A pair of ESPN2 games will be on Saturday when Utah State travels to defending national champion Auburn and WAC top preseason pick Hawai i hosts Colorado. The Warriors were picked as the favorite by both the media and coaches for the 2011 season. Fresno State was second in both polls and Nevada was third. As selected by the media, Hawai i quarterback Bryant Moniz was voted the preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner was picked as the Defensive Player of the Year. Moniz, a senior, was the nation s leader in passing and total offense last season. Last year, he became just the 11th player in FBS history to surpass 5,000 passing yards in a season. He averaged passing yards per game and also led the nation in passing touchdowns (39) and ranked eighth in passing efficiency (159.11). Wagner, a senior, is a twotime fi rst-team all-wac honoree. Last season, he led the WAC and tied for seventh in the FBS with 11.1 tackles per game. He logged a total of seven double-digit tackle games, and had at least six stops in all 12 games. WAC SPORTS NETWORK The WAC and Learfield Sports announced the creation of the WAC Sports Network (WSN) prior to the start of last season. WAC teams will play in the Sheraton Hawai i Bowl in Honolulu against a Conference USA opponent, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho versus a MAC team and the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego versus a team from the Mountain West. BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES Since 1997, the WAC has been an official part of the Bowl Championship Series. The WAC s champion will receive an automatic berth in one of the five BCS bowl games if ranked in the top 12 of the BCS Standings (and is the highest ranked team from a conference without an automatic bid) or if ranked in the top 16 of the BCS Standings and its ranking is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls. The BCS Standings are determined by a formula involving polls and computer rankings. Next year s National Championship Game will be played in New Orleans on Jan. 9, TOP STAT LEADERS Following are the returning stat leaders in the WAC from Fresno State s Robbie Rouse returns for his junior season after rushing for yards per game last year, 17th nationally and second in the WAC. On the defensive side, Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner is the leading returning tackler for the second straight season after averaging a WAC-best 11.1 tackles per game last season as a junior. Fresno State senior Logan Harrell is the top returning sack leader with 10.5 last year, the second most in the WAC. RETURNING ALL-WAC PLAYERS Of the 29 first-team all-wac players in 2010, just five return for the 2011 season and none from the offensive side of the ball. Fresno State returns two of the five in senior defensive lineman Logan Harrell and senior placekicker Kevin Goessling (a two-time honoree). Hawai i returns senior linebacker Corey Paredes, Idaho returns junior punter Bobby Cowan and Utah State returns a two-time recipient in senior linebacker Bobby Wagner. There were 30 second-team players, and 15 of those should return to action this year. Nevada has the most returning with four followed by Fresno State and Louisiana Tech with three apiece. Hawai i and San Jose State return two while New Mexico State has one. PERSONNEL CAPSULE Five of the eight teams in the WAC return at least 15 starters for the 2011 season. To Tie-what is needed by the top active player to tie those ahead of him WAC Football BOWL OPPONENTS Of the 43 non-conference matchups, 21 are against teams that played in bowl games last year and five are at WAC home sites. All eight teams play at least two nonconference opponents that competed in a bowl last year while New Mexico State is playing a WAC-high four bowl opponents. Nevada head coach Chris Ault completed his 26th season as a head coach and is , the fifth winningest active coach in FBS. Fresno State head coach Pat Hill has 75 WAC victories, the second most in league history. CHANGES COMING The WAC will have a new look over the next couple of years. This season, the conference will be an eight-team league as Boise State withdraws after 10 years in the WAC. In 2012 (following the departures of Fresno State, Hawai i and Nevada), the WAC welcomes Denver, Seattle, UT Arlington, Texas State and UTSA with the latter two competing in football. 5 Fresno State Bulldogs (0-0, 0-0 WAC) The loss to Northern Illinois in the udrove Humanitarian Bowl was its worst in a bowl game... has lost four of its last five bowl games... senior QB Ryan Colburn was 28-of- 38 for 288 yards and two touchdowns in the bowl game... he finished his career with 5,334 passing yards, the eighth most in school history... PK Kevin Goessling has made 5-of-7 field goals from 50-yards or longer in his career... for his career, he has made 51-of-64 field goals... senior LB Ben Jacobs started 52 consecutive games, the longest streak in Bulldog history... the Bulldogs have 56 blocked kicks since 2002, the most in the nation during that time... has 17 BCS wins since 2000, the most in the nation among non-bcs teams during that time WAC Team Notes (--/RV) Nevada Wolf Pack (0-0, 0-0 WAC) Its seven-game winning streak is tied for the fourth longest in the nation... was the lowest ranked one-loss team in the nation last year... QB Bryant Moniz had 5,040 passing yards last season, the third most in WAC history... senior WR Greg Salas caught at least one pass in 41 straight games, tied for the fourth longest streak in the nation... his 119 receptions broke a school record and were the second most in a season in WAC history... his 1,889 receiving yards set a new school and WAC record... senior Scott Enos converted a school-record 105 consecutive PATs... UH is 33-0 when scoring 40 or more points since scored 40 or more eight times during the 2010 season. Idaho Vandals (0-0, 0-0 WAC) With its win over San Jose State in the season finale, won two of its last three games for the first time since was second in the nation in fumble recoveries with 19, one behind North Carolina State... senior QB Nathan Enderle became the third quarterback in Vandal history to throw for more than 10,000 yards... his 10,084 are the ninth most in WAC history... in school history, he finished No. 1 in attempts with 1,427, No. 2 in passes completed (779), No. 3 in passing yards and No. 4 in passing touchdowns (74) players caught at least one pass for the Vandals and seven of those had at least 20 led by Eric Greenwood s P Bobby Cowan led the WAC with a 45.1-yard average per punt. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (0-0, 0-0 WAC) Set a school attendance record with 116,908 for its six home games... finished the season with a 4-4 mark against conference opponents, the sixth time that Tech recorded a.500 or greater mark against conference opponents over the last 10 years... senior Phillip Livas finished his career with 2,758 kick return yards, missing the WAC record of 2,782 yards set by UTEP s Cedric Johnson ( ) by just 24 yards... he was fifth in WAC history in all-purpose yards with 5, Livas was the only player in the WAC to have at least 100 yards receiving, rushing, returning punts and returning kicks last year... he scored multiple TDs four different ways during his career with the Bulldogs: reception (7), rush (4), kickoff return (4) and punt return (4). New Mexico State Aggies (0-0, 0-0 WAC) Taveon Rogers WAC and NCAA record 1,410 kick return yards last season lasted one week as Utah State s Kerwynn Williams surpassed him by 34 yards in the their final game... senior DB Davon House became the first Aggie to be named first-team all-wac in consecutive seasons... San Jose State Spartans (0-0, 0-0 WAC) Had four players named to freshman All-America teams, doubling its all-time total... Keith Smith s 14.0 tackles for loss were the second best single-season total by a freshman linebacker since the NCAA began keeping defensive statistics in his 8.9 tackles per game led the nation s freshmen... Jalal Beauchman concluded his career with at least one reception in his last 35 games... his 146 career receptions are the third most in school history... Chandler Jones and Noel Grigsby became the first two Spartan freshmen with 50 receptions apiece in the same season... the Spartans 10-game losing streak is the longest in the nation... has lost 14 consecutive road games... is the 13th team in WAC history to post a 0-8 record in WAC play.
