2 2014 NOTEBOOK A SECOND STRAIGHT NINE-WIN SEASON With a victory against Wake Forest on November 29, earned its ninth win of the season. The victory marked the first time in history the Blue Devils won nine or more games in consecutive seasons. The 2013 squad tallied a program-record 10 triumphs. With 10 victories in 2013 and nine in 2014, the Blue Devils posted consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 1988 (7-3-1) and 1989 (8-4). s nine wins marked the program s sixth campaign with nine or more victories, but only the second since 1940, joining the 2013 squad. BOWLING THREE STRAIGHT YEARS The Blue Devils played in a bowl game in three straight years for the first time in program history. had never appeared in consecutive bowl games until the seasons. The Hyundai Sun Bowl was s 11th bowl appearance and third since the 1994 season. The Blue Devils are 3-8 in bowl appearances. s last bowl win was a 7-6 victory against Arkansas on January 2, 1961, in the Cotton Bowl. s all-time record in seasons following a bowl is with winning records in all but the 1958 (5-5), 1990 (4-7) and 1995 (3-8) seasons. Before last season, had not finished above fifth in the Coastal since divisional play began in The Blue Devils joined the ACC in 1953 and had not finished within the top two of the league in consecutive years since capturing three straight championships from TOMLINSON A CONSENSUS ALL-AMERICA In 2014 right guard Laken Tomlinson became just the fifth Blue Devil to be named a consensus All- America, joining Fred Crawford (1933), Ace Parker (1936), Ernie Jackson (1971) and Clarkston Hines (1989). Tomlinson was named to eight All-America teams, the most by any player in a year in history. He was a first team selection by the Associated Press (AP) and Walter Camp Foundation (WCF), a second team honoree by USA Today, Athlon Sports and Sporting News, a third team choice by Phil Steele Magazine and Lindy s and an honorable mention pick by Sports Illustrated. The Blue Devils last first team All-America honoree was Will Snyderwine in 2010 (American Football Coaches Association). s last WCF and AP first team All-American was Clarkston Hines in Tomlinson became the first Blue Devil to receive two first team All-America honors in the same season since punter Brian Morton in Tomlinson was s first offensive player to receive two first team selections since Hines in TWO WALTER CAMP ALL-AMERICA HONOREES Tomlinson and safety Jeremy Cash (second team) both received WCF All-America honors. 3 A HIGHLY DECORATED SEASON The Blue Devils had six All-Americans in 2014 with Jeremy Cash, Jamison Crowder, DeVon Edwards, Ross Martin, Will Monday and Laken Tomlinson, tied for the third most in a year in program history and the most in a campaign since six in ALL-AMERICANS ON THE RISE has 11 student-athletes who have earned a total of 33 All-America honors in the seven years ( ) under head coach David Cutcliffe. In the previous seven years ( ), had one All-America, Mike Hart, a Football News honorable mention selection at tight end in DUKE IN THE NFL The Blue Devils had two 2015 NFL Draft selections in first rounder Tomlinson and fourth round pick Crowder. Tomlinson was the 28th overall selection, going to the Detroit Lions. He was the highest pick since Mike Junkin went fifth overall to the Cleveland Browns in Crowder was selected by the Washington Redskins with the 105th overall pick. It was the first time a coach had received the AFCA region honor. CUTCLIFFE MOVING UP DUKE S WINS CHART With s nine victories in 2014, Cutcliffe moved ahead of Mike McGee ( /37) and into sole possession of third on the all-time chart with 40 victories. Wallace Wade ( ; ) owns the school mark with 110 triumphs while Bill Murray ( ) is second with 93 wins. EIGHT ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK PICKS ended 2014 with six student-athletes receiving eight total ACC Player of the Week honors. Freshman RB Shaun Wilson (rookie/sept. 15), redshirt senior LT Takoby Cofield (offensive lineman/sept. 22), redshirt junior S Jeremy Cash (co-defensive back/sept. 29; defensive back/oct. 13), redshirt junior C Matt Skura (co-offensive lineman/oct. 20), senior WR/PR Crowder (receiver/ Nov. 3; specialist/nov. 10) and redshirt sophomore KR/S Edwards (specialist/nov. 3) received awards for. had 15 ACC honorees in the last 18 weeks the league presented awards, including two weeks when the Blue Devils were on a bye. SECOND MOST POINTS AT DUKE tallied 421 points in 2014, the second-highest single-season total in program history, behind only the 2013 squad s 459 points. The 2013 team also played one more game than the 2014 group. The top three single-season point totals have all come under Cutcliffe s direction FOR THREE STRAIGHT YEARS finished 2014 averaging points per game. It marked the first time in program history averaging or more points for three straight years. The Blue Devils averaged points per game just five other times: 33.50/1943; 32.79/2013; 32.70/1941; 31.54/2012 and 30.00/ ,000 TOTAL YARDS IN THREE STRAIGHT YEARS reached 5,178 yards of total offense for the season, topping the 5,000-yard plateau for the third straight season, a first in program history. Boone finished his career with the second highest winning percentage by a starting quarterback in program history at.760. He trailed only Worth Lutz s.846 mark. Boone had 25 career decisions to Lutz s 13. Only four quarterbacks have a winning percentage of.700 or higher. QBS RUSHING INTO THE END ZONE Redshirt sophomore QB Thomas Sirk ran for eight touchdowns in 2014, tied for the fourth most by a quarterback in a season. Brandon Connette set the record in 2013 with 14. Boone added five rushing scores in 2014, tied for the ninth most by a quarterback in a season. Sirk and Boone combined to score 13 of s 24 rushing touchdowns (.542 percent). CROWDER TIES FOR THE TOP SPOT Crowder finished his career with 283 receptions, tied with former Blue Devil Conner Vernon ( /283) for the and ACC career records. SECOND IN DUKE HISTORY IN YARDS Crowder also owns the second most receiving yards in program history with 3,641. The total is good for third in ACC history, behind only Vernon (3,749) and Florida State s Rashad Greene ( /3,830). 