4 EERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY -88 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OUTLOOK Eastern Illinois University head coach Barbara Hilke begins her ninth season with nine players returning from last year's ateway Conference Tournament runner-up s quad. "I'm optimistic because I know our players have worked extreme l y hard to improve their skills, so that when we come back together as a team I really believe we're going to be a force to be reckoned with," said Hilke, who has a record at EIU and eight straight winning campaigns. "Our players are extremely self-motivated." The Lady Panthers were overall last season and third in the c onference with an 11-7 mark, their highest league finish since becoming a member six years ago. our starters are back in junior forward LISA TYLER (AURORA, IN-SOUTH DEARBORN), sophomore point guard BARB PERKES (TRENTON, IL-BREESE MATER DEI), sophomore center LAURA MULL (ANNA,!L-ANNA JONESBORO) and senior f orward ANN BROWN (EVANSTON, IL-EVANSTON). Tyler, among the conference's most versatile players, ranked fifth in the league in free- throw percentage at.775, sixth in assists at 3.3 per game and eighth in rebounding at 7.5. Tyler was second in team scori ng with 12.9 points per game and scored in double figures 20 times. Perkes, one of the ateway's most exciting performers, led the conference in three-point field goals made with 33 and was eighth in assists with 3.2 per contest while averaging 11.8 points. She was an a ll-tournament selection at the Northwestern Invitational and the Missouri Invitational. Mull, the only player on the team to start all 30 games, was an i ntimidating force in the middle as she ranked third in the conference with 1.5 blocks per contest while averaging 7.5 points and 6.1 rebounds. Brown, a tenacious defender, was named co-captain for the new campaign a fter being third among the Lady Panthers last year with 4.9 rebounds a game and averaging 4.5 points. The Lady Panthers must replace guard Pat Hamilton, who was the lone senior on the squad last season. Hamilton, a second-team all-conference selection, averaged a team- high 14.0 points per game and tied for second in the ateway with 2.3 steals an outing. Eastern will welcome the return of five players whose contributions were major reasons for last season's success. The group includes iunior guards SHERYL BONSETT (SCOTTSBUR, IN-SCOTTSBUR), SHELLY ETHRIDE (NEW BADEN, IL-BREESE MATER DEI) and LIZ CAVANAH (SPRINIELD, IL-SACRED HEART), j unior center BRENDA WEBB (BEAVERCREEK, OH-ANTIOCH, IL) anrl senior forward KERRY WALSH (DES PLAINES, IL-MARILLAC). Bonsett represented Eastern as an alternate for the North region a t t he United States Olympic Sports estival last summer. Elected as a co-captain for the upcoming season, the talented play-maker averaged 6.1 points and 2.9 assists a year ago. Webb was one of the league ' s top f i e ld-goal shooters at.515 from the floor while scoring 6.8 points a game. our freshmen with outstanding prep credentials will also compete for playing time. BEVERLY WILLIAMS, 5-11 freshman forward, averaged points and 9. 6 rebounds as a senior en route to being named second-team All- Ohio... was Dayton ' s area player of the year after the season and an All- Southwestern Ohio choice twice.. played in the McDonald ' s All- Star ame and All- Metro All-Star ame after her senior year. CATHY WILLIAMS, 5-10 freshman forward, was a rebounding machine, averaging boards and 12.0 points as a senior teammate of Beverly Williams... helped lead Jefferson High to a Class A Ohio sectional championship... versatile athlete played four years of basketball, softball and volleyball and also ran two years of track.
