If it only took five games, consider Leah Rush ahead of schedule. Rush changed positions this offseason from the 4/5 to the 3 in OU s motion offense. In the first five games of the season, she averaged 8.8 points per game. Over the last four games that average has jumped to 15 PPG, which is a half point off her season average from She has also improved her 3-point shooting (70 percent) and rebounding (6.3 RPG) during the recent stretch. TIPPING IT OFF The No. 16/17 Oklahoma women s basketball team (8-1) hits the road for another hallowed hall of women s basketball this weekend. Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri State), which ranked 11th in the NCAA in attendance last season, will welcome the Sooners to the John Q. Hammons Center where the average crowd last season was 6,874. The Bears have won nine straight on the home court, dating back to the season, and key returnees Kari Koch and Sarah Klaassen are largely responsible. Koch, a guard, leads the squad in points (23.5) and rebounds (7.0) while making 48 percent of her shots. Klaassen, also a guard, is averaging 10.0 points and pulling down 6.8 boards. Adding to the Bears scoring is freshman guard Kayli Combs who contributes 10.0 points and is shooting 41 percent from behind the arc. Oklahoma arrives on the heels of its first win over a ranked team this season with an victory over No. 22 UCLA. Leading the Sooners to victory were OU s top leading scorers, Courtney Paris, Leah Rush and Erin Higgins. Paris is averaging 21.7 points and 13.1 rebounds per game and tallied her sixth double-double of the season against the Bruins with a 24-point, 22-rebound performance. Rush contributes 11.3 points and 5.0 boards for the Sooner offense while Higgins is averaging 10.1 points per game. Currently, the all-time series is tied, 3-3, with Oklahoma claiming the most recent victory, a win in Norman in Following Saturday night s game, the Sooners will have a week of rest to prepare for finals week and a road trip to Illinois (12/18). After facing Illinois, OU will return home for a battle against 2005 national runner-up Michigan State (12/21) and will close the calendar year with a return trip to No. 21 New Mexico (12/30). ** OU AND MISSOURI STATE SEASON STATISTICS ARE AVAILABLE ON PAGES 23 AND 24 OF THIS RELEASE.

UCLA LEFTOVERS A record-setting performance by freshman Courtney Paris helped Oklahoma overcome UCLA s trio of guards. Paris scored 24 points and set an Oklahoma freshman record with 22 rebounds, leading the No. 16 Sooners to an victory over No. 22 UCLA on Monday night. The previous Oklahoma record for rebounds by a freshman was 21, set by Molly McGuire in a win at Wichita State on Dec. 10, Courtney Paris, who had her sixth double-double, scored Oklahoma s last two baskets and had two defensive rebounds in the final three minutes. Leah Rush finished with 19 points, Erin Higgins had 14 and Kendra Moore added a careerbest 13 for the Sooners. Nikki Blue scored 20 of her 23 points in the second half for UCLA. Noelle Quinn finished with 18 and Lisa Willis 13 for the Bruins. The trio, dubbed the ``triple threat after UCLA s win against Clemson on Saturday, combined to score 43 of UCLA s 50 secondhalf points. Notes *With 24 points, Courtney Paris extended her record for most double-figure games by a freshman to start her career to nine. SIGN OF THE TIMES FOUR Oklahoma is one of four schools UCLA, Texas and N.C. State being the others - with both basketball programs ranked in the current Associated Press polls and a football team in a bowl game. If you narrow the spectrum, OU is the only school with both teams in the top 16 of the basketball polls and a bowl-bound football squad. Currently, the OU men s basketball team is ranked No. 8, while the women s team comes in at No. 16. *Paris blocked a shot against UCLA to improve her season total to 29 swats. She is now tied with Marla Duncan ( ) for the eighth best mark in OU history NUMERICAL ROSTER *Rush scored a season-high 19 points, which she previously set against San Francisco, on 9-13 from the field. *Erin Higgins knocked down four 3-pointers for the third consecutive game and the fifth time in the last seven contests. She has hit a Big 12 best 24 three-pointers this season. *With 37 minutes on the floor, Ashley Paris played a season high 37 minutes. Her previous career-high was 30 minutes against Oral Roberts. 3-4 DEFENSE No. 34 Erin Higgins, an All-Big 12 candidate, is the Sooners best perimeter defender and regularly is given the task of guarding the opponent s best guard. Below are the point totals of the players Higgins has been responsible for this season: Nichole Drummond UW-Milwaukee 12 Juli Collie SMU 2 Abbie Letz New Mexico 9 Anne Strother Connecticut 7 Abbie Emmert Iowa 4 Jennifer Jones San Francisco 2 Adrienne Ross TCU 6 Ashley Davis TCU 0 Lisa Willis UCLA 13 Notes: Higgins switched from Ross to Davis in the second half of the game against TCU. Higgins held Davis scoreless after she hit five first half 3-pointers. The stats against Oral Roberts are not included because OU ran a zone on all but three possessions. STINGY SOONERS OU is holding opponents to a.376 shooting percentage this season, which