The Huskies will close the regular season on Saturday at Ball State, ending in Muncie for the third-straight season. NIU has won seven of the last 10 against Toledo, including two of the last three in Toledo. Mike Davis scored a career-best 12 points in his first career start against Central Michigan (March 2). Davis is averaging 10.5 points per game over the last two games. Travon Baker recorded a new career-high six assists against Central Michigan. Baker has a 2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the last five games. 3 WHAT S TRENDING Northern Illinois is beginning the final week of the regular season with a road game tonight at Toledo. The Huskies will close the regular season on Saturday at Ball State, ending in Muncie for the third-straight season. Mike Davis scored a career-best 12 points in his first career start against Central Michigan (March 2). Davis is averaging 10.5 points per game over the last two games. Travon Baker recorded a new career-high six assists against Central Michigan. Baker has a 2.0 assist/turnover ratio in the last five games. Darrell Bowie is making a case for inclusion on the MAC All-Freshman Team. Bowie is averaging 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game during conference play, ranking sixth in scoring among conference freshmen in league play and fifth in rebounding. Bowie entered league play averaging 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. Travon Baker is shooting 87.5 percent from the free-throw line over the last 11 games. Abdel Nader has scored in double figures in 13 games this season; Nader has scored in double figures in 29 games during his career, including six 20-plus games. 11 different players have started at least one game for the Huskies with Mike Davis becoming the 11th player, making his first career start against Central Michigan (March 2). Keith and Kevin Gray have both played in 58-straight contests; neither has missed a game in their collegiate career. FINDING THEIR STRIDE Northern Illinois post players have found their shooting touch in recent games, with each of them shooting much better percentages during a recent stretch. Over the last nine games, Darrell Bowie is shooting 54.2 percent from the field. Prior to that stretch, Bowie was shooting 41.9 percent for the season. In that same nine game stretch, Keith Gray is shooting 59.1 percent from the field, Gray shot 36.5 percent from the field in the first 18 games of the year. Kevin Gray has shot 50 percent or better from the field in three of the last six games and has tied a season-high with four made field goals last time out against Central Michigan (March 2). Another one of NIU s primary post players, Sam Mader, is still working his way back from a shoulder injury that saw him miss five games. Mader has played 44 total minutes in the last seven contests, including eight minutes last time out against Central Michigan (March 2), going 2-of-2 from the field. A LOOK AT THE SEASON Freshmen have played 54.9 percent of the minutes this season for NIU; sophomores have added another 27.0 percent of the minutes (a total of 81.9 percent by underclassmen). The team leading at halftime has won all but two games played by NIU this season. The lone exceptions were at Miami (Jan. 9) when the Huskies and RedHawks were tied at the half, NIU won that contest and at Western Michigan (Feb. 16), when NIU led at the half but the Broncos came from behind to win. Five Huskies, Travon Baker, Aksel Bolin, Darrell Bowie, Keith Gray and Kevin Gray, have played in all 27 games this season. No player has started all 27 games, with Bolin and Kevin Gray making the most starts (22 each). With victories over Miami and Kent State, NIU recorded multiple wins against the MAC East Division for the first time since the season. Preseason All-MAC selection Abdel Nader played his first game of the season at UW Milwaukee (Dec. 7) after a season-opening suspension for violation of team rules. Northern Illinois returns its top-five scoring letterwinners and top-six rebounders from a season ago. Nine of the 14 players making up the Huskie roster this season are underclassmen. Of the five upperclassmen on NIU s roster, one will sit out this season following a transfer (Pete Rakocevic) and another had never played a Division I game until this season (Brandon Hayes). NIU made its first appearance in the ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon, playing Valparaiso at 7 a.