2 All-Time Coaches Charles Pell ( ) Though s basketball history dates back to 1900, partial records exist only before Charles Pell was the first coach to lead a team for more than one season when he compiled an mark between R.F. Seymour ( ) R.F. Seymour s three-season record was 14-15, with his best mark coming in his first campaign when he finished at 5-4. One of the highlights was a win over in-state rival Drake in L.L. Mendenhall ( ) Former athletic director and head basketball coach L.L. Mendenhall, a member of s Hall of Fame, still holds the record for best percentage when he compiled a 27-7 record (.794) from His best season was , when his team finished 10-1 overall. The school joined the Iowa Conference during his tenure, in Arthur D. Dickinson ( , ) Another Hall of Famer, Dickinson is perhaps best known as a track coach and for the stillrunning Dickinson Relays held at s -Dome. O.M. Hon Nordly ( , ) With a tenure interrupted by World War II, Nordly compiled a record and won five conference titles, the first conference crowns earned in school history. His teams also beat Iowa State for the first time, defeating the Cyclones in He s a member of s Hall of Fame. Missouri Valley Conference Coaches of the Year James Witham ( ) Former athletic director and Hall of Famer James Witham won 63 games and lost 49. His last two seasons, he compiled records of 15-8 and 16-5, helping to set the stage for s approaching glory years. Norm Stewart ( ) Former Missouri head coach and Hall of Famer Norm Stewart compiled a record, won two conference titles and took the Panthers to two NCAA Tournaments. The team finished 23-4 in , a tied record that still stands for games won in a season. His teams beat Iowa State twice in and in Zeke Hogeland ( ) Hogeland compiled a record, with three straight winning seasons before falling to 6-20 in , in and in James Berry ( ) Jim Berry still holds the mark for having coached the most games in Panther basketball history at 354 after compiling a record. His tenure is best known for taking into the NCAA Division I ranks in He catapulted the Panthers into the Division II playoffs in , ending with an record, and the team just missed a NIT berth in when it finished overall, the same year defeated Wisconsin and Kansas State. Eldon Miller ( ) Former Ohio State head coach Eldon Miller compiled a mark with the Panthers. He led the Panthers to their first NCAA Division I tournament in 1990, the same year they defeated Iowa in the -Dome before a state-record crowd of more than 22,000. The Panthers joined the Missouri Valley Conference during his tenure. He was named the Valley s Coach of the Year in 1997, and is a member of s Hall of Fame. Sam Weaver ( ) Sam Weaver has the unflattering position of having one of the lowest win-loss record as a coach, but what isn t obvious from the record is that his tenure was plagued by injuries to key players and defections. Greg McDermott ( ) alumnus Greg McDermott piloted the Panthers to arguably the greatest sustained run of success in the program s history. He guided into three straight NCAA tournaments in 2004, 2005 and 2006, including coaching to its first ever Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship in He had a five-year record of 90-63, tying a school record with 23 wins in Henry P.
