6 SEVEN POINTS OR FEWER Duke held four opponents to seven or fewer points in 2015: Tulane (7), N.C. Central (0), Boston College (7) and Army West Point (3). It was the first time since 1971 that the Blue Devils totaled four games limiting foes to seven or fewer points. The four games with seven or fewer points allowed were the most in the ACC. A closer look: School Games with 7 or Fewer Points Allowed 1. Duke Boston College Florida State... 2 Wake Forest OR MORE TACKLES FOR THREE Linebacker Dwayne Norman (114), safety DeVon Edwards (101) and safety Jeremy Cash (101) each tallied 100 or more tackles in Duke was the only team in the ACC with three players over the 100-tackle mark. It was the ninth time in program history, and third consecutive campaign, Duke had at least three players with 100 or more tackles (1976, 1980, 1986, 1990, 1996, 2007, 2013 and 2014). Duke had one of two defensive trios nationally to post 100 or more tackles each, joining Tulsa. FORCES IN THE BACKFIELD Duke tallied 84 tackles for loss during the 2015 campaign, 23 more than the team totaled in The Blue Devils finished tied for the 49th most TFL in the country in 2015 after finishing 103rd in Duke s 386 lost yards on TFL were the 16th most in the country last year and fifth most in the ACC. A closer look at the conference s leaders: No. School TFL Yards 1. Clemson Boston College Pittsburgh Louisville Duke FORCING TURNOVER STREAKS Duke finished the season forcing nine turnovers in the last three games after creating just three TOs in the previous four contests. A closer look at the turnover creating trends the Blue Devils endured during 2015: Games Turnovers Per Game Turnovers SEASON OPENENING STALWARTS Under head coach David Cutcliffe, Duke has allowed an average of points per season opening game. In their last three season openers, however, the Blue Devils have surrendered just 20 total points (6.67 ppg). DEFENSIVE NOTES DL NOTES LB NOTES REPLACING THREE AGAIN Entering the 2014 season, Duke had to replace a trio of starters in Kenny Anunike, Sydney Sarmiento and Justin Foxx. The Blue Devils did it again in 2015, replacing Dezmond Johnson, Jordan DeWalt-Ondijo and Jamal Bruce. This year, the void is left by the since departed Deion Williams, Kyler Brown and Carlos Wray. Looking to replace the trio are redshirt junior end Dominic McDonald, sophomore end Marquies Price and redshirt junior tackle Mike Ramsay. ALBERT TAKES OVER THE LINE The unit also has a new position coach in associate defensive coordinator Ben Albert. Albert arrived at Duke following a three-season stint ( ) coaching the defensive line at Boston College. In 2015, the Eagles led the country in total defense (254.3), third down conversion defense (.241) and tackles for loss per game (9.6) while also ranking among the nation s top five in rushing defense (2nd; 82.8), scoring defense (4th; 15.3) and passing efficiency defense (5th; ). WHAT COMES BACK IN 2016 With three starters having departed, Duke s defensive line lost 47.9 percent of the unit s tackles, but only 39.3 percent of its tackles for lost yardage from a season ago. A closer look at the breakdown of what the defensive line brings back from its 2015 production: Category Percentage Returning Tackles (148-of-284) Tackles for loss (18.5-of-30.5) Sacks (4.0-of-8.0) Quarterback hurries (5-of-15) WOLF LEADS THE PACK Redshirt senior tackle A.J. Wolf is the lone returning starter on the line. The First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America s 54 tackles were the most among defensive linemen a year ago. He added 4.0 tackles for lost yardage, three quarterback pressures and 0.5 sacks during the 2015 campaign. A YEAR OLDER, WISER & BETTER Duke s defensive line figures to prominently feature four sophomores. Redshirt sophomore tackles Edger Cerenord and Quaven Ferguson experience their first action a year ago and will be counted on to take another step forward. Price is slated as a starter at one end. He was one of five true freshmen to play in FROM WALK-ON TO SCHOLARSHIP Redshirt sophomore end Danny Doyle was the feel-good story of Duke s spring practice period, receiving a phone call from his father during a team meeting saying head coach David Cutcliffe had put him on full scholarship. Doyle enters 2016 having played in two career games with two snaps, both as a freshman in TWO RETURN FOR 2016 CAMPAIGN In 2015, Duke featured two new linebackers. The benefit will be felt in 2016 as the Blue Devils return two who both started games last year in redshirt sophomore Tinashe Bere and sophomore Ben Humphreys. Bere booked a team fifth-best 58 tackles last season while Humphreys tallied 31 with a squad secondmost five quarterback pressures. Redshirt freshman Joe Giles-Harris is slated to start alongside Humphreys this season. BERE AMONG TOP ROOKIE TACKLERS IN ACC Bere s 58 tackles were the fifth most on the team and the third most among ACC rookie defenders in 2015, and the most among the conference s freshmen linebackers. A closer look at the leading freshmen