Maryland is on pace to play the toughest schedule in the country with its cumulative opposition currently posting a record (.667). Notre Dame ranks second in the category with a.652 culmulative opposition record, while five Big Ten teams (including Maryland) rank in the top-9. Maryland closes its regular season with three straight opponents ranked in the Associated Press Top-25. Maryland and Michigan are the only two programs in the Power-5 to have a different quarterback start in three wins this season. The Terps earned wins with Tyrrell Pigrome (Texas) and Kasim Hill (Towson), before both were lost for the season due to injury. Sophomore Max Bortenschlager has since started every game in the Big Ten slate, winning games against Minnesota and Indiana. Bortenschlager has thrown 10 touchdowns and only five interceptions. Maryland continues to be one of the top programs in the turnover margin department, ranking second in the Big Ten Conference with a +6 turnover differential. The Terps have lost the turnover battle just once (UCF) in nine games this season, despite playing five different quarterbacks. Last season, Maryland had a -7 turnover differential. Junior DJ Moore, who currently leads the Big Ten Conference with 59 receptions, needs 19 catches to break the singleseason Maryland record for receptions set in 1994 by Geroy Simon (77). Moore is currently averaging 6.6 catches per game, which would put him on pace for 79 catches with three guaranteed games remaining. Moore, who also leads the conference in TD catches (8) and reception yards (820), has caught a pass from four different quarterbacks in Junior running back Ty Johnson needs just 43 yards to become the 13th player in Maryland history to surpass 2,000 career rushing yards. He currently ranks 14th in Maryland history in the category. Johnson is also looking to become the 14th player in Maryland history to record 3,000 all-purpose yards - he needs just 17 yards to reach the milestone STAT RANKS MD FBS CONF CONF. 3 ON THE OFFENSE By The Numbers Maryland is one of four programs to win a game with three different starting quarterbacks this season, including Saturday s opponent Michigan, Louisiana-Lafayette and Houston. Quarterbacks Tyrrell Pigrome (Texas), Kasim Hill (Towson) and Max Bortenschlager (Minnesota, Indiana) have each won games this year for the Terps, with Bortenschlager throwing 10 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Senior wide receiver Taivon Jacobs has been on fire in recent weeks, scoring a touchdown in three of his last four games while posting career-highs in receptions (7) and yards (97) against Rutgers. Jacobs, who has caught a pass in all 12 games this season, has posted single-season career-highs in receptions (32), receiving yards (390) and touchdowns (4). The Maryland offense ranks fourth in the Big Ten conference averaging 29.9 points-per-game after a 42-point outburst against Indiana two weekends ago. The Terps have scored at least 30 points in all four of their victories in Maryland is 9-2 overall under head coach DJ Durkin when scoring at least 30 points. The Terps have done well taking care of the ball in 2017, turning the ball over just nine times through nine games despite starting three different quarterbacks due to injury. Maryland s +6 turnover margin ranks second in the Big Ten Conference. Last season, Maryland committed 19 turnovers in 13 games and had a -7 turnover margin. Junior DJ Moore caught his eighth touchdown pass of the season against Indiana two weekends ago - a mark that is tied for the Big Ten Conference lead. His eight touchdown catches (with three different quarterbacks) is tied for fourth-most in a single-season in program history with Dan Bungori (1971). Torrey Smith is the all-time leader with 12. Moore also ranks fourth in Maryland history with 17 career touchdown receptions. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Brand came on in relief of the injured Max Bortenschlager late against Rutgers last weekend and completed 8-of-12 passes for 68 yards. Brand nearly tied the game on a fourth quarter drive late in the game, but his game-tying touchdown pass to Taivon Jacobs was called back due to holding. Junior DJ Moore posted eight catches against Rutgers, including six in the fourth quarter, to move into sole possession of eighth place in Maryland history at 125 career catches. Moore is also in range of the single-season reception mark of 77 held by Geroy Simon since Moore currently ranks eighth in program single-season history with 59 receptions. Moore has received a catch from four different quarterbacks this season, and eight in his career. Despite the injury issues at quarterback, the Maryland offense has been fortunate to be consistent at every other offensive position in Outside of quarterback, the Terps have started the same 10 players on offense in every game. Seven of those 10 players have started at least 15 games in their career. Wide receiver DJ Moore currently leads the Big Ten Conference with a reception in 30 straight games. Remarkably, Moore has received a pass from eight different quarterbacks during the streak due to various injuries. His catch streak matches Torrey Smith s 30-game reception streak from Career Receiving TD Leaders Maryland History Rk. Name Years Career TDs 1. 