6 Lorain County Boys Basketball Preview By: Tim Alcorn While the calendar year of 2013 doesn t end for another month or so, a new year will start well ahead of January 1, If the old saying is indeed wait til next year, then next year is now upon us for the area boys high school basketball teams that have been anxiously awaiting the start of this season since the last one ended back in early March. I have been anxious for next year on the hardwood since that time as well, so let s take a look at what s in store for the area squads. We begin in Elyria, where the Pioneers come off an 18 win season, but must look to replace the scoring and leadership of Mr. Basketball 2013 Kody Bender. Elyria coach Brett Larrick will count on his outstanding guard Isaiah Walton, already a Division 1 signee, as well as returnees Anthony Duckett, Hunter Parsh and Jarred Schultz, to lead the Pioneers to another successful season. Things will be interesting in Lorain, as John Rositano returns as the boys head coach, after many years at Amherst leading the Lady Comets. The Titans finished last year, but have some outstanding talent in returnees Rashod Berry, and Eddie Williamson with Gerald Howard expected to contribute as well. Lorain will certainly develop over the course of the season. One of the great stories of the season was the magnificent season at Columbia, which racked up a 23-2 season under first year head coach Larry Babics, and won the Stripes Divison championship in the Patriot 4 Linda Murphy/CT Returnee (and D1 signee) Isaiah Walton is ready for the season! Athletic Conference. Stalwarts such as Jay Banyasz, Brandon Severo and David Delahunty will be back for the Raiders. Another great season out of the PAC Stripes Division was Oberlin, who won the Wooster District championship, and finished the year at While Kurt Russell needs to replace Jason Moore, he has tremendous returnees in Charles Lewis, Devaunte Houghland and Malcolm Allen. Clearview will certainly be in the thick of things in the Stripes, as veteran coach John Szalay welcomes back some outstanding talent including Gerrell Williams, Daimon Knowles and Eric Burkey. And coach Szalay will also have a valuable assistant sitting next to him this year, as Bob Walsh will return to the place where his legendary Lorain County career began, on the Clearview bench, working alongside coach Szalay. Lutheran West was very competitive under Alan Januzzi last year and figures to be formidable in the Stripes race, while Brooklyn and Fairview look to rebound off tough seasons last year. In the Stars Division, Firelands is the defending champion, and the Falcons now look to build off that success under second year head coach Brett Bartlett. Logan Sittinger, Cole Sklarek and Casey Smith are key returnees for Firelands, as the Falcons try to defend their title. Keystone hovered near the.500 mark last year, and another second year head coach, the Wildcats Jeff Holzauer will build his team around CJ Conrad, Matt

7 Bastock, Collin Fitzgerald and Brando Kuhl. Wellington struggled through a tough season last year, and Dan Gundert will try to turn things around this year. Dylan Kidd is a key returnee as is Chase Bealer who missed all last year for the Dukes with a knee injury. Another team that fell below the.500 mark was Brookside so the Cards will be on a mission to have a winning season this year. Brent Schrempf welcomes back Kelvin Jones, Mitto Agosto and Cameron Drew to build around. Buckeye and Black River will round out the Stars Division. The two Lorain County teams in the Southwestern Conference didn t contend for the conference crown, but had respectable seasons. At Amherst, the Comets hovered at or around.500 all year, and coach John Srnis expects to take a step forward this season with several returnees including the tremendous Garrett Klekota, and also Adam Srnis and Matt Kneisel. Avon Lake was also very competitive last year, and coach Eric Smith will welcome several guys back for the Shoremen including Seth Muck, Brad Hamilton and Christian Jones. Brecksville won the SWC last year (and the Midview District Title as well) and has some outstanding talent returning, as do the Westlake Demons under head coach Shawn Hood. Olmsted Falls, the consolidated Berea/Midpark and North Olmsted are the other three teams in the league. It was a great race in the West Shore last year, where Rocky River and Avon shared the conference championship. Avon head coach Kevin Supara lost several players off that championship team, but returns sharpshooter Brian Kelly, as well as senior Jordan Lawrence and Zack Torbert to lead the Eagles attack. Elyria Catholic will welcome Phil Kuchta back to the bench as head coach, and it promises to be an interesting year for the Panthers who come off a season. Jeremy Holley will be back on the hardwood after sitting out last year due to injury, and Ceeven Shelton and Connor Riddell will add some punch to the lineup as well. Midview was around.500 throughout the