Head Basketball Coach Wesley "Zeke" Hogeland After coaching Northern Iowa to a 1-12 season a year ago, head coach Zeke Hogeland should be well-versed on the art of coaching young basketball players.

And it's of that freshman team of a year ago that Hogeland says, " W e think we can get al least two conference titles out of them.

Hogeland was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, and attended UNI where he was a staroer at guard for "Hon" Nordly following his high school graduation in 1944.

4 Head Basketball Coach Wesley "Zeke" Hogeland After coaching Northern Iowa to a 1-12 season a year ago, head coach Zeke Hogeland should be well-versed on the art of coaching young basketball players. In he'll have to be. This season Hogeland plans on starting no less than lour sophomores off last year's super freshman team that became the only frosh unit to defeat the University of Iowa. And it's of that freshman team of a year ago that Hogeland says, " W e think we can get al least two conference titles out of them." W hich means that Hogeland, in his fourth year of coaching at UNI, figures at the very least a grooming season for '72 and '7. Hogeland was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa, and attended UNI where he was a staroer at guard for "Hon" Nordly following his high school graduation in He completed his collegiate work in three years, graduating in He later earned his master's degree in physical education at the University of Iow a in He started his coaching career at Decorah (Iowa) High School, then moved lo Iowa for graduaie study, and on lo Washington (Iowa) High School for lour seasons. Zeke started the collegiate climb at Mason City Junior College in 1955 where he had a seven-year record of , winning the slate title in He then moved to Bemidji Stale for five years, building a 57-4 record, closing with a 19-5 mark the year before laking over at UNI. Hogeland has had four articles published nationally, including his latest effort, " Reading Zone Defenses," which appeared in the November issue of " Scholastic Coach." 5 The Outlook Can Young UNI Cagers Overcome Inconsistency Tag? Last season head basketball coach Zelr.e Hogeland blended the play of a couple of veteran seniors 1ogelher with the inexperi ence of a pair of freshmen. The result? An inconsistent season in which the Panthers went from hot lo cold lo hot again, and finished with a 1-12 overall record. In Hogeland won't have lo combine any extremes-he'll start four sophomores and a junior-bu1 he still may have to face the problem of inconsistency, something that he quite franlr.ly expects from his youthful team. Expects Mistakes " We have no right lo expect anything too spectacular from this team," explains Hogeland. " W e'll be going up against some real veteran clubs, and I've been coaching loo long not to realize that youth and inexperience mean mistakes and inconsistency. "However," continues Hogeland, "we do expect lo see a good deal of improvement through the year, and we' ll be looking for big things from this year's sophomores in the next couple of years." An important key for the Panthers' 'ZI game season, which includes two tournaments in December, is how Hogeland' s youngsters will react to the loss of the graduated John Martin and Skip Anderson. (Anderson is a graduate assistant at UNI and is coaching the junior varsity.) Martin, Anderson Tops Marlin and Anderson were the No. I and 2 scorers a year ago, while Martin also led the team in rebounds with Anderson third in that department. And while UNI again has a pair of senior co-captains in guards Duane Jensen and Pete Wessels, they will likely be seeing only reserve duty in the Panther back-court. Hogeland's pre-season choice f<>r the starting five includes post man Randy Beillr.e, wing man Bill McCoy and guard Dave Harslr.amp, all starters of a year ago, along with wing man Darrell Timion and post man Brian Bestul. All but junior Harslcamp are sophomores. Bestul, Timion Play Key The play of Bestul and Timion may be the crucial factors for UNI in The two combined for a total of only 16 points last year. -4- But both returned lo school an inch taller than last year (they're now &-8), and, according lo Hogeland, both made substantial improvement between their freshman and sophomore years. Harslr.amp, probably the fastest man in school, has also shown noted improvement, and Hogeland p redicts the 6-2 sprinter from Sioux Center is only a step away from great ness. McCoy and Beillr.e are already proven starters, as they became the third and fourth leading scorers, respectively, on the varsity a year ago.

Buffalo Center F-FA FT FTA REB LO 5.1 UNl's other senior co-captain, Wessels is probably the finest hustler on the learn. A good learn leader, Wessels is excellent on the one-on-one s>tuation.
