2 TEAM NOTES LOOKING FOR SEVEN Duke enters the Quick Lane Bowl game looking for its seventh victory of the season. It would mark the fifth time in 10 campaigns under head coach David Cutcliffe reaching the seven-win plateau. Prior to Cutcliffe s arrival in 2008, the Blue Devils had not won seven games in a season since posting eight victories in AIMING FOR A WINNING SEASON With a victory, Duke would earn its fourth winning season in the last five years, the most successful stretch for the Blue Devils since four winning campaigns in five seasons between BOWLING FIVE TIMES IN SIX YEARS The Blue Devils will be playing in a bowl game for the fifth time in six years. Duke had never appeared in consecutive bowl games until the seasons. The Quick Lane Bowl is Duke s 13th overall bowl appearance and fifth since the 1994 season. The Blue Devils are 4-8 in bowl appearances. Duke s last bowl win was a victory in overtime against Indiana on December 26, 2015, in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in New York City. CUTCLIFFE IN BOWL GAMES Cutcliffe is 5-4 as a head coach in bowl games. The Quick Lane Bowl will mark the 27th overall bowl game of his coaching career. LOOKING FOR A 2ND BOWL WIN Cutcliffe is looking for his second bowl victory with the Blue Devils. He would join Bill Murray (1955 Orange Bowl & 1961 Cotton Bowl) as the only Duke coaches with multiple bowl victories. DUKE vs. NORTHERN ILLINOIS The Quick Lane Bowl marks the first meeting between the two. The Blue Devils are 2-0 versus current Mid-American Conference members, beating Ohio University in 1985 (34-13) and 1986 (22-7). DUKE IN MICHIGAN In program history, Duke is 0-5 in Michigan, falling to the University of Michigan in 1960, 1961, 1967, 1977 and GILES-HARRIS NAMED ALL-AMERICA Duke redshirt sophomore linebacker Joe Giles- Harris has been named to four All-America teams, earning second team accolades by the Walter Camp Foundation and CBS Sports, third team recognition from Phil Steele Publications and an honorable mention selection by College Football News. Giles-Harris leads the Blue Devils in tackles (117) and tackles for loss (15.0) while adding 4.5 sacks, one interception, four pass breakups and seven quarterback pressures. TEN TRUE FRESHMEN PLAY Ten true freshmen have played this season, the most by a Cutcliffe squad, topping nine in MARKED IMPROVEMENT Duke has tallied 43 wins during the past five-plus seasons. In the previous 17 seasons, from , Duke recorded 37 victories. A closer look: Seasons Wins Total Games Win % 2012-Present STREAKS OF 4, 6 & 2 Duke opened the season with four consecutive wins before suffering six straight losses. The Blue Devils bounced back with consecutive victories to clinch bowl eligibility. Since 2002, Duke is one of five teams to lose six straight games and qualify for a bowl. Trailing by seven, the Blue Devils reached Virginia s 40-yard line, Florida State s 30-yard line and Pittsburgh s 22-yard line on their final drives. The Baltimore, Md., product has collected 39 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, four quarterback pressures, two passes defended and an interception. Dimukeje is the lone freshman ranked within the top 45 of the ACC in total TFL. With Dimukeje s selection, the Blue Devils have had a Freshman All-America for 15 straight years. 2 ANOTHER FOURTH QUARTER W Duke entered the fourth quarter at Wake Forest trailing The Blue Devils bounced back with the final 14 points of the contest to win, The Blue Devils are up to 14 fourth quarter or overtime wins since the start of the 2013 campaign. NEAR THE TOP IN THE COASTAL Since the start of the 2013 season, Duke has captured 36 regular season wins, the third most in the ACC Coastal Division during the span. Miami Virginia Tech Duke North Carolina Georgia Tech Pittsburgh Virginia GSR STRONG AGAIN FOR DUKE Statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) were released November 8 by the NCAA with Duke (97) among four FBS institutions with an overall GSR total of 97 percent or better, joining Notre Dame (98), Northwestern (97) and Stanford (97). Duke football ranks tied for third among FBS schools with a 96 percent rate and joins Northwestern (99), South Carolina (98), Notre Dame (96) and Stanford (96) as the only programs with a 96 rate or better. DUKE S MOST WINS IN 5 YEARS Duke is in the midst of one of the winningest five-year stretches in program history. The Blue Devils 37 wins in the last four-plus seasons put them in the top eight. The institutions receive rankings based on some 15 measures of academic quality, including retention, graduation rate performance, faculty resources, financial resources and alumni giving. Of the top 13 schools on the list, only three have FBS football programs. 