THE GAME: The Broncos (4-1) return to Taco Bell Arena after a three-game road stint at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach last week to host Loyola Marymount (3-1), Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. Boise State will host five of its seven remaining nonconference games at home. 2. SERIES WITH LMU: Boise State holds a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams. The Broncos won the matchup last season at LMU in an victory on Dec. 5, Chandler Hutchison (17 points) and Justinian Jessup (13 points) were the top Bronco scorers in that game. 3. RESILIENT BUNCH: The Broncos rallied back from a 24-point deficit in the second half of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach Championship game against Iowa State (Nov. 19) to make it a four-point game (64-60) with 2:34 to play, but the Cyclones did just enough to hang on to their lead. Boise State cut the deficit to four points on two occasions in the second half (2:34 and 1:38 remaining), but the Cyclones Donovan Jackson answered with a basket each time. 4. CRASH THE GLASS: Both individually and as a team, there were several standout efforts on the glass the last week in Myrtle Beach. Hutchison pulled down 18 rebounds against Illinois State the second most by an individual in tournament history and the team outrebounded the Redbirds for the biggest rebounding margin in nearly five years. Jessup also grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against Iowa State. 5. ALL ABOUT THE 3-POINTER: The Broncos have made double-digit 3-pointers in four of five games. The last time the program made double-digit threes in four of five games was the first five games of the season. 6 Boise State Men s Basketball Game Notes IT STARTS AT THE TOP LEON RICE HEAD COACH 20 WINS AGAIN: Boise State hit the 20-win plateau for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time in Leon Rice s seven years last season. It is the first time in school history the Broncos have won 20 games in five consecutive seasons. Head coach Bobby Dye and guard Chris Childs led the Broncos to at least 20 wins in , and , the only previous three-year run. The Broncos had just seven 20-win campaigns since joining Division I before Rice took over. MW COACH OF THE YEAR: Leon Rice was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year, in a vote of fellow conference coaches. It was the sixth time a Boise State coach has been named conference coach of the year and Rice is the fourth different Bronco head man to earn the honor. He was also selected coach of the year in a separate vote by MW media members. District VIII encompasses all Division I schools in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and Montana. Rice is the first Boise State head coach to earn the distinction from the USBWA. Greg Graham earned the NABC District 13 Coach of the Year Award in NABC districts are determined by conference. SECOND IN WINS: Rice s 146 wins as Boise State s head coach are the second most in program history. He now only trails Bobby Dye (212) as the most winningest coach in school history. 200 GAMES: Leon Rice coached his 200th game at Boise State Nov. 18, 2016, the third head coach to reach 200 games in program history, joining Bobby Dye and Greg Graham. Rice s 123 wins are the most by a Bronco head coach in his first 200 games. 100 WINS: Leon Rice picked up his 100th win as Boise State s head coach, March 4, 2015, at San José State. Rice became the fourth Bronco head coach to reach 100 wins at the school and the first to do so in just five seasons. He accomplished the feat in his 161st game at the helm. Bobby Dye ( ) is the fastest to 100 wins, earning the milestone victory in his 160th game as head coach. Rod Jensen ( ) and Greg Graham ( ) also won 100 games at Boise State, reaching the triple digits in their 182nd and 178th games, respectively. UPPING THE OFFENSE: Boise State has been renowned for its offensive prowess ever since Leon Rice Preseason National Coach of the Year (Jeff Goodman, ESPN.com) Mountain West Coach of the Year USBWA District VIII COY Five Consecutive 20-Win Seasons 6 arrived. In Rice s first seven seasons, the Broncos have led their conference in scoring three times, including pacing the Mountain West twice. In , the Broncos hit a Riceera high with 76.2 points per game, the second-highest in the last 38 years at Boise State (81.4 in ). BRONCOS IN THE PROS: Since Leon Rice took over as head coach at Boise State, 15 Broncos have gone on to professional basketball careers. James Webb III became the program s first early entrant in the NBA Draft. Webb was signed by the Philadelphia 76ers and spent the entire preseason on the roster. He is currently with Philadelphia s NBA D-League affiliate in Delaware. Anthony Drmic was the NBL (Asutralia) Rookie of the Year. TAKING CHARITY: Boise State has been one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country, under Leon Rice. The Broncos have ranked in the top 25 nationally twice under Rice, including when Boise State shot 74.9 percent from the stripe to set a single-season school record. The mark betterd the team s 74.7 clip. Four of the top six single-season free throw percentages in school history have been established during Rice s tenure as head coach. