Duke is 30-9 under Cutcliffe when scoring at least 30 points. SIRK TAKES OVER UNDER CENTER After a year of learning under 2014 starting QB Anthony Boone, redshirt junior Thomas Sirk will step into the starting role. Last season Sirk was used primarily as a short yardage and redzone quarterback. Sirk redshirted his true freshman season of 2012 and missed the entire 2013 campaign while recovering from surgery performed on April 10, 2013, to repair ruptured right Achilles tendon. BOEHME ON DECK Redshirt sophomore Parker Boehme will serve as the primary backup to Sirk entering the season. Boehme, who enrolled at Duke in January, 2013, redshirted in 2013 and served as the No. 3 quarterback in He experienced action in three games for 15 total snaps, completing one-of-two passes and rushing for 14 yards. PRIOR SUCCESS AGAINST TULANE Last September at Wallace Wade Stadium against Tulane, Sirk led Duke with 94 rushing yards, including a career best 50-yard dash and a 43-yard scamper during the game s opening drive, which he capped with a one-yard touchdown run. He threw one pass in the game and it fell incomplete. QB RUSHING INTO THE END ZONE Sirk ran for eight touchdowns in 2014, tied for the fourth most by a Duke quarterback in a season. Brandon Connette set the record with 14 in LITTLE PROBLEMS IN BIG MOMENTS Sirk is expected to make his first career start on Thursday night, but he has already provided gamewinning performances. A closer look: Sirk is the only active quarterback in the nation to have produced two game-winning touchdowns (rush or pass) in the fourth quarter or overtime in 2014 as an exclusive reserve (zero starts). Sirk is the only active quarterback in the country to have accounted for 10 or more total touchdowns in 2014 as an exclusive reserve (zero starts). Sirk became the third player in Duke history to rush and throw for fourth quarter or overtime gamewinning TDs in a single season (throw vs. Virginia in fourth quarter/rush at Pittsburgh in second overtime). THIN ON EXPERIENCE The three active quarterbacks on Duke s roster have combined to throw just 16 career passes, with 11 completions and three touchdowns. Projected starter Sirk has thrown one career pass in a road game, during week two at Troy in He tossed a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end David Reeves in the second quarter to put Duke ahead 17-14, a lead the Blue Devils did not relinquish in winning Sirk owns 10 completions. In comparison, redshirt senior punter Will Monday has connected on four passes in his three seasons, just six less than Sirk. A NEW CORPS TAKES OVER Gone from Duke s offense is Jamison Crowder, who finished his career with 283 receptions, tied with former Blue Devil Conner Vernon ( /283) for the Duke and ACC career records. Crowder also owns the second most receiving yards in program history with 3,641, the third most in the ACC. Leading the way this year will be senior Max McCaffrey, who has caught 65 passes for 698 yards and seven touchdowns in his career. McCaffrey is one of only four active wide receivers in the ACC to have registered 25 or more receptions, 250 or more receiving yards and three or more TD receptions in each of the past two seasons, joining Tyler Boyd of Pittsburgh, Quinshad Davis of North Carolina and Ryan Switzer of North Carolina. McCaffrey is the son of former NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, who played on three Super Bowl championship teams (XXIX, XXXII and XXXIII) and was selected to one Pro Bowl (1998). A closer look at the career receiving numbers of all six wide receivers listed on Duke s two-deep: Player Receptions Yards YPC TDs McCaffrey Barnes Nash Smith Rahming Taylor BARNES LOOKING TO INCREASE IMPACT During the final three games of the 2014 season, junior Johnell Barnes began to increase his production, a trait that the Blue Devils will need for a full 2015 campaign. A closer look at Barnes totals in his first 10 games compared with the last three during his sophomore year: Games Receptions Yards YPG TDs THE SECURITY BLANKET RETURNS Granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, redshirt senior tight end Braxton Deaver is back with the Blue Devils after missing the 2014 season while recovering from knee surgery to repair a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. Deaver is a preseason All-ACC choice by Lindy s Sports (1st team) and Athlon Sports (3rd team). Among active tight ends in the ACC, Deaver ranks first in both pass receptions (54/tied with Wake Forest s Cam Serigne) and receiving yardage (707). During Deaver s last season on the field, in 2013, he was named to both the ACC and national All- Bowl Teams by ESPN. He started all 14 games and caught 46 passes for 600 yards (13.04) and