Through eight games, Maryland has recorded 16 interceptions, the highest total in the country. The Terps are the only team in the Big Ten and one of just three FBS teams with at least one interception in every game this season including five a few weeks back against Rutgers, the Terps most in a game since they totaled seven picks against Duke in Both senior LB Tre Watson and junior S Darnell Savage Jr. have posted four interceptions this season, which is tied with nine other players for the third most in the country. This past week against Michigan State, both senior defensive back Ravon Davis and senior defensive lineman Byron Cowart notched interceptions. With a senior running back Ty Johnson 98-yard kickoff return touchdown at #15 Michigan on October 6 and a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown by sophomore running back Javon Leake against Illinois, Maryland is the only team in the FBS with two kickoff return touchdowns of over 95 yards and also the only team in the FBS that has two different players who have recorded a kickoff return touchdown. Against Illinois, Maryland racked up 712 yards on offense (431 rushing, 281 passing). The 712 yards are the most the Terps have accumulated in a single game since at least 1982 and the most by any team in a Big Ten game since Michigan had 751 yards of offense (248 rushing, 503 passing) against Indiana on Oct. 12, GAME 10: MARYLAND STREAKS Consecutive Starts: OL Brendan Moore (34) Consecutive Starts on Defense: DB Darnell Savage Jr. (26) Consecutive Wins when leading at halftime: 9 SOCIAL MEDIA Facebook: /MarylandFootball YouTube: /MarylandAthletics CONTACT Dustin Semonavick (Asst. 3 By The Numbers ON THE OFFENSE Sophomore running back Javon Leake became the first ever player in Big Ten history to win both the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week in the same week after his performance against Illinois. Leake totaled four touchdowns (three rushing, one kickoff) and 274 all-purpose yards in this past weekends game, the first Terp with four touchdowns in a game since DJ Adams reached the end zone four times in the 2010 Military Bowl. Redshirt freshman Anthony McFarland recorded back-to-back 100-yard rushing games against Temple (9/15) and Minnesota (9/22), joining Wayne Wingfield (1979) as the only freshmen in program history to achieve the feat. A third 100-yard game would set the freshmen record for 100-yard games in a single-season. The electric playmaker has rushed for 402 yards on 45 carries over the last three games, averaging 8.9 yards per carry. With both a rushing and receiving touchdowns against Texas and Illinois, freshman wide receiver Jeshaun Jones became the first Big Ten freshman to have two games with a touchdown catch and touchdown run since Ohio State s Maurice Clarett in Jones is also the quickest Maryland freshman to score three receiving touchdowns in a season since DJ Moore in The Terps have had four different running backs rush for 100 yards in a game this season: Ty Johnson (at BG, MINN), Tayon Fleet- Davis, (at BG), Anthony McFarland (Temple, MINN) and Javon Leake (ILL). This is the first time in program history Maryland has had four different 100-yard rushers in the same season. In addition, Maryland is just one of five teams in the FBS this season to have four different players have 100-yard rushing games. With 468 rushing yards this season, senior running back Ty Johnson has jolted all the way to fourth on Maryland s all-time rushing list, now with 2,597 yards. The senior is now 374 yards behind Steve Atkins ( ) for third all-time in rushing. Johnson also catapulted to third in career all-purpose yards, surpassing the 4,000 yard mark, and surpassing WR Stefon Diggs against Iowa ( ). Maryland has been perfect in the red zone so far this season, converting on all 18 of its opportunities inside the opponent s 20-yard line, making them the only team in the conference and one of only two in the country to be perfect inside the 20. The Terps have scored touchdowns on 14 of the 18 trips to the red zone while kicking field goals on the other four. Maryland scored 63 points against Illinois, the most the Terps have ever scored in any conference matchup in program history and the most in any game since Maryland scored 63 last season against Towson (9/9/17). The 63 points were also the most Maryland has scored against a FBS team since the Terps put up 74 against Missouri. Against Illinois, Maryland converted on 80% of their third down attempts (12-for-15), the program s best percentage since also converting 80% (16-for-20) in a win at Duke on Sept. 25, The Terrapins have had two games