Box 295 College Park, Maryland TEL FAX Contact: Dave Haglund or Greg Creese Football Notes October 30, 2000 Maryland Faces Wolfpack on ABC COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team returns to Byrd Stadium this week for a nationally televised game versus the NC State Wolfpack. The Terrapins are coming off of a 20-9 victory at Duke and will be seeking a third-straight ACC victory. The Terrapins take on the Wolfpack with a 4-4 record (2-3, ACC), while NC State is playing its best ball in years (5-2, 2-2 ACC) under first year head coach Chuck Amato despite a rough loss at home last week to Amato s previous employer, Florida State. A win by the Terps will put them fifth in the conference standings and ahead of the Wolfpack, a feat that seemed unlikely just a couple of weeks ago. The game will be televised by ABC Sports and will be broadcast locally by WTEM (980 AM) and WBAL (1090 AM). Maryland continued its winning ways last weekend in the same fashion that it had gotten back on track versus Wake Forest - with defense. After holding the Demon Deacons to seven points a week earlier, the Terps held Duke to nine points while sacking Blue Devil quarterbacks a season-high nine times. After a slow start by the Maryland offense, senior LaMont Jordan broke loose for a 77-yard TD run (the second-longest of his career) to get the Terrapins started. Jordan finished the game with 158 yards on just 21 carries and scored two TDs. The 158-yard performance marked the 16th time in his career that he has surpassed the century mark, second most in Maryland history. The Jordan Watch LaMont Jordan, a unanimous preseason first team All-American in preview magazines nationwide, rushed for a school-record 1,632 yards as a junior and against West Virginia this season officially became the leading rusher in school history. He trails only TCU s Ladainian Tomlinson among active NCAA career rushing leaders. LaMONT JORDAN NEEDS Although he will not likely gain the 679 yards needed to become the Atlantic Coast Conference s all-time rushing leader, Jordan can still make headway in the conference s record books. Currently seventh, Jordan can feasably get as high as second as he needs 472 to surpass UNC s Amos Lawrence ( 77-80) in the two slot. Terp Coach Ron Vanderlinden Terrapin head coach Ron Vanderlinden (Albion College 78) is in his fourth season at Maryland, guiding the re-shaping efforts from a run-and-shoot offense to a power run game and more balanced, physical attack. After helping rebuild struggling programs at Colorado ( ) and Northwestern ( ), Vanderlinden is as a college head coach. He was named the Terps field boss in December of Vanderlinden, 44, arrived in College Park after a five-year stint as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator under Gary Barnett at Northwestern where the Wildcats won a pair of Big Ten championships and made a 1996 Rose Bowl appearance. As defensive line coach in nine seasons under Bill McCartney at CU, the Buffaloes won 29 rushing attempts to break Charlie Wysocki s Maryland career mark. 40 yards to surpass Florida State s Warrick Dunn and move into sixth on the all-time ACC rushing list. 79 rushing yards to move past Virginia s Thomas Jones and into fourth on the all-time ACC list. 80 yards to reach the 4,000-yard plateau for his career. 114 yards to move into the NCAA s top 50 for career rushing yards (Stanford s Darrin Nelson is currently 50th with 4,033). 200 yards to match Charlie Wysocki with a Maryland record third 200-yard rushing game. 394 yards to reach the 5,000-yard plateau for all-purpose yards in his career. Counting two years at Michigan, Vanderlinden has coaching experience in 10 major bowl games. Vanderlinden s teams at Maryland have been characterized by vast improvements made to the rushing game and the overall defense. In 1998, Maryland was the sixth-most improved rushing team in America, and among the top 15 most improved teams in the country in total, scoring and pass defense. Last season, the Terps completed a worst-to-first ascent among ACC rushing leaders, climbing to a league-best yards per game after ranking ninth in NC State Coach Chuck Amato Chuck Amato (NC State, 69) is in his first season as head coach of the NC State football program. He came back to his alma mater two days after