campaign, but lost their primary weapon Wes Davic to graduation. Troy DiFranco will rely on veterans such as long range bomber Grant Overy, as well as Matt Randolph and Jack Duffner to keep the Middies in the WSC hunt. Vermilion heads into the year with high hopes. Kurt Habermehl s Sailors were last year, but return some terrific talent in Cameron Kuhn, as well as Forrest Boyd and Kyle Nader. It was rough sledding for North Ridgeville under first year head coach Bryan Morgan last season, but the Rangers have some key guys back including Dennis Millgard, Matt Clark and Nolan Freeman, so the win total may climb in this campaign. Bay and Lakewood will be the other teams in the West Shore in At Open Door, head coach Todd Wright knows Danny Stintsman and Andrew Patterson will be key pieces for the Patriots, as they look to rebound from what was a tough campaign Fresh off an incredible football season, Jay Banyasz flips to basketball mode. last season. For Lake Ridge, also coming off a challenging campaign last year, Chris Miller had an outstanding year last season and will be counted on to provide leadership for the Royals. At First Baptist, Chase Parker had some big games last year, and he will lead the Sabres, who will try to reverse their fortunes from a rough campaign. Looking at the names mentioned in the above article there is going to be some terrific talent on the hardwood this year. No wonder coaches were looking forward to next year at the end of tournament time last year. Next year has indeed arrived, long before January 1st. Let s get it cranked up! Ray Riedel/CT 5

14 Lorain County Girls Basketball Preview By: Rob Polinsky There will be three new coaches in Lorain County Girls basketball for the upcoming season. Last season Amherst lost to Elyria in the district semifinals in the division 1 district tournament held at EC. Who knew at the time that John Rositano and Mike Walsh would both be coaching for the final time vs. one another that evening. John left the girls job at Amherst to become the head boys coach at Lorain High and Mike Walsh stepped down at Elyria to become an assistant for the Elyria High boys and Coach Brett Larrick. In another coaching change, longtime boys coach Tom Thompson will be back on the sidelines as the new head coach at Columbia High School. Taking over for Rositano at Amherst Steele is Kevin Collins, last season they went 17-5 before bowing out to Elyria. He returns Brooke Wallace, last year as a sophomore she averaged 12 points and 9 rebounds a game. Some of the other returners include Sher Champe, Mallory Sliman, Brianna Crapo and Gabrielle Basinski. Bryan Arth is the new head coach for the Elyria Lady Pioneers; Arth has had a very successful coaching career in northeast Ohio at several different schools. His resume includes a state championship as head coach at Cleveland Central Catholic. Tom Thompson returns to Ray Riedel/CT She may be just a sophmore, but Riley Schill has all the right moves the sidelines at Columbia. Thompson who s previously coached the boys at Strongsville and Rocky River inherits a Raiders club who finished last season at Some of his returners include seniors Emily Viccaroni and Alexis Bycznski, juniors Amy Mirecki, Shelby Friedel and sophomore Alison Schafer. Schafer averaged nearly 15ppg last season. Brookside comes off an 8-15 record including 7-9 in the PAC. Three of the five starters for the Cards return this year including seniors Erika Elias and Arianna Sanchez and junior Vanessa Vanzant. Elias averaged nearly 11ppg and 4 assists, Sanchez kicked in with 8ppg and 10 boards per contest. Vanzant is a very strong defensive player and averages 3 steals per game. Coach Tom Moyer is back for his second season behind the bench for the Cards. Over at Avon Lake, Dave Zvara returns to coach the Shoregals who last year went 4-19 overall and 2-12 in the SWC. Returning starters are seniors Logan LeDuc and Emily Nicholas and junior Ali Balthaser. Another key returner is junior Kay Butrey; the Shoregals lost three seniors from last year s team. Players looking to help this year from last year s JV team include juniors Gianna Guzzo and Michaela Frank and sophomores Sarah Winkel and Hannah Nicholas. According to Zvara team quickness and overall depth are some of the strengths of this year s team. 12

