Louis in 2007, including 33 against Missouri State in the semifinals. Both are school records. Snapping the Streak Against the Salukis (2007) When Creighton and SIU met in the 2007 title game, the Bluejays hadn t beaten the Salukis since the 2003 MVC Tournament Championship. But Funk (19 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds) led CU to a win, picking up the tournament s Most Outstanding Player award. Fellow seniors Anthony Tolliver (15 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals in the championship game) and Nick Porter (15 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals) joined Funk on the All-Tournament team. 1.9 (2009) The circumstances surrounding Booker Woodfox s game-winning shot against Wichita State in the quarterfinals of Arch Madness were frustrating. Creighton blew a 22-point lead, with WSU taking a lead with just a few seconds left. That set the stage for Woodfox to hit one of the more improbable shots in MVC Tournament history. With the clock reading 1.9 seconds, Woodfox took an inbounds pass, faked a shot, and pulled up from medium range for a jumper as time expired. The referees reviewed the play and counted the shot, sending CU fans into mass hysteria and leaving Shocker fans, well, shocked. 15 WHITE & BLUE REVIEW whiteandbluereview.com