standing on the sideline for Florida State s national championship win in the Sugar Bowl and after spending 18 years with the Seminole program. For the last 14 of Amato s 18 years at FSU, he served as the team s assistant head coach. He was the defensive line coach for the first 14 years of his tenure and then the linebackers coach for his last four. His only coaching experience not at NC State or Florida State came in when he served as a linebackers coach at Arizona. A part of 11 ACC championships (one as a player in 65 at NCSU; two as an assistant in 73 and 79) and eight-straight as an assistant at FSU, Amato is a 1969 graduate of NC State where he was a three-year letterwinner in football and wrestling. Next Games The Terrapins hit the road again next week as they will head off to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face NC State s in-state rival, North Carolina. NC State will next face Duke in Raleigh as part of its 2000 homecoming celebration. Gameday at Byrd / Promotions For the NC State game, the University of Maryland campus community hosts Family Weekend with the Terps football game scheduled as its centerpiece. Byrd Turns 50! Byrd Stadium celebrates its 50th birthday as home of the Maryland Terrapins in Constructed in 1950 at a cost of $1 million, Byrd Stadium first opened on Sept. 30, 1950 when Maryland defeated in-state rival Navy in the dedication game before a school-record crowd of 43,386 fans. Byrd has since undergone a series of major facelifts, three of which occurred in the 1990s and resulted in its present form. Situated at the foot of the campus North Hill, the stadium is named for Dr. H.C. Curley Byrd, a multi-sport athlete as an undergraduate who later became head football coach and eventually served as university president. Beginning its 51st season, Maryland has posted an all-time record of (.609) in games at Byrd Stadium. 3 2000 / Game 8 vs. Duke Maryland 20, Duke 9 DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - LaMont Jordan s 77-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second half sparked Maryland to a 20-9 victory over winless Duke in Durham. Jordan, held to 12 yards on 11 carries in the first half, added a 28-yard touchdown with 3:11 left to play and finished with 158 yards on 21 carries. It was Jordan s 16th career 100-yard game for Maryland (4-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). Duke (0-8, 0-5) was within 10-9 with 8:22 to play after a 20-yard touchdown pass on a flea-flicker from wide receiver Ben Erdeljac to quarterback D. Bryant. Tailback Chris Douglas took a handoff from Bryant, and pitched the ball to Erdeljac, who stepped back and heaved it across the field to a wide-open Bryant. Duke s point-after attempt, however, sailed wide left and Maryland s defense kept the Blue Devils pinned inside their territory the rest of the game. The Terrapin D played well all game and notched a season-high nine sacks against the Blue Devils. Duke scored the first half s only points on a 42-yard field goal by Brent Garber with 12:30 left in the second quarter. Maryland finished with 354 yards in total offense after managing just 23 yards rushing and 77 passing in the first half. Maryland s Calvin McCall completed 9-of-17 passes for 118 yards with two interceptions. Shaun Hill entered in the second half to go 3-for-6 for 64 yards and one interception. Brian Kopka kicked two second-half field goals, including a career-long 49-yarder midway through the third quarter. Barnette s second TD pass gave the Wolfpack (6-4, 3-4 ACC) a lead with 11 seconds left in the first half. Barnette was flushed out of the pocket before throwing to the end zone to a wide-open Andy Vanderveer. NC State increased its lead to with 2:33 to go in the third quarter after Passingham kicked field goals of 26 and 31 yards on consecutive possessions. Maryland (5-4, 2-4), on the verge of its first winning season since 1995, cut the lead to on LaMont Jordan s 1-yard touchdown run with 12:12 left in the game. Jordan, Maryland s top rusher with an average yards per game, was held to 75. After swapping the lead twice early, the Wolfpack went ahead on Ray Robinson s 1-yard touchdown run with 3:18 to go in the second quarter. Maryland led 7-0 when NC State s Rahshon Spikes fumbled on the first play of the game and Tony Okanlawon carried the loose ball 21 yards for a touchdown. Barnette got NC State into the game by capping a 12- play, 80-yard drive with a 23-yard scoring pass to Chris Coleman. After Passingham s 27-yard field goal with 13:53 left in the second quarter, the Terrapins moved inside the NC State 20, but settled for Brian Kopka s 31-yard field goal to tie the score at with 9:12 to go in the half. 4 TERPS BY THE NUMBERS 0 for 0 Penalties and penalty yards in the second half for the Terps in their win last Saturday at Duke. Maryland was penalized seven times for 59 yards in the first half vs. the Blue Devils. 