3 OFFENSIVE NOTES OFFENSE IN DUKE S SIX WINS Duke s offense has been the key in the team s six wins, averaging nearly 40 points per contest compared to slightly more than 12 points per loss. A closer look at Duke s offensive production in wins and losses this season: Result Yds/Play Yds/Game Points/Game Wins Losses ENDING THE SLIDE During Duke s two-game winning streak at the end of the year to reach bowl eligibility, the team scored nine offensive touchdowns. In the previous four games, the Blue Devils combined for five TDs. The Blue Devils have six rushing touchdowns in the last three games after totaling four in the previous six contests. Duke has four passing scores in the last two games after totaling four in the previous eight contests. TURNOVER IMPROVEMENT Duke ranks 59th of the 130 FBS programs with 18 turnovers lost. A year ago, the Blue Devils finished 94th nationally with 23 turnovers lost. RED ZONE SUCCESS Duke has scored 90 points in the red zone over the last three games. In the previous three contests, Duke combined for 16 red zone points. SUCCESS ON 4TH DOWN In the last two games, Duke has gone five-of-six (.833) on fourth down tries. For the season, the Blue Devils rank fourth in the ACC and 26th nationally with a.625 conversion mark on fourth down. A CLEAN SHEET Duke s offensive line did not allow a sack at Wake Forest in the regular season finale. It was Duke s first game without a sack allowed since the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on December 27, BRANDNER FULL OF GOOD WORKS Redshirt senior offensive tackle Gabe Brandner was one of 11 student-athletes named to the FBS Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Brandner is the ninth Duke player to be honored by the AFCA, and the sixth in as many years. Brandner joins Zaid Abdul-Aleem (1994), Re quan Boyette (2008), Bryan Morgan (2010), Sean Renfree (2012), Dave Harding (2013), Laken Tomlinson (2014), Kelby Brown (2015) and DeVon Edwards (). BRANDNER A SEMIFINALIST Brandner was also announced as a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy. Brandner, a recipient of a ACC Top 6 for Service honor for excellence in community service, has been extremely involved with the local community, serving with the Lideres Unidos Futbol Club, National Inclusion Project, Habitat for Humanity and Kid s Club in Oxford Manor. A PERFORMANCE Redshirt sophomore quarterback Daniel Jones turned in the second game in program history on September 9 against Northwestern. Jones effort was the 14th performance in ACC history. Northwestern JONES TDs ACCOUNTED FOR Jones threw two TD passes and ran for another score in the regular season finale at Wake Forest, marking the eighth game of his career, and second straight, with three or more TDs accounted for. In just two seasons, Jones has accounted for 41 touchdowns, six shy of entering Duke s top 10 chart. JONES AMONG PASSING LEADERS During his two years as a starter, Jones has become one of the nation s elite throwers, ranking among the active FBS leaders in passes per game (9th/35.13) and completions per game (12th/20.83). WILSON S ALL-PURPOSE YARDS In his final game at Duke, senior Shaun Wilson has a chance to hit 5,000 career all-purpose yards, entering the game with 4,773. Wilson would join Chris Douglas ( /5,753) and Jamison Crowder ( /5,575) as the lone Blue Devils to reach 5,000 career all-purpose yards. Wilson is already the first player in Duke history to post multiple seasons with 1,500+ all-purpose yards, with 1,620 in and 1,581 in. Among active FBS players, Wilson s 4,773 career all-purpose yards rank 14th. THREE WITH FIVE+ RUSHING TDs For just the fifth time in program history, Duke has three players with five or more rushing touchdowns with Jones (six), redshirt freshman running back Brittain Brown (six) and Wilson (five). Duke has also had three or more with five rushing scores in 1936, 1937, 1941 and The Blue Devils (3) join Clemson (4) and N.C. State (3) as the only ACC programs with three or more players with five rushing scores. RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS Duke has 19 rushing touchdowns this season and has had 19 or more for five consecutive years and in seven of the last eight campaigns. In the 30 years prior to head coach David Cutcliffe taking over the program, the Blue Devils had reached 19 rushing touchdowns just twice. NEARLY THREE WITH 500+ Duke has a chance to turn in the first year in program history having three players reach 500 rushing yards. Wilson (743) and Brown (660) have already surpassed the mark while Jones is just 68 yards away (432). 