1 EXTRA! EXTRA! Front Page Worthy News! So it s not that there are not plenty of worthy kids out there, but it has been a very busy week the past 5 days. Gathering them all together for some pictures is our problem. Next week, maybe we can get things pulled together and round up the kids who deserve all of this praise and shine a light on them for the next issue of the Stampede. We find it hard to wait that long to show you, but we just haven t been able to find a time to bring them in, without disrupting their instruction time. We ll keep this spot open for them! * 1

The title of this article is Navigating the Middle Years. Think before you speak Your middle grader missed the bus for the second time this week, and you have to drive him/her to school again! Before bringing up a topic that makes you angry, use strategies to calm down, such as breathing deeply or simply waiting a few minutes. Then, start the conversation on a positive note by saying something like, You know I love you no matter what. Here s what we need to work on. Your discussion will be more peaceful and productive if they feel loved and understood from the beginning. Agree on guidelines Make a plan to ensure civil discussions with your tween. For instance, you might say that each person should be able to speak without being interrupted. Or set ground rules about no put-downs or yelling. Also, try to use I messages so no one feels attacked. You could say to them, I feel worried when you don t come straight home from school, instead of You never follow my rules! 3 A Stallion Traffic Jam During heavy school traffic times (7:30-8:30 and 2:30-4:00) there is no access to the school from the frontage road. Parents must enter from Himes by coming from the North behind the school. Students will be allowed to enter the nearest entrance to the drop off site during inclement weather. Retesting Except for 6 weeks and semester tests, students may retake any major test they failed. The student must arrange a time with the teacher. The maximum grade for a test retaken is a Important Minutes Homework Online The homework online is a parent s tool to know the homework assignments for their child. All teachers post homework daily. Check the teacher s websites. There are several ways to display assignments and they don t all use the same method. The very best academically productive time parents can spend is ten minutes per night checking the completion of homework. This procedure should start with checking Homework Online to find homework assignments. When the assignment is completed, parents should check the work for completeness before the students place the homework in their binder. Warning: >Do not accept the excuse, I left it in my locker. Incomplete work or zeros will be the result. >Do not accept, The teacher took it up. We never take up homework early. >Do not accept, I left my books at school. There is a set of textbooks on reserve at the Euless Public Library. If students complete and turn in all homework, success is the result. Zeros and/or incomplete work lead to failing grades and behavior difficulties. 4

If your child must be absent from school please call the attendance office at Students who maintain good attendance may receive semester test grade exemptions at the end of each semester. Two exemptions will be given for 0 absences during a semester; one will be given for 1 or 2 absences during a semester. 2ND SIX WEEKS ATTENDANCE AVERAGE % DON T BE LATE!! 9 Counselors Commentaries HEB s Promotion/ Retention Policy Parents of 7th and 8th grade students, please be aware of the district promotion/ retention policy. All 7th and 8th grade students will be required to pass English, Math, Science and Social Studies to be promoted to the next grade. Failure to pass STAAR may result in retention in grades 7 and 8. Social Skill of the Month Compassion/Kindness Showing sensitivity to others Step 1: Express interest and concern for others, especially when they are having troubles. Step 2: Recognize that ALL people deserve the same respect as anyone else. 9th graders must earn 5 credits before advancing to 10th grade. Step 3: Apologize or make amends for hurting someone s feelings or causing harm. Step 4: Recognize that people of different races, religions, and back-grounds deserve to be treated the same way as you would expect to be treated.