3 Defensive touchdowns this season by the Terps: a 55-yard fumble return vs.west Virginia by Leon Joe; a 69-yard interception return vs. Virginia by Shawn Forte; and a 90-yard interception return by Randall Jones vs. Wake Forest. 3rd National ranking for sophomore punter Brooks Barnard, who is on a school-record pace for single-season average (45.3). 3rd Maryland s first six opponents combined for a winning rate of 73% through Oct. 14, the thirdhighest winning percentage in the country in that time span. 8 Career interceptions for senior free safety Shawn Forte. He has three picks this year one he returned 69 yards for a touchdown and two others which came in the fourth quarter of games in which the Terps were protecting slim leads in eventual victories. 9 Number of punts of at least 50 yards for punter Brooks Barnard this season. 12 Number of sacks yielded in eight games by the Terps, an average of 1.5 per game. TERPNOTES FOOTBALL Maryland vs. NC State / November 4, 2000 Terps Seek Three In A Row After winning consecutive ACC games for the first time in four years, Maryland seeks to keep the streak alive this week against NC State. With a win, the Terps will have strung together three straight in conference for the first time since 1986, another sign that Ron Vanderlinden s program is headed in the right direction. The Terrapins are currently 2-3 in the ACC while NC State is 2-2 and boasts one of the top passing offenses in the league. Co-Captains Two seniors and a junior were tabbed during preseason as the Terps co-captains for the 2000 season. As selected in vote by their teammates, Maryland s 2000 team captains are senior fullback Matt Kalapinski (Marshfield, Mass.), senior safety Shawn Forte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and junior linebacker Aaron Thompson (Baltimore, Md.). On Jordan LaMont Jordan enters week No. 9 of his senior season as the NCAA s second active rushing leader, posting a four-year career total of 3,924 yards. He is currently 679 yards from becoming the leading rusher in Atlantic Coast Conference history. Jordan gave his numbers and the Terrapins a boost last week as he ran for a season-high 158 yards against Duke. He had touchdown runs of 77 (second-longest of his career) and 28 yards and now sits just 76 yards from breaking the 4,000-yard plateau for his career. Jordan is Maryland s all-time rushing leader and currently seventh among career ACC rushers. His 1,632 yards in 1999 rank as the thirdbest rushing season in ACC history. Updated LaMont Jordan notes are available later in this release. Barnard 3rd In NCAA Rankings Sophomore punter Brooks Barnard (Arnold, Md.) dropped to third this week in the NCAA Division I-A ranks in punting. Barnard, who began the season with a school-record performance (53.8 yards on six attempts) vs. Temple, and continued to lead the nation after the WVU game, has an average of 45.3 yards per punt but sits just under a yard behind the nation s leader, Preston Gruening of Minnesota (46.1). In the past four games, Barnard has returned to his early-season form as he has averaged 47.7 yards per punt, with longs of 67 and 71 yards. This season, Barnard has had punts of 85 (a career long and three short of the UM record), 71, 67, 66 and 61 yards. All told, he has had a total of nine punts that were 50 yards or more. Barnard, who walked on to the team in 1999, posted Maryland s best punting average (42.1 yards) since 1993 as just a freshman. Read more about Barnard and his bid for the inaugural Ray Guy Award later in this release. O-Line Trio for the Future Maryland returned three starters from its offensive line which led the ACC in fewest sacks allowed in Returning are a trio of