tacklers in the league last season: Freshman School Tackles Jordan Whitehead...Pittsburgh Derwin James...Florida State...91 Tinashe Bere...Duke...58 FILLING A NORMAN-SIZED HOLE Current Denver Bronco Dwayne Norman made the most of his one year as a linebacker with the Blue Devils, tallying a squad-best 114 tackles in Norman, an All-ACC honoree, was one of three Blue Devils to book 100 or more tackles last season. PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES With three linebackers returning who played key roles in 2015, but the departure of Norman, Duke brings back 50.6 percent of its tackles from the linebacker position a year ago. A closer look at the breakdown of what the linebackers bring back from 2015: Category Percentage Returning Tackles (121-of-239) Tackles for loss (9.0-of-18.5) Sacks (3.5-of-4.5) Quarterback pressures (8-of-11) GETTING TO THE QUARTERBACK As a freshman in 2015, Humphreys finished second on the team with five quarterback pressures. He trailed only current Carolina Panther Jeremy Cash, who booked eight. BERE IN THE BACKFIELD IN CHARLOTTESVILLE Bere turned in his most impactful game of 2015 at Virginia, slicing into the backfield for a career-high 3.0 tackles for lost yards and finishing with a team second-best seven total stops. Bere s 3.0 TFL are tied for the second most by a freshman in a game in program history, behind only 4.0 by Todd DeLamielleure versus Wake Forest in Duke Football Game Notes 6

7 DB NOTES STARTERS ARE BACK AGAIN Duke enters the 2016 season with three of its five projected starters returning from 2015 in senior cornerback Breon Borders, senior safety Deondre Singleton and redshirt senior safety DeVon Edwards. The lone starter from the 2015 group who departed is unanimous All-America Jeremy Cash, who is now a member of the Carolina Panthers. A closer look at the career starts by Duke s eight primary members of the secondary: Player Career Games/Starts Breon Borders (CB)...40/26 Phillip Carter (S)... 21/2 DeVon Edwards (CB)...40/33 Bryon Fields (CB)...27/14 Corbin McCarthy (S)... 41/6 Jeremy McDuffie (CB)... 13/2 Alonzo Saxton II (S)... 21/8 Deondre Singleton (S)...38/35 TOTAL...241/126 FIELDS BACK ON THE FIELD 2014 starting cornerback Bryon Fields missed the 2015 campaign due to a torn right anterior cruciate ligament suffered on August 26, Fields is slated to return to his starting job this fall. In 27 career games (14 starts), Fields owns 112 tackles, 3.5 tackles for lost yards, 1.0 quarterback sack, one interception, one fumble recovery and eight pass breakups. EDWARDS HUNTING 100 AGAIN Edwards has reached the 100-tackle mark the last two years (133/2014; 101/2015) and is looking to become just the eighth player in Duke history to have three seasons with 100 or more tackles. EDWARDS AMONG TOP TACKLERS Edwards was also tabbed as the No. 7 all-purpose back in the nation by Lindy s Sports. Edwards enters the year ranked fifth among active players nationally in total tackles. A closer look: Player School Tackles Steve Longa...Rutgers Nate Holley...Kent State Dakota Cox...New Mexico Christian Tago...San Jose State DeVon Edwards...Duke BORDERS PICKS Borders is aiming to join John Talley ( ) as the only players in Duke history to lead the team in INTs in four consecutive seasons (outright or tie). Borders leads ACC active players in interceptions (10) and total passes defended (33) while tying for the top spot in pass breakups (23). A closer look at where Borders ranks nationally among active players in career interceptions: Player School Interceptions Desmond King...Iowa Weston Steelhammer...Air Force Skai Moore...South Carolina Breon Borders...Duke...10 Damontae Kazee...San Diego State...10 SINGLETON BEST IN BOWL GAMES In his last game, Singleton booked 12 tackles against Indiana to help Duke to a overtime victory against the Hoosiers. He is the lone player in Duke history with multiple double-digit tackle performances in bowl competition (10 vs. Arizona State in 2014 Hyundai Sun Bowl). BROTHERLY LOVE Singleton will be joined on the team this year by his younger brother Dylan Singleton. Dylan, a true freshman, was charted at No. 282 on the ESPN300 as well as being the No. 10 safety in the country by 247Sports.com and Scout.com and No. 17 by ESPN.com. HITTERS IN THE SECONDARY Of Duke s 84.0 tackles for loss during the 2015 campaign, 35.0 (41.67 percent) came from members of the secondary. TRYING TO BE LIKE EARLY 2015 Duke yielded just three passing touchdowns through the first six games of 2015, tied for the third fewest in the country at that point. In the final seven games, however, Duke allowed 20 passing scores, including five games with three or more passing scores SPECIAL TEAMS TACKLES Player KO P Total Alonzo Saxton II Zach Boden Zavier Carmichael Ben Humphreys Breon Borders Quay Mann Corbin McCarthy Johnathan Lloyd Jeremy McDuffie Tinashe Bere Jake Kite Anthony Nash Returning players only 2016 GAME INFORMATION Game Coin Toss Duke Duke Duke Opponent Kickoff Game Duke Duke Duke Result KO/Rec.
