4 It is fitting that UConn enters a new conference the year after graduating 18 seniors. The American Athletic Conference presents a far different set of challenges in both Track and Field and Cross Country than the Big East, and provides a whole new set of opportunities as well. The loss of 18 seniors creates the same scenario, a number challenges in the areas of leadership and competition that provide opportunity for a whole new group of leaders and competitors to emerge. Moving forward, look no further than the SPRINTS AND HURDLES for both of those qualities. Senior/redshirt junior Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) is a leader on and off the track. A Big East Champion in the 60m, his best event may be the 200m. His peers recognized his leadership abilities by electing him captain. Selwyn Maxwell, Jr. (Monroe, N.Y.) was an All-Conference selection in the 110HH last spring, and has made huge strides in adapting to a new starting technique. His leadership will be critical as he battles to come back from a bout with mononucleosis and master his new technique. Backups in both areas are young and unproven, but exhibit potential. Redshirt freshman TJ Elliott (Harrisburg, Pa.) and true freshmen Patrick Hayes (Walpole, Mass.) and Jared Delane (Windsor, Conn.) will back up Cummings while Randall Wall (Plainfield, N.J.) attempts to adapt to the 3 height differential to give Maxwell some backup in the HH. Senior Kyle Twombly (Penfield, N.Y.) scored in the 400m last spring and is the unspoken leader of the deepest group on the team, the 400m. From this group will come the 400 Hurdlers as well, with no clear favorite for that event as of yet. Freshman Chinedu Amonu (Ewing, N.J.) was an All-American in high school and has range down to the 60m dash, while Rob Hovanec (Gillette, N.J.) tries to prove his surprising success (46.6 relay carry) was no fluke. Upperclassmen John Rettenmeier (Sherman, Conn.), Dele Owoye (Danbury, Conn.) and Justin Doehr (Wallingford, Conn.) provide able back up to a group with an avowed goal to have the best 4 x 400 in school history SEASON OUTLOOK and Jake, NCAA Decathlon qualifier Jess Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) is back for the outdoor season, and co-captains Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Sean Walsh (Freehold, N.J.) will handle the indoor season more than capably. Sophomores Kris Horn (Pembroke, Mass.) and Pat Meyer (Hamlin, N.Y.) will do more than add depth, as Meyer, an indoor finalist in the HH will make his conference multievents debut, while Horn is one of the most promising multi-eventers to arrive in Storrs in some time. The JUMPS constitute one of the youngest groups on the whole team, with senior captain Cory Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.), an All-Conference pole vaulter and the only senior in the group. A promising group of horizontal jumpers is led by junior Amanze Williams (New Haven, Conn.), with a strong push from Harley LaCroix (Elkins Park, Pa.). Sophomore John Landis (Philadelphia, Pa.) competed in the USA Junior Nationals, and if healthy, could top the group. Veteran high jumper Toby Belton, (Westminster, Mass.) a junior, returns from While the MULTI EVENTS might be expected to struggle with the loss of the Waruch twins, Ben Senior Kyle Twombly Men s Track & Field 3

5 2013 CHAMPIONS Big East (Indoor & Outdoor), IC4A (Indoor) New England (Indoor) a devastating Achilles tendon injury and will have to fight off freshman DeMario Gray (Bloomfield, Conn.), seven-foot tall athlete from nearby Bloomfield High School. Duggan has a great supporting cast, including High School All-American Craig Hunter (Robbinsville, N.J.) and sophomores Tim Murphy (New Fairfield, Conn.), a conference scorer, and Connor Grunwald (Neshanic Station, N.J.). The 800m, a traditional UConn strong suit will be led by sophomores AJ Chavez (West Windsor, N.J.) and Robert Rhodes (Brooklyn, N.Y.), both conference scorers as yearlings. Rhodes was named All-Conference in the 800m as a freshman and Chavez anchored the conference champion 4 x 800 relay team. Senior Paul DeSalvo (Plymouth, Minn.), junior Phil Caldwell (Cheshire, Conn.), and redshirt sophomore Nick O Leary (North Attleboro, Mass.) will be joined by promising rookie Justin Alleyne (Queens, N.Y.), who is a former basketball player. The THROWS are led by senior captain Eric SEASON OUTLOOK Senior Eric Masington Masington (Trevose, Pa.), star of the show for last year s Big East Indoor Championship team, finishing in second and third places in the shot put and discus, respectively. Chris Ackell (Brookfield, Conn.) narrowly missed All-Conference in the hammer, while classmate Oluwatosin Edwards (Windsor, Conn.) continues to develop as both a 35lb. weight thrower and hammer thrower. Brian Eilers, Adam Boucher and Multi Eventers Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) and Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) make up a formidable group in the javelin, with the event leader hoping to be in the 215 to 220m range. 