Monday s contest is the first all-time between the two schools. u The game against Longwood is one of two games for Ohio against Big South opponents this week. 2 Last Time Out - Ohio 70, Richmond 69 (OT) Robins Center - December 22, 2013 RICHMOND, Va. - A last second 3-pointer from senior guard Nick Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) sent the Ohio University men s basketball team (8-3) home with a 70-69, overtime victory over Richmond (8-4) Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center. Ohio led with a minute to play, but Richmond rallied to tie the game at 61 and send it into overtime. In the overtime session, Ohio led by four (65-61) with 3:33 to play. The Spiders rallied to take a two-point lead (69-67) with 32 seconds to go, but Kellogg nailed the critical triple to give Ohio the victory. Kellogg finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds, while junior forward Maurice Ndour (Mbour, Senegal) added a team-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and chipped in seven rebounds in 35 minutes on the floor. Ohio shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the floor in the game and made 4-of-5 attempts in overtime. Longwood was picked to finish sixth in the North Division in the Big South Preseason Poll released in October. Longwood is led by first year head coach Jayson Gee, who served as an assistant coach at Ohio under Larry Hunter from and played an important role in the development of Gary Trent. The Lancers are led offensively by Second Team All-Big South preseason selection Tristan Carey. The senior guard ranks second in the conference in scoring with 19.8 points per game and is shooting 43 percent (40-93) from 3-point territory. Carey also leads the team in rebounding (6.6 rpg). In other Kellogg milestone news, the senior started his 100th career game against Valparaiso and is now sixth all-time in that category at Ohio (108). Next up on that list is Sonny Troutman (110). BOBCATS FEATURE STRONG ALL-AROUND DEFENSE Ohio currently ranks third in the MAC in field goal percentage defense (.404) and is fifth in 3pt FG defense (.316) this season. The Bobcats are 6-0 when they hold their opponent under 40 percent shooting and 4-1 when the opposing team shoots below 30 percent from beyond the arc. BALANCED SCORING KEY TO BOBCAT SUCCESS The Bobcats balanced scoring attack has been key during the team s 8-3 start this season. The Green & White are 5-1 when four or more players score in double figures in a game. Ohio has had eight different players score at least 10 points in a game in , and all five Bobcat starters average 7.8 points or better on the year. Maurice Ndour (14.5 ppg) and Nick Kellogg (13.7 ppg) and are averaging double figures in scoring this season. OHIO MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS After senior guard Nick Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) garnered the honor on Nov. 11, junior forward Maurice Ndour (Mbour, Senegal) was named MAC East Player of the Week on Nov. 18 and Dec. 2. During his most recent award week, Ndour averaged 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and shot 58 percent (11-19) from the field while leading Ohio to two home wins over Evansville and Mercer. #SWATCITY: BLOCKS KEY TO BOBCAT DEFENSE The Bobcats feature one of the most active front lines in the MAC this season. Ohio returns one of its top defensive players in redshirt senior Jon Smith (Grove City, Ohio) and welcomes a strong shot blocker in junior college transfer Maurice Ndour (Mbour, Senegal). Ndour ranks fifth in the MAC with 2.0 swats per game while Smith is sixth with 1.8 per contest. Ohio ranks fourth in the Mid-American Conference with 4.9 blocks/game this season. KELLOGG SETS SIGHTS ON 3-POINT RECORDS Senior guard Nick Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) enters his final year in Athens with a chance to surpass a number of school records from beyond the arc. With his third 3-pointer against No. 10/9 Ohio State, Kellogg passed Steve Esterkamp ( ) and moved into fourth on the all-time 3-pointers made list at Ohio. He s now made 227 triples in his career. The senior also is fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (.405) and sixth all-time in 3-point attempts (560). SMITH MOVES UP CAREER BLOCKS LIST With 20 blocks over Ohio s first 11 games, Jon Smith has increased his career blocks total to 113, placing him sixth all-time in the Ohio record books. With his three blocks at Oakland, Smith passed Reggie Keely ( ) and moved into sixth place on the all-time list. BOBCAT DEFENSE DEALS ACES DEFEAT In the win over Evansville on Nov. 30, Ohio held the Purple Aces to 37.3 percent shooting in the game and 21.4 percent (3-14) from 3-point territory. Evansville had come into the contest averaging 51.8 percent shooting from the floor and 45.1 percent from 3-point land. The Bobcats also held the nation s fifth-leading scorer D.J. Balentine (27.0 ppg) to just 15 points in the contest. BLOCK PARTY vs. VALPO Ohio swatted 10 shots against Valparaiso on Nov. 17, marking the first time since a December 2011 game against Marietta that the Bobcats blocked at least 10 shots. Ohio has only reached the 10-block plateau seven times since TOUGH FIRST FOUR Ohio s first four games included two home contests and two away tilts. The Bobcats finished the stretch with a 3-1 record. Ohio had opened the previous four seasons with at least four-consecutive home matchups. This is the first season since that Ohio has played a road game in its first four matchups. Three of Ohio s first four opponents (UNI, Ohio State, Valpo) reached the post-season in MAC PRESEASON POLL The Green & White were picked to finish third in the MAC East Division behind Akron and Buffalo. Akron was picked to win the MAC East, while Toledo was picked to win the West Division. PRESEASON ALL-MAC HONORS Senior guard Nick Kellogg (Westerville, Ohio) and junior guard Javarez Bean Willis (Homer, La.) were selected to the preseason College Sports Madness All-MAC Teams. Kellogg garnered All-MAC Third Team accolades, while Willis was named to the fourth team. OHIO ADDS FOUR IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD Ohio University men s basketball head coach Jim Christian has announced the signing of four student-athletes that will compete for the Bobcats