1 Panthers Look to Snap 3-Game Losing Skid vs. Loyola Ramblers The University of Northern Iowa men s basketball team (11-13, 5-7 MVC) will take on the Loyola Rambers (9-15, 4-8 MVC) in the McLeod Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eric Braley (play-by-play) and Kevin Lehman (analyst) will call the action for the Panther Sports Television Network KCRG 9.2, CFU 15, WOI 5.2, KCAU 9.2 and ESPN3. A limited number of $5 general admission tickets are available for the final three homes of the season, including Wednesday s contest vs. Loyola. Sophomore guard Matt Bohannon averaged 18.0 ppg and drained 10 3-pointers over the past two-game stretch for the Panthers. Junior guard Deon Mitchell moved into 10th-place on UNI s all-time assist chart on Saturday vs. Wichita State with four assists. Mitchell has tallied 268 career assists. UNI has owned a halftime lead in 18 of its 24 games this season. The Panthers had led in nine consecutive games at half but saw that streak snapped on Saturday vs. Wichita State. Brooks McKowen earned All-District VII honors in 2007, while Adam Koch earned All-District VII accolades in IT S A MATTER OF WINS, LOSSES In UNI s 11 wins, the Panthers are scoring 80.7 ppg and giving up 64.9 ppg. UNI is shooting 50.4 percent in its wins, including 42.3 percent from 3-point land. In UNI s 13 losses, the Panthers are scoring 68.2 ppg and giving up 77.2 ppg. UNI is shooting 41.0 percent in its losses, including 30.5 percent from 3-point land. UNI has also enjoyed success at home in the month of December. UNI is 24-6 all-time in the month of December in the McLeod Center. FOUR TRUE NON-CONF ROAD GAMES UNI played four true road non-conference games prior to Jan. 1 for only the third time in head coach Ben Jacobson s tenure with the Panthers. The Panthers traveled to Ohio (Nov. 9), George Mason (Nov. 16), Milwaukee (Dec. 3) and Virginia (Dec. 21) prior to Jan. 1. The two previous times the Panthers have played four true non-conference road games before Jan. 1 in the Jacobson era occurred in the season (Washington, Bucknell, Iowa, Loyola) and in the season (Syracuse, Milwaukee, TCU, Iowa). DEON DOES IT AGAIN Mitchell posted a game-high 20 points and dished out seven assists in leading UNI to a non-conference win over Iona (12/28). Mitchell tied a career-high with four 3-pointers against the Gaels. Mitchell shot 6-of-10 from the field and drained 4-of-5 free throws vs. Iona. SETH S SUPERLATIVES UNI junior forward Seth Tuttle recorded his 13th career double-double with 15 rebounds and 11 points in a win over Iona. The 15 rebounds was the most by a UNI Panther player since Eric Coleman nabbed 15 rebounds vs. Illinois State (March 8, 2008) at the MVC Tournament. His 15 boards against Iona also tied him for the most rebounds ever by a UNI player in the McLeod Center (held by Grant Stout and Jordan Eglseder). TUTTLE ON THE OFFENSIVE GLASS Seth Tuttle notched seven of his 11 rebounds vs. Virginia (12/21) on the offensive side of the glass. It marks the third time in his career that he has had at least seven offensive rebounds in game. The previous two times were at Saint Joseph s (3/14/12) when he grabbed nine offensive rebounds and vs. Illinois State (3/2/13) when he nabbed seven. MORGAN PROVIDES A SECOND-HALF SPARK VS VCU Freshman guard Jeremy Morgan drained all three second-half 3-pointers he attempted in a win over VCU. Morgan scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and made all three of his free throw attempts vs. the Rams. MARVIN MAKES HIS MARK Junior forward Marvin Singleton entered the VCU game having played in two games, having scored four points and having played in 20 minutes all season. Singleton made the most of his opportunity in UNI s win over VCU (12/14). Singleton scored nine points (3-for-3 from the field) and grabbed six rebounds (three offensive) as he helped lead the UNI bench attack against the Rams. The UNI bench outscored VCU, BUSS STOPPED SAVANNAH, VCU Junior forward Nate Buss shot 78.6 percent for the week of Dec and averaged 13.0 points per game to go along with 7.0 rebounds per game in leading UNI to a pair of wins over Savannah State and VCU. Buss scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and tallied two steals in a win over Savannah State. Buss then drained his first seven shots from the field and scored a team-high 16 points in a win over VCU. Buss also added seven rebounds against the Rams. Over the two-game stretch, Buss made 11-of-14 shots from the floor. Buss ranks No. 2 in the MVC in field goal percentage at 65.7 percent. WES IS MORE UNI sophomore guard Wes Washpun scored back-to-back career-highs with 16 points against Milwaukee (12/3) and 18 points vs. Iowa State (12/7). Mitchell averaged 15.0 points per game and 5.3 assists per game in the tournament. Mitchell shot 43.8 percent (14-of-32) from the field and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the free throw line. THREE 20-POINT SCORERS UNI had three players score 20 or more points in a over Loyola Marymount (11/22). The Panthers had Deon Mitchell (23), Matt Bohannon (22) and Seth Tuttle (21) surpass the 20-point scoring mark at the Paradise Jam vs. the Lions. The last time UNI had three 20-plus point scorers in the same game came on Dec. 1, 2004, when UNI s Erik Crawford (28), Ben Jacobson (27) and