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The Huskies were one of two MAC schools, along with Kent State, that will appear in the marathon. The Huskies will play 10 teams that appeared in postseason play a season ago: Valpo (Horizon League regular season champs, NIT), Dayton (NIT), Milwaukee (CBI), Washington (Pac-12 regular season champs, NIT Final Four), UMass (NIT Final Four), Akron (MAC regular season champs, NIT), Bowling Green (CIT), Buffalo (CIT), Kent State (CIT) and Ohio (NCAA Sweet 16). RESPONDING TO ADVERSITY Northern Illinois has done an excellent job of responding following tough games all season long; consider the following four contests and the game immediately following: NIU lost at Dayton on Dec. 1, 60-43, scoring just five points in the first half. The Huskies responded from a difficult first half by outscoring Dayton in the second half, NIU then went on to win its next game against SIU Edwardsville (Dec. 5), 65-54, shooting 52 percent from the field in the contest. Seattle defeated Northern Illinois, 75-48, on Dec. 19. The Huskies answered with a strong performance against Washington (Dec.22), trailing by six with less than two minutes to play before falling, After a home loss against Western Michigan (Jan. 19), NIU earned its first win at Central Michigan (Jan. 23) since 2006 with a victory over the Chippewas. The Huskies shot 48.8 percent from the field in the contest, including 52.6 percent from 3-point range. NIU scored four first half points in a loss at Eastern Michigan (Jan. 26). The Huskies answered that performance with a win over Kent State (Jan. 30). Northern Illinois never trailed against the Golden Flashes, shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 53.8 percent behind the arc. NADER BY THE NUMBERS Abdel Nader does not appear among the MAC individual statistical leaders because he has not appeared in 75 percent of NIU s games, if he had, Nader would rank in the top-15 of five different categories. Nader would rank 11th in scoring (13.1 points per game), 13th in rebounding (5.6 per contest), 11th in free throw percentage (77.2 percent), 11th in steals (1.3 per game) and ninth in defensive rebounds (4.1 per game). In league play, just three players in the MAC, Nader, Kent State s Chris Evans and Buffalo s Javon McCrea, rank in the top 20 in scoring as well as the top 15 in rebounding, blocks and steals. If he had played enough games to be eligible for overall statistical leaders, Nader would be the only player in the league to rank in the top-15 in points, rebounds and free-throw percentage. ABOUT TOLEDO The Rockets enter Tuesday s contest with a overall record, 8-6 in Mid-American Conference play. Toledo has lost two-straight after winning seven of its previous eight. Rian Pearson leads Toledo averaging 18.2 points, best in the MAC, and 7.0 rebounds, seventh in the MAC, per game. Toledo leads the MAC, and ranks fifth in the nation, in free throw percentage at 76.7 percent. 5 Despite currently sitting second in the MAC West, Toledo is ineligible for postseason play due to low Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. ALL-TIME SERIES Toledo leads the all-time series against NIU, Toledo has a 25-7 edge against the Huskies in Toledo, including a victory last season (Jan. 18, 2012). The Rockets won the earlier meeting this season, 69-64, in DeKalb. NIU has won seven of the last 10 against Toledo, including two of the last three in Toledo. CENTRAL MICHIGAN RECAP Central Michigan claimed a victory over Northern Illinois on Senior Night at the NIU Convocation Center. Mike Davis made his first career start against CMU and scored a career-best 12 points. Travon Baker dished out a career-high six assists against the Chippewas. Northern Illinois outscored Central Michigan in the paint. The Chippewa bench outscored the Huskie bench, Just six players scored for NIU, all five starters (Darrell Bowie, Kevin Gray, Aksel Bolin, Travon Baker and Mike Davis) and Sam Mader as the lone player off the bench. EASTERN MICHIGAN RECAP Eastern Michigan knocked off NIU, 53-41, on Wednesday to sweep the season series between the two schools. NIU attempted just 42 field goals, its second-lowest total of the season. The Huskies had 41 attempts at Dayton (Dec. 1). The Eagles outscored the Huskies 20-6 in the paint. Mike Davis tied a career-high with nine points against the Eagles. Brandon Hayes made a pair of free throws for the first two points of his Huskie career. BREAKING A 32-YEAR HEX With its victory at Miami on Jan. 9, Northern Illinois snapped a 13-game losing streak in Oxford, Ohio. NIU s last road victory against the RedHawks came on Feb. 21, The Huskies entered the game at Miami with a 1-19 record all-time in Oxford. The victory over Miami gave NIU a 1-0 start in conference play for the first time since when the Huskies won at Ball State in the league opener. Having broken the losing streak at Miami, NIU s longest conference road losing streak is now six, at Buffalo. The last Huskie victory in Buffalo came on Feb. 6, ANOTHER STREAK BITES THE DUST After snapping a 13-game losing streak at Miami (Ohio) in the conference opener, NIU snapped another road losing streak at Central Michigan. NIU s victory in Mt. Pleasant on Jan. 23 was its first at Central Michigan since a victory on Jan. 26, The win snapped a six-game losing streak on the road against the Chippewas. A CONVO FIRST, AND FIRST SINCE 2003 Northern Illinois broke another streak in conference play with its victory over Kent State on Jan. 30. The Huskie win snapped an 11 game losing streak to Kent State. Abdel Nader recorded his first career double-double with a career-high-tying 26 points and a careerbest 11 rebounds against the Golden Flashes. Nader hit a pull-up, 18-foot jumper with 2.2 seconds