Maryland won the inaugural meeting in 2, 28-3, as quarterback Danny O Brien passed for two touchdowns and Davin Meggett cleared yards on the ground. Junior running back Ty Johnson is looking to become just the fourth player in Maryland history to rush for at least yards in four consecutive games. The Cumberland, Md., native would join an elite group that includes Steve Atkins (7 straight in 978), Bruce Perry (5 straight in 2) and Charlie Wysocki (4 straight in 98). Johnson has racked up 459 yards during his three-game tear dating back to 26, averaging 2. yards-per-carry during the span. Maryland picked up its first victory against a ranked opponent in seven seasons last weekend in Austin when it upset No. 23 Texas, 5-4. It also marked Maryland s first-ever win against a ranked opponent in a season-opener (previously -7). Maryland was -3 all-time against Texas before the victory. The Terrapins have won consecutive home-openers at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium dating back to 26. Maryland s last loss in a home-opener came in a narrow, 28-24, defeat to No. 25 Clemson on Sept., 25. Since 998, Maryland has won 7-of-8 home-openers. The Maryland offense exploded for 5 points on the road against the Longhorns in its season-opener, marking its greatest point total against a ranked opponent in the 25-season history of the program. The point total bested the previous mark of 45 points set in the Terps Homecoming victory over Virginia on Oct., 25. Although the scoreline may not reflect it, Maryland s defense was tremendous in the victory against Texas. The Terps allowed just three offensive touchdowns (one came with :9 remaining in the game), while holding the Longhorns to just 98 yards on the ground. Maryland s front seven is extremely experienced with all four lineman and two linebackers being seniors. STREAKS Starts: LB Jermaine Carter, Jr. (26) Starts on Offense: WR D.J. 3 ON THE OFFENSE By The Numbers The Maryland offensive line was extremely impressive in its debut under first-year coach Tyler Bowen, allowing just one sack in the season-opener against #23 Texas. Terrapin quarterbacks were given time in the pocket to complete 2-of-5 pass attempts (8%), while the team gained 263 rushing yards on the ground. The Terps scored six touchdowns in the win, with four coming in the rushing attack. Redshirt senior wide receiver Jacquille Veii has an interesting matchup this weekend as he plays his former team, Towson. Veii has had a winding road since coming to college, spending his first two seasons (23-4) in College Park before transferring to Towson for the 25 season. He led the Tigers in both catches (44) and yards (55) in his lone season with the Tigers. He then returned to Maryland in 26 and served a redshirt season. Freshman quarterback Kasim Hill showed great poise in his collegiate debut, entering late in the third quarter with a 3-point lead for the injured Tyrrell Pigrome. Hill completed all three of his pass attempts, including a critical 4-yard completion to D.J. Moore on 3rd-and-9 late in the game. He also rushed for his first career touchdown - a 3-yard score. 8.3 The Maryland offense exploded for 8.3 yards per play in the win against Texas, marking its greatest output since averaging 8.5 yards per play in a 47- drubbing of Old Dominion on Sept. 7, 23. Running back Ty Johnson (5 rush, 4 rush) and receivers D.J. Moore (46 rec, 4 rec) and Taivon Jacobs (46 rec) each had plays of at least 4 yards in the game. Junior wide receiver D.J. Moore caught his th career touchdown pass on a 2-yard throw by Tyrrell Pigrome against Texas. The reception moved Moore past Vernon Davis, among others, for t-th on Maryland s career touchdown list. He now has seven TD catches in his last 4 games. Moore also surpassed, career receiving yards in the game. 22 Wide receiver D.J. Moore currently leads all Maryland receivers and ranks second in the Big Ten Conference with a reception in 22 straight games (Amarah Darboh - UM - 33). It is the longest streak for a Maryland player since Torrey Smith finished his career with a 3-game reception streak from Ty Johnson picked up right where he left off in 26, continuing to make big plays for the Terps. Johnson had a pair of rushes that were at least 4 yards, while also returning a kickoff 62 yards. Not including the kick return, Johnson now has 2 plays of at least 4 yards over his last games. 8 Redshirt senior Taivon Jacobs was electric in his first action since the 25 season, catching three passes for 8 yards and a touchdown against Texas. The speedy Jacobs also totaled 3 kickoff return yards. A large chunk of Jacobs receiving yardage came on a 46-yard touchdown strike thrown by Tyrrell Pigrome. QUOTABLE DJ Durkin on Kasim Hill s stepping in at QB against Texas: Yeah, there wasn t an ounce of doubt [in Kasim]. I mean, that s how he s been since the day he got here. It s just him. He s got that way about him, he s got that it factor about him, for sure. DJ Durkin on the team s resiliency against Texas: I m proud of our guys for how they hung tough and fought through adversity. There was a lot of adversity in that game. We started not only the game, but not only our season with a pick six going the other way and just there wasn t, no one flinched on the side. There wasn t anyone who panicked, flinched. It was like, Okay, let s keep going about our business, and that was kind of the mentality throughout the whole game. So very proud of that, happy about that. That s a big step for us. 3