beginning in fall The quartet of future Bobcats includes Kendall Crute (Marietta, Ga./North Cobb Christian), Nehemias Morillo (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Monroe College), Tariq Owens (Laurel, Md./TAAG Academy) and Rodell Wigginton (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/College of Central Florida). A four-star, top-100 recruit according to Scout.com, Owens is listed as the No. 21 power forward in the Class of 2014 and the 99th best prospect overall. Crute is ranked as the 17th best Georgia prospect in the Class of 2014 and No. 57 at his position by ESPN.com. Morillo - a former teammate of current Bobcat Maurice Ndour - is in his second year at 12th-ranked Monroe College (16.0 ppg), while Wigginton is averaging 17.8 points per game for the No. 20 College of Central Florida Panthers (JUCO) SCHEDULE PRESENTS CHALLENGES This season s schedule features 14 games against teams that qualified for postseason play in and a marquee intrastate matchup with Ohio State. ROSTER BREAKDOWN The Bobcats return eight letter winners from a squad that won 24 games, claimed a share of the MAC regular season title and earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. Ohio also welcomes six newcomers to the team, including five freshmen and Ndour, a junior college transfer. GOLDEN AGE OF OHIO HOOPS In what is quickly becoming the golden era of Ohio University men s basketball, the Bobcats have participated in postseason action for a school-record four-consecutive seasons (2 NCAA, 1 NIT, 1 CIT). Over the past two campaigns, the Bobcats have set a program record with 53 combined victories (24 in ; 29 in ). The team also has posted at least 22 wins in three of four seasons for just the second time in school history. TRAVELS WITH MAURICE Newcomer Maurice Ndour may well be the most worldly student-athlete to ever enter the Bobcat program. A native of Mbour, Senegal, Ndour left his home country as a teenager to pursue a high school basketball career in Japan. After four seasons at Okayama Gakugeikan on the island of Honshu, Ndour began his college career at Monroe, a junior college in New Rochelle, N.Y. As a result of his world travels, Ndour is fluent in five languages: English, French, Japanese and two African dialects (Wolof and Serer). Ndour was ranked No. 86 among junior college prospects by JUCORECRUITING.com this past year. BIG CATS The Bobcats will feature one of the tallest teams the program has seen over the past few years. Ohio scholarship players stand at an average of 77.5 inches, marking the highest player height average since the season (77.55 ). WILLIS, SETTY READY FOR ACTION After sitting out the season due to NCAA transfer guidelines, junior guard Javarez Bean Willis (Homer, La./ Texas Tech) and sophomore forward Treg Setty (Maysville, Ky./ Southern Illinois) are eligible to suit up for the Bobcats this season. Willis started 30 of 31 games for the Red Raiders in and averaged 8.1 ppg while distributing 58 assists (second-most on the team). BIG SHOES TO FILL For the first time since 2009, the Bobcats will be without the services of the all-time winningest class in school history. The tandem of Ivo Baltic, D.J. Cooper, Reggie Keely, Walter Offutt and David McKinley combined for 94 wins over four seasons while leading the team to three NCAA Tournament victories, an NIT berth, two MAC Tournament titles and a MAC regular season championship. BOBCATS ON TV The Ohio University men s basketball team will have as many as 12 games televised live during the campaign, including 10 league contests through the MAC television platform. Ohio made its television debut on Nov. 12 when the Cats took on No. 10/9 Ohio State on the Big Ten Network. JIM CHRISTIAN Head Coach Second Season Rhode Island 88 Record at Ohio: (.711) MAC Record: 14-2 (.875) The all-time winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history, Jim Christian became the 17th head coach in Ohio men s basketball history in April A two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year, Christian has led his teams at Ohio, TCU and Kent State to a combined seven post-season appearances in 11 seasons on the bench. During his career, Christian has mentored three All-Americans, three MAC Players of the Year and 28 all-conference selections. In just his first season at the helm in Athens, Christian earned NABC District 14 Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bobcats to a share of their first MAC regular season title since the campaign. The Bobcats earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament for the first time since 1995 and tied Ohio program records with 14 league wins and seven MAC road victories. Ohio s record increased Christian s winning percentage while in the league to.704 (162-68), the best mark in MAC history by a sizable margin. Christian s squad led the nation in assists per game (17.5) and ranked seventh in the country in turnover margin (+4.7), behind All-America honorable mention point guard D.J. Cooper. The first MAC Player of the Year from Ohio since 1995, Cooper ranked eighth in the nation in assists per game and became the first player in NCAA Division I history to record at least 2,000 points, 900 assists, 600 rebounds and 300 steals in a career. In addition to Cooper s superb campaign, Christian mentored a duo of third team All-MAC selections in Walter Offutt and Reggie Keely. Under Christian s tutelage, both seniors earned All-MAC honors for the first time in their careers. Christian returned to the MAC in 2012 after completing four seasons as the men s basketball head coach at Texas Christian University. In his final season in Fort Worth ( ), he led the Horned Frogs to their first postseason appearance since He coached six All-Mountain West Conference honorees, including first-team choice Hank Thorns Jr. and third-team pick J.R. Cadot. Thorns also appeared on the watch list for the Bob Cousy Award presented to the nation s top point guard and was named to the All-District 17 Second Team by the NABC. Thorns led TCU in in scoring (13.5 ppg), assists (4.66 apg) and 3-pointers (72). He also produced one of the top seasons ever for a TCU point guard in , as he finished as the only individual ranked among the nation s top-12 players in both assists per game (No. 4) and assist-turnover ratio (No. 12).
