1 TIGERSTYLE missouri history

2 TIGER history Charles Fisher accepted the challenge of starting a wrestling program from scratch and became Mizzou s first wrestling head coach in For 13 seasons, from 1923 to 1936, Fisher s Tigers battled to the end against schools that had established wrestling programs several years before Missouri. The Tigers first dual meet took place in 1923 against the University of Oklahoma. Tiger heavyweight G. Milligan (first name not available), wrestled in the first match for Mizzou but lost. M. Blinder, a featherweight, later scored the school s first and only MU points of the match by earning a draw against his Sooner opponent. MU lost its debut In the next dual, an 11-9 loss to Kansas, more school history was made. Milligan recorded Missouri s first win with a victory over his Jayhawk foe, while R. Fergason, a light heavyweight, recorded the fledgling program s first pin. Fisher s novice squad finished the year with a victory over Washington (Mo.), marking the school s first win. The Tigers closed their first season with a 1-2 record. Over the next 12 seasons, Fisher coached several Big Six Conference champions. In 1928, when Mizzou finished third in the Big Six, Guy Sappington (135) became the school s first conference champion. Von Robbins (175) won Big Six titles in 1929 and 1930 and Marvin Fender (heavyweight) claimed a conference championship in Fisher, whose career record at Mizzou was (.336), left before the season and Sappington took over as coach. Sappington s squad won its first match 16-14, over Illinois State, but lost its last five and ended the season 1-5 (.167). Unfortunately, Mizzou would have to wait over two decades to get its next win. Due to financial woes caused by the Great Depression and lack of assistant coaches, the school was forced to drop wrestling after the season. THE RENAISSANCE After laying dormant for over 20 years, Missouri native Marshall Esteppe brought back Tiger wrestling in A former professional wrestler from Sturgeon, Mo., Esteppe became the head coach in 1959, serving for five years while concentrating on building a competitive program. The Tigers TigerStyle-70 Coach Brian Smith (left) along with former Missouri coaches Hap Whitney, Bob Kopnisky and Wes Roper. went 0-7 in their first year back to competition, but improved the next season to 4-5. The early going was hard, but the coach s hard work and determination generated support and kept the program on its feet. MU s first meet in 1959 came against Westminster College. Though they were defeated 28-10, Jim Jones (123) wrestled in the school s first match since the season, losing by a fall. Sophomore Dan Godi registered the school s first win in over 20 years with a pin of Westminster s Bill Wieda in only 1:34. The season saw Mizzou s first conference victory since 1936, a 26-5 win over Kansas. When Esteppe stepped down as head coach following the season, he left with a record of (.392) and the legacy of giving wrestling a second chance at Ol Mizzou. Perhaps the most inspiring story during the Esteppe era came from one of his studentathletes. Former Missouri Head Coach Bob Kopnisky leads the alltime list of Tiger wrestling coaches with 125 career wins. Kopnisky was head coach at Missouri from , leading nine of his student-athletes to All-America titles. A blind youngster named Rich Adams put aside his physical setback to become one of the Tigers best wrestlers. Despite his handicap, Adams led the Tigers in , with a 7-3 record, 27 points and three pins during his sophomore season. The following year, Adams again led his team in wins (10), pins (six) and points (42). In only two years, Adams registered the most wins (17), pins (nine) and points (69) under Esteppe. When Adams finished his career the following season, he left Missouri as the school s all-time leader in career points (113), single-season points (44), career pins (14), single-season pins (seven), quickest pin (:35) and was second in career wins (27). With Esteppe gone, the vacated head coaching position was placed in the caring hands of Hap Whitney. Originally coming to Missouri as an assistant under Esteppe, Whitney first arrived at MU in Whitney was a young man with a passion for the sport of wrestling. Winning 100 matches as a prep wrestler at Normandy High School in St. Louis, Whitney captured a Big Ten individual championship title at 130 pounds in 1956 and became an All-American the same season while attending Purdue University. In 1963, as an assistant under Esteppe, Whitney submitted a lengthy report entitled The Growth and Development of Amateur Wrestling in Missouri. The paper was for partial fulfillment of his requirements to obtain a Master of Education degree. Just one year later, Whitney was in charge of the growth and development of Missouri wrestling. Giving out athletic scholarships for the first time, Whitney helped the Missouri wrestling program take a big step forward in becoming a well recognized team. Steve Cavanaugh became the first Tiger in the modern era to reach the finals of the Big Eight Tournament. As a sophomore in 1967, Cavanaugh placed second in the 115-pound weight class, making history at the national meet by becoming the first Missouri wrestler to score points in the NCAA Championships. Cavanaugh won only his first-round match. The season saw Whitney lead the Tigers to an undefeated mark, the only unbeaten season in school history by any MU wrestling team. In , Whitney s squad won an dual against Northwest Missouri State,