4 Senior Jesse Chapman Men s Track & Field Bryan Fowler (Tolland, Conn.) is a young leader who, when healthy, showed the ability to compete for wins from the Mile up. Best of the rest include highly touted freshman Mike O Donnell (Methuen, Mass.), milers James Agati (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Alex Levine (Danbury, Conn.), and Virginia transfer Dave Cotton (Madison, Conn.). Development and success in this group will be critical to the success of the Track and Field team, as the distance events will not be nearly as competitive as in the Distance-centric former Big East Conference.

6 Greg Roy Head Coach 29th Overall Season Greg Roy, University of Connecticut men s track and field head coach, enters the season with a skillful group of young returners and a talented incoming class that will continue his winning traditions during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Roy enters his 29th season as the head coach of the men s cross country team and his 25th season at the helm of the track and field program. Year by year, he has been able to elevate a national caliber program to prominence at the conference, regional and national levels. His squads have produced a remarkable record in dual competitions during his tenure, along with ten Big East track and field titles. He has also produced 31 All-Americans during his time at UConn, including 2011 graduate Husky Michael Rutt and 2013 Honorable Mention Jesse Chapman. Throughout his career at UConn, Roy has established a solid foundation for the cross country and track and field programs. With top notch indoor and outdoor facilities, the program has the tools to match the ambitions that Roy and his Huskies set out to reach each year. Under Roy, the Huskies posted a solid campaign with Jake Waruch and Noel James each bringing home indoor and outdoor Big East Crowns. Behind James outdoor and indoor high jump titles and Waruch s decathlon and heptathlon titles, UConn finished fourth at the outdoor conference meet and second at the indoor. Additionally, the team won its seventh consecutive New England Championship. Roy guided the Huskies to one of their best seasons in as UConn earned both Indoor and Outdoor Big East Championships along with claiming the triple crown of the indoor season with the Big East title, New England and IC4A crowns. Roy was named the Northeast Region Indoor Track And Field Coach of the Year after UConn s success. The Huskies saw Mike Rutt earn All-American status in both the indoor and outdoor seasons under Roy s leadership. In addition to Rutt, nine Huskies qualified for the Outdoor NCAA East Regional. Roy and his staff were named the 2011 Big East Indoor and Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year accolades. During the campaign, Roy led his team to six first place finishes, including a fifth straight victory at the New England Indoor Championship and the first ever title for the Huskies at the IC4A Outdoor Championship. Following the 2010 outdoor season, Roy sent three athletes to the NCAA Championship, marking the first time since 2004 that the UConn men s team had more than one athlete at the event, with Michael Rutt, Brian Gagnon and Sean Smith representing the Huskies. For the 16th time, and second straight year, Roy had one of his athletes named the BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Performer, as Smith took home the honors of Outstanding Outdoor Field Performer for his accomplishments during the conference Championship. In , Roy earned the first back-to-back Big East Titles during his tenure as head coach when the track and field team won the 2009 Indoor Big East Championship. For his efforts, Roy and his coaching staff were honored with the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year award for the second season in a row and the sixth time during his coaching career. Roy produced three All-Americans in the indoor season as Michael Rutt and Brian Gagnon earned their second All-America honors in the 800-meter run and Marquis Thomas was named an All-American in the high jump. Roy also took home USTFCCCA honors for the fourth time as he was named the Northeast Indoor Track Coach of the year following his successful 2009 Indoor season. During the season, UConn won the Big East Indoor Championship and fell only 17.5 points shy of taking the Outdoor title as well. During the 2008 seasons, Roy coached six of his athletes to eight Big East individual titles. For his