is 102 points lower than OU s mark of.478. The Sooners have held six of their nine opponents under.400 from the field with a season best mark of.194 against SMU. No. Name Pronunciation Pos. Ht. Yr. The Bears opened the season with a loss at Arkansas State and have won their last three contests. OU will have to pay special attention to veteran senior guard Kari Koch. Koch is averaging 23.5 points per game and pulling down a team-leading seven boards per game. Koch is coming off a 22-point effort in the win over Western Illinois Wednesday night. The Bears are coached by Katie Abrahamson- Henderson, who is in her fourth season with Misosuri State. Saturday will mark the seventh all-time meeting between the programs with the series currently tied at 3-3. Oklahoma won the most recent meeting, a victory in Norman in The two programs have few ties. Freshman Breton Wyett is the lone Oklahoma native on the Bears roster. Wyett, a forward, is from Edmond, Okla., and attended Edmond Memorial High School. The Sooners have no Missouri natives on their current roster. 4 THE MOORE THE BETTER Junior point guard Kendra Moore has set career highs in minutes over the last two games. Those minutes have never been more efficient for the Ardmore native, who has dished out 16 assists and four turnovers, for an all-world 4-to-1 turnover to assist ratio. Moore, whose minutes have increased as a result of Britney Brown s sprained back, has dropped career-bests of eight assists in each of the last two contest, in addition to another personal best of 13 points against No. 22 UCLA. Moore was playing 19+ minutes a game before the recent twogame stretch when starting point guard Britney Brown suffered a sprained back that limited her playing time. The speedster has made the most of the opportunity and stabilized the Sooners, who do not have another true-point guard option after Moore. HIGGINS OFF TO HOT START Erin Higgins has already knocked down 24 three-pointers this season and is shooting 44 (24-54) percent from long distance. The hot start is in contrast to last season when she started the season by making 11 of her first 50 attempts (22 percent). There are a number of factors behind her improved accuracy. Perhaps the biggest effect has been the open space created by OU s inside game. Higgins also believes she has become a more consistent shooter, while Coach Coale credits her improved dribble and drive ability. Higgins has hit a number of bombs off the dribble, a skill she polished during the off-season. Higgins is racing up the OU career 3-point charts and is within striking distance of the record. Currently, she is ranked No. 2 with 158 makes and only trails Etta Maytubby (174). Higgins is also second in career attempts (420) and fourth in percentage (.376). HACK-A-COURTNEY Horned Frog head coach Jeff Mittie admitted that TCU intended to make Courtney Paris earn her points from the free throw line last week. TCU was the first team to use an approach many were expecting to see sooner rather than later. Against TCU, Paris answered with a 6-of-9 first-half effort and a final line of In the last five games Paris is (.658) from the charity stripe. That stretch follows a (.454) mark in the first four games of the season. On the season Paris is shooting.583 (35-60) from the free throw line. NO VACATION Prior to the beginning of the season, OU head coach Sherri Coale regularly called the schedule the toughest in program history. That was before trips to New Mexico and Connecticut appeared on the schedule during the Preseason WNIT. On top of facing seven teams ranked in the current polls (including two games against Texas and Baylor), the road has presented a whole different challenge. The schedule has 10 road trips to school s that were ranked in the top- 25 in national attendance last season, including a pair of trips to New Mexico, which ranked No. 4 last season. Below are the details: Attendance Average Rank School Attendance 2 UConn 12,826 3 Texas Tech 12,601 4 New Mexico 10,674 8 Kansas State 7,606 9 Iowa State 7, Missouri State 6, Baylor 6, Texas 6, Ohio State 5, Nebraska 4,022 PARIS ENTERS BLOCKS RECORD BOOK Courtney Paris swatted one shot against Oral Roberts to improve her season total to 29 blocks, which is tied for the eighth best mark in OU history. Paris is currently tied with Marla Duncan ( ). The complete list is below: LaNae Jones, LaNae Jones, LaNae Jones, LaNae Jones, Angi Guffy, Jo Mosley, Cathy Bassett, Marla Duncan, Courtney Paris, Jacquetta Hurley, BOARD WORK Oklahoma is the top team in the Big 12 in terms of rebounding margin at OU is averaging 45.6 rebounds per game as compared to the opponents In nine games, OU has already topped 50 rebounds on two occasions, an accomplishment achieved only once last season. OU had a season-high 66 boards against SMU and 50 against TCU. CHARITY WORKER Junior Chelsi Welch made her first 25 free throws this season to extend her career best streak to 28 consecutive free throws dating back to the Kansas State game on Feb. 13, She missed her eighth attempt against Oral Roberts but finished the game from the charity stripe. On the season she is with a Big 12 leading.967 percentage For her career, Welch is an.842 ( ) shooter. Her career percentage would top the OU record books, but she is 17 attempts short of the 200 minimum. Welch isn t the only exceptional free throw shooter on the OU squad. Leah Rush is shooting at an.811 ( ) percentage, which is currently the second best mark in OU history. Krista Sanchez, Kendra Moore and Erin Higgins also have career percentages of.700 or better. 