youngsters who have already combined for five seasons worth of starting experience: junior center Melvin Fowler (Wheatly Heights, N.Y.), sophomore left guard Todd Wike (Lebanon, Pa.) and sophomore right tackle Matt Crawford (Moravia, N.Y.). Wike and Crawford combined to register 21 starts between them during their redshirt freshman seasons in 1999, with Crawford earning second team Freshman All-America honors by The Sporting News. Meanwhile, Fowler has started every game (30) of his collegiate career, and all three should remain together for this year and next. 30 Number of consecutive starts for junior center Melvin Fowler and junior outside linebacker Aaron Thompson. Both have started every game of their three-year careers. 36 Career touchdowns for LaMont Jordan, No. 2 on Maryland s all-time list. 49 Brian Kopka connected on a 49-yard field goal last Saturday vs. Duke, the longest of his career and the longest by a Terp since October 1991 (Dan DeArmas, 50 yards, vs. Duke). 405 Rushing yards by the Terrapins in the last two games. Homeboys Establishing the Maryland-D.C.-Northern Virginia area as the primary recruiting base for the development of the Terrapin program has been an overriding goal for Ron Vanderlinden since he assumed the head job prior to the 1997 season. In his first season, with the benefit of only one of his own recruiting classes, 23 players on the Terrapin roster hailed from either Maryland, D.C. or Northern Virginia, with six of those serving as opening-game starters. Since that time, however, numbers in both categories have doubled 46 players from the region are on the 2000 roster, with 12 of those serving as starters in the season opener vs. Temple. Md./D.C./N.Va Players on Roster Opening-Game Starters Pass Protection Impressive Despite losing a pair of starters on the offensive line and a two-year starter at tight end, Maryland s offensive line has allowed just 12 sacks (and only 11 have been of a QB) in eight games this season. That comes to a total of one sack for every 23 passing attempts. It continues an impressive trend begun three seasons ago. In Vanderlinden s first season (1997), the Terps yielded a whopping 56 sacks as the offensive line was being converted from a run-andshoot blocking unit to one of a more conventional offensive scheme. In 1998, that figure was nearly cut in half, with Maryland allowing 30 sacks in 11 games. Last season, sacks were dramatically reduced again, with Terp QBs caught behind the line of scrimmage just 11 times in 251 throwing situations. Prior to allowing a safety in the second quarter against Florida State, the Terps had run a string together of six-straight quarters without

5 allowing a sack and they have now given up just 12 for the season. Year Sacks Allowed Avg./Game Pass Att./Sack * *one sack was on TB LaMont Jordan as he tried to pass on an option play against Florida State. Jenkins Finishing Strong Senior defensive tackle Kris Jenkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) has spent much of his career trying to live up to the expectations set for him. In this, his final season as a Terp, he is going above and beyond. Prior to 2000, Jenkins had single-season bests of 39 tackles, four TFLs and one sack. In fact, his career totals were 92 tackles, seven TFLs and one-and-a-half sacks. Through eight games this season, Jenkins has destroyed his previous season bests and is putting up numbers that look more like his career numbers as he leads all defensive linemen with 52 tackles and leads the team with 14 TFLs and seven sacks. Against Duke, Jenkins had 12 tackles (nine unassisted), four for loss and two sacks. All three totals were single-game career highs. At 6-5, 292 pounds, it was a given that Jenkins would be a force against the run. His ability to get in the opponents backfield is what makes him a bonafide ACC candidate this year, however. With seven sacks, he is not only amongst the league leaders for defensive linemen, but he is also pushing to get his name in the Maryland record books. Jenkins needs just one sack to move into a tie with Ernie Salley for 10th on the single season list as Salley notched eight in With three more sacks, Jenkins can stake claim as one of the Terrapins best pass rushers in recent history as no one has had 10 sacks since Jack Bradford in If he can