4 By The Numbers ON THE DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS 0.67 The Terps rank second in the Big Ten Conference with a +0.67/g turnover margin (+6), after winning the turnover battle against Rutgers, 2-1. Maryland has lost the turnover battle in just one of its nine games. Overall, the Terps have intercepted 10 passes and forced 11 fumbles (five lost) against just six interceptions and three lost fumbles (13-8). Last season, the Terps lost the turnover battle, 19-12, over the course of 13 games. 1 Senior linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr. needs just one more tackle to reach 300 for his career. Carter would be the first Terp to achieve the feat since Demetrius Hartsfield had 339 from Carter currently leads the team with 59 tackles. He is looking to become just the fifth Maryland player to lead the team in tackles in three consecutive seasons 1969, joining Alex Wujciak ( ), D Qwell Jackson ( ), E.J. Henderson ( ) and Ratcliff Thomas ( ). 6 Senior Jermaine Carter, Jr. has totaled 6.0 tackles for loss this season, including 2.0 TFLs in the win over Indiana two weekends ago. Carter now has 29.0 tackles for loss in his career, which ranks 13th in pogram history. Carter needs 3.0 more TFLs to crack Maryland s top-10 in the category. Carter has also forced three fumbles this season, which is tied for the lead in the Big Ten. It marks the most forced fumbles in a season for a Maryland player since current Pittsburgh Steeler Sean Davis had five in Maryland s special teams unit is now ranked 7th in the country and leads the Big Ten Conference with a 72.0 efficiency rating according to ESPN - a mark that was bolstered against Indiana with a blocked punt touchdown and a blocked PAT. Darnell Savage s blocked punt and 16-yard touchdown return helped spark a comeback for the Terps against the Hoosiers. The Terps currently rank in the top-3 in the Big Ten in both punt return average (12.6/r) and kick return average (24.2/r). 10 The Maryland defense posted its 10th interception of the season, as Antoine Brooks, Jr. intercepted Giovanni Rescigno on the final play of the first half against Rutgers last weekend. Brooks now has two picks on the season. The Terps are on pace for about 13 interceptions this season, which would be the most for the defense since totaling 19 in the 2010 season. 41 Sophomore Antoine Brooks, Jr. has been a revelation for the Terps on defense in his second season, leading the team in solo stops (41) and tackles for loss (7.5). Brooks has starred at the nickelback position all season and has had a penchant for making big plays, including his blocked field goal touchdown return against Texas in the season-opener. 73 The Maryland defense held Indiana to just 73 rushing yards in the victory two weekends ago, marking the fourth time this season the Terps have held their opponent under 100 rushing yards. Maryland has won all four games this season when holding its opponent under 100 rushing yards (Texas, Towson, Minnesota, Indiana). Statisically, the Terps have improved immensely in the run defense category, from allowing rushing yards/g in 2016 to 174.8/g in Junior Ty Johnson currently leads the Big Ten Conference with 531 total kick return yards. After being avoided on kickoffs in the previous two games, Johnson returned a pair of kicks for 37 yards against Rutgers. Johnson s returning prowess was highlighted by a 100-yard kickoff return against then-no. 10 Ohio State. Johnson has done it all for the Terps, ranking third in the Big Ten and 14th nationally with all-purpose yards/g. He currently ranks 15th in Maryland history with 2,899 career all-purpose yards. 4

21 DJ DURKIN Head Coach Bowling Green 01 2nd Year at Maryland The Maryland football program undoubtedly made great strides in 2016, its first year under the guidance of Head Coach DJ Durkin. The Terps doubled their win total from the prior season and garnered bowl eligibility in Durkin s first year in College Park. Regarded as one of the brightest young coaching minds in college football, Durkin was named the 36th head football coach in Maryland history on December 2, He quickly changed the culture and brought instant energy to the program. Durkin improved the results on the field as well. The Terps started the 2016 season 4-0 and won five of their first seven games, including a victory over Michigan State. After falling in three straight games to nationally-ranked teams, including