efforts, he was rewarded for the fourth time in his career with the title of Big East Indoor Staff of the Year. UConn continued on its hot streak after the Big East Championships and under the direction of Roy, won its 14th New England Championship in the last 15 years qualifying three of its athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In , UConn was unable to win a Big East Championship but instead won the Sorlein Invitational, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the Harvard Select Meet and the New England Championship. Roy was able to guide Jake Radzevich to two pole vault individual championships, Sean Berg to an individual championship in the heptathlon, Gagnon to the title in the outdoor 800-meter run, Andrew Dubs to an outdoor shot put victory and his 4 x 100m team to a relay championship. During the indoor season, Roy was named New England Coach of the Year. During the season, UConn won its fifth Big East Indoor Championship in school history, fourth under the direction of Roy and the third in the last five years. Roy also guided the Huskies to a pair of first place finishes and a 13-1 overall record during the outdoor season as well. Under Roy s tutelage, seven Huskies were selected to compete in the NCAA Regionals following outstanding performances in the regular season. Senior Joel Lagare, one of the NCAA Regional finalists, finished third in the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second time under Roy. Sean Berg also appeared in his first NCAA Championships as the junior competed in the decathlon and finished in 18th place. In the season, the Huskies saw success across the board while some of the program s greatest talents suffered injuries. Will Thomas advanced to the NCAA Championship in the decathlon for the fourth-consecutive season, but was injured during the competition and could not finish. UConn finished in ninth place at the Big East Indoor Championship, with numerous athletes scoring points in different events. The Huskies also finished in a tie for seventh at the New England Championship. Outdoors, UConn finished fifth at the Big East Championship and third at New Englands. With Roy s assistance, Ellis Gaulden and Thomas both advanced to the NCAA Regionals, with Gaulden competing in the high jump. Roy s squad captured its fourth Big East Indoor Championship in , its second in three years and won an 11th-straight New England Cham Men s Track & Field 5

The Huskies took third at the Outdoor Big East Championship and Paul Pisano became the first-ever three-time javelin champion. Joel Legare earned All-America honors at the outdoor NCAA Championship in the 800-meter. In , Roy produced four All-Americans for the second consecutive year. The indoor and outdoor teams took home second-place at both the Big East Indoor and Outdoor Championship. Indoors, UConn saw its usual success at the New England Championship, bringing home their 10th consecutive title. The season was one of the most successful in Roy s career. His indoor and outdoor squads took home both of the Big East Championships and Roy, for the eighth consecutive year, had his athletes reach All-American status as four athletes were awarded the honor. Dan Wilson garnered All-America status three times to become the first five-time All-American in UConn history. Wilson finished 14th at the NCAA cross country championship, eighth in the indoor mile run and registered the fifth All-America title at the outdoor track and field championship, finishing ninth in the 1,500 meter run. Joe Mendel finished among the top eight in the indoor 400-meter dash to claim the honor, while Paul Pisano and Will Thomas earned their All-America status at the outdoor championship. Pisano earned a 12th place finish in the javelin and Thomas competed in the decathlon, finishing eighth with a then school record 7,630 points. In addition, the team successfully defended the New England Indoor Championship title. Along with a pair of New England titles in , Roy led the Huskies to an overall record of 21-1, a runner-up performance at the BIG EAST Outdoors and a third-place finish at the indoor edition of the meet. During the indoor season, four more All-Americans were added to the school list as the distance medley relay team of Haven Barnes, Elliott Blount, Kevin Jensen and Dan Wilson finished fourth at the NCAA national championship with a time of 9: Roy added to his list of achievements by being selected by his peers as the United States Track Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year following both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The first 14 years as the Head Coach of the Husky track squad began the tradition of excellence that Roy thrives for today. Starting in 1990, the