1,000 FOR THREE SEASONS Crowder ended the 2014 campaign with 1,044 receiving yards to join s Clarkston Hines ( ) as the only ACC players with three 1,000- yard seasons. 100 OR MORE, 16 TIMES Crowder tallied 102 receiving yards against No. 15 Arizona State in the Hyundai Sun Bowl to give him 16 career 100-yard performances. The total is the second most in ACC and school history, behind only Hines 17 such contests. RUNNING AT A PREMIUM RATE averaged rushing yards per game in 2014, its highest average since gaining yards per contest in The low average during the drought was yards per game in has relied on an increasing ground game in the last four years under Cutcliffe, nearly doubling the average from the 2011 squad (94.08 yards per game) in OR MORE TOUCHDOWNS ON THE GROUND rushed for 24 touchdowns in 2014 and had 28 ground scores the previous season. It is the first time since the Blue Devils had consecutive seasons with 20 or more rushing TDs. The 52 ground scores in the last two years are the third most in a two-season span in history, behind only 55 from and 53 from From , had just 47 rushing touchdowns. THE FEWEST HITS ALLOWED BEHIND THE LINE The offensive line surrendered 41.0 tackles for lost yardage in 2014, an average of 3.15 TFL per game. Both totals were the lowest in the nation. AMONG THE TOP 10 IN FEWEST SACKS The Blue Devils allowed 13.0 sacks in 2014, tied for the 10th fewest allowed among FBS programs. s 1.00 sacks per game was the nation s eighth-best mark while the Blue Devils led the ACC in fewest sacks allowed per passing attempt (36.23). The Blue Devils turned in four consecutive games without surrendering a sack and had yielded just 4.0 through the first nine contests of the season. MARTIN BECOMES CAREER SCORING LEADER Kicker Ross Martin became s career points leader in week four against Tulane, passing Sims Lenhardt, who amassed 240 points between Martin ended the year with 310 career points. Martin has 52 career field goals, trailing only Lenhardt (55) for the record. Martin has converted a -record 110 consecutive PATs. Martin owns 154 career extra points, the eighth most in ACC history. 83

4 LITTLE ALLOWED ON PUNT RETURNS yielded just 33 punt return yards, or 2.54 yards a game and 2.06 yards per runback. In seven games, the Blue Devils did not allow a punt return yard. In two contests, foes had negative punt return yards. s average of 2.06 yards allowed per return was the nation s third best. FEW POINTS PER GAME ALLOWED The Blue Devils yielded points a game, the fifth best mark since the start of the 1976 season and best since points per game in held seven opponents to under 20 points in 2014, its best year since keeping eight under 20 in OR FEWER POINTS OVERALL held to 10 points on November 8, marking the fifth time during the campaign the Blue Devils held a foe to 13 or fewer points. In head coach David Cutcliffe s previous six seasons, the Blue Devils had just seven games keeping foes to 13 or fewer points. had not held five opponents to 13 or fewer points in the same season since 1971, when it held six to 13 or fewer. FOURTH QUARTER LESS THAN A TD ALLOWED In s last 27 games, opponents have scored 121 fourth quarter points, an average of 4.48 per contest. In 2014, shut out Troy, Kansas, Tulane, Virginia, and Wake Forest in the fourth. AMONG THE TOP 25 IN OVERALL QB RATING limited opposing quarterbacks to a rating, good for the 23rd best defensive mark in the country. 100 OR MORE TACKLES FOR THREE Linebacker (134), safety DeVon Edwards (133) and safety Jeremy Cash (111) each tallied 100 or more tackles in and Wake Forest were the only teams in the ACC with multiple players over the 100-tackle mark. The Blue Devil trio of Helton, Edwards and Cash combined to record 36.1 percent of s tackles. It was the eighth time in program history had at least three players with 100 or more tackles (1976, 1980, 1986, 1990, 1996, 2007 and 2013). It was just the third time the Blue Devils had at least three players record 110 or more tackles, joining the 1976 and 2013 squads. had one of four defensive trios nationally to post 100 or more tackles each, joining Cincinnati, Illinois and Wake Forest. Cash and Helton were the first players with 100 or more stops in consecutive seasons since Vincent Rey and Michael Tauiliili in HELTON RECEIVES CAMPBELL TROPHY Helton became the first student-athlete, and only the second in ACC history, to receive the William V. Campbell Trophy, given to the nation s absolute best football student-athlete. He owned a 3.64 grade point average while majoring in psychology and minoring in theater studies. Helton was also a Capital One/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American and received the ACC s Jim Tatum Award, given annually to the league s top senior football student-athlete. THREE IN A ROW FOR DUKE Helton s NFF Scholar-Athlete Award and Tatum Award selection gave three consecutive winners as Sean Renfree (2012) and Perry Simmons (2013) were honored the previous two years. HELTON THE LEADING ACC TACKLER Helton topped the ACC with tackles per game, leading the league for the second straight year. Helton is only the fifth player in league history to repeat as league tackle champion, and the first since current NFL Pro Bowler Luke Kuechly (Boston College) accomplished the feat from THE 100, 10.0, 5.0 CLUB Cash was the only defensive back in the country to have tallied 100 or more tackles, 10.0 or more tackles for loss and 5.0 or more sacks in Cash was one of just 10 FBS defensive backs to have recorded 110 or more tackles last season.