a pair of matchups against Top 5 squads, Maryland defeated Rutgers, 31-13, in its season finale to garner bowl eligibility. Durkin guided Maryland to its 27th bowl game all-time when the Terps faced off against Boston College in the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit. Durkin also showed his recruiting prowess by signing a consensus Top 20 class in 2017, which was his first full recruiting cycle. The class, which included 11 4-star signees and five members of the ESPN300, ranked among the best in program history. Durkin was able to land nine of the Top 20 players from the state of Maryland and three of the top nine players from Washington, D.C. Prior to arriving in College Park, Durkin served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Michigan, leading a nationally-renowned defensive unit that ranked fourth in the country. Under Durkin, the Wolverines limited opponents to 17.2 points per game in 2015, in addition to shutting out three consecutive opponents the longest such streak at Michigan in 35 years. Durkin was an outstanding recruiter in his time as an assistant. While at the University of Florida, Durkin helped land four straight top-11 recruiting classes and was named Rivals.com s 2012 Recruiter of the Year as a result. In total, Durkin contributed to the impressive recruitment of nine 5-star prospects on the defensive side during that stretch. Durkin s immediate impact in Ann Arbor was also displayed in player development. Michigan had nine defensive All-Big Ten honorees, including a pair of first team defensive backs: Jourdan Lewis and Jabril Peppers. In addition, three Wolverines (Ryan Glasgow, Lewis and Peppers,) were named semifinalists for national defensive awards in As the defensive coordinator at Florida from , Durkin led the Gators to consecutive top-15 rankings in total defense with the 15th-best mark in the country in 2014 (329.0 ypg) and the eighth-best (314.2 ypg) in Florida s 2014 team finished the year ranked in the top-10 in the nation in yards allowed per play (4.45), yards allowed per rush attempt (3.16) and yards allowed per pass attempt (5.9). The group was highlighted by All-SEC first team selections Dante Fowler Jr., and defensive back Vernon Hargreaves, along with second-team all-conference honoree Antonio Morrison. Fowler was subsequently selected third overall in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. His selection continued a stretch in which Gator defensive players were selected in the first round of three consecutive drafts. In Durkin s first season as defensive coordinator, Florida finished first in the SEC and seventh in the country in pass defense (171.8 yards per game), sixth in first downs allowed (16.1 per game) and 15th in scoring defense (21.1 points per game), while allowing only 27 touchdowns, the sixth fewest in the nation in Durkin s coaching paid dividends at the next level when defensive tackle Dominique Easley was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. From , Durkin served as special team coordinator and linebackers coach at Florida and coached under current Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn. Once again, Durkin was a key contributor of a staff that helped produce an NFL first round pick when defensive tackle Shariff Floyd was taken in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. As linebackers coach, Durkin tutored Jon Bostic, who finished his career as a second-team All-SEC selection and was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears in Durkin s coaching on special teams helped produce punter Chas Henry, the winner of the Ray Guy Award in 2011, and kicker Caleb Sturgis, a two-time finalist for the Lou Groza Award who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. Under Durkin s tutelage, Stanford s defensive ends helped the Cardinal rank 11th nationally in sacks per game in 2007 and At Stanford, Durkin helped the Cardinal bring in their highest ranked recruiting class in eight years in As a graduate assistant at Notre Dame from , Durkin worked primarily with defensive ends and helped develop Notre Dame all-time sack leader, All-Pro NFL defensive end and two-time Super Bowl champion Justin Tuck. As a player, Durkin starred at Bowling Green as a starter at defensive end and outside linebacker from He led the team in sacks in 1998 and served as a team captain for two seasons. Durkin was honored with numerous team awards including the Ken Schoeni Award for character and toughness, the Carlos Jackson Award personifying the values of a student-athlete and the Leadership Award. He earned his bachelor s degree in business marketing from Bowling Green in 2001 and his master s degree in educational administration and supervision in A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Durkin and his wife Sarah have one daughter, Abigail, and one son, Luke.