left to win the game for NIU. The victory was NIU s first against Kent State since, Feb. 8, 2003, when NIU earned a win at Kent State. The win marked the first time the Huskies have defeated the Golden Flashes in the NIU Convocation Center. NIU s last home win against Kent State was a triumph on Jan. 3, 1998, at NIU s former home, Chick Evans Fieldhouse. NADER NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK Sophomore Abdel Nader was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week on Feb. 4, following his performances against Kent State and Toledo. Nader averaged 22.5 points and 11.0 rebounds for the week, recording double-doubles in both contests, the first two double-doubles of his career. Nader tied a career-high with 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Kent State. Nader hit a gamewinning, 18-foot jumper with 2.2 seconds left to lift the Huskies to a two-point win over the Golden Flashes. The sophomore then scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Toledo. Nader finished the week shooting 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from behind the 3-point arc. WHAT S BACK FOR NIU With its six-man returning nucleus from a season ago, the Huskies return more than 60 percent of their production for in most statistical categories. The following are NIU s percentages returning from last season: minutes (60.7 percent), scoring (62.6), rebounds (63.1), assists (47.0), blocks (71.2) and steals (57.1). By comparison, here are the numbers that returned at the beginning of last season from the campaign: minutes (33.8 percent), scoring (32.0), rebounds (31.8), assists (26.6), blocks (39.7) and steals (27.4). OF NOTE Northern Illinois did not win a game last season in which the Huskies allowed more than 69 points. The Huskies were 3-4 in games decided by five points or less last season. NIU did not play an overtime game last season. The Huskies went 41 games between overtime contests from Feb. 26, 2011 to Dec. 7, The Huskies shot a better field goal percentage than their opponents in four of their five victories last season. NIU also had a better 3-point shooting percentage than its opponents in all five victories a year ago. NIU outrebounded its opponents 18 times last season, including in four of its five wins. THE PRESEASON PICKS NIU was picked to finish fifth in the MAC West in the preseason conference media poll. Toledo was picked to win the MAC West, followed by Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Ball State, NIU and Central Michigan. The MAC East was picked to finish as follows: Ohio, Akron, Kent State, Buffalo, Bowling Green and Miami. Ohio was also picked as the favorite to win the MAC Tournament. Abdel Nader was one of five played named to the West Division Preseason All-MAC Team. Joining Nader are Ball State s Jesse Berry, Toledo s Rian Pearson and Julius Brown and Western Michigan s Nate Hutcheson SEASON IN REVIEW NIU finished the season with a 5-26 record, 3-13 in Mid-American Conference play. The Huskies won their first MAC Tournament game since 2003, defeating MAC West Champion Eastern Michigan, 55-52, on the road to advance to Cleveland. NIU saw 55.9 percent of its minutes played by freshmen, the sixth-highest percentage in the country. Northern Illinois led the MAC in offensive rebounds, ranked second in rebounding defense and was third in rebounding margin. Abdel Nader was named to the MAC All-Freshmen Team, NIU s first All-Freshmen honoree since HUSKIES ADD HIGHSMITH On Nov. 14, Dontel Highsmith signed a national letter of intent to join the NIU men s basketball program next season. Highsmith averaged 27.8 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four steals per game last season as a junior at Dowagiac (Mich.) High School. Highsmith is also a standout in football and track and was named the South Bend Tribune s Boys Athlete of the Year in Highsmith is averaging 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, leading Dowagiac High School to a No. 2 ranking in Michigan s Class B. On Feb. 28, Highsmith was named a finalist for Michigan s Mr. Basketball award. HUSKIE HOOPS REPRESENTED IN LONDON OLYMPICS Former Huskie Richard Oruche represented Nigeria in the men s basketball tournament as this past summer s Olympic Games in London. Oruche played in all five games for Nigeria during the Olympic basketball tournament, averaging 3.4 points per game. Nigeria finished the tournament with a 1-4 record and did not advance beyond pool play. Against Team USA, Oruche had his best game of the tournament, playing 18 minutes, scoring seven points with two assists. A native of Bensenville, Ill., Oruche was a member of the NIU program from He redshirted the season and then appeared in 18 games during the campaign. Oruche and the Nigerians were the final team to qualify for the London Games, finishing third at the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament just three weeks before London. Nigeria defeated John Calipari s Dominican Republic team, 88-73, to earn the final spot. ELSEWHERE IN HUSKIE ATHLETICS The NIU football team won its second-straight