4 By The Numbers ON THE DEFENSE/ST The Maryland special teams unit came up huge early in the second quarter against Texas, when left tackle Derwin Gray was able to knock down a Longhorn field goal attempt. Sophomore Antoine Brooks, Jr., was able to scoop the ball and took it 7 yards the opposite way for the touchdown. Brooks earned Big Ten Co-Specialist of the Week honors for his play. Maryland s defense managed to hold the Longhorns powerful offense to just one score on three red zone chances. It was a story of bend, but don t break for the defensive unit, which routinely showed up in massive situations. Most telling was Texas -for-4 day on fourth-down conversions. 2 Senior linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr., showed why he is the heart and soul of the Maryland defense against Texas, when he stormed into the Longhorn backfield for a 9-yard sack on the first defensive possession of the game. Carter s sack set the tone for the rest of the game, as he finished with seven tackles and 2. sacks to his name. 23 In total, Maryland had 23 different players record a tackle in the win over Texas, showing the depth of the team in a big game. Comparatively speaking, the Longhorns only had 7 players record a tackle. Of the defensive players that started last Saturday, nine had previously started a game in their college careers. Antoine Brooks, Jr. and Antwaine Richardson were the only players making their first collegiate starts. 25 Jermaine Carter, Jr., totaled two tackles for loss in the win over Texas, propelling him to 25. total in his career. The ouput moved him past D Qwell Jackson and Randy White for t-7th place on Maryland s career tackle for loss list. 98 The Terrapin defense stood tall in the trenches against Texas, allowing just 98 yards of rushing. It was an extremely positive sign for a defensive unit which ranked 99th nationally and th in the Big Ten last season allowing nearly 25 yards per game on the ground. Texas powerful Chris Warren III was bottled up for just 3 yards, while his backup Kyle Porter could only manage 2 yards of his own. 83 The Terps totaled 83 kick return yards against Texas on six returns for an oustanding average of 3.5 yards per return. Senior Taivon Jacobs led the way with four returns for 3 yards, while Ty Johnson also had two returns for 8 yards. Most of Johnson s yardage came on a massive 62-yard return in the second half that was a response to Texas punt return touchdown. Johnson then scored on a 4-yard rush just two plays later. QUOTABLE DJ Durkin on the defensive effort against Texas: I thought our defense played really well. All [Texas ] scores in the first half were not against the defense. We lost a little steam there in the end, we had some guys tired, just made some dumb mistakes, we weren t lined up right. Kind of slow getting lined up. So credit to them. They were going tempo in the second half and moving it and getting us in some of those spots. But I m happy with our defense overall. I m not happy about that last drive of the game especially. We wanted to finish the game and play 6 minutes, I think we played about 59. But we ll certainly address that and clean it up. But it was good. There were some good individual efforts. Antoine Brooks I thought played really well at the nickel position. Jermaine [Carter] as always played really, really well. Our defensive line did a good job. There s a lot of three- and four-man pass rush situations where they got pressure on the quarterback, which really helped us. 4

20 DJ DURKIN Head Coach Bowling Green 2nd Year at Maryland The Maryland football program undoubtedly made great strides in 26, its first year under the guidance of Head Coach DJ Durkin. The Terps doubled their win total from the prior season and garnered bowl eligibility in Durkin s first year in College Park. Regarded as one of the brightest young coaching minds in college football, Durkin was named the 36th head football coach in Maryland history on December 2, 25. He quickly changed the culture and brought instant energy to the program. Durkin improved the results on the field as well. The Terps started the 26 season 4- and won five of their first seven games, including a victory over Michigan State. After falling in three straight games to nationally-ranked teams, including