4 Straight from the coach's mouth. "Already we can see that we'll be a much better defensive team this year than we were a year ago. Our squad knows we have to do a better job in that area, and their attitude has been just great. We'll rely heavily on quickness.... " "Our problems last year were emotional in nature. The talent was there, but the experience and maturity wasn't; as a result, we had a.. multitude of mental errors,.:... not only the obvious ones like bad passes and traveling violations, but also the notso-obvious ones like missing the open man and passing up the high-percentage shot... " "The improved play of Randy Beilke is a good example of the kind of generally better basketball we can expect from the whole team. Randy, it's obvious, has much more confidence in his abilities this year, and has looked outstanding in pre-season drills. He, along with the other veterans, have also shown considerable improvement in their ball skills..,." But a "new start" Season No. 5 for Hogeland It's season No. 5 for University of Northern Iowa head basketball coach Zeke Hogeland; and yet, in many respects, it's a whole new start for the veteran of 21 cage seasons. For Hogeland has at last watched his first big recruiting class mature to upperclassman status, a process which was painful, to say the least, for UNl's present junior class. And it's up to that same crew, led by sharp-shooting guard Bill McCoy, to make good 6n Hogeland's bold prediction of a year ago: "We think we can get possibly two conference titles out of them." 5 Juniors face year of reckoning is most certainly a year of reckoning for the University of Northern Iowa basketball program. And head coach Zeke Hogeland is not in the least bit shying away from the challenge that it brings. After two years of waiting, the big, talented group of recruits Hogeland atracted to UNI in the spring of 1969 have at last become upperclassmen - juniors to be specific. In fact, just as last year's starting line-up included four sophomores, this season's top quintet will be composed of four juniors, who, according to Hogeland, should be ready to play "two solid years of good basketball" at UNI. his most ardent desire is to see the Panthers improve in their defensive play, an area that also saw a bit of recordbreaking last season. UNI set records for most points allowed in one season (2,248) and highest defensive average for one season (86.5). Five Starters Return Hogeland won't assign any new faces to the task, just (hopefully) some more mature ones. All five starters plus two more lettermen return from last year's squad. That group of seven includes five juniors and two seniors, co-captains Dave Harskamp and Nick Bertram. McCoy' To Start Third Season The leader of the junior-dominated team is guard Bill McCoy of Iowa Falls, who will be starting his third consecutive season as a Panther. With half of his college career yet remaining, McCoy already ranks 14th on the all-time school scoring list with 805 points. A great junior season could put him close to Ken Huelman's record of 1,275 career points. Without wishing bad luck upon the sharp-shooting guard, Hogeland admits he'd like to see some pressure taken off McCoy in the scoring column. However, The juniors, besides McCoy, include 6-8 center Brian Bestul, 6-8 forward Darrell Timion, 6-7 forward Randy Beilke and 6-2 guard Bill Smith. All but Smith were starters last year, but Hogeland hinted in pre-season drills that Smith might move ahead one of UNl's three "big men", for the purpose of adding speed, especially defensively. Harskamp is expected to be the fifth starter. Behind McCoy's 21.2 scoring average last season were Bestul at 11.9, Timion at 11.0 and Beilke at l 0.6. Harskamp was fifth with an average of 6.4 points per game.

Was the leading conference scorer last year w ith a 24.1 average, had a 21.2 overall average and led the team in scoring in 19 of 26 games last year, incl uding the last 9. DAVE HARSKAMP Guard Senior Sioux Center Season G Fg-Fga Ft Fta Reb. Tp Ave Three is the magic number for Harskamp in his final season with the Panthers. The senior from Sioux Center will be a starter for the third straight year, and he has also become a t!jree-sport performer at UNI. DARRELL TIMION forward Junior Waverly Season G Fg Fga Ft Fta Reb. Tp Ave Led the Panthers in rebounding in with an average.of 8.6 per game, and was the third leading scorer w ith an 11.0 average. Lack of consistency hurt Timion's effort last year, and Hogeland expects that problem to be minimal.

Has the speed, quickness Panthers need, both on offense and defense. Started only several games in , but played in every one. Can really take the ball to the basket. Tp Ave l.2 Imaginative style of offense has good' influence on Hogeland's Panthers. Was ineligible 'second semester last year, but improvement in all areas of his game could make him a valuable reserve. JOE FERGUSON Guard Freshman Ottumwa One of three freshmen - Jim Davis of Oskaloosa and Rick Nielson of Algona are the others - who will wear varsity suits. Was a first-team all-state selection at guard, and one coach called him the best guard in the state since Gary Thompson of Roland played. Top reserves TIM HACKENMILLER Guard Junior St. Ansgar Season G Fg-Fga Ft-Fta Reb. Tp Ave l Adds slightly different d i(nension to the Panthers' game. A real scrapper on defense, Hackenmiller also is a good scorer from the outside. DOUG WITHAM forward Sophomore Cedar Falls Witham was the leading scorer on UNl 's junior varsity team last year with a 17.3 game average. Is very strong on the jump shot from the 15-foot range, and does a surprisingly good job on the boards for his size. A good outside scoring threat at forward.