Mid-American Conference championship and became the first MAC school to play in the BCS when it faced Florida State in the Orange Bowl. The Huskies lost to the Seminoles, 31-10, and finished the season The Huskie women s basketball team is 7-21, 2-13, in Mid-American Conference play. The Huskies will close the regular season on Wednesday, March 6, at Western Michigan. The Huskie wrestling team finished dual meet season with a 10-8 record. The Huskies return to the mat on Sunday, March 10, at the Mid-American Conference Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. NIU baseball team is 2-9 after finishing runner-up at the Dairy Queen Classic this past weekend at Minnesota. The Huskies open a three-game set at Southern Illinois on Friday. Huskie softball is 6-6 after splitting games against Butler and Saint Louis on Sunday, March 3. NIU wraps up the Coach B Classic in Carbondale, Ill., on Monday, March 4, against Southern Illinois.

7 NIU volleyball finished the season with a record. Huskie volleyball coach Ray Gooden was named MAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. The men s soccer team finished second in the MAC and fell to the nation s top-ranked team, Akron, 2-0, in the MAC Tournament Championship game. The Huskies finished with a record. The NIU women s soccer team finished with an record, falling to Central Michigan in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinals. 16 Mark Montgomery Head Coach» Michigan State, 2003 Second Season Overall» Second at NIU On March 24, 2011, Mark Montgomery was introduced as the 27th head coach in the history of the Northern Illinois University men s basketball program. Prior to NIU, Montgomery spent 10 seasons on Tom Izzo s staff at Michigan State. During his first season as head coach at Northern Illinois, Montgomery guided one of the youngest teams in the nation to the program s first MAC Tournament victory since 2003, defeating MAC West Champion Eastern Michigan in the opening round of the conference tournament to advance to Cleveland. NIU saw 55.9 percent of its minutes played by freshmen during the season, the sixth-highest percentage in the country. Under Montgomery s tutelage, Abdel Nader became the first NIU player since 2009 to be named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. Montgomery made 10 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and three Final Four appearances with the Spartans. He helped coach 26 All-Big Ten players at Michigan State and six players that went on to be selected in the National Basketball Association Draft, while on the bench for 235 MSU wins - an average of 23.5 victories per season. In May of 2007, Montgomery was elevated to associate head coach by Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. During his 10-year coaching tenure with the Spartans, Montgomery mentored four players (Chris Hill, Kalin Lucas, Drew Neitzel and Travis Walton) that currently rank among the top-10 in career assists at Michigan State. In addition, Montgomery helped eight Spartan perimeter players reach the 1,000-point plateau in his time on the Michigan State staff and helped Lucas earn Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 2009 and Walton earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year recognition that same season. Montgomery began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Central Michigan where he became a member of Jay Smith s first coaching staff in Following a 6-23 season in , the Chippewas made a worst-to-first turnaround the following season as they finished the campaign with a 20-8 record, winning the MAC with a conference mark of An outstanding player during his collegiate career, Montgomery was a fouryear letterwinner at Michigan State from A 1992 All-Big Ten Third Team selection, Montgomery ended his career as the then-career leader in games played at MSU (126). He was part of the 1990 Big Ten Championship team, three NCAA Tournament teams and an NIT Final Four. Montgomery ranks fourth on the career assists chart (561) after leading the team in assists as a junior (169) and senior (190). He also ranks third on the MSU career steals list (168). Following his collegiate career, Montgomery played four years of professional basketball in Europe. He averaged more than 25 points a game during his time playing in Germany, Lithuania and Sweden. Montgomery received his bachelor s degree in food industry management from Michigan State. His family includes his wife, Alexandra. In 2010, Montgomery was named by FoxSports.com as one of the top five high-major assistant coaches in the country. Named the top assistant coach in the Big Ten by national college basketball writer Jeff Goodman, based on a poll of league coaches. The conference championship was the first for Central Michigan since 1987 and the school recorded only its second 20-win season since Named to the All-Big Ten Third Team as a senior in 1992 and also served as a team captain that season. Played on the 1990 Big Ten championship team at Michigan State. Appeared in three NCAA Tournaments and an NIT Final Four as a player with the Spartans.