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: Boise State has played 25 games against top-25 opponents since Leon Rice took over as head coach. The Broncos played 20 ranked teams in the 25 years prior to Rice s arrival. GETTING DEFENSIVE: Boise State held a schoolrecord nine opponents to fewer than 50 points in , including five in its last 11 games. The Broncos limited a school-record six conference foes to fewer than 50 points, including twice doing so to consecutive opponents. The last time the Broncos held consecutive conference opponents in the 40s was Boise State has held an opponent under 50 points 17 times in the Leon Rice era. The Broncos are 16-1 overall in those games. BRONCO 3-POINT BARRAGE: With Leon Rice at the helm, Boise State has become one of the top threepoint shooting teams in the country in both volume and percentage. The Broncos made a school-record 297 triples,shooting at a 39.2 percent clip. Boise State has made at least 227 three-pointers in each of Rice s first six seasons, claiming seven of the top 10 single-season marks in school history. NOVEMBER SUCCESS: Boise State is in the month of November, under eighth-year head coach Leon Rice. The Broncos are 23-0 at Taco Bell Arena in such games. They Said It... 8 Boise State Men s Basketball Game Notes EMPHASIZING THE 3-POINT LINE: Boise State has maintained its emphasis on defending the 3-point line. Bronco opponents have only made 26- of-106 threes at a 24.5 percent clip, ranking Boise State No. 23 in the nation and No. 2 in the Mountain West in the category. GETTING TO THE CHARITY STRIPE: The Blue and Orange got to the line 35 times against the Redbirds on Friday, making 26. They made it to the line 35 times or more in four games last season. SUCCESS IN NOVEMBER: November has been the Broncos most successful month of the season in head Leon Rice s eight years at the helm. Boise State is under his watch in games played in the opening month of the season. In addition, the Broncos are 23-0 at Taco Bell Arena in November games. END OF A LONG ROAD: Not only did Boise State play five games in 10 days to open , but the Broncos also logged over 5,000 miles of total travel in the making the trip to Myrtle Beach last week. Boise State will play five of its last seven nonconference games at home with only trips to Oregon and SMU remaining. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR HUTCH: Hutchison recorded the first double-double of the season last Friday with 19 points and 18 rebounds against Illinois State. The double-double was the 12th of his career, while the 18 rebounds was also a career high and the second-most individual rebounds in one game in Puerto Rico Tip-Off history. HOBBS CONTINUES TO STEP UP: Alex Hobbs was a double-digit scorer for the fifth-straight game last week against Iowa State. Dating back to last season, he has scored double-digit points in nine of 11 games. The sophomore currently leads the Broncos in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game. FAST START: After not scoring when the first media timeout hit on Thursday against UTEP, the Broncos responded with a quick 10-4 to start the game last Friday against Illinois State, building a lead that they never relinquished. The 24-point lead at halftime was the largest Bronco lead after 20 minutes of play since last season when Boise State held a advantage (26-point lead) against Cal State Northridge on Dec. 16, The Blue and Orange led by as many as 33 points late in the second half. BOOSTED BY THE BENCH: Boise State received 23 points from its bench last Thursday against UTEP, accounting for just under 40 percent of the team s scoring. Dickinson (13), Jessup (6), Robin Jorch (2) and David Wacker (2) all provided a huge lift and made their mark on the game. #BRONCOHOOPS NOTES to National Letters of Intent for the season. The Broncos were selected to the National Invitation Tournament, advancing to the second round. BRONCOS IN THE NIT: 2017 marked Boise State s fifth trip to the NIT in program history, previously earning berths in 1987, 1989, 1991 and The Broncos are 4-5 all-time in the tournament, last season was the third time they have reached the round of 16. POSTSEASON APPEARANCES: With a berth in the NIT, Boise State made its 14th postseason appearance in program history and fourth in Leon Rice s seven years as head coach (two NCAA Tournaments, one NIT and one CBI). RECORD PERFORMANCE: Junior Chandler Hutchison scored 34 points in Boise State s firstround NIT win at Utah. Hutchison s career-high scoring performance was the most points by a Bronco in a postseason game in school history. WINNING 20: Boise State recorded another 20- win season, its sixth in leon Rice s seven seasons and fifth in a row. Boise State is one of 28 schools nationally with five-straight 20-win seasons. BREAK OUT THE BROOM: Boise State swept seven of its 10 regular-season conference series, including five two-game series. The Broncos earned two wins against Air Force, Colorado State, San Jose State, Utah State and Wyoming, while earning a win in their lone regular-season meeting against San Diego State (home) and UNLV (road). RECRUITING CLASS: Boise State men s basketball added another strong recruiting class, as