The Huskies and Pumas have met twice previously, but not since 1970, with each school winning one meeting. NIU won the most recent meeting, , in DeKalb on Dec. 21, Travon Baker was named to the All-Tournament Team at the NIU Invitational. Baker averaged 9.3 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game in the tournament. Sophomore Darrell Bowie leads NIU in scoring (9.5 points per game) and rebounding (5.8 per game). On Wednesday, Nov. 20, Jordan Threloff was named the Mid-American Conference s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. 3 WHAT S TRENDING Sunday s contest will be the final game of NIU s season-opening five-game homestand. Darrell Bowie scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds last time out against Milwaukee (Nov. 17). Jordan Threloff is shooting 66.7 percent from the field, tied for the second-best mark in the Mid-American Conference. Travon Baker has a 3.25 assist/turnover ratio, third-best in the conference, and is averaging 3.25 assists per game, 11th in the MAC. Aaron Armstead is shooting 86.7 percent from the free-throw line, ranking seventh in the MAC. Daveon Balls has scored in double figures twice in the first four games this season. He scored in double figures once all of last year. A LOOK AT THE SEASON NIU returns eight letterwinners and four starters from a season ago. The Huskies will play their first five games at home, with their first road game coming on Nov. 30 at Nebraska. NIU welcomes seven newcomers this season, including DeKalb native Jordan Threloff who transferred to NIU from Illinois State. The Mid-American Conference has added a pair of league games to the slate this season. The MAC will play an 18-game conference schedule for the first time since The Huskies will play seven opponents that appeared in the postseason a year ago, including three NCAA Tournament teams (Akron, Iowa State and James Madison), Kent State (CIT), UMass (NIT), Ohio (NIT) and Western Michigan (CBI) also played in the postseason last year. ABOUT SAINT JOSEPH S The Pumas enter the weekend with a 1-2 record and will face Walsh University (Ohio) on Saturday before traveling to DeKalb on Sunday. Each of Saint Joseph s first two games of the season went to double overtime. The Pumas fell to Cedarville University (Ohio), , before defeating Central State, In part due to the two double overtime games, the Pumas are averaging points per game and are allowing points per contest. Cameron Vines leads Saint Joseph s in scoring at 28.7 points per game, Jon Smith is also averaging better than 20 points per contest (22.7). Tom Church is in his first season as head coach at Saint Joseph s, he spent the previous three seasons as an assistant at Florida Southern College. THE ALL-TIME SERIES The Huskies and Pumas have met twice previously, but not since 1970, with each school winning one meeting. NIU won the most recent meeting, , in DeKalb on Dec. 21, The two schools also met during the season in the Bloomington (Ill.) Invitational. Saint Joseph s defeated NIU, 45-25, in that first meeting. BAKER NAMED TO NIU INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Travon Baker was named to the All-Tournament Team at the NIU Invitational. Baker averaged 9.3 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game in the tournament. Baker posted a 4:1 assist/turnover ratio in the tournament and also tied a career-high with 17 points in the tournament opener against James Madison. Joining Baker on the All-Tournament team were Jordan Aaron (Milwaukee), Matt Tiby (Milwaukee), Andrey Semenov (James Madison) and Ron Curry (James Madison). NIU INVITATIONAL RECAP The Huskies finished the NIU Invitational with a 1-2 record. Milwaukee won the tournament with a perfect 3-0 mark; James Madison went 2-1 while San Jose State went 0-3. NIU was edged in the tournament opener by James Madison, Travon Baker tied a career-high with 17 points and Aaron Armstead added 16 points against the Dukes. NIU pulled within two on five different occasions in the second half but was unable to take a second half lead. The Huskies earned their first win of the season in the middle game of the tournament, defeating San Jose State, Jordan Threloff had a career-best 17 points and Daveon Balls netted a career-high 15 in the win. Both Threloff and Balls came off the bench to spark the Huskies as the NIU bench scored 45 of its 60 points. Milwaukee defeated NIU, 82-69, to close the tournament. Darrell Bowie registered a career-high 19 points against the Panthers. LEADING THE WAY Sophomore Darrell Bowie leads NIU in scoring (9.5 points per game) and rebounding (5.8 per game). Last time out against Milwaukee (Nov. 17), Bowie recorded new career highs in both points (19) and rebounds (8). Bowie s 5.8 rebounds per contest currently ranks 10th in the MAC. Bowie has gone to the free-throw line 21 times this season, most among all Huskies. He made seven of 11 attempts from the line against Milwaukee (Nov. 17), both figures were career highs. A SCORING RHYTHM Sophomore Daveon Balls has scored in double figures twice this season after reaching the double figure plateau just one as a freshman a year ago. Balls scored 13 points in the season opener against Nebraska Omaha (Nov. 