5 OUIN THEIR WORDS Connecticut Head Coach Geno Auriemma Courtney (Paris) is not getting a lot of attention from the national media. All they want to talk about is kids that can dunk, but right now she might be the best center in the country. She might be the best freshman out there right now. SMU Head Coach Rhonda Rompola They re not a good team, they re a great team. I know right now they re ranked 25, but that s a team you re going to see jump in the polls. They ll certainly get my vote. Milwaukee Head Coach Sandy Botham She s (Courtney Paris) got great hands. She runs the floor extremely well. She s power, but yet finesse. She can just do so many different things. I swear she s got eyes in the back of her head too. New Mexico Head Coach Don Flanagan We tried everything we could on her (Courtney Paris). Not only was it her ability, but it was her team s ability to get her the ball. She creates problems because she posts up so well. ROAD TRIPPIN The Oklahoma women s basketball team traveled 7,666 miles for its first four road games. The Sooners first road trip was to Albuquerque (1,124 miles, round trip). Then OU made the 3,248 mile round trip journey to Connecticut. Finally, the Sooners hit San Francisco for the Thanksgiving holiday and traveled a total of 3,294 miles. COALE S ONLINE JOURNAL OU head coach Sherri Coale has written an online journal for SoonerSports.com the last three seasons and is doing so again in Her wide ranging entries are some of the most popular pages on the OU website. Additionally, ESPN.com picks up the journals and posts them on its women s basketball page. Coale was a high school English teacher and basketball coach at Norman High School before she took the reigns at OU in FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT The battle for the starting point guard duties began when Dionnah Jackson hung up her jersey at the end of last season. Britney Brown has started the first eight games, but fellow junior Kendra Moore is averaging 5.9 points off the bench. Through the early going the battle is a draw and head coach Sherri Coale is happy about that. So far Moore is the sixth leading scorer and has just 14 turnovers. Brown is averaging 3.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.75 assists per game. The duo has combined to average 9.4 PPG, 575 RPG and 5.8 APG. Jackson averaged 14.6 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 5.7 APG last season as a honorable mention All-American. Coale hopes the duo can combine to fill those numbers. JUMPSTART Oklahoma has raced out of the gates in each of four of its first eight games this season. In the first five minutes of the four games OU outscored its opponents Below is score and time in the four games when the opponent made its second field goal: Opponent Score Time In Half UW Milwaukee :48 SMU :43 New Mexico :36 San Francisco :37 PARIS CLAIMS FIRST ROOKIE AWARD Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) was chosen Big 12 Rookie of the Week and Sophia Young (Baylor) was named Big 12 Women s Basketball Player of the Week by a media voting panel in the league s first selections of the season. Young received her eighth career Big 12 honor, fifth as player of the week. Paris earned her first weekly accolade. Eight Sooners have claimed 12 Big 12 Rookie of the Week awards with the most recent being Leah Rush on Jan Paris led OU to a 3-1 start and the championship game of the Preseason WNIT by averaging 22 points and 13.5 rebounds. She was named to the WNIT All-Tournament Team as she set tourney records with 20 rebounds against SMU and 54 total rebounds. RARE MISSES Leah Rush went 3-8 from the free throw line at New Mexico on Nov. 16. It was just the ninth time in her career that she has missed two free throws in the same game and the first time since Feb. 16, 2005, at Colorado that she had missed consecutive attempts. Rush is a career.811 ( ) shooter from the charity stripe, which ranks as the second best percentage in OU history. RECORD TURNOUT A home-opener record crowd of 5,711 watched the Sooners defeated UW Milwaukee on Friday, Nov. 11. The previous record was 4,360 from the 2001 opener against Sam Houston State. The crowd was also the third largest turnout for a pre-january game. The record for a pre-january Sooner game was set in 2001 when 12, 080 sold out Lloyd Noble for a game with Tennessee. The second best crowd was 1999 game against UConn when 10,713 were in attendance. FRESH STARTS Below are the top five game and 10-game averages for freshman to start their careers. As of Friday, Nov. 18, the brisk sales had reached 3,990, which is a 700 ticket increases over the last 24 days. Season and single game tickets still remain for the entire schedule. Reserved level season tickets are $107 and general admission level are $80. WADSWORTH CALLS IT A CAREER Senior-to-be Antoinette Wadsworth suffered an ACL tear in her right knee during offseason conditioning and will not play this season. The Grand Prairie, Texas native is expected to graduate in May 2006 and will not seek a medical redshirt, effectively ending her collegiate career. Wadsworth suffered a similar injury during the preseason and was sidelined for duration of that season. Wadsworth s finishes her Sooner career with averages of 7.9 minutes per game, 2.1 PPG and 2.5 RPG. PARIS NAMED TO ESPN FRESHMEN TEAM The prognosticators continue to rain praise on Oklahoma freshman Courtney Paris. The latest accolade came from ESPN.com columnist Nancy Lieberman, who named the 6-4 center to her Preseason All-Freshman Team. Paris is joined on the team by Erika Arriaran (Texas), Marissa Coleman (Maryland), Kia Vaughn (Rutgers), Abby Waner (Duke). The former national No. 1 recruit was also named Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year by the league s coaches last month. COALE & COACHES VS. CANCER Sherri Coale will be featured in the intros to the 2005 Coaches vs. Cancer men s and women s games on Dec. 5 and 6 at 6 p.m. Central. Coale, who penned an online journal for SoonerSports.com and ESPN.com about the cancer battle of former player Jamie Talbert, spoke with producers about her relationship and support for the Sooner alum. Talbert recently completed chemotherapy for ovarian cancer and is in the early stages of recovery. Sooners have claimed the regular season freshman of the year award on two occasions. LaNeishea Caufield won after the season, while current Sooner Chelsi Welch nabbed a share of the award after the campaign. It is the first preseason Big 12 honor of Rush s career. Last season she averaged 15.5 points per game, fourth best among returning Big 12 players, while claiming second team All-Big 12 honors. The All-America candidate also ranked 15th in rebounds (6.3 ppg) and fourth in free throw percentage (.847).

7 COALE S CLASS RANKS IN TOP 10 AGAIN One year after signing the consensus No.1 recruit and landing the nation s top recruiting class Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale repeated her efforts by signing a five-player recruiting class that ranks with the best in the country. The potential starting five consists of point guard Jenna Plumley, shooting guard Rose Hammond, small forward Nyeshia Stevenson (pronounced Nie- ee -SHA), power forward Amanda Thompson and Abi Olajuwon (pronounced Abee) turned in their National Letters of Intent and will be eligible to compete for OU during the academic year. In terms of the classes we ve brought in, I think it s the most complete because we have a talented player at every position, said Coale. You can take these five girls and have a very good team. I can t see any way this is not a top 10 class. Coale s prediction that this was a top-10 class was backed up by the Blue Star report, which ranked the Sooners No. 9 nationally on Wednesday and moved them up to No. 6 after Olajuwon joined the class on Thursday. Plumley, a 5-4 traditional point guard out of Red Rock, Okla., became an Oklahoma legend as a freshman when she led Frontier High School to the Big House and claimed MVP honors while guiding her team to the state championship. Since then she has won another Class A state title (2005) and led Frontier to a 55-6 record, all while averaging 20.5 points and 8.5 assists during the last two seasons. Jenna smells where the basketball is supposed to go, said Coale. I have watched her play for years as she has grown up at Frontier and she is the best post feeder I ve seen in a long, long time. You are just blown away at the things she can do. Plumley took her game to a national level this past summer when she led the Oklahoma Pride to the Junior Olympic National Championship. The two-time Oklahoman Super Five athlete claimed another MVP honor by taking top honors at the national tournament. Jenna is a dynamo, said Frontier head coach Clay Stephens. She is a coach s dream at the point because she knows where everyone is supposed to be on the court in any given situation. Hammond will team Plumley in the back court, much like the duo did this past summer. Hammond was also a member of the Junior National Championship team. The Depew High School product is ranked No. 73 among national recruits and No. 15 at the off-guard position according to the All Star Girls Report. Rose is the kind of kid that when you watch her play, you don t ever think she s playing very hard because it looks so easy, said Coale. She has great quickness and is smooth and fluid. I think she can be very much like LeNeishea Caulfield in that there won t be very much she can t do on either end of the floor. The versatile talent averaged 23 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists as a junior at Depew. Her in-state efforts have led to the Oklahoman naming her to the Super Five Team in 2004 and Rose is the best combination athlete and overall-skilled basketball player I have ever coached, said Depew head coach Paul Pool. She has the quickness to steal the ball on defense at any time and can finish at the basket when you don t