this season in which two players recorded 100 yards on the ground. Most recently, Ty Johnson had 123 yards and Anthony McFarland posted 112 yards against Minnesota. Prior to that, Johnson (124) and Tayon Fleet-Davis (102) achieved the feat against Bowling Green. The Terps are one of four Power-5 schools in the country to accomplish this feat (Mississippi State, Oregon, Kentucky), and the only school in the Big Ten. 4 1 By The Numbers ON THE DEFENSE/ST True freshman placekicker Joseph Petrino is the only freshman kicker in the FBS to remain perfect on kicks this season and the only kicker in the Big Ten to be perfect. Petrino has knocked down all six field goal attempts and all 34 extra point attempts to total 43 points. Petrino hit a career-long 40-yard field goal in the rain against Bowling Green on September 8. The freshman was true on all nine PATs against Illinois on October 27. He is Maryland s first true freshman placekicker since Brad Craddock (2012), who went on to win the Lou Groza Award in Both senior linebacker Tre Watson and junior safety Darnell Savage Jr. have posted four interceptions this season, which is tied with nine other players for the third most in the country. Savage Jr. had two interceptions last week against Rutgers while Watson picked off Iowa (10/20) and is one of only two linebackers in the nation with four picks. 5 Maryland s five interceptions against Rutgers are the most by a team in a Big Ten conference game since Penn State also picked off Rutgers five times on September 13, The Terps five interceptions came from four different players at three different positions, two by senior safety Darnell Savage Jr. and one apiece by senior defensive lineman Byron Cowart, defensive back Tino Ellis and senior linebacker Tre Watson. 5 Junior Tino Ellis was sensational against Minnesota, recording a career-best five pass breakups. The mark is tied for the most in a single game across the country this season. The DeMatha product leads the team with nine pass breakups and has also recorded 17 tackles (14 solo) and 3.0 tackles for loss. 6 Of the 12 players who tallied three or more tackles against then #19 Iowa, six recorded their career-highs. Junior linebacker Isaiah Davis led the group with 14, redshirt senior defensive end Jesse Aniebonam, senior defensive lineman Byron Cowart and junior defensive lineman Adam McLean all posted seven, redshirt freshman defensive back Deon Jones managed a career-best five, while junior defensive linemnan Keiron Howard tied a career-best with three. 6.1 Senior linebacker Tre Watson leads the Big Ten and ranks 11th in the country in solo tackles/g (6.1). The fifth-year transfer from Illinois was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against Minnesota, when he totaled a game-high 11 tackles, including a sack, and returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. He has posted at least 10 tackles in six of the last seven games, including 15 in both the Temple (9/15) and Iowa (10/20) games. 8 Against Rutgers, Maryland held the Scarlet Knights to just 2-for-16 passing for eight yards. The eight passing yards allowed are the lowest amount for a Terrapin opponent since at least 1980, with the closest number coming on September 6, 1997 when Maryland held Ohio to 10 yards. In addition, the two completions are the least amount since Maryland held No. 22 Michigan State to two last season. 8 Senior Ty Johnson sprang loose for a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown at Michigan in Week Five, marking the second of his career. Johnson is one of eight players in Maryland history to record multiple kickoff return touchdowns, and is looking to join Torrey Smith as the only players in program history with three kickoff return touchdowns. Johnson also vaulted from 10th in career kick return yards to seventh, currently standing at 1,152 yards. 8.5 A year removed from garnering All-Big Ten honors for leading Big Ten defensive backs in tackles for loss (9.5) in 2017, Antoine Brooks, Jr. has picked up right where he left off this season. Brooks wrapped up Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win over Texas, and leads the team in tackles for loss with 8.5 through eight games. 16 The Terps have had at least one interception in each of the eight games, totaling 16 on the season thus far, the most in the country. It marks the most interceptions through nine games for Maryland since posting 19 during that span in Senior Darnell Savage, Jr. and junior linebacker Tre Watson lead the way with four interceptions apiece this season, which is tied for the third most in the country. 4 GAME 10: MARYLAND at INDIANA