8), then a career-high, before bettering that mark with 15 points against San Jose State (Nov. 16). Balls ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.3 points per contest. He is shooting 48.3 percent from the field, best among NIU s perimeter players this season. THRELOFF EARNS ACADEMIC HONOR On Wednesday, Nov. 20, Jordan Threloff was named the Mid-American Conference s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The award is voted on by a group of faculty athletic representatives from conference schools. Threloff, a sociology major with a 4.0 GPA, averaged 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last weekend in the NIU Invitational. Threloff shot 58.8 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the line in the tournament. In the middle game of the tournament, Threloff netted a new career-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a win over San Jose State. HUSKIE DEBUTS Six players (Aaric Armstead, Aaron Armstead, Dontel Highsmith, Marin Maric, Pete Rakocevic and Jordan Threloff) made their NIU debut in the season opener against Nebraska Omaha (Nov. 8). Three of those players (Aaric Armstead, Highsmith and Maric) were also making their collegiate debut. Two of those debuts came in a starting role, Rakocevic scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds while Highsmith scored two points and had three rebounds in a starting role. A DeKalb native, Threloff scored nine points, on 4-of-4 shooting, and grabbed three rebounds in his first game as a Huskie. DOWN TO THE WIRE Prior to a 13-point loss to Milwaukee last time out, NIU s previous five games, including two last season, were decided by a total of 11 points. NIU s first three games of this season were decided by eight points, including a onepoint win over San Jose State (60-59) and a two-point loss to Nebraska Omaha (68-66).. WHAT S BACK FOR NIU Returning eight letterwinners and four starters from last season, NIU has its most experienced returning group of Mark Montgomery s tenure. The Huskies returning 72.1 percent of their minutes played from a season ago, along with 63.4 percent of their scoring, 72.5 percent of their rebounds, 80.7 percent of their assists, 50.9 percent of their blocked shots and 70.9 percent of their steals. HOME COOKING Northern Illinois will play its first five games at home at the NIU Convocation Center. This marked the first season that NIU opened at home since , when Northwestern visited DeKalb on the opening night of the season. NIU closes the five-game stretch with Sunday s games against Saint Joseph s (Ind.). The Huskies will make their first road trip of the season on Nov. 30 when they visit Nebraska. This season marks the first time NIU has played its first five games at home since THRELOFF ELIGIBLE IMMEDIATELY Redshirt junior center Jordan Threloff is eligible to play immediately this season after being granted a legislative relief waiver by the NCAA. Threloff played two seasons at Illinois State, appearing in 51 games for the Redbirds, averaging 2.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Including this season, Threloff will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. NIU s two other Division I transfers, Anthony Johnson (Purdue) and Michael Orris (Kan-

5 sas State), will sit out this season following their transfers. TWO HUSKIES COMPETE INTERNATIONALLY Two Huskies, Aksel Bolin and Marin Maric, represented their countries in international competition this past summer. Bolin played for Norway at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, while Maric competed for Croatia at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. Bolin appeared in all eight tournament games for Norway, averaging 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest. He shot 38 percent from the field (16-of-42) while dishing out 14 assists and recording a team-high tying 10 steals. Bolin and the Norwegians finished 13th in the 24-team field. Maric played in all eight games for Croatia, averaging 6.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest while shooting 55.6 percent from the floor. Maric and the Croatians finished eighth in the 16-team field was the second consecutive summer that Huskie basketball was represented internationally. In 2012, former Huskie Richard Oruche ( ) represented Nigeria at the London Olympic Games. NEW LOOK STAFF Following the departure of assistant coach Todd Townsend to Drake, NIU head coach Mark Montgomery elevated Jason Larson to assistant coach. Larson had spent the previous two seasons at Director of Basketball Operations. Video coordinator Chad Pecka was promoted into Larson s role and NIU added Brandon Watkins, a former All-Big Ten honoree at Penn State, as a graduate assistant. OF NOTE NIU has not won a game during Mark Montgomery s tenure when it has allowed 70-or-more points. In nine of NIU s 11 victories over the past two-plus seasons the Huskies have had a better field goal percentage than their opponent. The Huskies have also outrebounded their opponents in 10 of those 11 wins. The team with the better free throw shooting percentage has won all four of NIU s games this season. THE PRESEASON PICKS The Mid-American Conference released its Men s