Eric Coleman (24) accomplished the feat in a win over Iowa State in the UNI-Dome. BOHANNON COMES UP BIG Sophomore guard Matt Bohannon came up big in the scoring chart at George Mason (11/16) and against Loyola Marymount (11/22). Bohannon posted a 19-point effort at George Mason. UNI OPENS EXHIBITION PLAY WITH WIN OVER BEMIDJI STATE UNI posted a exhibition victory over the Bemidji State University Beavers Oct. 25 in the McLeod Center. Junior Seth Tuttle led all scorers with 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor. Tuttle also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and dished out five assists. UNI led 15-8 with 8:28 left in the first half before BSU went on an 11-2 run to take a lead with 4:43 remaining before intermission. The Panthers broke the contest open in the second half with a 20-point scoring advantage in the second half. UNI also tallied a edge in the rebounding battle in the second stanza. UNI outrebounded BSU, TV EXPOSURE UNI will make at least 20 appearances on television this season, including 12 national TV slots. UNI TO MAKE 5 APPEARANCES ON ESPN FAMILY OF NETWORKS The University of Northern Iowa men s basketball team will make at least seven appearances on ESPN s family of networks as announced by the Missouri Valley Conference office. VCU at UNI on Dec. 14, will be broadcast live on ESPNU at 11 a.m. UNI will make its first of three appearances on ESPN3 when the Panthers travel to Charlottesvile, Va., to take on the Virginia Cavaliers on Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. Both matchups this year against Missouri State will be broadcast live on ESPNU. The first matchup in the McLeod Center between UNI and Missouri State will be on Jan. 18 at Noon. The second matchup at JQH Arena in Springfield, Mo., will take place Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. The Panthers will be featured in backto-back games on ESPN3 on Jan. 29 vs. Evansville and Feb. 1 vs. Indiana State. Both games will be in the McLeod Center. UNI will host the Wichita State Shockers on Feb. 8 in a game that will be shown nationally on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. Through its various platforms, ESPN provides us with an essential national promotional vehicle, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin said. Our institutions recognized the importance of ESPNU and ESPN3 in the formative days of both outlets, and as a result, ESPN has rewarded the league with heightened exposure. UNI TO MAKE FOUR APPEARANCES ON MVC TV PACKAGE The University of Northern Iowa men s basketball program will make at least four appearances on the Missouri Valley Conference s in-house television package. The Valley, with Niles Media Group of Kansas City serving as its production company, has worked in conjunction with FOX Sports Midwest -- along with its sister regional cable outlets FOX Sports Indiana and FOX Sports Kansas City -- and Comcast SportsNet Chicago to clear all basketball and Olympic sport telecasts. Our television network has made great strides since we made the decision to bring its operation in-house, beginning with the academic year, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin said. From modest beginnings, we now produce all of our network men s and women s basketball contests in high definition, televise all nine games from the men s basketball tournament and continue to air the title contests from six additional championships, including our women s basketball tournament, said Elgin. The Panthers will open league play with an MVC-TV broadcast of the Bradley at UNI game on Jan. 1 in the McLeod Center. The Panthers next game at Wichita State on Jan. 5 will also be shown on MVC- TV from Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan. UNI will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, on Feb. 19 to take on the Drake Bulldogs for an MVC-TV broadcast. PANTHERS SIGN WYATT LOHAUS IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD University of Northern Iowa head men s basketball coach Ben Jacobson announced the signing of Wyatt Lohaus (North Liberty, Iowa/Iowa City West HS) to a National Letter-of-Intent to play for the Panthers. Our program is thrilled to add Wyatt, Jacobson said. He has proven himself to be a tremendous leader and teammate. Wyatt s work ethic and competitiveness are terrific and have allowed him to improve his game every year. He comes from a quality high school program that has had great success. All of these things make Wyatt a perfect fit. Lohaus (6 2, 185 lbs., Guard) has helped lead Iowa City West High School to two consecutive Class 4A state championships and back-to-back undefeated seasons (52-0). Lohaus earned a spot on the 2013 state tournament all-tournament squad. Lohaus was a first-team all-state pick as a junior and was a second-team all-state pick as a sophomore. Lohaus is a two-time first-team all-conference honoree. Lohaus has scored 763 career points heading into his senior season. He scored 103 points as a freshman, 305 points as a sophomore and 355 points as a junior. He shot 51.8 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from the 3-point arc as a junior. Lohaus averaged 13.7 points, 5.0 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game last season. He is the son of Anne Lohaus and Brad Lohaus.