15 According to Elyria Catholic Coach Eric Rothgery, his team will be young but experienced. The Lady Panthers went 21-5 overall last season. Returning starters include sophomore Riley Schill 10.8 ppg, 4.6 rebounds and 6 assists per game. Sophomore Josie Carandang brings 7ppg, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game from last year as a freshmen. Amy Esser returns to North Ridgeville, her team went 6-17 last year. Also returning for the Lady Rangers are senior Isabella Pecchia and junior Alyssa Riley. Pecchia averaged 8 ppg and 8 boards a game last year as a junior. She battled with an ankle injury for much of the season, she is 100% healthy this year and the Rangers are counting on her. Riley averaged 10ppg last season along with 42 three pointers. Overall Coach Esser is optimistic this season they hope to blend their returning talent and their young players to have a good season. At Firelands long time coach Dave Kudela brings back a squad that went 17-6 overall and 15-1 in the PAC. Individuals coming back include seniors Casey Morrissette and Alyssa Melendez. Morrissette had 12ppg and 4 boards last season, Melendez avg 3ppg. Sophomore Keely Hall had 7ppg and 7 rebounds per game last season. Others with experience returning are seniors Becky Myers and Haleigh Bari. Kudela anticipates having a strong team that has depth this season with the addition of several JV players that went 18-2 last year. Elsewhere in the county Avon returns a lot of young players who gained experience last year for Coach Meghan Banks. Nick Dimacchia always has a competitive team at Clearview, last year they had a very good season and they will try to improve on that. Scott Terry s Keystone Lady Wildcats took their lumps last year as they were very very young. The group is a year older and with the incoming freshmen class coming in they should be better this season. Lake Ridge Academy went all the way to the regionals last season before bowing out to perennial power Hiland at the Massillon Perry regional. Coach Lisa Medvetz and her team will have a tough act to follow coming off that outstanding season. Linda Murphy/CT Expect Amherst s Brooke Wallace to return even stronger. Midview is hoping for better things this year after some tough seasons the last couple of years. Kari Cooley returns for her second season as the head coach of the Oberlin Phoenix. Likewise Colin Irish will be back for his second season with Vermilion, the Lady Sailors had an outstanding season last year making it all the way to the district championship game last March in Elyria. Chris Reutepohler will continue to try and get Wellington to improve. Likewise Bud Turner and Randy Mohr look for improvement at Open Door and First Baptist. Our coverage will begin November 23 with the Lorain County Holiday Tournament, WEOL and WEOL.com will broadcast 15 regular season contests. Here s hoping for another outstanding season of girl s basketball in

24 Cleveland Cavaliers Season Preview By: Rick Noland We re going to have players around us that are selfless, that are accountable and that have a blind trust in the group. Once we establish that culture, once we establish that foundation, and it s from ownership on down, then we will be able to start crafting our identity. Our identity will be one of a tough-minded, physical, defense-first group that is smart in all aspects of the game on both sides of the floor. Our guys will feel it, they will breathe it, they will touch it and they will see it from myself and my staff on a daily basis. I say daily, because this is a process. I can t wait to get started. Those were among the first words uttered by Mike Brown at an April 24 press conference to announce he had been rehired as Cavaliers coach. They ve been repeated, in one form or another, dozens of times since and not just by Brown. From Anderson Varejao to Tristan Thompson to Alonzo Gee to even jaded members of the media, everyone, it seems, is buying into Brown s defense-first mantra. The most vocal proponent has been Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving, who didn t play a lot of it over his first two seasons in the NBA. More impressive, the 21- year-old is not only saying all the right things, he s going out on the floor and doing his best to carry out Brown s wishes. That s so important, Brown said. When other guys see him doing it, when they see him buying in, it sends a message. Brown s message, meanwhile, is crystal clear, even to an All-Star like Irving: If you want to play, you had better play D. We have enough talent to score baskets, Irving said. We just have to get stops. That s something the Cavs didn t do often enough under former coach Byron Scott, who talked a fantastic game but didn t coach a very good one, especially on the defensive end. Scott might have had a plan and philosophy, but it wasn t readily apparent. One night Cavs guards went under screens, the next night they went over. One night the big men popped out to help, the next they retreated to protect the basket. Add in that guards Irving and Dion Waiters sometimes looked like bullfighters waving a cape as their man drove past them plus the fact Cleveland s scatterbrained rotations often left the opponent s best shooters wide open and the Cavs were the worst defensive team in the league last season. That will change. Actually, it s already changed. David Richard/CT Ask Brown about defense and his answers go on and on, the excitement in his voice building as he talks about concepts like showing, tagging and having five guys on a string. His practice sessions can be even longer. Early in the preseason, media members were kept waiting for four hours as Brown held a practice, stopped it for lengthy explanations and then held an even longer film session. I loved every minute of it, Irving said. Every six hours of it. It s more of a mental push, a mental barrier you have to get through. He s our coach and we re the players. Brown s concepts aren t See CAVS on page 24 22

