GAME 32 March 11, 2016 Quicken Loans Arena Cleveland, Ohio Eastern Michigan Central Michigan THE LAST TIME WE MET CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) The Eastern Michigan University women s basketball team looked to secure a spot in the Mid-American Conference Championship when it tangled with No. 2 seed Central Michigan University in the semifinals, March 11. The Eagles (21-11, 10-8 MAC) could not overcome CMU s (22-9, 13-5 MAC) 15 three-pointers, falling by a final tally of A career-day from junior Phillis Webb paced the Green and White with 20 points. The Brooklyn Park, Minn. product knocked down a career-high four threepointers while also adding six rebounds, a rebound, and an assist. Fellow juniors Cha Sweeney and Janay Morton also reached double figures, adding 18 and 12 points, respectively. Graduate transfer Chanise Baldwin nearly collected a double-double, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds while also chipping in eight points. The 6-foot-3 center also tied a season-high with five blocks, becoming the first Eagle to reject five shots twice in a season in more than a decade. Eastern converted 27-of-67 shots from the field good for a 40.3 field goal percentage, including a 9-of-28 performance from behind the arc. Meanwhile, Central knocked down 51.7 percent of its shots (31-of-60) and 15-of-27 triples. The Chippewas held a advantage on the boards while the Eagles held the upperhand in the turnover battle, Following an early triple by Morton, Webb went on to hit 3-of-4 from downtown to fuel the Eagles to a lead after one quarter of play. Central struck first, opening the game with a layup before Morton s trey. Feeding off the energy a stout defensive effort that forced CMU into three turnovers in the first three minutes, the Eagles continued to take advantage of their speed and the Chippewas miscues. EMU held a 7-0 lead in fastbreak points in the opening period, allowing Eastern to take a lead into the second quarter. The Green and White continued to outwork the Chips in every facet of the game in the second half. Defensively, the Eagles forced CMU into three turnovers while cashing in on those miscues to the tune of seven points. Baldwin used her size and aggressiveness down low to provide the Eagles with extra possession offensively and limit the MAC s top offense in Central. Corralling an offensive rebound in the early goings, Baldwin kicked it out to Sweeney at the top of the key. With the defense completely collapsed in the paint, Sweeney drained the trey to extend EMU s lead. As shots kept falling for the Eagles, the Green and White became even more locked in defensively. On the ensuing inbounds, EMU s full-court press forced a 10-second violation before sophomore Sasha Dailey converted a mid-range jumper to push Eastern s lead to double digits, After Sweeney kicked to Webb for a baseline three-pointer gave EMU its largest lead of the game, 37-24, Central Michigan called timeout with 5:24 left in the half. Despite scoring just four points over the course of the next five minutes, the Eagles held a lead at halftime. Central used a 32-point third quarter to take their largest lead of the game into the final period. CMU shot 68.4 percent in the frame, converting 13-of-19 shots compared to EMU s 7-of-15 showing. More notably however was the Chippewas 6-of-8 shooting from distance. Entering the fourth quarter trailing 69-58, the Eagles could not overcome the deficit despite forcing the Chippewas into seven turnovers. The Eagles' win marked the first time since EMU defeated Weber State, 57-42, Nov. 29, 2014, that the Green and White had won a game despite committing more than 20 turnovers. FEW AND FAR BETWEEN: The Jan. 25 win over Bowling Green was just the Eagles' second victory against the Falcons in the past 12 years. In fact, Fred Castro has now tied Tory Verdi, AnnMarie Gilbert, and Shane Clipfell's combined total for wins against the MAC East foe. Verdi's squad topped BGSU, 64-52, in the Convocation Center, Jan. 17, Longtime EMU bench boss Suzy Merchant had the most success against the Falcons, picking up eight wins versus Bowling Green during her tenure, including a run of five straight from STEPPING UP: Eastern Michigan knew prior to its game versus Bowling Green, Jan. 25, it would be without the services of both Sasha Dailey and Esabelle Levine due to injury, forcing the Eagles to rely heavily on a short bench with limited experience. With Sheyna Deans and Phillis Webb fouled out of the game as the teams went to overtime, Head Coach Fred Castro turned to juniors Micah Robinson and Tori Easley, as well as freshmen Jayla Russ, Nailah Mitchell, and Becca Turney to finish the task at hand. Despite going just 1-of-5 from the floor, the Eagles attacked the Falcons, drawing 18 free throws. Paired with a defense that held the Falcons to 2-of- 12 from the floor in extra time, EMU converted 14 FT's to secure the, 81-74, victory. OUTSHOOTING THE OPPOSITION: For the second time since conference play began, the Eagles posted a better field goal percentage than its opposition, Jan. 25, against Bowling Green. Additionally, it was the Eagles' best offensive performance since the season opener versus Georgia State, Nov. 12. Eastern Michigan finished the day 28-of-64 from the field, good for a 43.8 field goal percentage. EMU grabbed a season-high 57 against Morehead State, Nov. 13, and fell one short of that mark, Nov. 16, versus Ferris State. In addition to posting consecutive 55+ rebound efforts for the first time in more than 20 years, the Eagles have recorded the most 51+ rebounding showings since , when EMU accomplished the task six times. D'ING UP THE BOBCATS: Eastern Michigan's defense held Ohio to just 38.1 percent (24-of-63) shooting at the Convocation Center, Jan. 21. The total was the second-worst for the Bobcats in Mid-American Conference play, while it was the ninth-time this season that EMU's defense had limited an opponent to under 40 percent shooting. STAT SHEET STUFFER: Junior Sasha Dailey filled up the stat sheet against Western Michigan, Jan. 14, finishing the afternoon with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-19 shooting, to go along with nine rebounds, six assists, four steals, and two blocks. DEANS BREAKS THROUGH: Senior Sheyna Deans finally broke through, posting the first 20+ point game of her career at Miami, as she led the Eagles with a game-high 21 points against the RedHawks. Deans was efficient in her return to the starting lineup, converting 8-of-14 shots from the field, grabbing seven rebounds, and adding two assists, and a steal in 37 minutes of work. BECOMING ROUTINE FOR ROBINSON: Rewriting her personal-bests is something that junior Micah Robinson continues to do on a nightly basis. Entering her third season playing in the MAC, the Ann Arbor, Mich. native had tallied eight points, six rebounds, and 11 assists in 24 all-time contests. In the league opener, Robinson racked up 16 points, five rebounds and five assists at Northern Illinois, Dec. 31. She followed that performance up with a 12-point performance against Toledo, Jan. 4, in 40 minutes of action. Playing the entire game, Robinson surpassed her career total for minutes played in conference games. DAILEY POSTS A SOLID WEEK: Junior Sasha Dailey led the Eagles in the first full week of Mid- American Conference play, averaging 19.0 points, 3.5 assists, 3.0 steals, and 3.0 rebounds per game. Against Toledo, Jan. 4, the dynamic guard poured in 20 points, while grabbing four rebounds, three steals, and two assists in 37 minutes of action against her hometown team. Then, in EMU's clash with Kent State, Dailey paced the Eagles with 18 points. She also added a seasonhigh-tying five assists, three steals, two rebounds, and a block. Dailey has now hit double figures in scoring in 13-of-15 games this season, including the last four. Additionally, her offensive production has been matched on the defensive side of the court where she has posted multiple steals in eight consecutive contests, dating back to Dec. 6. MOVING UP THE LIST: Phillis Webb s 30 point 14 rebound effort at NIU, Dec. 31, marked her fourth double-double of the season, and ninth of her career. Currently, Webb ranks 10th all-time in EMU laurels in the category, trailing Shani Charles and Paige Redditt for ninth-place by four. Sarah VanMetre and Olivia Fouty are tied atop the list, holding the program standard of 17 career double-doubles. LEAVING HER MARK: In Eastern s pummeling of Air Force, Webb was dominating. The Brooklyn Park, Minn. product finished the afternoon with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, 17 rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Webb s 17 rebounds rank tied for the sixth-most in Convocation Center history, while also tying the second-most by an Eagle on their home court. WEBB TURNS IN A CAREER DAY ON NEW YEAR'S EVE: If 2017 is anything like the way Phillis Webb closed out 2016, then Eastern Michigan is in for a treat. The Brooklyn Park, Minn. product turned in a career-day for the Eagles in the league opener at Northern Illinois, Dec. 31, picking up her ninth career double-double in the contest. Webb finished the day with a career-high 30 points, becoming just the second Eagle to score 30-or-more points in a game this season. She was also EMU's top rebounder, grabbing 14 boards to secure the double-double. Webb was 11-of-19 from the field, including going 7-for-7 at the free throw line, in a personalhigh 39 minutes of work. Her previous best in points was 24 set earlier this year versus Georgia State, Nov. 12. She also added a block and two steals in the road contest. DEFENSE LOCKS IN, CLIPS THE FALCONS: In EMU's win over Air Force in its non-conference finale, the Eagles held the Falcons offense at bay. Air Force connected on just 23.0 percent (14- of-61) of its field goal attempts, the ninth-lowest field goal percentage in Convocation Center history. Additionally, the Falcons' 23.0 percent clip is the third-worst by an NCAA Division I team and lowest since the Eagles held Northern Illinois to just 20.0 percent from the field, Feb. 19,

Her 31 points tied her career-high mark which she set in her collegiate debut at the beginning of the season, while it was the most points she has ever scored against a Division I institution. CAREER DAY ON THE GLASS FOR EASLEY: Since making the leap into the starting five, junior Tori Easley has turned in some of the best games of her career for the Green and White. Most recently, Easley grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds versus Detroit Mercy, Dec. 6, marking the first time the Toledo, Ohio native had reached double digits in rebounding in her career. DAILEY PICKS UP ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: After averaging 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in games against Tulane and Northern Colorado, junior Sasha Dailey was named to the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament team.