think she can. That is what makes her so tough. Taking the spot of small forward in the recruiting class is Stevenson, who will bring rare athletic ability to the Norman next season. The Little Rock native was named the Arkansas RECRUITING CLASS Rose Hammond 5-9 Guard Depew, Okla. Depew HS Note: Versatile athlete with knack for scoring in traffic. Abi Olajuwon 6-3 Center Sherman Oaks, Calif. Marlborough School Note: Tremendous size, hands and genes on the latest post player to sign with Oklahoma. Jenna Plumley 5-4 Point Guard Red Rock, Okla. Frontier HS Note: Led Frontier to Oklahoma state titles two of the last three years. Nyeshia Stevenson 6-1 Forward Little Rock, Ark. McCellan HS Note: One of the best athletes in the country, great instincts with game on the line. Democrat-Gazette Female Athlete of the Year as a junior in 2004 when she earned all-state honors in basketball, volleyball and track and field. Nyeshia is a special athlete, truly gifted, said Coale. She is very explosive and a tremendous jumper. Nyeshia picks things up quickly, and she has that special knack of wanting the ball late in the games. I don t know if you can teach that. She has a chance to really be an impact player because of her mental makeup and athletic ability. The 6-1 forward, who can grab the rim with two hands, averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds during her junior campaign. The most nationally renowned player in the class is Thompson, who is ranked as high as No. 5 by national recruiting services. The Chicago native is a gritty power forward, who has the skills to dominate the block and run a point-forward role similar to that fulfilled by Sooner legend Dionnah Jackson. Amanda Thompson is one of those rare finds, said Coale. She is an athlete who has two extraordinary skills, one being the ability to block shots, which is as much a timing issue as it is a size issue. She really knows when to go. Her second gift is her vision. She is a tremendous passer. She delivers the basketball in similar fashion to Stacey Dales. Thompson isn t short on the offensive end, where she averaged 16.9 points to go along with 11 rebounds and four steals as junior. The five-star recruit spent a portion of her summer at the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival where she led her team to a gold medal while tallying 9.4 PPG and 7.8 RPG. With the added international experience, Thompson hopes to help Whitney Young High School improve upon its record of 28-2 and state runner-up finish. Amanda is the best player I have coached in many ways, but what really sets her apart is her personal drive to be the best, said Whitney Young head coach Corry Irvin. I believe her ability to get to the basket and free up other players is her biggest asset. She can free up the lane for the Paris twins, as well as open up outside shots for OU s shooters. Olajuwon, who is ranked as high as No. 22 nationally, signed her national letter of intent on Thursday morning. The 6-3 center, who is the daughter of NBA legend and Houston graduate Hakeem Olajuwon, averaged 15.9 points and 14.4 rebounds as a junior at Marlborough School. She has led Marlborough to three consecutive state titles, while garnering All-California Interscholastic Federation honors the last two seasons. Based on the number of signees, the OU women s basketball team is projected to field a roster of 14 players next season.

HEAD COACH SHERRI COALE Sherri Coale enters her 10th season with just as much determination, energy and willpower as the first day she took the head coaching job at the University of Oklahoma. Coale s work ethic doesn t allow her to relax or be content with the accomplishments she has already achieved. Countless coaches would be very comfortable after nine seasons on the job and after participating in seven straight postseason tournaments, including an NCAA Final Four. They would feel pleased about rebuilding a program to the point of three Big 12 regular season titles, two Big 12 Tournament crowns and an average of 24 wins per season over the last six years. Not Coale. Coale knew she had a challenge when she arrived on campus in April 1996 and was given the job of rebuilding the OU program that had been an afterthought for many years. She also knew she would have the opportunity to mold the program from the ground up and build a rock-solid foundation based on responsibility and accountability. That she has done. When she first arrived, Coale told all who would listen that she would accomplish her goal of rebuilding the OU program. Maybe OU fans should have realized how bright the future was going to be when, after just two years on the job, Coale took a team to the WNIT ( ). That team The Coale File was always challenged, as the tallest player on the court was 5-10, but the team played hard and with tremendous Personal heart. The Sooners have appeared on the front cover of the USA Today sports section, been showcased on ESPN and featured in Sports Illustrated. When you consider that Coale s first team (1997) won just five games all season and the 2002 club won that many games in the NCAA Tournament, it is apparent how far OU has come with Coale at the helm.