3 RAHMING REACHES 2,000 & 700 In the regular season finale at Wake Forest, wide receiver T.J. Rahming become the 10th Blue Devil to reach the 2,000-yard career receiving yards plateau. He enters the Quick Lane Bowl with 2,046 yards, the 10th most in a Duke career. Rahming s 733 receiving yards this season and 742 in give him two years with 700 or more receiving yards, tied for the fifth most in a career at Duke. Among active FBS players, Rahming s 174 career receptions rank him 18th while his 4.83 receptions per game stand 14th. WILSON S RECEPTIONS Wilson owns a team third-most 32 catches, tied for the 12th most by a Duke running back in a season. All five catches resulted in a first down or touchdown. This season, the trio owns 35 receptions, 344 yards and seven scores. Duke has 14 total receiving scores this season, half by tight ends. Of the Blue Devils last five scoring passes, three have gone to tight ends. Koppenhaver (3), Wilson (3), Helm (2) and Gray (2) are the lone Blue Devils with multiple receiving scores this season. WILSON S RECEIVING SCORES Against Georgia Tech, Wilson caught two touchdown passes, covering 11 and 16 yards. Wilson s three receiving TDs this season are tied for the fourth most by a Duke running back in a year in program history. Wilson s five career receiving scores are tied for the third most by a Duke running back. Wilson also threw a touchdown against the Yellow Jackets, tossing a four-yard jump pass to Helm in the fourth quarter. BROWN UP DUKE S FROSH CHARTS Brown scored his sixth rushing touchdown of the season at Wake Forest, giving him three consecutive games with a score. His six ground TDs are tied for the third most by a Duke rookie. Brown s 660 rushing yards are the second most by a rookie while his 856 all-purpose yards are the eighth most by a freshman at Duke.

4 DEFENSIVE NOTES AMONG THE NATION S BEST Duke enters the Quick Lane Bowl with a defense that ranks among the top 25 in the nation in multiple categories. The Blue Devils rank second in the ACC in passing yards allowed per game, their best showing in the David Cutcliffe era. The last two years, Duke finished 10th (239.75/) and 12th (240.92/2015) in the league in passing yards surrendered per game. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Joe Giles-Harris was named one of 18 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the nation s top defensive player by the Maxwell Football Club. DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS Duke is tied for fifth nationally in defensive touchdowns scored this season with four, the program single-season record. Redshirt senior cornerback Bryon Fields Jr. has returned two interceptions for touchdowns while junior linebacker Ben Humphreys and McDuffie each have one. FOUR PICK 6s IN A CAREER Fields Jr. intercepted a Chazz Surratt pass in the fourth quarter at North Carolina and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown to seal Duke s victory. The INT return for TD was the Duke program-record fourth of Fields Jr. s career. He is tied for second among active FBS players in career interception returns for touchdowns. 5 SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES WILSON BACK FOR KOR Senior Shaun Wilson is back as Duke s kickoff return specialist. He sits at 1,678 kickoff return yards in his career, the sixth most in program history. His two kickoff returns for touchdowns are tied for the third most at Duke. Wilson s career kickoff return average is the 18th best among active FBS players. Wilson s two kickoff returns for touchdowns are tied for the 15th most among active FBS players. HOLMQUIST FOR PARKER Following the dismissal of redshirt sophomore specialist Austin Parker from the program in early December, redshirt senior William Holmquist is expected to serve as Duke s top kicker and punter in the Quick Lane Bowl. After graduating from Tufts University, Holmquist transferred to Duke in July after playing three seasons ( ) for the Jumbos, where he was the primary kicker and punter. In his Tufts career, Holmquist converted 21-of-31 field goals (.677) with a long of 48 yards and drilled 57-of-62 extra points (.919). He also punted 153 times for 5,649 yards (36.92) with a long of 64 and 41 boots downed inside the opponent 20 yard line. This year with the Blue Devils, Holmquist has converted his only PAT try, against Georgia Tech.