head coach Leon Rice announced the signing of four incoming freshmen and one junior college transfer BIG WIN: Boise State closed the regular season with a victory at Air Force (March 4). The 28-point win is Boise State s widest margin of victory in a conference road game since Feb. 26, 2004, winning at SMU (39 points). WELCOME BACK: Hutchison declared for the NBA Draft without hiring an agent following his breakout junior season. After attending private workouts with NBA teams, Hutchison announced he would withdraw from the draft and return to Boise State for his senior season. At the time he said, I am extremely grateful for the opportunities, interest and feedback I received from many NBA teams. I have decided to put my focus back on winning a Mountain West Championship. Everything I learned the last month will help me be a better player, teammate and future draft pick. 20/10 VISION: Hutchison recorded six games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds last season. The last time a Bronco had more than three 20-point, 10-rebound games in a season was , when Reggie Larry recorded nine. Hutchison is the second Bronco in the past 30 seasons, to record six 20-and-10 games. He was the only player in the MW with more than three last season. A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN: In conference games last season, Chandler Hutchison averaged 16.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game, leading Boise State in each category and pacing the Broncos to a third-place finish with a 12-6 record. Hutchison ranked fifth in the conference in scoring, sixth in rebounding and sixth in assists. He was the only player in the Mountain West to rank in the top 10 of each category. JOIN THE CLUB: Hutchison scored 557 points on the season, the 20th 500-point season in Boise State history and tied for No. 8 on the all-time single-season scoring list. Hutchison also grabbed 250 rebounds, registering the second 500-point, 250-rebound season in program history. He is the first player in program history to rack up at least 500 points, 200 rebounds and 75 assists in one season. TAKING CHARGE: Hutchison scored in double figures 29 times last season, including 17 Mountain West games. Hutchison hit double digits nine times in his first two seasons combined. He led Boise State in scoring 18 times as a junior, he did so just once during his first two seasons. His 557 points last season (32 games) eclipse the 302 he scored in his first two seasons combined (60 games). ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Hutchison was named to the 2017 Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach All-Tournament Team. His best performance at Coastal Carolina came in the semifinals against Illinois State when he scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the 12th double-double of his career. Last season he was named to the 2016 Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team. Hutchison averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds during three games at the tournament. 11 Notes Game 6 ALEX HOBBS Sophomore La Porte HS La Porte, Texas SUPER SOPHOMORES NATURAL SCORING ABILITY HOT START: Alex Hobbs led the way with 21 points on 100 percent shooting from the field in going 9-for-9 including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc - to open the season against Eastern Oregon at home on Nov. 12. The flawless effort from the field made him just the third Bronco in school history to finish a game with a perfect field goal percentage with at least nine shot attempts. He is now linked with Tanoka Beard (10-10 / March 3, 1991) and Mark Sanchez (9-9 / Nov. 14, 2008) in the Boise State record book. DOUBLE-DIGIT SCORER: The sophomore is the only Bronco that has scored in double digits all five games. Dating back to last season, Hobbs has scored in double figures in nine of his last 11 games. HUGE JUMP: Hobbs scored 118 points while playing in 26 games last season. Just five games into the campaign, he already has 70 points and leads the team with 14.0 points per game. Hobbs has also shown his ability to distribute the basketball, as he is second on the team averaging 3.4 assists per game. MODEL OF EFFICIENCY: Hobbs is currently shooting 58.3 percent from the field (28-of- 48), good for No. 6 in the Mountain West so far this season. He also has been exception from the 3-point line (6-of-12, 50%) and the free throw line (8-of-9, 89%). ELITE SCORER: Alex Hobbs scored 2,800 points in his high school career, including 988 points as a senior. Hobbs averaged 30.9 points per game in his final prep campaign, ranking No. 24 nationally according to MaxPreps. BURST OFF THE BENCH JUSTINIAN JESSUP Sophomore Longmont HS Longmont, Colo. NEW ROLE, SAME ATTITUDE: Justinian Jessup started 31 games last season, and this year the sophomore is thriving as the Broncos first option off the bench, as he is averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, ranking third and second on the team, respectively. CRASHING THE BOARDS: Along with Hutchison, Jessup is one of Boise State s best rebounding guards. The sophomore grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against Iowa State in 32 minutes of play. He has grabbed seven or more