four TDs. In the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Texas A&M, he recorded a career-high 116 receiving yards on six catches. Powell enters 2015 with 1,055 while Duncan owns 1,115. Duncan remains out indefinitely with a partial tear of his right pectoral muscle. Powell and sophomore Shaun Wilson provide Duke with one of two returning RB duos in the ACC to have rushed for 500 or more yards each in 2014, joining NC State s tandem of Shadrach Thornton (907) and Matt Dayes (573). Martin enters 2014 with 52 career field goals, trailing only Lenhardt (55) for the Duke record. Martin has converted a Duke-record 110 consecutive PATs. Martin begins the campaign owning 154 career extra points, the eighth most in ACC history. DYNAMIC DUO Martin and senior punter Will Monday are the active career leaders at their positions within the ACC. Martin is the active league leader in total points, field goals and PATs made while standing second in field goal percentage. Monday is the ACC s active leader in career punting average (43.45). 6 FEW POINTS PER GAME ALLOWED The Blue Devils yielded points a game, the fourth best mark since the start of the 1976 season and best since points per game in A closer look at the five fewest opponent point per game totals since 1976: Year Points/Game Allowed italics denotes David Cutcliffe Era 20 OR LESS SEVEN TIMES Duke held seven opponents to under 20 points in 2014, its best year since keeping eight under 20 in In comparison, during the 2001 season, Duke had 10 quarters allowing 20 or more points as foes averaged points per game. Against nonconference opponents in 2014, Duke allowed just 16.4 points per game, the 12th best mark in the country. 13 OR FEWER POINTS OVERALL Duke held Syracuse to 10 points on November 8, marking the fifth time during the campaign the Blue Devils held a foe to 13 or fewer points. In head coach David Cutcliffe s previous six seasons, the Blue Devils had just seven games keeping foes to 13 or fewer points. Duke had not held five opponents to 13 or fewer points in the same season since 1971, when it held six to 13 or fewer. FOURTH QUARTER LESS THAN A TD ALLOWED In Duke s last 27 games, opponents have scored 121 fourth quarter points, an average of 4.48 per contest. In 2014, Duke shut out Troy, Kansas, Tulane, Virginia, Syracuse and Wake Forest in the fourth. AMONG THE TOP 25 IN OVERALL QB RATING Duke limited opposing quarterbacks to a rating, good for the 23rd best defensive mark in the country. LOCKED UP ON THIRD AND FOURTH DOWNS The Blue Devils held opponents to a 34.4 percent conversion rate on third down in 2014, the 15th best defensive percentage in the nation and the fourth best in the ACC, behind only Clemson (1st nationally/27.4), Virginia Tech (4th nationally/28.8) and Louisville (10th nationally/31.8). Foes were even more unsuccessful on fourth down, converting 29.0 percent of the time. The fourth down defense was the 11th best nationally and second best in the ACC, trailing Virginia Tech s 27.8 percent mark. SEASON OPENENING STALWARTS Under Cutcliffe, Duke has allowed an average of points per season opening game. In their last two season openers, however, the Blue Devils have surrendered just 13 total points. DEFENSIVE NOTES DEFENSIVE LINE NOTES LINEBACKER NOTES REPLACING THREE AGAIN Entering the 2014 season, Duke had to replace a trio of starters in Kenny Anunike, Sydney Sarmiento and Justin Foxx. The Blue Devils are tasked again with replacing three starters as Dezmond Johnson, Jordan DeWalt-Ondijo and Jamal Bruce all graduated. Looking to replace the trio are two redshirt seniors in defensive ends Kyler Brown and Britton Grier. Filling the middle will be redshirt junior defensive tackle A.J. Wolf and senior returning starter Carlos Wray. McGRATH TAKES OVER FOR TACKLES The unit also has a new position coach as graduate assistant coach Clayton McGrath will focus his efforts on the team s tackles. McGrath takes over for the departed Rick Petri, who is now the defensive line coach at Louisiana Tech. Leading the defensive ends, along with outside linebackers, will be assistant defensive coordinator Jim Collins. FEW BIG HITS RETURNING IN THE GROUP With three starters having departed, Duke s defensive line lost 56.2 percent of the unit s tackles and 78.8 percent of its tackles for lost yardage from a season ago. A closer look at the breakdown of what the defensive line brings back from its 2014 production: Category Percentage Returning Tackles (102-of-233) Tackles for loss (5.5-of-26.0) Sacks (2.5-of-13.0) Quarterback hurries (8-of-19) WRAY WILL BE THE LEADER Wray is the lone returning starter on the line. His 39 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks from 2015 are the most among returning