26 CAVS from page 22 revolutionary, but they are strict, consistent and well thought out. They ve also been successful. Guards always fight over the top of screens. Big men show to slow down the opposing guard or make him take a little wider route, which gives Cleveland s perimeter defenders time to recover. Cavs big men then hustle back to their man, knowing a third defender has opened up and will be there to help, if needed. There is tons more, but all the principles and theories come back to one of the most basic themes in basketball: Stop your man. If you can do that, a lot of double-teams and weak-side help won t be needed. The defense won t always be scrambling, trying to recover. I like to teach, Brown said. In my opinion, these guys seem eager and willing to learn. Everybody, I believe, wants to win, he added. In this league, I believe you have to defend to win. The 43-year-old Brown knows a thing or two about winning. He led the Cavs to a regular-season record in his five-year stint from , including 66- and 61-win seasons in his final two years, and his.663 winning percentage is the best in franchise history. Brown s teams have also won at least one playoff series in every full season he has coached he spent a full season in charge of the Los Angeles Lakers in and was fired early in making him the only coach in NBA history with a minimum of five years experience to hold that distinction. But even more impressive than his lifetime record (.652) in the regular season, the man who led the Cavs to the 2007 NBA Finals seems much more comfortable, confident and open as he begins his second stint in Cleveland. Beyond that, Brown is secure enough to know his strengths and weakness. He s not the greatest offensive mind in the world, but he s smart enough to trust his assistants and his players. Brown will give his troops freedom and even tolerate a few mistakes at the offensive end as long as his guys are busting their backsides at the defensive end. Plus, he s got Irving, who is so talented with the ball in his hands he often makes something out of nothing. Our movement on offense is such that I m picking and choosing my spots, Irving said. We have enough talent to score points. Right now, our focus is on the defensive end and getting stops and me holding my man to a limited amount of points. The offense will take care of itself. Irving almost singlehandedly won the Cavs a handful of games over his first two seasons, but there were nights when he scored 30 points and also gave up that many, though they were often divided between the opposing team s starting point guard and backup. This season, Irving s scoring average will likely be close to the 22.5 points he put up a year ago, but with a healthy Varejao, an improved Waiters and the addition of Andrew Bynum and Jarrett Jack, his assist average should jump considerably from the 5.9 he averaged in I have a goal of averaging in the seven to nine range, he said. I have a lot of confidence in my teammates that we can get easy buckets and guys can make plays for me. We ve got talent on this team. My assists should go up enough. I m pretty sure I ll take care of that department. Irving s bigger goal, as he bluntly stated on media day this year and has repeated on several occasions, is to be the best player in the NBA. In the offseason, the 6- foot-3, 191-pounder came to the conclusion that in order for his name to even be mentioned among the best, he had to lead the Cavs to a much better record than the and marks they had in his first two years in the league. After the season, I reminded myself that with (wanting to be the best) comes a lot of responsibility on myself, Irving said. I can t do it without my teammates. The most important thing is we have to win games and make the playoffs. When I said that comment, I meant it, he added. But I can t do it without my teammates. In the end, Brown s defensive emphasis and desire to win are totally intertwined with Irving s quest to be the best and also to win. The Cavs can t win consistently without playing defense, while Irving can t be the best without consistent winning. We definitely have the pieces this year, whether young or old or young, old veterans, Irving said. We have a chance to do something special, he added. Our youth is going to keep us going. Soon after, Irving said something that had to be music to Brown s defensiveminded ears. This year, we have the talent to outscore teams, he said. But we have a defensive-minded coach and our focus is on that end of the floor. If we want to achieve our goals, our focus has to be on that end of the floor. David Richard/CT 24
