The Terps and Longhorns have met three times, with this being the first meeting since squaring off in the Sun Bowl 39 years ago (1978). Head coach DJ Durkin is back for his second season at Maryland after improving the Terrapins record by three victories and leading the team to an appearance in the Quick Lane Bowl in his inaugural year at the helm. Durkin s Terps are set to play one of the nation s toughest schedules, with seven of the team s nine Big Ten opponents appearing in the postseason in 216. The Terps have won seven consecutive season-openers dating back to 21, including 11 of their last 12. In the seven game streak, Maryland has outscored its opponents by an average margin of 22 points (36-14). It has also totaled at least 4 points in four straight games. The Terps are -7 all-time when opening the season against ranked opponents. The Maryland staff has been busy on the recruiting trail, with head coach DJ Durkin making sensational strides both in the local DMV region and nationally. Durkin s 217 class ranked in the top-2 across all major recruiting services. The class included 17 players from the DMV region, in addition to 11 four-star signees and five members of the ESPN3. Maryland enters the 217 season with 32 players who have started at least one career collegiate game, including 17 on the defensive side of the ball. Of the 32 players, 18 begin the season with at least two more years of eligibility. Durkin started seven true freshman overall last season, which was tied for most in all of FBS with South Carolina. The list did not include specialist, Wade Lees, who served as the punter in all 13 games. Maryland is set to open its 125th season of football Saturday against Texas, compiling a all-time record since the inaugural 1892 season. The Terps have advanced to 27 bowl games along the way, and captured the 1953 National Championship. GAME 1: MARYLAND vs. TEXAS STREAKS Starts: LB Jermaine Carter, Jr. (25) Starts on Offense: WR D.J. Currently signed with the Los Angeles Rams. ON THE OFFENSE 2 By The Numbers Sophomore quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome is slated to make his second career start under center for the Terps. He made his first career start against Minnesota as a true freshman in 216, passing for 161 yards and a touchdown and gaining 71 yards on the ground. Pigrome had a knack for making big plays, ranking third in rush yards (254) and rush TDs (4) in limited action. QB Perry Hills Started 26 career games at quarterback, including 11 starts in 216. Led the Big Ten in completion percentage (61.9) and ranked second in pass efficiency (14.4) in 216. WR Levern Jacobs Started 22 career games at wideout, finishing career ranking seventh in Maryland history with 13 catches and 12th in receiving yards (1,544). Currently signed with the Washington Redskins. OL Mike Minter Started 11 games at left guard in 216 and 14 overall in career. WR Teldrick Morgan Started 11 games in 5th-year transfer season in 216, leading the team in receptions (43) and ranking second in yards (497) and TDs (4). MILESTONE WATCH RB TY JOHNSON Milestone: 1,5 rushing yds Current: 1,254 rushing yds WR D.J. MOORE Milestone: 1, career receiving yds Current: 996 career receiving yds Milestone: 1 career TD catches Current: 9 career TD catches Maryland returns three offensive lineman who have started at least nine career games, including junior Damian Prince (19), junior Brendan Moore (13) and sophomore Terrance Davis. The trio helped open major holes last season for a rushing attack that eclipsed 2,5 total yards for the first time since 23. Junior wide receiver D.J. Moore looks to build on an excellent sophomore campaign, when he became the first Terp to total six touchdown grabs in a season since Stefon Diggs (212). Moore s nine career touchdown catches are tied for the most through two seasons at Maryland with Stefon Diggs (212, 13), Jermaine Lewis (1992, 93) and Dan Bungori (1971, 72). Sophomore Lorenzo Harrison had one of the most impressive rookie seasons in Maryland history, totaling 633 rushing yards on just 88 carries in nine appearances. His 7.2 yards per carry was the most ever for a Maryland freshman (min. 75 att.). He was just 57 yards shy of breaking LaMont Jordan s freshman rushing record. Running back Ty Johnson made a habit of breaking loose for big plays as a sophomore, totaling 1 plays of at least 4 yards (all in the final 1 games). His most memorable outing came against Purdue, when he rushed for 24 yards on just seven carries - the best yards/carry (29.1) mark for a 2-yard rusher in FBS over the last 2 years. Wide receiver D.J. Moore currently leads all Maryland receivers and ranks second in the Big Ten Conference with a reception in 21 straight games (Amarah Darboh - UM - 33). It is the longest streak for a Maryland player since Torrey Smith finished his career with a 3-game reception streak from Maryland returns nearly 8 percent of its total rushing yards from 216, including 1,637 combined rushing yards from Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison. The Terps also added highly touted four-star Anthony McFarland out of DeMatha Catholic, who was rated the third-best running back nationally. 14 Junior Ty Johnson finished the 216 season with 1,4 rushing yards, becoming just the ninth player in Maryland history to reach the miletone. He also set the Maryland record for yards per carry (1 att.), averaging an incredible 9.13 yards. 4 GAME 1: MARYLAND vs. TEXAS