a pair of matchups against Top 5 squads, Maryland defeated Rutgers, 3-3, in its season finale to garner bowl eligibility. Durkin guided Maryland to its 27th bowl game all-time when the Terps faced off against Boston College in the 26 Quick Lane Bowl, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit. Durkin also showed his recruiting prowess by signing a consensus Top 2 class in 27, which was his first full recruiting cycle. The class, which included 4-star signees and five members of the ESPN3, ranked among the best in program history. Durkin was able to land nine of the Top 2 players from the state of Maryland and three of the top nine players from Washington, D.C. Prior to arriving in College Park, Durkin served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Michigan, leading a nationally-renowned defensive unit that ranked fourth in the country. Under Durkin, the Wolverines limited opponents to 7.2 points per game in 25, in addition to shutting out three consecutive opponents the longest such streak at Michigan in 35 years. Durkin was an outstanding recruiter in his time as an assistant. While at the University of Florida, Durkin helped land four straight top- recruiting classes and was named Rivals.com s 22 Recruiter of the Year as a result. In total, Durkin contributed to the impressive recruitment of nine 5-star prospects on the defensive side during that stretch. Durkin s immediate impact in Ann Arbor was also displayed in player development. Michigan had nine defensive All-Big Ten honorees, including a pair of first team defensive backs: Jourdan Lewis and Jabril Peppers. In addition, three Wolverines (Ryan Glasgow, Lewis and Peppers,) were named semifinalists for national defensive awards in 25. As the defensive coordinator at Florida from 23-4, Durkin led the Gators to consecutive top-5 rankings in total defense with the 5th-best mark in the country in 24 (329. ypg) and the eighth-best (34.2 ypg) in 23. Florida s 24 team finished the year ranked in the top- in the nation in yards allowed per play (4.45), yards allowed per rush attempt (3.6) and yards allowed per pass attempt (5.9). 2 The group was highlighted by All-SEC first team selections Dante Fowler Jr., and defensive back Vernon Hargreaves, along with second-team all-conference honoree Antonio Morrison. Fowler was subsequently selected third overall in the 25 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. His selection continued a stretch in which Gator defensive players were selected in the first round of three consecutive drafts. In Durkin s first season as defensive coordinator, Florida finished first in the SEC and seventh in the country in pass defense (7.8 yards per game), sixth in first downs allowed (6. per game) and 5th in scoring defense (2. points per game), while allowing only 27 touchdowns, the sixth fewest in the nation in 23. Durkin s coaching paid dividends at the next level when defensive tackle Dominique Easley was drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 24 NFL Draft. From 2-22, Durkin served as special team coordinator and linebackers coach at Florida and coached under current Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn. Once again, Durkin was a key contributor of a staff that helped produce an NFL first round pick when defensive tackle Shariff Floyd was taken in the first round of the 22 NFL Draft. As linebackers coach, Durkin tutored Jon Bostic, who finished his career as a second-team All-SEC selection and was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears in 23. Durkin s coaching on special teams helped produce punter Chas Henry, the winner of the Ray Guy Award in 2, and kicker Caleb Sturgis, a two-time finalist for the Lou Groza Award who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. Under Durkin s tutelage, Stanford s defensive ends helped the Cardinal rank th nationally in sacks per game in 27 and 29. At Stanford, Durkin helped the Cardinal bring in their highest ranked recruiting class in eight years in 29. As a graduate assistant at Notre Dame from 23-4, Durkin worked primarily with defensive ends and helped develop Notre Dame all-time sack leader, All-Pro NFL defensive end and two-time Super Bowl champion Justin Tuck. As a player, Durkin starred at Bowling Green as a starter at defensive end and outside linebacker from He led the team in sacks in 998 and served as a team captain for two seasons. Durkin was honored with numerous team awards including the Ken Schoeni Award for character and toughness, the Carlos Jackson Award personifying the values of a student-athlete and the Leadership Award. He earned his bachelor s degree in business marketing from Bowling Green in 2 and his master s degree in educational administration and supervision in 24. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Durkin and his wife Sarah have one daughter, Abigail, and one son, Luke.