Duke linemen. A SPOT FOR YOUTH Of the 11 members of Duke s two-deep along the defensive line, six are juniors or seniors. There are two redshirt freshmen with reserve defensive tackles Quaven Ferguson and Edgar Cerenord. Both redshirted in Ferguson was the 2013 Class 4A Upper State Lineman of the Year by the South Carolina Football Coaches Association while Cerenord was charted as the No. 39 defensive tackle in the country by 247Sports.com when he departed American Heritage High School in Miami. Defensive tackle Brandon Boyce and defensive end Marquies Price are two of five true freshmen to appear on Duke s initial two deep. ONE BROWN BROTHER AGAIN It was supposed to be the final campaign for redshirt seniors Kyler and Kelby Brown. Kelby missed all of 2014 after suffering a torn left ACL and suffered the same injury in late June, ending his career. The two led all active brother combinations nationally with 339 career tackles entering TWO NEW LINEBACKERS Due to the career-ending knee injury to 2013 All- ACC performer Kelby Brown and the graduation of the ACC s 2014 leading tackler David Helton, two new linebackers will be starting for Duke in Sophomore Zavier Carmichael will fill in the Mike role vacated by Brown while senior Dwayne Norman shifts from safety to Will. Norman has practiced at linebacker since spring drills. Carmichael played in all 13 games as a rookie, posting 20 tackles and two interceptions, both in the red zone to halt potential scoring drives. In 36 career games, all at safety, Norman owns 12 starts with 126 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries, two caused fumbles, three PBUs and two quarterback pressures. LITTLE LEFT FROM 2014 With Helton, Kelby Brown and 2014 senior C.J. France all not on the field this year, Duke s linebackers return just 19.8 percent of its tackles from a year ago. A closer look at the breakdown of what the linebackers bring back from 2014: Category Percentage Returning Tackles (50-of-252) Tackles for loss (2.5-of-9.0) Sacks (0.0-of-2.0) Quarterback hurries (0-of-5) DIVIDING THE COACHING DUTIES Following the departure of defensive line coach Petri, Duke reshuffled its coaching deck and handed inside linebacker duties to defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. Outside linebacker duties remain with assistant defensive coordinator Collins. WHAT A DIFFERENCE TWO YEARS MAKES When Duke won the ACC Coastal Division championship in 2013, the Blue Devils had Helton and Kelby Brown starting at linebacker. Helton graduated following the 2014 campaign and Brown s career was effectively ended after 2013 due to consecutive season-ending knee injuries. Brown was a first team All-ACC linebacker in 2013, as was Helton in Helton paced the league in tackles per game the last two seasons. Brown finished his career with 242 tackles while Helton owns 347, the 10th most in Duke history. The four linebackers listed on the Blue Devils two-deep at the beginning of the campaign have a combined 176 tackles, with 126 (71.6 percent) coming from Norman, all while he was playing safety. FEW STARTS AMONG LINEBACKERS Duke s linebacking corps has the third fewest combined starts among Division I programs with just five on its roster. A closer look: No. School Linebacker Starts 1. 7 SECONDARY NOTES FOUR OF FIVE STARTERS ARE BACK Duke enters the 2015 season with four of its five projected starters returning from 2014 in junior cornerback Breon Borders, junior safety Deondre Singleton, redshirt junior safety DeVon Edwards and redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash. The lone member from the 2014 group not slated to start in 2015 is junior cornerback Bryon Fields, who suffered a season-ending right ACL injury during the final week of August. Duke s secondary was ranked as the sixth best nationally by Lindy s Sports in the preseason. 14 TOTAL LETTERMEN RETURN TO SECONDARY The Blue Devils awarded 15 varsity letters to secondary members in Of those 15 letterwinners, 14 return to the team this year. The lone departure was by walk-on safety Christian Conway, who transferred to Columbia for his final year of eligibility. ALL-AMERICA ACCOLDES FOR CASH Cash earned preseason All-America selections from Athlon Sports (2nd team), ESPN (1st team), CBS Sports (2nd team), Lindy s (1st team), Phil Steele s College Football Preview (1st team), Sports Illustrated (1st team) and Sporting News (2nd team). By earning second team All-America honors from USA Today in 2013 and second team accolades from the Walter Camp Foundation and Football Writers Association of America in 2014, Cash joins Joe Brunansky ( ), Fred Crawford ( ), Jamison Crowder ( ), Robert Gantt ( ), Art Gregory ( ), Clarkston Hines ( ), Ed Meadows ( ), Bill Milner ( ) and