Basketball Preseason Poll on Oct. 29, the poll was selected by a 25-member MAC new media panel. In the MAC West Division, the panel selected Toledo as the favorite, followed by, 2) Western Michigan, 3) Eastern Michigan, 4) Ball State, 5) Central Michigan and 6) NIU. In the MAC East Division, the panel selected Akron as the favorite, followed by, 2) Buffalo, 3) Ohio, 4) Kent State, 5) Miami and 6) Bowling Green. The preseason All-MAC West team is made up of: Rian Pearson (Toledo), Julius Brown (Toledo), Shayne Whittington (Western Michigan), Majok Majok (Ball State) and Glenn Bryant (Eastern Michigan). The preseason All-MAC East team is made up of: Javon McCrea (Buffalo), Demetrius Treadwell (Akron), Will Felder (Miami), Will Regan (Buffalo) and Quincy Diggs (Akron). BAND OF BROTHERS Already boasting one pair of brothers, junior twins Keith and Kevin Gray, NIU added a second set of brothers this season in Aaron and Aaric Armstead. Aaron and Aaric are one year apart, with Aaron being the older of the pair. The Armsteads won a state championship in 2011 at Hales Franciscan in Chicago. Aaron then went on to play one season at UW Green Bay before spending last season at San Jose (Calif.) City College. Aaric spent his senior year of high school at Bullard HS in Fresno, Calif., followed by a year at La Jolla Prep in San Diego, Calif. UCLA also has a pair of brothers on its roster in twins David and Travis Wear along with Kory and Bryce Alford, the son s of head coach Steve Alford SEASON IN REVIEW NIU finished the season with a 5-25 record, 3-13 in Mid-American Conference play. The Huskies just missed making their second consecutive trip to Cleveland, Ohio, for the Second Round of the MAC Tournament, falling by just a point, 45-44, at Eastern Michigan in the first round. NIU lost seven games by five points or less and 11 games by 10 points or less. The Huskies led seven of those games in the final five minutes. The Huskies snapped a number of long losing streaks in , winning at Miami (Ohio) for the first time since 1981, at Central Michigan for the first time since 2006 and defeating Kent State for the first time since NIU was the fourth-least experienced team in the country in , according to StatSheet.com. 14 Mark Montgomery Head Coach» Michigan State, 2003 Third Season Overall» Third at NIU On March 24, 2011, Mark Montgomery was introduced as the 27th head coach in the history of the Northern Illinois University men s basketball program. Prior to NIU, Montgomery spent 10 seasons on Tom Izzo s staff at Michigan State. During his first season as head coach at Northern Illinois, Montgomery guided one of the youngest teams in the nation to the program s first MAC Tournament victory since 2003, defeating MAC West Champion Eastern Michigan in the opening round of the conference tournament to advance to Cleveland. NIU saw 55.9 percent of its minutes played by freshmen during the season, the sixth-highest percentage in the country. Montgomery s second season at NIU saw the Huskies continue to build the foundation of the program with the fourth-least experienced team in the country. The Huskies achieved a number of milestone victories in , including the program s first win at Miami (Ohio) since 1981, its first win at Central Michigan since 2006 and its first victory over Kent State since Montgomery came to NIU from Michigan State, where he served as an assistant for 10 seasons. He made 10 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and three Final Four appearances with the Spartans. Montgomery helped coach 26 All-Big Ten players at Michigan State and six players that went on to be selected in the NBA Draft, while on the bench for 235 MSU wins - an average of 23.5 victories per season. In May of 2007, Montgomery was elevated to associate head coach by Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. Montgomery began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Central Michigan where he became a member of Jay Smith s first coaching staff in Following a 6-23 season in , the Chippewas made a worst-to-first turnaround the following season as they finished the campaign with a 20-8 record, winning the MAC with a conference mark of An outstanding player during his collegiate career, Montgomery was a four-year letterwinner at Michigan State from A 1992 All-Big Ten Third Team selection, Montgomery ended his career as the then-career leader in games played at MSU (126). He was part of the 1990 Big Ten Championship team, three NCAA Tournament teams and an NIT Final Four. Montgomery ranks fourth on the career assists chart (561) after leading the team in assists as a junior (169) and senior (190). He also ranks third on the MSU career steals list (168). Following his collegiate career, Montgomery played four years of professional basketball in Europe. He averaged more than 25 points a game during his time playing in Germany, Lithuania and Sweden. Montgomery received his bachelor s degree in food industry management from Michigan State. The conference championship was the first for Central Michigan since 1987 and the school recorded only its second 20-win season since Named to the All-Big Ten Third Team as a senior in 1992 and also served as a team captain that season.