5 By The Numbers ON THE DEFENSE/ST Defensive coordinator Andy Buh is back for his second season with the Terps, returning a unit that includes 17 players who have started at least one game. The group included three true freshmen who started in the defensive backfield a year ago: Elijah Daniels, Tino Ellis and Quantrezz Knight. Aniebonam also had a team-best 14. tackles for loss, which was followed closely by Kingsley Opara s 11. TFLs. Senior linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr., is looking to become just the fifth Maryland player since 1969 to lead the program in tackles three seasons in a row. Carter, who has 213 tackles over the last two seasons, would join Alex Wujciak (28-1), D Qwell Jackson (23-5), E.J. Henderson (2-2) and Ratcliff Thomas ( ) in the exclusive club. Sophomore punter Wade Lees has returned for the Terps after a successful rookie season, pinning 18 punts inside the 2 and only recording one touchback. The Terps ranked fourth in the Big Ten in punt return defense. At 29 years old, Lees is the oldest player in the Big Ten and third-oldest in all of FBS. Senior Jesse Aniebonam had an excellent junior season, totaling 14. tackles for loss for 89 yards. 20 DJ DURKIN Head Coach Bowling Green 1 2nd Year at Maryland The Maryland football program undoubtedly made great strides in 216, its first year under the guidance of Head Coach DJ Durkin. The Terps doubled their win total from the prior season and garnered bowl eligibility in Durkin s first year in College Park. Regarded as one of the brightest young coaching minds in college football, Durkin was named the 36th head football coach in Maryland history on December 2, 215. He quickly changed the culture and brought instant energy to the program. Durkin improved the results on the field as well. The Terps started the 216 season 4- and won five of their first seven games, including a victory over Michigan State. After falling in three straight games to nationally-ranked teams, including a pair of matchups against Top 5 squads, Maryland defeated Rutgers, 31-13, in its season finale to garner bowl eligibility. Durkin guided Maryland to its 27th bowl game all-time when the Terps faced off against Boston College in the 216 Quick Lane Bowl, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit. Durkin also showed his recruiting prowess by signing a consensus Top 2 class in 217, which was his first full recruiting cycle. The class, which included 11 4-star signees and five members of the ESPN3, ranked among the best in program history. Durkin was able to land nine of the Top 2 players from the state of Maryland and three of the top nine players from Washington, D.C. Prior to arriving in College Park, Durkin served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Michigan, leading a nationally-renowned defensive unit that ranked fourth in the country. Under Durkin, the Wolverines limited opponents to 17.2 points per game in 215, in addition to shutting out three consecutive opponents the longest such streak at Michigan in 35 years. Durkin was an outstanding recruiter in his time as an assistant. While at the University of Florida, Durkin helped land four straight top-11 recruiting classes and was named Rivals.com s 212 Recruiter of the Year as a result. In total, Durkin contributed to the impressive recruitment of nine 5-star prospects on the defensive side during that stretch. Durkin s immediate impact in Ann Arbor was also displayed in player development. Michigan had nine defensive All-Big Ten honorees, including a pair of first team defensive backs: Jourdan Lewis and Jabril Peppers. In addition, three Wolverines (Ryan Glasgow, Lewis and Peppers,) were named semifinalists for national defensive awards in 215. As the defensive coordinator at Florida from , Durkin led the Gators to consecutive top-15 rankings in total defense with the 15th-best mark in the country in 214 (329. ypg) and the eighth-best (314.2 ypg) in 213. Florida s 214 team finished the year ranked in the top-1 in the nation in yards allowed per play (4.45), yards allowed per rush attempt (3.16) and yards allowed per pass attempt (5.9). 2 The group was highlighted by All-SEC first team selections Dante Fowler Jr., and defensive back Vernon Hargreaves, along with second-team all-conference honoree Antonio Morrison. Fowler was subsequently selected third overall in the 215 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. His selection continued a stretch in which Gator defensive players were selected in the first round of three consecutive drafts. In Durkin s first season as defensive coordinator, Florida finished first in the SEC and seventh in the country in pass defense (171.8 yards per game), sixth in first downs allowed (16.1 per game) and 15th in scoring defense (21.1 points per game), while allowing only 27 touchdowns, the sixth fewest in the nation in 213. Durkin s coaching paid dividends at the next level when defensive tackle Dominique Easley was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 214 NFL Draft. From , Durkin served as special team coordinator and linebackers coach at Florida and coached under current Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn. Once again, Durkin was a key contributor of a staff that helped produce an NFL first round pick when defensive tackle Shariff Floyd was taken in the first round of the 212 NFL Draft. As linebackers coach, Durkin tutored Jon Bostic, who finished his career as a second-team All-SEC selection and was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears in 213. Durkin s coaching on special teams helped produce punter Chas Henry, the winner of the Ray Guy Award in 211, and kicker Caleb Sturgis, a two-time finalist for the Lou Groza Award who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles.
