5 Men s Basketball Outlook Last in Review The Colgate men s basketball team opened the season with a lot of firsts including head coach Matt Langel. He entered his first year at the helm of the Raiders after spending five years as an assistant coach at Temple. The Raiders also won their season opener for the first time in three years with a win over Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y. The win snapped a 13-game losing skid in the month of November dating back to the season. Senior Mike Venezia 12 was named the Patriot League Player of the Week after scoring 22 points in the win over the Bearcats. But the road didn t get any easier for the Raiders, who had to travel to nationally ranked Wisconsin and Syracuse before playing their home opener against St. Francis (Pa.). After a pair of road losses, Colgate stamped another first with a win over the Red Flash. The win at Cotterell Court was Colgate s first home opener victory in four years. Junior Brandon James 13 led the Raiders with 17 points in the win. After dropping their next two road games to Marist and Fordham, the Raiders returned to Hamilton for a win over Eastern Michigan. Colgate would drop its next decision on the road to Albany, before posting backto-back wins at home over St. Francis (N.Y.) (65-63) and Dartmouth (61-55). The overtime win against Dartmouth extended the Raiders winning streak to four-straight at home, which was the most since the season. The win also improved the Raiders to 5-5 on the season, which was the best 10-game start to a season since The Raiders were also just two wins shy of tying the school-record of seven wins before January. But following the 5-5 start, the Raiders went 1-9 over their next 10 games, including a 1-5 start in Patriot League play. Colgate s lone win during the 10-game slump was a overtime topping of Navy to snap an eight game losing skid. Junior center John Brandenburg 13 led the Raiders with a career-high 17 points, including six in overtime. Colgate would then top NJIT on the road to close out its non-conference schedule, before junior Mitch Rolls 13 drained a game winning three-pointer at the buzzer to beat Navy for a second time in Annapolis, Md. The win over Navy would end up being the last one for the Raiders who finished the season But the effort was still there to the end and it couldn t be more apparent than against Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament. Colgate trailed by as much as 22 in the second half but was able to piece together a 15-3 run to get back into it, before falling to the eventual League champions. The Raiders four seniors combined for 40 points in their final collegiate game, including Sterling Melville scoring a game-high 21 points. The Raiders senior class of Melville, Venezia, Yaw Gyawu 12 and Nick Pascale 12 combined for 45 percent of the Colgate scoring in the season along with 37 percent of the total rebounds. Through their careers the senior class amassed a total of 3,363 points and 1,436 rebounds. Both Gyawu (1,228) and Venezia (1,027) finished their careers as members of the 1,000-point club Colgate Raiders Colgate Position-by-Position Breakdown Colgate returns 10 letterwinners from last year's teams after losing three starters.
