Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. SERIES HISTORY This is the first ever meeting between the two teams. LAST TIME OUT The Bears took down the host school Liberty in the opening round of the Paradise Jam Friday, with a win over the Flames. Mercer shot an impressive 45.8% from the field while limiting their opponent to 34.7% and only 26.9% behind the arc. The Bears won the battle on the boards 37-23, with senior guard Jordan Strawberry corralling a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior guard Ria'n Holland led the way on offense with 13 points on four of seven from the field, including three of six behind the three point line. Fellow senior Demetre Rivers turned in a big second half, scoring all 10 of his points after the break. Mercer led nearly the entire game, only trailing for 33 seconds. UP NEXT The winner of Saturday's matchup will get a chance to play for the championship on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 p.m. The loser will play for third place at 6 p.m. on Sunday. The opponents are to be determined depending on outcomes in Friday's night session and Saturday's matchups. 3 IT'S PARADISE JAM TIME! Mercer competes in the 2017 Paradise Jam this weekend, an eight-team tournament that features a solid field of participants. The tournament, originally scheduled to be held in the U.S. Virgin Islands, was relocated to the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., due to the damage inflicted upon the islands from Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. The Bears will square off in the opening game of the tournament against host Liberty. Other teams competing include: Drexel, Houston, Quinnipiac, Wake Forest, Colorado, and Drake. Each team is guaranteed to play three games in three days, with the championship game slated for Sunday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 p.m. will be played on Liberty's home court at the Vines Center. Liberty and the Paradise Jam will donate all gate receipts to the humanitarian relief in the U.S. Virgin Islands in order to assist with the recovery due to the hurricane destruction. MID-MAJOR RESPECT Under Coach Bob Hoffman, the Bears have earned national respect as being one of the premier mid-major programs. With Coach Hoffman at the helm, the Bears have notched 10 NCAA power conference wins, including a thrilling victory over No. 6 Duke in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Championship Tournament. Those senior leaders include: Desmond Ringer, Jordan Strawberry, Ria n Holland, Demetre Rivers, Rashad Lewis, and Stephon Jelks. Holland is the team s leading returning scorer at 17.2 points per game; Jelks paced the club with 6.7 rebounds per outing; while Strawberry dished out a team-best 4.3 assists per contest. RETURNING FIREPOWER Mercer returns all five starters from last season s club. Those five starters Ria n Holland, Jordan Strawberry, Demetre Rivers, Desmond Ringer, and Stephon Jelks combined to score a total of 1,744 of the team s 2,269 points on the season. That translates to nearly 77% of the Bears offensive output from last year. In total, nine players are back from the team. PRESEASON WATCH LIST Holland was named to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List, as announced by College- Insider.com earlier this month. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation's top NCAA Division I mid-major player. Holland is one of 51 mid-major players included on the preseason watch list. The award is named after Lou Henson, who coached college basketball for 41 years and was sixth all-time in career Division I wins (779) when he left the game in Holland is one of four players from SoCon teams included on the watch list. Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, ASUN, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro-Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast. The winner of the Lou Henson Award will be announced on March 31, 2018 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Event in San Antonio, Texas, the site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship. Holland was also named to the preseason All-Southern Conference team as selected by the league s coaches prior to the start of this year. BALANCED SCORING So far this season, the Bears are featuring a balanced scoring attack. Three players are scoring in double figures, led by Holland at 19.8 points per outing. Fellow starters Demetre Rivers (10.5) and Jordan Strawberry (10.0). Mercer has also dished out 77 assists through the first three games, with freshman Marcus Cohen dishing 3.5 assists per outing. SCOUTING THE OPPONENT This will be the first meeting between Mercer and Drexel. The Dragons are members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and are 2-1 on the season, after upsetting Houston Friday. Drexel is coached by Zach Spiker, who is in his second season at the helm. The Dragons are led in scoring by Tramaine Isabell, averaging 22 points per game.