Husky squad began their dominance in both New England and NCAA competition. Over the next eight years, Roy produced his fifth and sixth cross country All-Americans in Andy Ball (1990) and Travis Landreth (1998) as well as mentored four-time All-American hurdler Dudley Dorival who went on to compete in the Olympics for Haiti in 2000 and 2004, weight thrower Steve Santoli (1998) and thrower Ray Wilks (1999). Roy s squads finished in dual meets from 1995 to 1999 for an outstanding.934 win percentage and won their second Indoor BIG EAST Championship. Before the start of the season, Roy had accrued five NCAA Coach of the Year awards (1990-Cross Country, Indoor, Outdoor, Indoor and Indoor) as well as, with his staff, back-toback BIG EAST Staff of the Year awards ( Outdoor, Indoor). In 1990, Roy brought his cross country squad into the national spotlight, finishing 10th in the nation at the NCAA Division I National Championship meet while also winning the IC4A Championship. UConn ended the year ranked No. 12 in the nation. The season marked the beginning of an 11-year winning streak at the New England Championships and in , before winning the Big East Championship, Roy coached his squad to a perfect 15-0 dual meet record. 28 The University of Connecticut men s track and field team completed one of its finest years in program history last season, sweeping both the indoor and outdoor titles in the former Big East Conference. The Huskies also took home championship plaques from the IC4A Indoor Championships and the New England Indoor Championships. Head Coach Greg Roy and his staff were named the indoor and outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year by the Big East conference, marking the fourth time his unit has achieved this feat (2001, 2002, 2011, 2013) Indoor Season Connecticut opened its 2013 campaign at home on Jan. 5 in a winning fashion that would foreshadow the season s success. The Huskies only continued to shine from there, claiming their third crown in as many weeks at the IC4A Championships to conclude an excellent Indoor season. The win represented only the second time Connecticut has taken home the IC4A title, making it a special championship indeed. Clinching the IC4A Championship also gave the Huskies the triple crown of indoor championships, marking only the second time in program history UConn swept the BIG EAST, New England, and IC4A Titles in one season. An important pair of firstplace finishes helped the Huskies achieve this feat, with Alex Bennatan topping the podium in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:49.45 and the 4x800 meter relay squad of Philip Caldwell, Nick O Leary, Paul Desalvo, and Tim Bennatan capturing first with a time of 7: Outdoor Season The Huskies opened their 2013 outdoor season in warmer climates, traveling to Orlando, Florida for the University of central Florida Invitational. Overall, the season was a tremendous one for the Huskies, as they went out with a bang in their fi nal year as a member of the Big East Conference Cross Country Review The University of Connecticut men s cross country team opened the season with back-to-back first place finishes at the six-team UMass Invite on Sept. 14 and the Ted Owen Invitational. The Huskies averaged a time of 19:41.73 in the win at UMass, with freshman Mike O Donnell (Methuen, Mass.) leading the way with a second place finish in his first collegiate race. The victory at the CCSU Ted Owen Invitational 8k resulted from a full team effort, as five Huskies posted top-10 finishes in the triumph. Once again Michael O Donnell led the squad with a third place finish, followed immediately by Alvaro Chavez and David Cotton in fourth and fifth place, respectively. UConn ran into some adversity at the New England championships on Oct. 13 in Boston, Mass. Bryan Fowler led the UConn effort in a time of 25:21 to finish 41st overall, while the team took an 11th place finish out of 41 total schools. The team reset for its first-ever American Athletic Conference Championship located in Madison, Connecticut at Hammonasset State Park. Sophomore captain Bryan Fowler and Michael O Donnell once again teamed up for the Huskies top finishes, earning 12th and 15th, respectively. Louisville claimed the inaugural conference championship. UConn wrapped up the 2013 cross country season with a 19th place finish out of 37 teams at the NCAA Regional Championship in New York on Nov. 15. Freshman Paul Holden earned UConn s top finish in a time of 32:11.5. Stephen Vento (Left) and Alex Levine (Right) at the 2013 American Athletic Conference Championship. As a young team with no seniors, the full squad will return for the 2014 edition of UConn cross country and look to continue competing at the next level Men s Track & Field