3 COACHING TIMELINE Charles Fisher Guy Sappington Marshall Esteppe Hap Whitney Bob Kopnisky Wes Roper Brian Smith 1998-Present giving the school its 100th all-time victory. In 1972, the Tigers made the Hearnes Center their home, as well as the site of the conference tournament. The season was Whitney s last, and ironically, it was his alma mater Purdue which beat MU in Whitney s last effort as coach, Whitney closed out his coaching career with an impressive (.602) mark. NATIONAL PROMINENCE If Marshall Esteppe is credited with the resurrection of the Missouri wrestling program, and Hap Whitney is responsible for developing it into a consistent winner, the next man who took over, Bob Kopnisky, should be known as the one who brought Tiger wrestling to national prominence. In Kop s 12 years at the Tiger helm (he coached through the season), MU placed nationally at the NCAA Championships nine times, with its highest finish coming in 1984 when Mizzou finished 10th. The 10th place now stands as Missouri s second-highest NCAA team finish. Throughout his 12 seasons as the Tiger s head coach, Kopnisky led 11 student-athletes to All-America honors. Terril Williams (150) was Missouri s first All-American in When Kopnisky retired in 1986, he had compiled a careerrecord of , for a winning percentage of.633. Kopnisky currently stands as Mizzou s all-time winningest wrestling coach. On Kopnisky s squads was a tough 150- pound wrestler who would become Missouri s then all-time winningest grapplerwith 131 wins, earning All-America honors after finishing fourth at the 1982 NCAA Championships. In 1986, this wrestler became Kopnisky s successor; Wes Roper. Like his predecessor, Roper was Missouri s head coach for 12 seasons, compiling a career record of (.439). Over the 12-year span, Roper saw the chapter close on the Big Eight Conference and helped to usher in a new domineering conference in 1997, the Big 12. During Roper s time, nine Tigers were named All-Americans, including Shaon Fry who earned back-to-back honors in Fry stands tied with two Missouri wrestlers for the second-highest individual finish at an NCAA Championship, in second. What lies ahead Leading the Missouri program into the season is Head Coach Brian Smith. A youthful and determined coach, Smith has taken the Tiger team to new heights. The season marked the fifth straight year in which the Tigers finished among the top-15 teams in the nation. Three grapplers, Nicholas Marable, Raymond Jordan and Maxwell Askren earned All-America honors, the first of their career, and all three return for the campaign. During the course of the season alone, the Tiger team received its first No. 1 ranking, crowned three Big 12 Champions, qualified a program-high eight individuals for the NCAA Championships, recognized three All-Americans and finished a program-best third in the nation at the National Tournament. The rise to national acclaim has been progressive. During the course of the campaign, the Tigers tied a school record with 18 wins on the season. One year later, Missouri finished second at the Big 12 Championships held in Columbia, a feat that Missouri repeated in The initial runnerup finish in 2003 marked MU s highest conference finish since the Bix Six (1928). Crowning its first Big 12 Champion in 2003 Missouri has since seen an additional seven Tigers win a total of 11 league titles. Marking the 60th anniversary of the Missouri wrestling program, the season was one for the history books. Three Tigers earned All- America honors and three brought home Big 12 Championship titles, the most MU had ever had at one time. As a team, Missouri became the first school in the competitive Big 12 Conference to beat both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the same season, opening the campaign with a victory over the defending national champion Cowboys and snapping a 29-dual losing streak that dated back to the season. Additionally, Missouri became the first league school to beat both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in their home facilities during the season. In 2006 Ben Askren set the bar higher for future Tiger wrestlers. Askren capped off his perfect 45-0 season with a victory in the title round of the NCAA Championships. Missouri s first NCAA title in the 62-year history of the sport, Askren also received the Dan Hodge Trophy for his accomplishments on the mat. Askren repeated as both 174 pound champion and Dan Hodge Trophy recipient his senior year, With a career like no other Tiger in wrestling history, Askren was named 2007 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year and received an ESPY Male College Athlete of the Year Nomination, both firsts for Missouri. Smith and his team face one of the fiercest conference schedules in the nation. Comprised of Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Nebraska, all are annual inhabitants of wrestling s top-10 list and contend yearly for the national championship. Smith and the Tigers have brought a winning tradition back to Missouri and continue to add their names to the storied history of Missouri wrestling.