rebounds in three of five games this season. STILL ELITE FROM THREE: Jessup made 50 three-pointers as a freshman, the second most triples by a freshman in Boise State history. He fell shy of only Anthony Drmic (57), and passed Bronco legends such as Nick Duncan (41) and Coby Karl (49). He picked up right where he left off last season and has already cashed in 15 3-pointers while shooting an efficient 45.5 percent (15-of-33) from distance. He is tied for fourth in the Mountain West for made 3-pointers per game at 3.0. QUICK HANDS: Jessup has consitently shown an ability to get into passing lanes and use his quick hands to come up with steals. He currently is averaging 1.8 steals per game, which ranks second on the team and eighth in the conference. CAREER DAY AGAINST SUU: The Longmont, Colo., native poured in a career-high 22 points against Southern Utah (Nov. 12) thanks to 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. 12 Boise State Men s Basketball Game Notes CHRISTIAN SENGFELDER Senior Fordham ( ) Leverkusen, Germany SENIOR TRANSFERS THREE-YEAR STARTER AT FORDHAM FITTING RIGHT IN: Sengfelder has been excellent in his first five games as a Bronco, averaging 13.4 points (2nd on team) and 4.6 rebounds (4th on team) per game. He recently poured in a season-high 20 points against Iowa State in the championship game at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach. The 20 points is the most for the Fordham graduate transfer since scoring 21 last season against Dayton on Jan. 31, 2017 for his former team ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Sengfelder averaged 12.7 points 3.7 rebounds per game at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach, earning him all-tournament honors along with teammate Chandler Hutchison. He and Hutchison were joined by Illinois State s Keyshawn Evans, and Iowa State s Nick Weiler-Babb and Donovan Jackson on the five-player team. FROM THE START: Christian Sengfelder started all 93 games he played in his three seasons at Fordham. Sengfelder recorded a double-figure scoring average each of his three seasons. He has started all five games here at Boise State, as well. 1,000 : Christian Sengfelder comes to Boise State having already scored 1,000 points at the Division I level. Sengfelder s 1,126 points are the most career points of any active Bronco. GOOD IN THE CLASSROOM: Christian Sengfelder earned his bachelor s degree in psychology from Fordham after just three years. Sengfelder was named CoSIDA Academic All-District 1 First Team as a junior. ACCUSTOMED TO SUCCESS LEXUS WILLIAMS Redshirt Senior Valparaiso ( ) Chicago, Ill. INSTANT LEADERSHIP: Lexus Williams joins the Broncos as a redshirt senior with experience as a starting point guard for a winning program. Williams has jumped right into a leadership role with Boise State in summer workouts. GETTING THE HANG: After scoring just six points over the course of the first three games, Williams has found his rhythm with 25 points in the last two contests. He notched a season-high 16 points against Iowa State, making 4-of-9 3-pointers. The 16 points is the third-highest scoring game for Williams in his collegiate career. The only two higher point totals came while playing for Valparaiso when he scored 19 against Wright State (Feb. 24, 2017) and 22 against Detroit (Jan. 15, 2014) as a freshman. SWIPE: Williams averaged 1.1 steals per game during his career at Valparaiso. Williams 46 takeaways last season would be the most by a Bronco since fellow Chicago native Derrick Marks recorded 59 in The Chicago native already has a team-high nine steals through five games for Boise State. The 1.8 steals per game ranks him sixth in the Mountain West. WORKING BACK: He missed the season due to a preseason knee injury and was limited to 16 games in after a setback in his recovery. Williams began returning to form last season, playing 22.9 minutes per game and helping Valparaiso to a 24-9 record and a berth in the NIT. GOOD START AT VALPO: Williams broke on to the college basketball scene as a freshman, averaging 6.5 points, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game. SEASON SAVER: With Boise State trailing by five and just 11 minutes left in its first round NIT game against Utah last season, freshman Marcus Dickinson sparked a game-winning, seasonextending run. Dickinson scored six consecutive Bronco points in two minutes, then with 4:55 to play hit a game-tying three-pointer. His free throw with 45 seconds remaining capped a 16-1 run and put the Broncos ahead by 10. Dickinson s 12 points against Utah accounted for 14.1 percent of his scoring output last season. ZACH HANEY STEADY IN THE PAINT: Haney has been the starting big for the Broncos in the team s first five games, and he has been reliable in averaging 4.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. pthe redshirt sophomore has also been an ironman of sorts so far in his three seasons as Bronco. COUNT ON IT: Zach Haney scored in 27 of the 30 games he has played last season, including at least six points 12 times. Haney averaged 13.7 points and 10.9 rebounds per 40 minutes. ROBIN JORCH OFFENSIVE REBOUNDER: Robin Jorch has 47 offensive rebounds in his career, accounting for 61.8 percent of his career boards.