best Bradford, he will end up with more sacks than any Terp in the last 15 years. Stacked at LB Maryland s linebacking crew, ranked No. 8 nationally by one preseason publication, is well represented at the top of the Terps defensive stat sheet. Junior Marlon Moye-Moore (Brandywine, Md.) leads the team in tackles with 80 and has been in double digits in each of the last five games. Third-year starter Aaron Thompson (Baltimore, Md.) has notched 53 to go with eight TFLs and 5.5 sacks, while rush linebacker Mike Whaley (Lexington, S.C.) is fifth on the tackles chart with 54 and has shown to be one of the team s top playmakers despite only being eight games into his collegiate career. Sophomore E.J. Henderson (Aberdeen, Md.), who got his first taste of a starting role late last season because of an injury to Kevin Bishop (St. Petersburg, Fla.), is third in tackles (68) and was the team leader for the first half of 2000 (prior to an injury in the Clemson game that had him miss a game-and-a-half). The Dynamic Duo The Terrapins have been getting outstanding play of late from safeties Tony Jackson (Ellicott City) and Shawn Forte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Jackson led the team in tackles against Duke, notching 16 (nine unassisted) and tying a career high he set just two weeks previous. He also gathered in his third career interception and forced a fumble against the Blue Devils. The Duke game marked the fourth-straight game that Jackson was in double figures in tackles. With 63 in his last four games, Jackson leads the team during that span and has moved into a tie for first on the squad for the season with 80. Against Duke, Forte picked off his third pass of the season and eighth of his career. He now stands tied for 17th on the UM career charts for interceptions and can move into the top 10 with two more. With seven tackles and a pass breakup against Duke, Forte has made 20 stops in his last two games and now leads the team for the season in pass breakups (5) as well as interceptions (3). Getting Defensive In the past two games, Maryland has gotten a boost from its defense. Most recently, the Terps held Duke to nine points and sacked the Blue Devils nine times, the most in a single game in over a decade for UM. The following is a comparison of the Terrapins defensive efforts for the first six games versus the last two: 1st 6 Last 2 Points Allowed (Avg.) Opp. Rushing (Avg.) Opp. Total Yds. (Avg.) Turnovers Forced (Total) 13 7 Interceptions (Total) 6 5 Sacks (Total) New Name, Same Result Marlon Moye-Moore has made a change to his name (prior to this season he went by Marlon Moore), but not to his address: he still can be found at or near the top of the Maryland tackle charts. Moye-Moore, No. 2 in the ACC in tackles last year, is averaging 10 stops through eight games this year and is second on the Terrapin defense with 55 tackles in the last five games. Actually, the Moye family name is not new it s just not been used publicly by Marlon. Moore s mother, Marie Moore, did not marry his father, Basil Moye, until he was 10 years old. His birth certificate and driver s license both reflect his name as Marlon Moye-Moore though he had been known by only his mother s surname during childhood because his parents were not married. 6 Moore Tackles Moye-Moore paced all Terrapin tacklers with 130 stops last season, just seven shy of the school s class record for tackles by a sophomore (Ratcliff Thomas, 137 in 1994). He has picked up right where he left off last season, leading the team (along with safety Tony Jackson) with 80 stops after eight games. He has reached double figures in tackles in 15 of his last 18 games, and has led the team in tackles seven times. Moye-Moore and Clemson s Keith Adams, both juniors, entered the 2000 season as the ACC s top returning tacklers. Thompson Breaks Out vs. Duke Junior Aaron Thompson was the backbone of a Terrapin linebacking corps stocked with freshmen and sophomores in A 30-game starter in his third season, Thompson was second to Moye-Moore with 10.1 tackles per game in 1999 seventh in the ACC. After a couple of games that would be considered quiet by Thompson s standards, the junior broke out against Duke, registering seven tackles, three TFLs and three sacks. The three sacks was a single-game high for