Ace Parker ( ) as the only Duke players to earn first, second or third team All-America honors in multiple seasons STARTING LINEUPS THE 100, 10.0, 5.0 CLUB Cash was the only defensive back in the country to have tallied 100 or more tackles, 10.0 or more tackles for loss and 5.0 or more sacks in Cash was one of just 10 FBS defensive backs to have recorded 110 or more tackles last season. Cash is only the second Duke player with 100 or more stops in his first two years on the active roster, joining Erwin Sampson ( ). Cash begins the 2015 campaign 65 tackles shy of becoming the 16th player in Duke history to reach the 300-tackle mark. EDWARDS ENDS ON A HOT STREAK Edwards ended last year as one of the primary pieces in Duke s defensive plan. He led Duke with 71 tackles during the final six games of the campaign and finished second on the squad with 5.0 tackles for lost yardage and 3.5 sacks during the span. A closer look at Edwards production during his first seven games and the final six: Games Tackles/G TFL Sacks FF TAKING THE BALL AWAY Edwards forced five fumbles in 2014, tied for the second most in a year in program history. Nationally, the five forced fumbles ranked second to only Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Rotary Lombardi Award and Chuck Bednarik Award winner Scooby Wright from Arizona. BORDERS PICKS Borders led Duke in interceptions for the second consecutive season in 2014 to join Wyatt Smith ( ), Alex Green ( ) and John Talley ( ) as the only players in Duke history to pace the team (outright or tie) in INTs as both a freshman and sophomore. SECONDARY PRESSURE Of Duke s 61.0 tackles for loss during the 2014 campaign, 25.0 (40.98 percent), came from members of the secondary. Similarly, the Blue Devils booked 29.0 sacks last season with 13.0 (44.83 percent) by the secondary. FEW PASSING TOUCHDOWNS ALLOWED Duke allowed just 14 passing touchdowns last year, tied for the 13th fewest in the country and tied for the fourth fewest surrendered in the ACC, trailing only Clemson (12), Wake Forest (12) and Virginia Tech (13) SPECIAL TEAMS TACKLES Player KO P Total Corbin McCarthy Zavier Carmichael Dwayne Norman David Reeves Bryon Fields Terrence Alls Joseph Ajeigbe Jake Kite Zach Muñiz Alonzo Saxton II Johnell Barnes Phillip Carter Thomas Hennessy Quay Mann Shaquille Powell Deion Williams Kyler Brown Jeremy Cash DeVon Edwards Evrett Edwards Ross Martin Returning players only Offense QB RB TE WR WR WR LT LG C RG RT Elon Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser at Troy Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser Kansas Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser Tulane Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Robinson Skura Tomlinson Blaser at Miami Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser at Georgia Tech Boone Snead Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser Virginia Boone Snead Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser at Pittsburgh Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser at Syracuse Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser Virginia Tech Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser North Carolina Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser Wake Forest Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser Arizona State Boone Powell Reeves McCaffrey Crowder Blakeney Cofield Patrick Skura Tomlinson Blaser Defense DE NG DT DE MLB WLB CB CB S (S) S (B) S (R) Elon Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards at Troy Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton Holmes Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards Kansas Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton Holmes Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards Tulane Jones Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton Holmes Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards at Miami Jones Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton Holmes Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards at Georgia Tech Jones Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton Norman Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards Virginia Jones Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards at Pittsburgh Jones Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards at Syracuse Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards Virginia Tech Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards North Carolina Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards Wake Forest Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards Arizona State Johnson Bruce Wray DeWalt-Ondijo Helton France Fields Borders Cash Singleton Edwards 2015 Duke Football Game Notes 7