Thompson for his career and the most by a Terp in any game this year. In his three-year career, Thompson has amassed near-record numbers in tackles for loss. He paced Maryland with nine TFLs as a freshman and 17 in 1999 as a sophomore and has added eight tackles for loss through eight games this season. His 17 TFLs last season were the best at Maryland since Charles Johnson posted 18 in His efforts include a career-high 15 stops in the 1999 opener vs. Temple and double-figure efforts in eight of 11 games in Overall, he has registered double-digit tackles in 10 of his last 18 games. Thompson has started every game of his major college career (30), and is averaging 7.7 stops per game (231 total). Gary Terps Go-To Receiver Junior WR Guilian Gary (Horseheads, N.Y.) has quickly become one of Maryland s top playmakers on offense and one of the top receivers in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Gary had just three receptions for 22 yards against Duke, but for the season he leads the team with 31 catches for 447 yards. Through eight games, Gary is tied for eighth in the ACC in receptions per game (3.8) and receiving yards per game with Gary s two touchdowns against Middle Tennessee in week three marked the first time a Terrapin wideout had two TD receptions since Omar Cheeseboro accomplished the feat versus NC State in After a near record-setting season returning punts in 1999, Gary is quietly making his way up the career charts for punt returns. His 312 yards a year ago were the fourth-highest figure in Terrapin history and his 35 returns matched the second-highest total. Currently, Gary is within reach of Terp career records for both yards and returns. CAREER PUNT RETURN YARDS Yards 1. In this his senior year, Kopka has made a charge up the Maryland record books in several categories. The Duke game may have been Kopka s finest of this year as both of his kicks were crucial to the Terps padding their lead over the Blue Devils. His career-long 49-yarder in the third quarter put the Terps up by a touchdown, while his 30-yarder in the fourth put UM up four points, making it impossible for Duke to take the lead with a field goal of its own. Kopka s nine points against Duke moved him ahead of Steve Mike-Mayer ( ) and into third on the Maryland charts with 209 points kicking for his career. With his 43-yarder against Virginia earlier this season, Kopka moved ahead of Mike-Mayer and into the No. 3 position on the all-time Maryland field goal chart. In the season opener, Kopka s 41-yard field goal helped clinch the Maryland victory over Temple. Kopka booted 16 field goals in 1999 to record the second-highest figure in Maryland history. With at least one field goal in all 11 games, he was the sixth Terrapin placekicker to register 16 or more in a single season. Kopka is 41 for 58 (.707) for his career. Kopka is 16-of-18 lifetime from less than 30 yards. He is 10-of-20 lifetime from 40 yards or more. Kopka has had four three-fg games and nine games with multiple FGs in his career. With his pair of touchdowns against Duke, Jordan continued his assault on the charts while Kopka surpassed Steve Mike-Mayer with his nine critical points in the Duke game. Jordan s 77-yard touchdown romp on the second play of the second half was the secondlongest run of his career and helped spark the Terrapins, giving them a 7-3 lead. He added a 28- yard score to seal the win with 3:11 remaining. Held to just 12 yards in the first half, the Maryland senior exploded for 146 yards on only 10 carries in the second half to record the 16th 100- yard game of his career. Jordan, who also had a 32-yard pass reception, moved to No. 7 on the ACC s career rushing chart, just 30 yards from passing former Florida State star Warrick Dunn in the No. 6 position, and just 80 yards from becoming the fourth player in league history to reach the 4,000-yard plateau. He is just 39 carries from replacing former Terp Charlie Wysocki as the Maryland career leader in all-time carries. Unanimous Selection Heading into a senior campaign in which he could become the leading rusher in Atlantic Coast Conference history and challenge the top 10 college running backs of all-time, Maryland tailback LaMont Jordan was named a preseason first team All-American by nine major publications released this past summer.
